Margo had trained quite a few students over the years. The most famous of them being Astro and Breeze. There were a handful of others who had gained pretty notable status too, and because of that, others came by seeking out her teachings as well. She didn't mind teaching those who wanted to get stronger, or those who showed potential.
But as her husband Tom had brought up, teaching anyone who came by and just asked could be… dangerous, for a number of reasons. So she began charging for her lessons, which greatly cut down those seeking her out. Of course there were still those she came across that caught her eyes and she took in for free.
Visas had been more than a little reckless, but had shown a lot of spirit, which she knew would make her into a fine warrior. Wyot may not have been the most skilled, but there was just something about him that made her want to see how far he could go. He was like her own little passion project.
But, she could honestly say, there hadn't been anyone like this young man to come seeking her out before. "So, you said your name was Scab, didn't you?" she asked.
She saw on the throne, Isaac sitting on her lap and Tom sitting on his own throne beside her. Her husband very much looked on guard, and she couldn't blame him considering that the boy had just burst in the way he did. He'd snuck past most of the guards before taking out the ones posted at the throne room and barging in.
"Scab Brimstone," he repeated.
Brimstone, she knew that name. It was the name of the previous Demon Blade. "You have a lot of nerves just bursting in here," Tom said, clearly annoyed. It seemed like the only thing that had kept him from attacking was the fact that the intruder was a kid. But she knew it wouldn't take much to provoke him given that she and Isaac were here. "Do you have any idea what-?"
"I didn't come to talk to you. I'm only interested in Margo," Scab said, pointing his sword towards her. "I'm the son of Scar Brimstone, the man you stripped the title of the Demon Blade from," he said glaring at her.
Tom looked annoyed, while Margo hummed. "Scar huh? I remember him. He was skilled. Really skilled." He had been famous for his duel wielding style, and had been one of the toughest challenges she'd ever had. She lost track of him after that though. The last she had heard, he'd hung up the blade and retired.
It was a shame really. Even if he hadn't wanted the title back, he still could have passed on what he knew to others. His style had been considered one of the strongest at that point, and she knew there had to be plenty of people who would have wanted to learn it for themselves. "So he had a son. It's nice to meet you. Don't suppose you came to challenge me, have you?' she asked.
There were plenty of students and children who came to avenge their masters or parents defeat. Most of them didn't make it past the gate though. Scab sheathed his sword, an annoyed look on his face. "I came… I came to…" He balled his fist up, looking frustrated. Margo looked at him curiously as he suddenly knelt down. "I came to ask you to teach me."
Tom looked at the boy wide eyed, while Isaac looked confused. Margo raised an eyebrow. "Really? That's a little surprising to hear. I would have sworn you would have wanted to take a shot at me," she said amused.
He glared at her again. "Oh, I do," he said sternly. "My father may have given up on trying to reclaim the title of Demon Blade back for our family, but I haven't. I've done nothing but train so I could take you down and prove our family's style is the greatest style of all."
He then gripped his sword tightly as he looked down. "But… after fighting your student, and seeing just how far the gap was between us, I know I'm still not even close. I need to get stronger, and I can't do that on my own. My father won't teach me anymore, and… the only person I know who could best him was you."
Her student huh? The only one she could think of was Astro. Which made things start to make sense. If he'd thought Astro was a good test to see if he was ready to fight her, he had things backwards. While was pretty sure she had him in pure technique, Astro's overall skill had passed hers a while ago.
But, the fact that he came here after losing to him and didn't just give up sort of impressed her. There were plenty of people, his father included, who lost their resolve whenever they saw just how far they were behind those considered to be the best. If he took on Astro and still wanted to keep going, well, the kid had heart.
"So, just to clarify. The reason your here is…?"
"For you to teach me."
"And your overall endgame is?"
He narrowed his eyes at her. "To beat you…"
For a long moment there was just silence, and Tom got ready to tell the kid just how crazy he was. But then suddenly Margo laughed. "Wow, that's… something. I mean you want to beat me, and you expect me to help you with that?" she asked amused. "You really are something to come here and make that request, you know that?"
Scab just kept staring at her. He knew the chances were slim that she would accept him, especially given that he was planning on bringing her down. But he could only get so strong on his own. And he wasn't going to lie to her about his intentions either. That just wasn't how he did things.
"Well, will you accept me as your student?" he asked.
Margo leaned back in her chair and sighed. "I'm pretty busy with all of the duties I have now, and you're a bit more advanced than my other students, so I know I'd have to put extra time aside for you," she explained. "On the other hand… you're much too interesting a person to just let go. I want to see if you really can surpass me."
Scab looked at her surprised. "Wait, you're saying…?"
"On one condition." Margo stood up, rubbing noses with Isaac who giggled. "You see, my daughter and her friend Amber are split between their duties for their friends on Earth and the Septarian kingdom. And my other babysitter is busy with her guide. I need someone to look after him when I'm busy, so…"
Scab stared at her with a confused expression, and then grew wide eyed. "Wait, me?!" he asked in disbelief. "You want me to be his babysitter?!"
Margo shrugged. "Babysitter, guardian, bodyguard, whatever you prefer. It won't be all the time. Just whenever Tom and I are doing something urgent and need someone to keep an eye on him. If you're not able to handle him then we'll find something else."
Scab scoffed. "You're kidding me. I'm a warrior, not a babysitter."
"Well if you can't handle it, then that's fine. If you're not able to handle a baby, then it's probably best you don't do through with my training. It's a little too intense for you," Margo said casually. Tom looked at her and hummed, while Scab glared.
"I know what you're doing…" Scab muttered.
"I have no idea what you're talking about," Margo said innocently.
"...I'll watch the kid."
Tom sat back looking curious. So his wife had recruited both a new student and a babysitter? Maybe she was the one who should have been making business deals. "Great. I assume you don't want to keep traveling between here and your father's castle. We can clear a room for you here if you'd like," she said.
Scab grunted. His father's place was way too far to keep going back and forth one foot. He already knew his dad wouldn't like it, but if he wasn't going to teach him himself then he didn't really have a choice. "Sure."
"Alright then. I'm going to tell the servants to ready a room for you. In the meantime, why don't you come along with me and spend some time with Isaac," she said holding the infant out towards him.
Scab slowly reached out and grabbed the child, and Isaac laughed before reaching out and grabbing his horn, yanking on it. Scrab narrowed his eyes. "Uh…"
Tom walked up beside his wife. "Uh, babe… are you sure this is a good idea?" he asked. He knew she had an eye for students, but… well, this was the son of one of her old rivals. Trusting him to live in the castle and around Isaac made him a bit nervous.
Margo laughed. "It's fine, trust me. He's not going to be getting up to any trouble… well, not that kind of trouble anyway," she said confidently. "Besides, I think I've come across another special one. He's a bit rough around the edges, but I want to see how far he can go."
"If you say so…"
"Is this normal?"
They looked over and saw Isaac grabbing onto Scab's fangs. The boy looked more than a little annoyed, but Isaac laughed away as he shook the boy's head back and forth. "Yeah, that means he likes you," Margo said smiling.
Tom sighed. "Yeah, this is gonna be a thing…"
