"Access to such information has been explicitly forbidden."
"...what about her research then? What was she working on when-?"
"Access to such information has been explicitly forbidden."
Astro grit his teeth and narrowed his eyes towards the large golem known as F5. It had been about a week since it had activated after Hekapoo tried to break into Rosetta's study, and since then he had asked it about a million questions. Not of which had been really answered. He wasn't sure why, but everything about his mother and her research seemed taboo to this thing. All it told him was what he already knew.
"What information isn't explicitly forbidden?" Astro asked annoyed.
"I have a myriad of information available about the time before the tyranny of the Butterfly family, the former state of the four Nymph tribes, the purge of the Insectoid tribes, the-"
"Is there anything about Rosetta?"
"No."
Astro sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Who is the one who programmed you to restrict access to information on Rosetta Butterfly?" he asked, already knowing
"Rosetta Butterfly," F5 stated. "Additional statement. This was not a programmed command, but a request."
Astro raised an eyebrow. "A request?"
"Rosetta falls under the category of 'friend'. Requests made from her will take priority over any and all other allies listed."
Now the prince was a bit intrigued. He'd heard the story about how F5 had a conscience of its own. How Branch had severed his connection from the Air Nymph tribes control and allowed it to obtain it's own free will. But it had spoken so formally and robotically he'd assumed it was a mistake.
But now it was saying Rosetta was his friend… that was interesting. "I'm her son. If you're her friend, then don't you think it's reasonable to be able to tell me about my own mother?" he asked.
"Negative. I know not why Rosetta chose to restrict information to any and all who ask, but this request shall be carried out until ordered otherwise."
"She can't order otherwise! She's… she's gone," Astro said frowning.
"I am aware. I was informed of her end and given these instructions shortly before I was deactivated. But this request shall still be carried out regardless."
Astro grunted. As annoying as it was for him right now, he had to admire that F5 was willing to carry out a promise to someone who was long dead and gone. But then a thought occurred to him. "Wait, when were you deactivated?" he asked.
"Thirteen years, eleven months, 22 days, 4 hours and-"
Astro ignored the rest and began to think. Something was… very, very wrong here. That would have meant he'd been informed and deactivated long before The Commission tracked her down on Earth. Before she even went to Earth! "F5, let me be clear about this. She told you that she was going to die before going to Earth?"
"Access to such information has been explicitly forbidden."
"Motherfu-!" Astro stopped himself, and then glared. Something was odd here. And he was going to get answers, one way or another. "I'll be back…"
"What happened the day you killed her?"
The members of the Magical Commission looked down at the boy shocked. When he had called them there all for a sudden meeting, they expected… well, they didn't know what they expected. But they knew it would be trouble. For him to just start off with this however. It had totally caught them off guard.
"What?" Omni asked.
"I asked you what happened the day you killed my mother? How did it happen?" Astro asked, stepping towards them. "I want to know all the details."
Hekapoo looked hesitant. She knew how testy he got whenever the topic of his birth mother came up, and she would have liked to avoid it. But she knew denying him any answers would infuriate him just as much. "Astro, are you sure you want to talk about this?" she asked. "It's not… it's not something we like recalling."
"I don't imagine it is. But I don't care. I want answers, and I want them now."
Rhombulus frowned at him. "We showed up to get you, she fought us, and then… you know, bad stuff happened. That's all you need to know. Now are we done, because-"
Astro glared at him. "Rhombulus… be quiet. And stay quiet until I walk out of this room or I swear to the stump I will shatter that empty head of yours like glass…" The snake armed being flinched as the deadly look the prince was giving him. He looked… he looked so much like his father right now. It was terrifying.
Omni sighed, though was thankful that Rhombulus seemed to take the hint. It would be much easier to proceed if he kept his mouth shut. "Let's just calm down and-"
"When Rosetta fought back against you, how did she do it?" Astro asked.
Hekapoo scoffed. "What do you mean how? She had a scythe. I think that's pretty self explanatory," she said. What in the world was he getting that.
"That doesn't make any sense though," Astro muttered. All three of them looked at him confused. Just what was wrong with him today? "Where's the body?" Astro asked glaring up at the three.
Omni shook his head. "There was no body left behind. The spell she used to protect you from us drained her of her very essence, body and soul. Aside from her weapon, there wasn't a single trace of her left behind."
Astro shook his head. Her weapon? But… no, none of this made any type of sense. "So if I go down to your chambers, I'm not going to find a single secret passage or room where a body is being kept or crystallized in? Not even a trace?" he asked.
"I'm not sure what you're trying to accuse us of Asterossa, but we've told you nothing but the truth. You mother fought against us tooth and nail, and when she realized she couldn't win she resorted to using the spell that wards us away from you. There is hidden detail or anything more to the story than that," Omni assured.
The prince kept looking him in the eyes, and then looked towards Hekapoo. The redhead nodded. While her words still didn't mean much to him, it was just slightly more than the others. He glared towards Rhombulus, who flinched and looked fearful, but didn't show any signs of lying.
Astro grunted and then turned and began walking out. No, there were too many inconsistencies in the story. Too many holes.
If Rosetta knew what the Commission was going to come for her eventually, how hadn't she planned for it? She was smarter than anyone in mewni. There was no way she wouldn't have prepared for them, even if she hadn't known. And her losing to them just seemed… iffy.
And her weapon Black Bane had been the only thing left behind? If that was the case, who put it back in the cabin? He was the only one who could touch it. Not even Meteora or Eclipsa could. He certainly hadn't. He never even touched the thing. It was hanging in the same place it had for years.
"I know a place you may find answers…"
Astro's eyes widened, and he quickly looked up to see Sirius standing nearby. The captain of the third division looked as casual as ever. "Were you spying on me?" Astro asked, glaring at him. Oftentimes he would notice him shadowing him around the castle. He never knew why, and he never cared to ask. He wasn't a threat to him, and he had proven his loyalty to his family and the kingdom many times before.
"Yes," Sirius said bluntly.
The prince raised an eyebrow. "Okay then… why would you know where I could find answers about Rosetta. Do you know something I don't?"
"I know many things many people don't," Sirius said pointing to his head. "I read a lot of minds throughout the day. But I'm not allowed to talk about most of it, because that's supposed to be rude. But I can tell you something about Rosetta."
Astro stepped towards him. "And what might that be?"
"It's a place she always liked to visit. A special place. I can implant its location in you memory if you're like…"
Astro usually didn't like people in his head, but… he didn't really care for Sirius company if he was being honest. When they were around the others or Morel was there to keep him in check, that was one thing. But on his own he creeped him out a bit.
So he'd allowed Sirius to show him the location, and quickly made his way there. Sear moved alongside him, the dragon looking around as they made their way inside of the hidden temple. This was new territory for the both of them. They'd been around this place hundreds of times before, but they'd never notice this entrance around. It really was well hidden. How his mother came across it he had no idea.
Unlike the outside of the temple, which had been worn and covered in grass, moss, and vines, the inside looked well kept. And there was a strong powerful magic that hit him like a tidal wave when he entered. "What is this place…?" he muttered as he walked deeper. He and Sear eventually came across a fountain. Though not one with water.
It had some kind of… golden liquid. Wait, he had seen something like this before. Magic, in its purest form. A glob of it floated above the fountain, and he reached out to touch it, but suddenly it seemed to crsytalized becoming dense.
"Careful child. Though you seem in control of it, you are a weidler of dark magic. You could accidentally corrupt it."
Astro and Sear both turned around, and saw a tall willowy figure before them. They had long black hair that trailed behind as they approached, and white strands that they clipped behind their head. Their face was slender and owl-like, and they had a long and greek-shaped nose that almost looked like a beak.
They had 5 sets of orange eyes, one of them being in the center of their forehead. Each eye seemed to be crying with the golden liquid magic, and they wore a purple robe-esque gown with laguna yellow accents and a purple hood with a crystal at the center.
Astro had no idea who or what this creature was, but it's magic was stunning. It didn't quite rival Oberon or Umbriel, it was more like Cressida's. But that was still saying something. He reached for his sword, and Sear began to growl.
The figure raised their hands. "Calm yourself child. I don't mean any harm to anyone, least of all you," it said as it approached. Astro kept his guard up, but… he couldn't feel any type of aggression or ill intent coming from them. It was the opposite in fact. The magic coming off of them was warm, and welcoming. Pleasant.
"Dear, how many years has it been since I've last seen you? You're grown so much," it said stopping in front of him. Astro looked confused as they reached up and cupped his face. "You look so much like your mother. Especially your eyes."
Astro's eyes widened. "Wait, you knew Rosetta? How? Who are you?" he asked.
"I am known as Lusciniam, the guardian of magic. But your mother simply referred to me as Lus. You may as well if you chose."
Astro blinked. "Lusciniam… like, the 'Abductor of Children' Lusciniam? I thought you were just a story," he said. Parents told their children stories about this being. How if they misbehaved it would come in the dead of night and drag them away, never to be seen again.
"As did you mother. May I assume that you have come for similar reasons as she has? I'm sorry, but I cannot give away samples of magic so loosely. Not even for her child."
Astro held his hand up. "Wait, wait, hold on a second… How did you know my mother? How do you know me? My father never mentioned you."
Lus hummed. "That is not surprising. The relationship between you father and I is… complicated," they said shaking their head. "As for your mother, it was her natural curiosity that led her to this temple. And what led her to return and question me on my own existence. We became rather close over the years. She is someone I consider… considered, a very close friend. I was terribly saddened by her loss."
Astro noticed even more tears beginning to pour from her eyes, and the feeling of warmth warped into one of… sorrow. "I'm sorry. I wish I could say the same, but I didn't know her very well. She is the reason I'm here right now though… in this location, not just in general," he said.
Lus gave an amused chuckle as Sear walked over and began sniffing at them. They scratched his head, and the dragon let out a content purr. "I have a few questions about her. And I thought I may be able to find answers here," he explained.
"Well, your mother shared a great deal of her discoveries with me, though I can only say I understood half of it. Still I'm more than happy to share what I know with you. About both her research and her life."
Astro nodded, and then began explaining everything to them. Lus listened carefully, their expression changing only subtly throughout.
"You knew my mother closely, didn't you? Do you really think she wouldn't have been prepared for them to come? Do you really think she wouldn't have been able to handle them? The way everyone talks I just can't imagine she wouldn't have had some backup or escape plan," he said. "I just don't understand how they could have gotten the jump on her."
Lus hummed curiously. "If there's one thing I can say about your mother, it's that she was never caught unawares. She planned for every eventually, no matter how big or small. It does seem quite odd to me that knowing they would come for her, that she didn't take further action."
Lus had little love for the Commission, and they knew Rosetta hadn't either. She no doubt had precautions on how to deal with them as individuals and a whole. Yes, all of this did sound rather odd. "And you say a body was never found?" they asked
Astro nodded. "No. Apparently the protection spell she used on me burned up every part of her being. At least that's what Omni said."
Lus rubbed their chin. "That is… quite curious. But it might explain some things that have bothered me. I have a very strong connection with the dead, and am able to hear their voices. But I have not once ever heard the voice of your mother," they said looking down at him again. "And I do since a hint of her essence within you. I assumed it was simply her magic passed on to you, but if the spell truly did consume her very being and you were the intended target of it…"
Astro's eyes widened. "Are… are you saying that the last of her being was left on me somehow? How does that even work?" he asked. He had used protection spells on people close to him. Some with just slight hints of dark magic. But he never got any sense of his essence on them.
"I'm honestly not quite sure myself. Even if that was the case, one would think it would have worn off after all this time. But there were some areas of magic your mother delved into that were even beyond my knowledge. Particularly surrounding the dark arts," Lus said, they said before smiling. "Or, perhaps it's just the last traces of a mother's love clinging to their child."
Astro felt his cheeks light up slightly, and then looked down at his chest. He didn't know Rosetta. Unless he was looking at a picture, he couldn't even remember her face. But… the idea that there was still some part of her clinging to him. Protecting him… it was comforting for some reason.
He looked back up towards Lus. "Thank you…"
They nodded back. "You're quite welcome. I'm just happy to see that you're doing well," they said. "If there are any other questions about her, or just in general, please don't hesitate to ask."
The prince nodded. "I would like that… I honestly don't have much to do now. If you have the time, I'd love to hear any stories you'd enjoy sharing about her," he said.
Lus face lit up. "Oh, I would like that very much," they said happily. "Did you know that your mother had multiple research facilities across multiple dimensions? She learned a multitude of languages so that she could…"
"Do you think he's onto something…?"
Omni looked down towards Hekapoo who was frowning. "What exactly do you mean?" he asked curiously. "Are you worried about what Asterossa was going on about? The boy is just lashing out. Too much time with his father has clearly been affecting him."
Rhombulus huffed. "You ask me he got it from his mom. Or his grandma. They were both crazy conspiracy theorists. Always poking their noses where they shouldn't have been. He's just as bad as they were…"
Hekapoo rolled her eyes. He had never talked like this whenever Meissa or Rosetta were around, and it looked like it was going to be the same with Asterossa too. "Look, I'm just saying… it's weird. We were ready for the fight of our lives when we went after Rosetta, and it wasn't like she didn't put up a struggle, but…"
Omni hummed. "I can understand your point, but we caught her off guard."
"When have we ever caught Rosetta off guard?" Hekapoo asked. "I can't remember one time where we ever managed to get the drop on her. And then, the day we come to take her kid away, she just… is? That's strange."
"Ah, you're worrying about nothing! She was probably too busy doing mom stuff to keep an eye on us. Like you were," Rhombulus said crossing his arms. "Always changing diapers and dumb stuff like that when we had meeting. Smelled terrible."
Hekapoo narrowed her eyes. "Hey Rhombulus?"
"Yeah?"
"Shut up."
He looked like he was about to shout back at her, but Omni spoke up. "You… may have a point," he said, looking down in thought. "The circumstances are rather off. For her to just fight us directly rather than set some trap for us. Perhaps we should look into this."
"Or perhaps you shouldn't…"
The three of them all heard a familiar voice behind them, but before they could turn to see who it was, three small beams of light shot down and hit off them in the back. Their eyes widened and began glowing, and their faces suddenly turned blank.
Sirius stood on the ceiling behind the three, blowing on his finger as if it were a smoking gun. "Bullseye," he said before jumping down to the floor behind them. "Now, let's alter things around a bit. We wouldn't want you noticing any discrepancies…"
He began moving his fingers, and though from the outside it seemed as nothing was happening, he was moving around and altering the memories in their heads. Not enough to change anything big, but enough to erase any doubts about what had happened on that day.
He couldn't have them noticing anything funny before it was time. They had to remain oblivious, and play their parts until the time came.
Typhon, Astro, the Commission, the Queensguard.
They all had roles to play, and his job was to make sure everyone stayed on track and fulfilled them.
As per Rosetta's final instructions...
A/N: Rosetta still keeping secrets and organizing mischeif from beyond the grave! What exactly did the black sheep of the Butterfly family have up her sleeve? What is her connection to Sirius? It'll all be gone over when the Titanic Ten arc starts!
This chapter introduces one of the honorary mentions to the Tales Of Mewni contest, Lusciniam. They were one of my favorite characters and I had honestly wanted to pick them as a winner, but at the time I was being pretty picky about the rules of having someone who had lived at the time of the Titanic Ten's rule. So I made them an honorary mention. They'll have a small part in the arc as well, but I really wanted to do a fic with them.
F5 is a very robotic and stoic being, but he's not without his own will. His 'orders' are really just request or favors he takes from people he considers closed. And Sirius is getting up to some very sneaky stuff! Manipulating the memories of the Commission?! Just what is he thinking?! I'm not sure if I want to put how he and Rosetta met in the arc, or make it it's own one-shot... hmm?
