Two weeks passed by quickly and soon it was the weekend again and Natsu and Lucy were getting ready for dinner with Igneel at the house.
Igneel had eagerly agreed to it when Natsu called him the other day, offering to bring something. Natsu told him all he needed to bring was himself, but Igneel insisted he'd bring something good for dessert. He must still have his big sweet tooth after all.
Natsu had finished up his stretches and workout routine earlier. Lucy even joined him for a bit, making her laugh when he tried to offer a contest for who could do the most push ups. They did quite a bit together before she had enough and went back upstairs to freshen up.
Now, he started to get things cleaned up and ready for the grill on the back deck, he figured it was a nice warm day for it.
"Hey, you," Lucy greeted as she stepped out through the back screen door. "Did you need any help?"
Natsu drank in the sight of her in the soft blue flowing blouse and jeans she had changed into, dark material hugging her curves just right.
The simple domestic moments like this with her, like getting ready to BBQ out in their backyard, filled his chest with such fond affection, it was still almost hard to believe this was their life now. He felt so lucky.
"Hey, Luce," Natsu grinned, cleaning off his hands on the rag over his shoulder. "Nah, I think we're good. Just gotta get the food ready but I think I'll wait till Igneel gets here soon. I was thinkin' we could hang out back here then head in if it gets cold later?"
They'd strung up some strings of lights along the new back patio Natsu had finished fixing up recently. Along with a new table and chairs, and a small outdoor couch off to the side to spend more time out here now that it was starting to get warmer and they could fully enjoy it.
"Yeah, that sounds good," Lucy said, "It's pretty nice out today after all."
He couldn't argue with that. The warmth felt soothing on his skin, almost as much as Lucy's presence.
"Mmhm," he agreed, walking over closer to her. "I'm just gonna go get washed up, you just relax," Natsu leaned in to press a warm kiss to her cheek, leading them back inside.
Lucy chuckled. "No promises."
By the time he came back down to the kitchen he noticed Lucy did end up getting some of the food ready for him to take outside after all, making him smile. He knew she wouldn't be able to relax for too long when she knew they had things to do.
"Well, look at you all handsome," Lucy grinned when she turned and spotted him.
Natsu smiled brightly, running a hand through his hair. "It's nothin' much, but glad you approve," he chuckled. "You look pretty and comfy, so I figured I'd follow your lead."
He'd just thrown on some chino shorts, and a dark navy soft short sleeved button up shirt that Lucy had gotten him with some cute cats printed on the chest pocket.
Lucy giggled, stepping up to him. "Yes, so pretty, and it fits great." She leaned in to press a kiss to his jaw, lingering a bit. "Mm, even your good cologne? Must be a good day," Lucy grinned.
Natsu's smile shifted into a smirk, wrapping an arm around her waist. "Maybe it's mostly for you now."
Of course he knew how much she liked the scent on him on when he put it on some days and now he wore it for her delight more often than not.
"Then I'm honored." Lucy closed the distance between them, giving him a quick kiss.
Natsu smiled into it before they pulled back. "Ooh, what did you set up?" Natsu eyed over the couple of bowls of snacks on the island, grabbing a handful and tossing them into his mouth.
"Natsu," Lucy tried to reprimand, "you're gonna mess up your appetite." She shook her head with a laugh, brushing off the crumbs on his shirt and leaning against the counter.
"You should know there's no such thing, babe," Natsu grinned, wide and toothy.
"Yeah, that's true." He laughed fully at the roll of Lucy's eyes and playful shove to his shoulder.
In turn, Natsu pulled her into a tight hug, giving her a couple sloppy kisses across her face.
"Get o-off," Lucy breathed between giggles, pushing on his chest lightly.
Natsu pulled back and cackled as Lucy huffed, brushing back some of her hair. "Here." He leaned back in, giving her a slower kiss.
Lucy smiled into the kiss, sighing and melting against him a little. Her arms came up to wrap around his neck, sifting into the shorter hair at his nape.
"Better?" Natsu asked with a sly grin and a squeeze to her waist.
Lucy's nails scored his scalp lightly and sent a pleasant shiver down his back. "Mm, better."
She tightened her grip on his hair a little, making him yelp. Lucy giggled and kissed his pout, pulling a toothy grin from him.
Man, did he love seeing her happy.
They talked about nothing and anything, setting up a few more things and soon there was a knock at the door.
Natsu moved to get it, grinning when he opened the thick dark wood door and found Igneel there.
"Yo!"
"Heya, old man," Natsu greeted with a bright smile, pulling Igneel into a warm hug and helping him inside.
"Ha-ha, funny are you?"
"The funniest," Natsu teased. Both of them laughed as Natsu took the bags Igneel was holding and made their way back to the kitchen.
Happy trotted in before they reached it, mrowling loudly in the corner, a bit hesitant about the new person in the house.
Igneel grinned, setting his things down. "Hey, who's this cutie?"
"Oh that's Happy," Natsu chuckled, "I rescued him a few years ago. He can be a bit of a jerk when he wants to be."
"Then sweet when he wants," Lucy added with a soft laugh from where she was leaning against the counter.
Igneel breathed a raspy laugh too, leaning down to wiggle his fingers in greeting towards Happy. "Hi, Happy."
The cat slowly moved over slowly, flicking his tail and sniffing Igneel before letting him give some pets, quickly nudging his head into Igneel's palm. Then ran back over to his tower when he deemed Igneel okay and had enough.
"Glad I seemed to get his approval," Igneel grinned, making them laugh.
"Oh, Luce, this is Igneel. Dad, this is Lucy," Natsu introduced, setting the bags on the island.
"Hey, Lucy," Igneel grinned wide and bright, offering a hug to Lucy that she happily accepted.
"Hi! It's so nice to finally meet you, Igneel," Lucy said warmly when they pulled back.
"Same to you! I've heard nothing but amazing things and you're even more beautiful than Natsu said, how'd you settle for this guy?"
Natsu rolled his eyes at Igneel's wide teasing smirk and raspy laugh, pushing his dad's shoulder playfully.
Lucy laughed brightly, leaning against Natsu beside her. "He's alright." Her own teasing smile wide on her face.
Natsu gasped. "Luuceee," he pouted, crossing his arms.
He knew it wouldn't take long until they were both teasing at his expense, but a smile quirked on his lips at her laugh. That sound was worth anything.
"Oh, come here." Lucy pulled in his shoulder, bringing him lower to kiss his cheek, making him smile. "You know you're always more than that."
"Ah, young love," Igneel smirked. "Though, you're gettin' kinda old too, kid so I dunno…"
"Yeah, yeah," Natsu laughed, waving him off. "So you hungry? I was just gonna get the food on the grill out back."
"Getting to taste your grilling skills already? Think you already know the answer to that," Igneel grinned a wide smile as they got some drinks together with the food and made their way outside. "Oh, great set up you guys built out here," Igneel said, admiring the view around them and settling into one of the chairs towards the edge of the table. "Way better than before."
"Natsu spent a lot of weekends out here fixing up the old deck since he got back. Gray, Sting, and I helped out when we could, but someone insisted on doing most of it himself when we weren't around," Lucy said, sitting across from Igneel, giving Natsu a look.
Igneel barked out a laugh. "Sounds about right."
"What? You guys were busy sometimes and I didn't want you to get hurt with the heavy stuff," Natsu defended as he got the food on the grill.
"And we were trying to help you so you wouldn't get hurt either," Lucy said, sticking out her tongue at him.
Natsu huffed out a laugh. "Alright, alright, our next project I promise."
Natsu looked around them and couldn't help but feel a bit proud at how it all turned out.
There was an updated pergola above them, providing some shade, where the fairy lights were strung up on and along some of the railing.
The center opened up to three steps down onto a small gravel path to a fire pit and a couple lounge chairs towards the center of the yard, surrounded by the rest of the grass in the backyard.
He really had appreciated Lucy and his friend's help, but It helped him to have personal goals and projects like this when he was home sometimes. It helped his mind stay focused on something tangible, able to work with his hands and accomplish something himself.
He hadn't had much motivation for projects around the house before Lucy, content with the way things were for a long time, so it felt good to make some progress now.
There was still a bit more he wanted to do back here as well as inside. Maybe make some planters for a small garden for Lucy. Or some of her favorite succulents or sunflowers.
Maybe that could be their next project together.
Lucy hummed in prolonged thought, taking a sip from her drink.
"Still so stubborn, huh?" Igneel grinned, leaning back in his chair.
"I think we both can be," Lucy giggled.
Natsu moved back to the table, letting the food cook on its own for a bit and sitting across from Lucy. Mostly so he could admire her in the afternoon sun.
Radiant like the blooming flowers starting to bud from their winter sleep in the yard.
"Well… that may be a little true," Natsu admitted, hiding his smile by taking a sip from his beer glass.
"A little? I got a bunch'a photos of times where it was more than a little."
"There's photos?" Lucy gasped, eager glint in her eyes. "Oh, I have to see those."
Natsu groaned. "Let's not bore Luce with all that."
"I'll bring em' by next time," Igneel winked. Lucy laughed at Natsu's playful roll of his eyes, squeezing Natsu's hand over the table and filling his chest with warmth at the sight of her happy smile. "So, Natsu told me a bit about your relationship now, but how did you guys meet? Igneel asked, taking a drink from his own glass.
Lucy's expression softened with a warm smile, sharing a knowing look with Natsu. "Oh, we met when I moved back into town the other year," Lucy started. "I originally first met our mutual friend, Levy when I started college here in Magnolia. Natsu and I probably could've met earlier but I had a lot going on at the time and had to move back home for a while and couldn't finish back then." She tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear. "Levy and I had kept in touch and after I'd settled back in town for a week or so, I met up with her at that bar in town, Fairy Tail, one night and that's where I met Natsu and the rest of the group… it may or may not have involved some of my own clumsiness and a spilled drink on him," Lucy laughed, Natsu and Igneel joining her. "Then we were quick to become good friends after-"
"Best friends," Natsu defended playfully.
"Ah, yes, best friends," Lucy huffed another laugh and squeeze to his hand. "He helped me out a lot in the beginning, navigating the town and everything, and we kept in touch when Natsu was deployed that first time after I got here... then it just grew into more from there," she said softer. "and I couldn't help but fall for him and now here we are."
Lucy gave him an affectionate look that made his heart swell with so much love, he felt it could overflow. They'd come so far, and been through a lot together so far and Natsu was just so grateful. For her. For everything.
"It's clear how much you both care about each other and I'm so happy you found each other," Igneel said warmly, brown eyes kind. "You both deserve nothing less."
"Yeah, I'm happy too," Natsu grinned softly. They shared another meaningful look before Natsu stood and moved around the table. He gave an affectionate squeeze to Lucy's shoulder before adding, "I couldn't help falling for her too." He leaned down to press a warm kiss to Lucy's temple. She leaned into it, squeezing his hand on her shoulder before he moved to check on the food, giving her a toothy grin over his shoulder and liking the way her smile grew brighter and the pink on her cheeks.
"Y'all are gonna be bad for my sweet tooth," Igneel chuckled, making them laugh too.
"Can't help it," Natsu shrugged.
Maybe it was all those years on his own, and the time they spent apart when he was deployed, but each time he simply held Lucy close, each soft lingering touch of affection, or just being near her, sparked this need for affection in him. Only with her and he couldn't help indulge in the warm feeling.
"But hey, this really is some good work on this deck though, Natsu. You even put some of my coworkers to shame," Igneel said after a content moment.
Natsu breathed out a soft laugh. "I dunno about that. Like most of the stuff I've fixed up around here over the years, it was mostly from youtube, just trying to figure it out or remembering pieces of what you used to do around the house sometimes," Natsu admitted, scratching the back of his neck.
Igneel's expression softened. "Well, let me know if you ever need help with other projects around here. I'd be happy to help you out more."
"Will do." Natsu turned and gave him a genuine smile. "Now, I think this chicken is just about done. I also grilled up some veggies, and Luce made some really good pasta and salad too," he said, loading up the food from the grill and setting it on the table in the middle of them and smiling brightly at Lucy.
Lucy laughed, helping Natsu get their plates together as he took his seat again. "I hope it all came out okay, I tried some new recipes."
"Don't let her fool ya. Lucy's an amazin' cook. Way better than me."
Lucy looked over at Igneel with a grin. "He's exaggerating. I've just picked up some things over the years."
"I'm sure everything's great. I'm just happy to be havin' something good and home-cooked. I've been letting my cooking skills get rusty," Igneel chuckled, loading up his plate with food from the bowls and trays they passed him.
"Well then, let's dig in," Natsu said eagerly with a toothy grin.
They talked and laughed more while they all ate their fill, making a decent dent in all the food until their bellies were stuffed. Well, Natsu's sure was.
"True to your word, Natsu, everything was amazing," Igneel sighed happily, leaning back in his chair and rubbing over his belly. "Especially that pasta, Lucy. You'll have to give me the recipe."
Lucy breathed a laugh, tucking some of her hair behind her ear. "Thank you, I can definitely do that."
The early evening quickly settled around them, enjoying the cooler air and twinkles of the lights around them for a while longer until Natsu noticed Lucy shiver a little.
"Wanna head inside for dessert?"
Igneel and Lucy happily agreed with him. They settled around the center island while Natsu pulled open the freezer.
"Did you really have to bring this many different ice cream flavors? I can barely fit anything in here."
Igneel only laughed, setting his cane beside him while they sat at the stools. "Well, I wasn't sure if you liked the same flavors or which ones Lucy liked so I played it safe."
"Think we're set for a while now," Lucy grinned, "but I'll take some of that strawberry chocolate chip one, Natsu."
"Why yes, comin' right up ma'am," Natsu said, bowing at the waist, liking the soft laugh it pulled from her.
Natsu managed to get all the different scoops of flavors they each wanted, with a couple of cookies Igneel had also brought and sat on Lucy's other side.
"You both are going to be feeling that later."
Natsu looked at his and Igneel's bowls, seeing theirs piled with scoops of several different flavors, and some chocolate syrup, and smirked.
"You underestimate our stomachs, Luce. I may even get more after this."
Igneel nodded in agreement, humming around a large spoonful.
Lucy shook her head with a laugh, nudging Natsu's shoulder with hers.
Natsu noticed he and Igneel still shared so many similar mannerisms, easily falling back in sync with each other more and more. He'd missed it.
Natsu did end up getting a little bit more before they finished up and now he was full.
"I'm gonna head up and wash up, alright?"
"Yeah, sure. It's in the same place," Natsu said, watching as Igneel stood, gripping his cane. "Do you need help?"
Igneel waved him off. "Nah, I can still manage, thanks. Slowly, but I'll make it," he grinned before making his way up.
Maybe they should consider adding a small bathroom down here? Natsu thought to himself. So they, and others, wouldn't have to go all the way upstairs if they needed it. Definitely something to think about.
He and Lucy made their way into the living room, Natsu sighing deeply as they settled onto the couch, turning on the television to put something on.
"I'm so stuffed," Natsu groaned, head falling into the crook of Lucy's neck.
He felt her chuckle vibrate his head. "I may have told you so, but we both know you'll just be starving again by morning again."
"That's very likely, Miss Heartfilia," Natsu laughed, leaning up to kiss her jaw.
They relaxed into a few quiet content moments while a show was playing in the background.
"How've you been feeling about today so far?" Lucy asked with a squeeze to his hand between them.
Natsu took a deep breath, pulling up from her shoulder and resting his hand on her thigh.
"I feel good," he smiled softly. "It's better every time we talk and get to spend time together like this, rebuilding what we had… I've missed it. Missed him."
"I know," Lucy said warmly, "but there's still time to get things back. I'm happy you both reconnected like this."
He gave her thigh a soft squeeze. "Me too. You being here and getting to meet him and everything made it all that much better."
Lucy's smile brightened, cupping the back of his neck to bring him in for a soft lingering press of their lips that said everything it needed to.
Natsu gave her nose a quick peck as they pulled back, soon hearing footsteps start down the stairs.
"I like the fresh look upstairs too," Igneel said, making his way back down and towards them in the living room. "Bit more of Lucy's good design touch I see."
"Hey, I got some good decorating style," Natsu insisted.
Igneel gave him a teasing smile in reply as he settled on the armchair by them, resting his feet up on the ottoman in front of it.
"I admit, he has some. I just helped bring it out more and fine tune it," Lucy grinned, sifting a hand through his hair.
Natsu leaned into the touch. "See, told ya."
"Some . Definitely not like that black rug with all the flames you wanted to get for the bedroom."
Natsu barked out a full laugh, letting his head fall back. "Aww, c'mon, that would'a been cool, Luce."
Lucy hummed in disagreement.
"What store was it at? Maybe I'll get it for my place."
Lucy shook her head. "You guys are definitely family." They all shared a warm laugh at that.
"Y'know, I meant to say earlier, Natsu, but I didn't even notice you were this tatted," Igneel grinned, his eyes falling on the arm Natsu had propped up along the top of the couch cushions. "Probably 'cause we both had on long sleeves last time."
Natsu breathed a laugh. "Oh yeah, they just kinda started growing the past couple years after the first one."
Natsu looked over the colorful art that decorated his skin. Some meaningful, some just for fun, all becoming a part of himself over the years.
"I get that," Igneel grinned. "Do you have any, Lucy?"
"No… but I've been thinking about it," Lucy admitted, tucking her legs up on the couch.
Natsu looked over, smile widening in surprise. "Really?"
She hadn't shared that with him yet? Maybe it was supposed to be a surprise, but it was… really hot, thinking about Lucy with a tattoo. He'd have to ask her more about it later.
Lucy hummed, sharing a look with Natsu, her own smile growing. "Just a small one maybe."
"Well, that's how it always starts, with one. Then look what happens," Igneel said, gesturing towards Natsu.
Natsu stuck his tongue out at him, all sharing another warm laugh as they eventually settled on a cheesy comedy show Lucy had found.
Natsu couldn't help but take in the scene around him. Lucy's legs settled over his lap, his thumb brushing over her calf. Happy purred away contently on his other side, Igneel relaxing across from them, looking just as comfortable and at home as if they'd all been like this the whole time.
He smiled softly to himself, his heart swelling with such a warm, calming sense of belonging and love, and he let himself absorb all of it.
They got through a couple episodes, sharing some laughter and talking a bit in between before it eventually started getting late and Igneel told them he had to get going.
"You can always stay if you're tired? I can set up the other room?" Natsu asked Igneel as they all stood.
"I would, but I have some PT in the morning," Igneel said, straining a groan as he stretched, "thanks though, I may take you up on it next time."
Natsu nodded, giving Igneel a squeeze to his shoulder before Igneel stepped towards Lucy.
"Bye, Lucy. I'm so glad we got to meet. It was great getting to know you more and looking forward to spending more time together," Igneel grinned, pulling her in for a hug.
Lucy returned the hug tightly. "It was so good meeting you too, Igneel. I can't wait for that too." She pulled back with a bright smile. "Oh! We're actually all getting together for Natsu's birthday next week if you'd like to join us?"
Igneel's smile brightened. "Of course. Can't forget that day. I'd love to, thank you."
Natsu grinned, chest warming. "Oh, here, I'll walk you out." He grabbed Igneel's things as they moved towards the door, slipping their shoes back on.
"Bye again, Lucy, see you soon!" Igneel waved over his shoulder as they headed out the door.
"Bye!"
Igneel opened the door of his truck, setting his stuff down and turning the key to warm it up before turning back to Natsu, leaning back against the door jam.
"So, I love her already," Igneel said, making Natsu laugh. "You guys are good together. I can clearly see how much she loves you too."
Natsu smiled sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head. "Sometimes I can't believe it's me she fell for, like it's more than I deserve… but she makes it all worth it."
Igneel puts his hands on Natsu's shoulders with a warm grip. "You absolutely deserve all the good you have. Never doubt that, Natsu." The conviction in Igneel's voice was hard not to deny, along with the warmth and love in his eyes.
Natsu took a steadying breath and nodded, swallowing down the lump in his throat.
He pulled Igneel into a warm hug. "Thanks for coming over," he murmured against his shoulder, the taller man still had a couple inches over Natsu.
Igneel hugged him tighter. "Thanks for having me," he said as he pulled back, looking fondly towards the house. "You've made a great home here. I know how hard it was for you being here after everything…" Igneel said, voice softer, "but you've made it into something that's yours. For both of you. Your parents would be happy to see you so happy. I know I am."
Natsu breathed a rough laugh past the thick emotion in his throat, running a hand through his hair. "Thank you."
Igneel's expression softened with a warm grin, nodding. "See you both soon?
"Yeah, lookin' forward to it."
"Night, kiddo." Igneel gave Natsu another quick hug before stepping into his truck.
"Night, drive safe." Natsu waved, waiting until Igneel safely got on the road to head back inside where he found Lucy cleaning up in the kitchen.
"So, that was fun. I love him already," Lucy grinned brightly.
Natsu laughed. "Funny, that's what he said about you. Of course he would love you though, he has someone new to tease me with."
Lucy giggled at his pout, walking over to wrap her arms around his waist. "You know it's out of love. From both of us."
Natsu hummed in false agreement, but a wide grin found its way on his lips as he pulled her closer in his arms with a kiss to her nose.
"He really did love you though, like I knew he would 'cause how can anybody not. Told ya it would be okay," he grinned, thumb brushing over the small of her back.
Natsu noticed she seemed a little nervous the day before. The thought of meeting a significant other's parental figure was a little daunting, she'd said, but Natsu did his best to reassure her. He was happy when her and Igneel both seemed to be comfortable and get along well so soon after meeting. It meant a lot to him.
Lucy grinned, soft flush on her cheeks as she held him tighter. "Well, he's your dad and he's important to you. Of course I wanted it to go well."
"You're important to me too," Natsu reassured softly, "and I loved having both of you here."
Lucy's expression softened, reaching up to cup his face. "I love you," she whispered sweetly before pulling him down for a slow kiss.
Natsu sighed into it and melted against her, kissing her a little deeper with a squeeze to her waist, drinking in the soft sounds she breathed.
"Love you more," he murmured against her lips.
He'd never tire of the strong, warm feeling of content and affection that surged through him when they said those words.
They eventually managed to put away the rest of the food and clean up a bit more before finally making their way upstairs to wash up and change for the night.
"So, a tattoo huh?" Natsu asked with a wide grin when they got settled in the bed and propped himself up on an elbow, laying on his side.
Lucy huffed a laugh, settling in beside him. "It's been on my mind lately," she admitted, trailing fingers over the art on his arm. "Maybe something on my shoulder or wrist. What do you think?"
Natsu hummed. "I think I'll like anything you'd pick, but I also think that'd be really hot," Natsu smirked, leaning down to give her a quick kiss.
Lucy giggled as she rolled her eyes playfully at him. "What? It's true." Natsu laughed, turning to flick off the lamp before dropping down onto his pillow.
Natsu was quick to pull her close, nuzzling into her hair with a kiss to the back of her head.
"Mm, night, Natsu," Lucy murmured, smile in her voice, tangling their legs together.
Natsu grinned softly to himself, sighing in content. "Night, Luce."
Natsu groaned and shifted onto his side. He put a hand out, feeling the sheets beside him and found it empty.
Taking a deep breath, he slowly blinked his eyes open. Lucy wasn't there, probably already downstairs getting started on her morning.
He stretched and felt for his phone on the bedside table beside him. 'Oh, maybe a little later than morning,' he thought to himself as he saw the time was already almost noon.
He took another moment to collect himself before sitting up and stretching. Grateful that his head wasn't hurting like it had been yesterday. His migraine meds really knock him out sometimes, making him sleep longer than he realized.
Natsu had been feeling a bit off for the past week. If it wasn't his shoulder or back, it was his head, and even just mentally. Lucy was understanding as always, there when he needed someone to vent to, and offered her support when he needed a little time to himself. He always did his best to show her how much he appreciated her.
He grabbed some clothes and headed to the bathroom for a quick shower, the warm water soothing the lingering tension in his shoulders.
Natsu finished up, throwing his clothes in the hamper after changing into some soft comfortable soft shorts and a shirt, realizing there was a good smell coming up from the kitchen as he made his way downstairs.
Lucy spotted him from behind the center island, looking up from what she was working on and giving him a glowing smile.
"Hey, there you are," she greeted brightly.
Natsu gave her a toothy grin. "Mornin', Luce." He came over and leaned against the counter beside her, hugging her to his side and admiring the source of the amazing smells. Several plates of some of his favorite breakfast foods were sitting on the counter and the stove. "This what you've been working on? Sorry I slept kinda longer than usual, I could'a helped you out."
"It's your birthday, you're entitled to get your beauty sleep," she teases, leaning closer to circle her arms up around his neck before her expression softens a little with a bit of concern. "Did you sleep any better?"
Natsu melted into the touch of her fingers sifting through his hair.
"Mm, I must've since I didn't even feel you get up earlier."
She smiled. "You were knocked out pretty hard this morning. Tried to wake you but no luck."
Natsu laughed, squeezing her waist softly. "This all looks so good though. Did you already eat? You didn't have to wait for me, Luce," he said, looking over the food that was making his stomach growl.
"I wanted to. Happy birthday, babe ," Lucy grinned, giving him a quick kiss.
Natsu smiled into the kiss too. "Thanks, babe. Let's dig in, I'm sure you're starvin' too."
Natsu helped her take the plates to the dining table and they happily started into the waffles, bacon, and several other plates until they were stuffed and content.
"You sure do have that magic touch, Luce. That was so good," Natsu sighed heavily as he flopped back against the couch cushion where they migrated to after brunch, munching on a cookie.
"You say that every time," she grinned, walking around the couch with something in her hands. "But I'm glad you enjoyed it. I hope you like this too." She sat beside him, handing him a bag with a warm expression.
"Lucy… you've already-"
"I know I didn't have to, but just accept that your birthday is always going to be celebrated now and I'm gonna shower you with gifts, okay?" Lucy wore a playful smile, affection in those brilliant eyes.
Natsu's smile grew into a toothy one. "Alright, Luce. If you say so."
He pulled the tissue out of the large bag, reaching inside and pulling out what felt like a frame.
His breath hitched a little. It was a large shadow box, filled with items and pictures of when he was young, and some of him and Lucy, along with their friends.
Lucy moved to sit beside him. "I'd found a couple boxes with some pictures and things when we were cleaning out the rooms before. They looked memorable so I wanted to do a little something for you with some of them… hope you don't mind."
Natsu caught a bit of nerves in her warm eyes when he looked over at her, clearing his throat. "Of course I don't," he reassured softly, reaching over to grasp her hand before looking back down at the frame, "this is… I'd- I've never seen these older ones, not that I can remember…"
He took in the sight one of the pictures of his younger self settled on his father's shoulders, his mom beside them, all smiling at the camera. Another of him and Igneel when he was a bit older, sitting on a park bench with Igneel ruffling his hair and Natsu trying to push his arm away with a wide smile and others that made his chest tighten.
Several small tickets of things they must've done together were also pinned inside. Movies, arcades, he couldn't exactly remember going to each one but loved the thought of them all being saved like this.
The ones of him and Lucy he remembered and the couple with them and their friends, the ticket stubs to the fair they first went together with Lucy, everything holding such meaning for him.
"I thought it'd be nice to incorporate some past things with your family with some of what you have now," Lucy added softly, "and I started putting the rest in an album for you if you want to see the rest later?"
It was a seemingly simple gift, but a deep warmth flowed through him. A steady calm like the peaceful moments of daybreak. Where you can breathe in and you feel safe and content. Whole.
Along the way, their love had evolved and deepened so much. The understanding and support they had for each other, on every level was so strong. In the happy moments, rough moments, and everything in between, with each part of themselves. Everything he thought he'd never have. Everything he used to feel would be too much for him to share with anyone, let alone someone as amazing as Lucy and have her feel just as strongly for him.
The feeling washed over him so strongly, he had to swallow thickly as he gathered her in a tight, warm hug, burying his face in her hair.
"I love you... so much, Lucy," Natsu murmured, voice thick with emotion. "Thank you for this. Seeing everyone I love together like this... it's perfect." His thumb brushed along the edge of the frame reverently with his other hand as Lucy hugged him back tightly for a few long moments. Natsu pulled back to curl the hair that had fallen from her bun behind her ear, palm shifting to caress her cheek. "I'll always miss my parents, but you're just as much a part of me as they are. You're everything."
Her amber eyes glossed over a bit, leaning into his palm. "You're mine too, Natsu... I love you."
Natsu let the words swell in his chest, admiring all of the emotion swirling in those bright eyes that he loved. He smiled a small, warm smile before he pulled her in for a slow kiss.
He felt her sigh against him, circling her arms up around his neck and deepening it with a tilt of her head.
They were content to spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing with some movies. Natsu looked through the photo album Lucy started to put together at one point, telling her some stories he remembered about certain photos as they laid along the couch, propped up with some pillows, legs tangled together and sharing warm laughs and soft kisses as he held Lucy close, Happy purring in content in their laps.
Natsu's past may still hold some hurt, but he'd grown to look back on it fondly with everything he was able to have and all that it gave him. Now, as he looked over at the shadow box that sat on the coffee table, one that was holding all the different pieces of himself, his future was what he was holding in his arms.
Natsu turned to press a warm kiss to her temple. That much he was sure of.
Natsu met Lucy downstairs by the door once they managed to get off the couch and ready to meet their friends for dinner, catching her slipping on her faded denim jacket she often liked to wear.
"So, are you ready to be showered with more birthday attention?" Lucy asked, giving him a bright grin.
A reflection of light caught his eye, recognizing the pin he'd given her for their anniversary attached near the chest pocket with a couple other cute ones, heart swelling with affection.
"Yup, ready when you are," he grinned, tugging on his own jacket and pocketing his keys and a couple other things he needed before holding out an elbow for her while bowing at the waist.
The sound of her laugh filled him with content warmth. She slipped her arm through his and they headed out.
The drive didn't take long, and their friends were quick to notice them once they made their way inside Mira's restaurant.
"Hey, there he is!" Sting cheered happily, alerting the others to their arrival.
Sting pulled Natsu in for a hug, wishing him a happy birthday. Natsu laughed and thanked him with a tight hug in return, followed by a hug from Rogue and Yukino beside him.
"Lucy! Natsu!" Levy chirped, Gajeel slowly helping her from the chair to make her way around the table towards them, careful of her growing belly.
She hugged Lucy first since she was closer. "Look at you! Oh, it's getting close isn't it?"
"Ugh, yes. Three more months. So close yet still so far," Levy laughed before moving to give Natsu a quick hug. "Happy birthday, Natsu! I'm happy I'm still able to get around and celebrate with you guys."
Natsu chuckled. "Thanks, Levy. I'm glad you guys are here too, you look great."
Levy thanked him happily before Gajeel offered his hand for Natsu to shake and clapped his shoulder.
"So are you ready for parenthood? Can't believe you guys are havin' twins,'' Natsu said, shaking his head with a laugh.
Gajeel breathed a raspy chuckle. "You and me both. Kinda nervous but kinda can't wait to meet em'," Gajeel admitted with a rare soft flush on his cheeks as he scratched the back of his neck.
Natsu admired the honesty in his tall, often gruff, friend's voice. "Know you're gonna be an awesome dad, and Levy a wonderful mom. You got this," Natsu said with a reassuring squeeze to Gajeel's shoulder.
He nodded, giving Natsu a grateful look and a tap of his fist on Natsu's chest.
"Happy birthday, Natsu," Erza said warmly, pulling him in for a hug next, "How are things?"
Natsu grinned and thanked her, shaking Jellal's hand before he Erza started to catch up a little.
"Hey, hey, look who actually got here before us."
Natsu turned and huffed a laugh when he saw Gray, accepting a hug from his other best friend.
"Happy birthday. You're gettin' so old I barely recognize you," Gray teased, "but glad Lucy finally got you to agree to let us celebrate with you."
Natsu tsked. "You guys have dragged me to enough birthday things before."
"Not enough," Gray disagreed.
Lucy laughed as she moved to give Gray a hug too.
"We gotta make up for all the times he told me he said it 'wasn't a big deal' after all," she grinned playfully.
"Exactly! You spent too many at home doing nothing without us," Sting argued, leaning against Rogue.
Natsu rolled his eyes and chuckled. "Alright, alright." He gave Lucy's hand an affectionate squeeze.
He had to agree. If it wasn't for Lucy planning something last year and now, it probably would be just another day he would be spending at home after telling their friends he didn't feel like doing much, like he had most of the years before.
They heard a loud greeting behind them, Natsu turning to see Igneel walking up to them.
There was excited cheers from the group.
"Hey! Happy birthday, kiddo," Igneel said, large warm grin on his face.
Natsu grinned and stepped into his hug, familiar warmth surrounding him.
"Thanks, old man."
Igneel ruffled his hair for good measure before the rest of their friends made their way to say hello to him, eventually pulling Gray into a hug.
Natsu had told Gray about how he and Igneel had reconnected recently. He'd been supportive and said how he'd missed having him around too.
"It's so good to see you, Gray," Igneel said warmly when they pulled back with a squeeze to his arm. "How've you been?"
"Things have been good," Gray smiled, starting to catch up as the group got settled around the table and enjoying some comfortable conversation for a bit.
"Natsu!"
Natsu looked up at the call and saw Wendy had walked in with a bright smile and a big wave.
Natsu matched her smile. "Hey!" He stood and wrapped her in a tight, warm hug. "So happy to see you, it's been a while."
"I know!" Wendy agreed after they pulled back and gave Lucy a quick hug too. "Things were busy with school, but midterms are finally over now," she huffed. "Then Lucy called me about your birthday dinner and I had to make it!" Wendy gasped when she turned and caught sight of Igneel. "Uncle Igneel! It's really you!"
"Wendy!" Igneel stood and caught her in a hug.
Wendy's mother was a single mom and a good friend of his parents so Natsu and Wendy would come over his house often growing up. They technically weren't related, but they'd gotten pretty close when they were younger and his parents had always just called them cousins, so it had stuck.
He saw her less after his parents passed, sometimes still coming over to visit him and Igneel, but didn't take away from everything they shared and he still loved catching up when they could.
Natsu sat between Igneel and Lucy, Wendy across from him. His heart warmed as he looked up at the rest of his friends surrounding the table. Maybe he really had gone without this for too long, he thought to himself, smiling softly.
Cana arrived fashionably late as always and then they all finally get around to eating when the food comes with some more laughter and comfortable conversation. A bit later, he noticed Mira come out through the doors behind the bar with a large cake in her hands.
"We got a birthday, everyone!" She cheered loud enough for everyone in the place to hear with a bright smile, a couple of waiters and Lisanna following her and making their way over to the table as other people clapped from their tables.
Natsu groaned, putting his face in his hands as they cheered and sang from around the table, hiding his smile behind his hand.
He blew out the candles after they all sang, making more cheers break out.
He couldn't help but laugh. Lucy kissed his cheek, Igneel ruffling his hair after clapping the loudest.
Mira and Lisanna gave him a hug and joined them back at the table to cut the cake.
"Alright, who's idea was that?" Natsu said, narrowing his eyes at Gray and Igneel playfully.
Igneel barked out a laugh, holding his hands up. "Don't look at us."
Natsu hummed, not believing him for a second until he turned and caught Lucy's knowing smile.
"Luce."
Lucy breathed out a giggle, her full smile growing. "Aw, come on. I couldn't help but tell them to make it a little bit extra. It was fun wasn't it?"
Natsu hummed again, leaning in to press a kiss to her cheek. "As long as it's you."
"Hmf, we wouldn't have gotten that reaction," Gajeel said across from them with a smirk.
Levy pushed her boyfriend's arm. "Oh shush, you. I think it's sweet," she grinned with a wink towards Lucy.
Natsu stuck out his tongue at Gajeel, wrapping his arms around the back of Lucy's chair and shoulders and pressing a kiss to her temple.
Lucy laughed softly, curling some hair behind her ear and he likes the way a soft pink dusted over her cheeks.
The rest of the night went on with more laughter. Natsu thanked them all for the cards and gifts they'd gotten him, with a promise to open them later.
"Oh! Guys," Cana said suddenly, voice dramatically urgent. "I ran into Mak recently and he said they closed down Fairy Tail this week!" Cana cried, distraught, getting sad replies from the group. "Guess he wanted to retire and couldn't really keep up with costs anymore. He at least could've given us a warning! I didn't even get to enjoy a farewell drink," she sighed, resting her cheek on a palm on the table.
"You do know you more than make up for it here right?" Lisanna laughed as she finished off some of her cake. "And don't think we haven't noticed when you meet up with that pretty woman for drinks every other week lately," Lisanna added, pointing her fork in Cana's direction with a knowing smile.
There are several teasing 'ooh's' from the group.
"Well…" A rare blush dusted across Cana's cheeks, brushing some of her long brown hair over her shoulder as her smile grows. "That's a story for another night, 'cause tonight's our dear Natsu's night." She raised her glass towards Natsu.
Natsu laughed, the group accepting Cana's deflection… for now, and cheered for him. He clinked his glass with the others in the middle of the table. His grin was happy and content as Lucy laced their fingers together under the table after, Igneel giving his shoulder and affectionate squeeze.
He took in the sight of his friends and family that surrounded him, each of them meaning so much to him in their own way. He realized just how much he'd missed all of them being together like this.
Each of their own busy lives kept them all busy and apart most of the time the past few years, and Natsu knew he had his own part in being a little distant at times, but he hoped they'd continue to get together more after this.
They all finished up and eventually made their way back out to the parking lot after Mira loaded each of them up with leftovers.
More hugs were exchanged as they all said bye to him and Lucy, Igneel being one of the last ones lingering back with them.
"Hope you had a great birthday, kiddo," Igneel grinned warmly, "I brought you a little something." He pulled out a smaller sized manila envelope from the inner chest pocket of his jacket. It looked a bit worn and like it'd been folded many times over. "You don't gonna open 'em now but... all the time we were apart, I never forgot your birthday so I'd kept some things along the way. I wanted to send them to you a couple times but time got the better of me... so I'd been saving 'em."
Natsu thumbed over the worn paper in his hands, peeking inside to see several cards and other items inside. He looked up at Igneel's open, kind eyes. "Dad…"
"It's okay," Igneel reassured, "I have some birthdays to make up for so consider it a start." He gave Natsu another kind smile.
Natsu huffed a laugh, accepting his gesture and stepping in to give Igneel a tight lingering hug. "Thanks."
"Anytime. Now, get home safe, you two. See you soon!" Igneel waved at them, grinning brightly before hopping into his truck.
Lucy and him gave a wave back. "Well, let's head home shall we?" Natsu said, opening the passenger door of his truck for Lucy with a wide smile.
"Sounds perfect," she laughed softly, leaning up to give him a quick kiss to his jaw before stepping into the truck.
Natsu sighed as they walked back into the house. They hooked up their jackets and set their things down before making their way to the kitchen to put away the leftovers.
"Well that was fun," Lucy grinned, taking a long drink of water.
"It was," Natsu grinned, setting his hands on each side of her to hold her against the island counter. "Thanks for planning all that tonight," he said warmly. "It really was nice to see everyone after so long and spend time together. With you."
Lucy's expression softened, reaching up to caress his cheek, thumb brushing over his scar gently. "You're welcome. Happy birthday, love."
Warmth swelled in his chest at the name, leaning into kiss her slowly. Her lips were warm and addicting, sighing against his. Her hands wound up around his neck, pulling him closer as she tilted her head to deepen the kiss with a soft brush of her tongue along his bottom lip.
Natsu hummed, settling his palms at her waist and pulling her closer against him. Lucy smiled into the kiss when his fingers brushed along her sides.
"Don't."
Natsu smirked against her lips. "What?" he said, feigning innocence.
"No what. I could already tell what you were thinking," Lucy said, narrowing her eyes at him playfully with a tug to his hair.
Natsu chuckled lowly and pouted, a teasing smile following. "Fine, fine. I won't tickle you… right now."
Lucy rolled her eyes but before she had a chance to say anything, she yelped as he picked her up and set her on the counter behind them, stepping in closer in between her legs.
"If this is your way of distracting me…"
"You'd be into it?" he said, smirk back on his lips as his palms lowered to smooth over her full thighs.
"Maybe," Lucy murmured, her own smile lifting her lips, soft blush forming on her cheeks.
Natsu laughed a little fuller before he leaned in to start pressing slow, warm kisses to the soft skin underneath her jaw, traveling up until he reached her ear.
"I can definitely help with that," he rasped lowly, giving into the pleasure that was starting to spark in his belly as he continued his trail of slow kisses along her skin.
Lucy's breath hitched in reply, hands coming up to squeeze his shoulders at the soft nip to her earlobe before his lips trailed down to her neck. He found one of the soft, sensitive spots by her shoulder that always drew such pretty sounds from her.
Which he couldn't help but take pride in. After all the intimate moments he'd taken his time to memorize the curves and dips of her body, the sprinkle of freckles that decorated her soft skin, all the ways he could make her melt in his arms.
Natsu's hands pushed under her shirt, her bare skin soft and warm as pulled up to connect their lips in a heated kiss right as he palmed her plush breasts over her bra, drinking in her moan.
Lucy broke the kiss for a moment to fling off her shirt, and before he could fully process it she resumed the searing kiss, tongue dragging a hot path over his bottom lip.
Natsu breathed a rough groan, holding her flush against him as he kissed her deeper. His own tongue met hers, threading a hand through that soft honeyed hair. Lucy captured his wet muscle for a moment with a light suck of her mouth, sending sharp tingles of heat down his spine.
"Nghh, I'm so fuckin' crazy about you, Luce," he rasped against her lips. "Can't get enough."
Lucy hummed. "Mm, I can't get enough of you too."
She pulled Natsu back in for a more tender, lingering kiss that had him being the one to melt against her, with a hot lick into her mouth. Natsu's palms settled back at her waist. Her own hands trailed from his neck, slowly down his chest and torso until she reached the hem of his shirt and tugged it up.
Natsu took the hint, breaking the kiss to pull it off him, uncaring of where it fell.
He looked back at her and a wave of heat throbbed in him at the way Lucy's hazy gaze trailed over him.
The vision she created, with her plush, kiss swollen lips parted with rough breaths, hair mussed from his fingers, with a flush making its way to her chest, her full breasts held in her tasteful black bra, it was all almost too much. Along with the thought that he was the only one who got to see her like this, sent white hot want straight south.
Lucy pulled him in for a rough kiss before pressing slower, warm kisses along his jaw and lower to his flushed neck. She pressed a softer tender one to the scar there, making his chest swell with affection for a moment before she gave him a soft bite and soothed it with a hot tongue across his skin.
Natsu groaned deeply, hips twitching at the action, grinding roughly against her core. He was already achingly hard and throbbing in his too tight jeans. The friction against her only adding to the building heat within him.
Lucy breathed a needy call of his name against his skin, peppering more kisses along his collarbone and moving to wrap her legs around his waist as she sucked a mark onto a soft spot on his neck. Natsu tilted his head so her sweet lips could have as much access as they wanted. Her hips rocked against him again, dragging another rough groan from his throat, palms gripping her waist, fingers dipping past the hem of her jeans before trailing back up and filling his palms with her breasts.
"Natsu…" Lucy breathed, an airy whimper by his ear. "I want you." Her grip tight in his hair, thighs squeezing him closer.
Natsu blinked his eyes open, unaware when they'd closed. Maybe from the pleasure. He took a few rough breaths, eyes widening a little as the meaning of her words sank in, heat shooting straight to his core.
Oh. Oh.
