Ares was considered one of the most loyal among the Greek pantheon, and was all too willing to carry out just any order given to him by his father Zeus. This was usually because these orders involved battle and bloodshed, which is what he thrived on. If there was a monster that needed to be slayed, he was one of the first to volunteer. If there was a battle with another pantheon that needed to be fought, he was on the front lines.
And if there was a city that rebelled against the gods themselves, then he was typically the one sent to reign down divine punishment on them.
He marched towards the city, his shield and spear at the ready as his hounds walked at his side. He smiled, looking forward to the upcoming battle ahead. He doubted any of the humans within the village would give him a worthy fight, but even if they didn't there still would be carnage to enjoy.
"Are you ready to revelry in combat?" he asked, chuckling. The two dogs barked in excitement, ready to rip and tear apart whatever they were pointed at on command.
When he reached the gates of the city, he slammed his spear against the ground, causing a thundering echo to ring through the air. "City of Acike! You have sinned against the heavens and the gods who dwell within it by withholding worship! For this grave since against your betters, you will be-"
The doors of the gate suddenly opened, and Ares stopped mid speech. He raised an eyebrow, clearly confused. He knew the watchers at the gate had seen him, so they must have known who he was and why he was here. Were they trying to save themselves with a last minute act of submission? Or maybe they wanted to negotiate.
Either way it wouldn't work. He had his orders, and he intended to carry them out. If anything this just ticked him off more. He had wanted to make a grand entrance by kicking in the gates. He supposed he could just have to find another way to stir things up.
"You can save your lofty speech. No one is in the mood to hear it, least of all me."
Ares looked confused as a lone figure made its way out from the gates. His eyes then went wide as he recognized the features his father had warned him about. No, it couldn't be. Why would he be here?
A young Typhon cracked his neck as he spread his wings out. The titan had a smirk on his face as he walked up to meet the Olympian, who now looked on guard. He had heard tales from his father, and the fellow members of his pantheons about this monster. He had no idea what he was doing here right now, but he knew he had to be on guard.
"What are you doing here, despicable monster," he said, pointing his spear at him. "I have come to carry out divine justice against the heathens behind you. There is no reason for you to be here, or involve yourself. Leave now and I'll pretend I didn't see you and spare your lowly life."
If it was possible, he would have liked to slay the beasts here and now. But his orders came first and foremost, and if he had to fight both him and the city's warriors, mortal as they were, it might have been a bit too much for even him to handle. He was a warrior, and a mighty one. But being a god of war, he knew when the odds were against him.
Typhon chuckled as the gates behind him began to close. "Oh, what a generous offer, o mighty god of war. But I'm afraid I'm going to have to turn it down," he said, shrugging his shoulders. "You see, aside from pissing your old man off, I do have a reason for not letting you destroy this place."
Ares scoffed. "You actually intend to protect this city? Did they fall to their knees and worship you out of sheer desperation? Surely you didn't do this from the kindness of your heart. Or whatever your creatures have that pumps that filthy blood through your veins," he said angrily.
Typhon let out a boisterous laugh. "You're kidding?! You don't think I actually did this to be worshiped, did you? I'm not like you gods. I don't need the mortals fawning over me to feel important. You are right about me not doing this out of kindness though. This city just happens to make really good cheese."
"Cheese?" Ares asked, disbelief clear on his face.
Typhon nodded. "Oh yes. Some of the most delicious cheese I've ever tasted. I mean it's downright mouthwatering. I come here quite often to get a few wheels. Imagine my surprise when I heard the gods had it pegged for destruction. I'm sorry, but I just can't have that. Not at all," he said.
Ares gripped his spear and grit his teeth. "This isn't your dimension! These are not your people! You have no say about what actions we take against those who defy-!"
"Does it look like I care even the slightest bit about where your jurisdiction lies?" Typhon asked, tilting his head. "If I'm in it, then it's my dimension. If I'm standing on it, it's my land. If I claim it, then it's mine and mine alone. You won't be touching this place. You'll turn around and leave, or die."
Ares looked furious. "Blasphemous little-! Fine, if it's a fight you want, then it is yours! I will take your head and present it to my father as a gift!" He pointed toward the titan, and his hounds both barked and rushed forward at him. Their razor sharp teeth were bared, and they looked ready to tear him apart.
Typhon stood calmly, and then crossed his arms. "Pathetic. Sending beasts to fight your battles for you." He let loose the King's Call, and the hounds only made it about halfway to him before sliding to a stop. The call hadn't been enough to down them, but he'd shown them a little glimpse as just what they were in for.
The two of them both lowered their heads, whimpering as they shook in place. "W-what is wrong with you? Get him!" Ares demanded. The hounds didn't move an inch, their feet frozen to the ground. Ares was about to shout at them again, but then Typhon spoke out towards them.
"Don't be angry. The beasts are simply following their instincts," Typhon said. "If anything, I would say this makes them a great smarter than I imagined. Even with all the foolish orders you've probably put in their head, they know full well what will happen if they rush over here."
Ares growled once more before getting ready to charge. "Insolent wretch! If you think you can beat me because you intimidated a few animals, then you're in for a nasty surprise!" He was the god of war. A natural born warrior and the paragon of manly virtues. He wasn't going to be bested by this… thing.
He charged in, his shield raised and his spear ready to strike out. Typhon didn't move an inch however. He just smirked towards the charging god. "Alright then, come on."
Ares yelled out, stabbing at him with his spear. Typhon moved his head to the side, but Ares kept rushing forward and crashed into his chest with his shield. He put all his might and weight into the blow, and… only managed to push him back a few feet. "Come now, surely the famed god of war had more strength than that?"
Ares strained to try and force him back further, but Typhon wasn't giving up any ground. Eventually the titan decided to start pushing back, and Ares found himself being forced backwards. He tried to plant his feet, but Typhon continued to casually move him further and further back. "Just leave, while you still have your dignity…"
The war god brought his other arm back and stabbed at Typhon's face, but he once again moved his head, knocking the blade of the spear aside with his horn. In one swift movement, Typhon's tail moved around and grabbed his ankle, pulling his foot from under him and causing him to fall to the ground.
He lifted his foot and stomped down, and Ares raised his shield to defend himself. While the shield held, his entire body was forced into the ground, causing a crater beneath him. "Your title as a master of war may be impressive to the mortals and gods…" He stomped down again, and Ares grunted in pain. It felt like his arms were going to snap. "But before me, it means nothing."
He stomped down again, but this time Ares rolled out of the way at the last moment. He got up to his feet, throwing the shield at the titans, who swatted it aside. Not a single moment later however, Typhon found his spear soaring right towards where one of his hearts was. "Die you savage!"
CRACK!
Typhon simply stared down at the god, who wore a look of utter shock on his face as he watched his spear snap in two. The half with the blade spun through the air, landing in the ground behind him. That… that was impossible. His weapon of divine origin. It was capable of harming even the sturdiest of divine beasts. couldn't just be broken so easily.
Before the reality of what happened could fully sink in though, Typhon swung down at him. Ares raised his hand and blocked the blow, but was forced down to one knee. "But if you insist on testing your strength against me, then fine. I'll show you what a real titan can do," he said, his smirking growing even wider.
Ares struggled to keep upright, but his whole body was feeling the strain. "What are you?!" he asked. This unforgiving and unyielding power. It was madness.
"Better…" Typhon answered before raising his foot and kicking him in the chest.
Ares rolled back, quickly getting to his feet. He rushed at him, focusing all of his power into his fist. He swung at Typhon, landing a few blows and actually managed to send him stumbling back. But when he swung again and aimed at his face, the titan reached up and caught his fist.
Ares quickly swung the other, but Typhon caught it just as easily. He tried to pull himself free, but Typhon's grip was like iron. "I admire your tenacity if nothing else, god of war. But unfortunately your refusal to accept defeat means this will be a long, and very painful experience," he said before headbutting him.
The god was sent falling back, and his head bleeding from the blow. He winced, now understanding why his father had been so weary of this creature. He couldn't even remember the last time he actually bled, yet here he was doing just that.
"But, for the sake of killing my boredom, try to hang in there," Typhon said, cracking his knuckles. It wasn't often he found an excuse to tangle witha god, so he would enjoy it for however long it lasted.
Zeus looked down at the bloodied and beaten figure of his son. When he had looked down to check and see if the city of Acike had been destroyed, he'd been more than a little surprised to see it was still standing, and untouched at that. Ares had always been one to revelry in his work, but he never dawddled this long.
But there had been no explanation needed once he had gotten to the gates of Olympus and seen Typhon standing over his son. The titan had a smug expression on his face as he stepped on Ares' back, looking like a hunter who was showing off his hunted game. "I have to say, I'm disappointed in you old man. That's what, two sons I've bested in combat now? I was expecting more of a challenge."
Zeus balled his fist up, the air around him became far more tense and foreboding. The other gods nearby were torn between their worry for their leader, the sight of their greatest enemy standing over the defeated form of one of their best warriors. "You little parasite…" Zeus said. "Do you think you'll get away with this?"
Typhon reached down and grabbed Ares, throwing him over towards the leader of the pantheon. Zeus reached up and casually caught him by the ankle. "He's still breathing. Which is more than he deserves. But next time I won't be so kind to him, or any other god I catch trying to do harm against Acike," Typhon warned.
Zeus grunted. "Do you think this will stop me from destroying that city? You can't always be around to protect it. It will fall, no matter how much they rally around you."
"No it won't," Typhon said simply. "Because if it does, there will be consequences. If I find out it's been destroyed. If I find out any of you have been there, or that even a single bolt of lightning comes down on it, I will return. And I will bring an army of my kind with me."
"You would declare war against us over a single city?" Zeus asked, looking both annoyed and insulted by the threat.
"I've fought battles over less. And I like cheese," he said, enjoying the confused look that came across some of their faces at the latter statement. "I know you'll probably go crawling to the other pantheons for help, but it won't matter. If nothing else, I'll make sure that we wipe out your entire pantheon. All of Olympus will be drowned within the blood of you and yours. I promise you that."
Typhon didn't wait for a response, instead spreading his wings and then taking off before the god could get a word in. Zeus watched him leave with a glare. He didn't know if Typhon was telling the truth about his arm of titans. The titans on Earth were small in number, and disorganized. But the ones in his dimension… he wasn't so sure.
For now, Acike would stand. But once he was finally rid of Typhon for good, he would go and burn down the city himself.
"Thank you!"
"We owe you our lives!"
"You're our savior!"
Typhon yawned as he made his way past the residents of Acike city. He waved off the people crowning around him to thank him for his protection. He supposed he understood just why they were so thankful. They'd been on the brink of death before he showed up. But it wasn't as if he had done it out of any love for them.
He hadn't been joking about the cheese. "How could we possibly thank you for saving us from the wrath of the gods great Typhon?" one of them asked.
Typhon hummed as he made his way towards his favorite stand. "I didn't expect a reward out of it, but if you're so set on giving one I'd certainly wouldn't say no to a whole wheel of your best cheese," he said pointing towards the women at the counter.
She quickly nodded. "It's yours! In fact, I have three!" she said practically shoving them into his hands. "And trust that there will always be one waiting just for you whenever you return!" He had always been an odd but loyal customer, and now he was the city's savior as well. A lifetime of free cheese was a small price to pay in her mind.
"Much appreciated," Typhon said before taking a bite out of one of them. He supposed he should have brought the other two back for his brother and Argus… then again, he could always hide them away and eat them himself. It wasn't like they helped save the city, right?
An elderly man approached him. "Lord Typhon, are you sure there isn't anything else we can do to show our gratitude? You stood up to the gods in our stead. It's a debt we could never truly repay, but…"
Typhon grunted, not sure that he liked being referred to as lord. But another idea did pop into his head. He remembered all the other cities he had visited before now. They all had temples and statues dedicated to those arrogant pricks in Olympus. Things meant to immortalize them.
"Well, I do have one idea."
"Well, I'll be damned, it's still here. Take a look boy."
Astro narrowed his eyes as he looked up at the statue of… yep, that was his father alright. But there was someone else there too. "Who's the one you're stepping on?" he asked, looking down at the figure curiously.
Typhon pointed. "That's Ares. He's the one I beat up to save the city. Humans really are confusing little things. You beat up one god of war and they're willing to fall on their knees and worship you for life," he said, taking in a breath.
Astro blinked, and then looked around at the rest of the city. "I'm honestly shocked that any of this is still standing. You've been gone for so long. I figured Zeus would have destroyed it after you were sealed away."
"He didn't know I was sealed. It wasn't as if he ever came to mewni. For all he knew I still have an army of titans at the ready," Typhon said shrugging his shoulders. "Take a look at this statue and be filled with pride, boy. Know that our kind towers even above the gods."
"I'm not so much feeling pride as I am a sense of… arrogance? I mean did you really need a statue? It seemed a little gaudy."
"Well it was less about me and more about spitting Zeus…"
Before Astro could answer, a young woman made her way over towards him. "Uh, excuse me," she said looking curious. "You wouldn't happen to be… well, I know this may sound crazy, but are you Typhon?"
Astro was about to tell her no, but he realized how ridiculous it would have sounded. He looked just like the statue, and even if he didn't he stuck out like a sore thumb. He had been weary about him even coming here in the first place, but it wasn't like he could have stopped him.
"Why yes, yes I am," Typhon said smirking.
She beamed in excitement. "Oh wow, this is… my mama always told me the stories, but I never actually thought…" She suddenly reached into the basket she was carrying on her back and then held out something towards him. "Here you go. My family had been in the business for as long as I can remember, and the story is we were always supposed to give you one of these."
"Seriously…?" Astro asked.
"YES!" Typhon cheered as he took the wheel of cheese from her. He quickly took a bite out of it, and then hummed in pleasure. "It's like stepping right into the past. Good god this was always the best. I think it taste even better than I remember actually. Still familiar but… better. Bless you and yours little one."
Astro shook his head. "You have got to be kidding me. I thought you were just messing around about the-" Typhon suddenly shoved a piece of cheese in Astro's mouth, and the young titan went wide eyed when he tasted it. "...okay, I see why you were willing to fight Ares over this."
"I'm so happy you like it! We've tried to make as little changes to the recipe as possible," she said, oddly calm about meeting the supposed King of Monsters. "I have to ask, will you be attending the festival next week? I'm sure everyone would be honored to have you there."
"The festival?" Typhon asked.
She nodded. "Oh yes. It's in your memory. Celebrating the day you saved us from the wrath of the gods. Please say you'll come. It would just leave everyone in awe."
"You have a festival... unbelievable…" Astro said, sounding exhausted by this whole thing. That still didn't stop him from taking another bite of cheese though.
Typhon just smiled. "Bitchin'. When is it?"
A/N: A few people requested some adventures of Typhon and the Ten in the past, and one in particular asked to see his showdown with Zeus. Since I might save that one for the God Arc I figured I could do Ares instead. (Again, if you were planning on doing Ares or an Ares kid in the contest take this with a grain of salt. I can easily change some stuff up if it clashes with anyone I want to add in. But I tried to be vague about it). I'm liking the idea of showing some old adventures with the Ten, so I might keep that up.
Typhon was really always trying to get up to some trouble in his younger days. If it pissed off the gods he was probably down for it. Getting worshiped and given free cheese is just a bonus for him lol.
I also have a spicy Kenny/Black Vipers fic coming, so keep an eye out for that...
