"Did you feel that?"
"Yeah…"
Dorado and Lars both narrowed their eyes as they looked up in the air. There were dark clouds beginning to gather up above, and they were picking up something massive coming their way. They had recognized the aura that was headed their way. They had sensed it enough times from Dai Tai, their aunt Nia, and their cousins.
There was a god coming this way.
The only reason either of them could think of a god coming here was to deliver a message, in which case their aunt or cousin would have delivered it themselves, or they were coming to hunt down a titan. Despite the agreement made between their father and aunt, there were still some gods that would go to other dimensions and tried to hunt down titans for sport.
Though it was rare they ever came to mewni, it still happened. For some, hunting down the friend or family of the king of titans was too rich a prize to ignore. More often than not they were snuffed out by their father, grandfather, cousin or great-uncle. But their father and grandfather were in Tartarus. Their cousin Kitsune was visiting earth with his wife, and it would take a little time for their uncle to get here.
Which meant they'd have to hold down the fort until then.
"Get ready," Dorado said, grabbing Frostburn.
Lacerta smirked. "You know, if I take this guy out do you think I'll get a nickname like godslayer or something?" he asked.
A bolt of lightning fell from the sky, crashing down in front of them and blowing them back a few feet. They both braced themselves, feeling the electricity crackle through the air. They would tell whoever this was powerful. A blur rushed out of the smoke and right towards them, so quickly that neither of them had time to react.
They were both grabbed by the figure, who squeezed them so tightly they both thought they would be crushed. "Ah! Young Dorado and Lacerta! Tis been far too long since I have last seen you! How much you have grown in such a short time! It's truly astounding how time affects gods and titans so differently!"
Dorado and Lacerta both looked confused. They shared a glance, and then turned towards the redheaded stranger who was holding them in a deathgrip. "Who the hell are you?!" Lacerta said, trying to push himself free. What the hell was with this guy? How could he be so strong?
"Ah, forgive me. You were so young when I last saw you it's hardly surprising that you don't remember," he said, setting them down. They looked at him wearily. He didn't seem hostile, but they still didn't know what he was here for.
"Thor?"
The three of them turned around and saw Maria approaching. Thor smiled as he opened his arms and walked towards her. "Maria! How wonderful it is to lay eyes on you once more! You look healthy and lovely in equal measure!" he said.
Right before he hugged her, Maria held a hand up. "Whoa there. I'm happy to see you too Thor, but remember, I'm no god or mortal. So…?"
Thor chuckled nervously. "Ah, forgive me. When excited I do tend to forget my own strength," he said before giving her a hug, one that was far more gentle than the one he gave Dorado and Lacerta.
Dorado and Lacerta watched the two, only really picking up on one thing. Their mother had called him Thor. The god of thunder, and the newest leader of the Norse pantheon. Their father had talked about him before. He was one of the few gods that he trusted, and they had apparently fought side by side quite a few times.
"So that's Thor?" Dorado asked. Well, his father hadn't been exaggerating about how powerful he was. When he had been 'hugging' them just now Dorado couldn't even put up a decent struggle. He glanced down at the hammer he was carrying at his waist. "So then that must be…"
Lacerta wasn't focused on the weapon however. He just kept his eyes on Thor. So this was the one who was in charge of Asgard or whatever. The place that Bergljot came from. "He doesn't look so tough," he muttered.
"He just manhandled us like we were children…"
Thor stood up and looked around. "I can scarcely remember the last time I was able to lay eyes on Asterossa's homeland. He had once told me he had planned to make this a safe haven for titans, and it seems he had done just that," he said. He was able to pick up on quite a few powerful pressences he could only assume were titans.
"Well, he's always keeping an eye out for any titans or monsters who need help. In ours and other dimensions," Maria said. "By the way, happy as I am to see you, I'm afraid Astro isn't here right now. He's with Typhon in Tartarus."
Thor hummed. "I see. Well, tis sad I will not be able to see him, but I am actually here to see young Bergljot. It has been some time since I've been able to check on her, and I would see how she fares."
The Queen nodded back towards him. "Of course. I think she's inside. She was working on her weapon I think," she said. "Although, I'm willing to bet she's on her way here now seeing as she probably sensed you-"
"Thor."
"Ah, there she is."
Bergljot made her way towards them, her eyes locked onto Thor. She stood in front of him and then bowed her head. "Sir, it's an honor to see you again. What brings you here to-" She was cut off when Thor wrapped his arms around her, lifting her off of the ground. Bergljot looked surprised at the sudden contact, as did Lacerts and Dorado.
Bergljot was not a person whose personal space you got in. Not unless you were planning on fighting her. But Thor didn't seem at all concerned. "Ah! Young Bergljot, tis good to see you! You look strong! I assume you have been both eating and training properly?" he asked happily.
He set her back down, and instead of punching him in the head like Lacerta and Dorado thought she would, she cleared her throat and just nodded. "Yes sir. I've been doing everything you taught me, and doing my best to be of service to King Astro while I'm here," she explained.
Thor let out a boisterous laugh and then patted her on the head. "Good. Good. I am full glad to hear it. Astro had mentioned that a number of the vile creatures from Tartarus had slipped through the boundary, and with the rest of the enemies in his homeland who would rise against him, I knew there was little worry of your blade not being put to use," he said.
Bergljot looked down and blushed slightly. Maria looked amused, and Lars and Dorado once again were surprised to see her look so… well, they didn't know what expression for sure, but it was weird. Bergljot opened her mouth to speak, but suddenly another hand landed on her head. Lacerta smirked as he ruffled her head.
"Ah, ain't that sweet! He's worried about you," he teased before turning towards Thor. "I don't blame you of course. I mean, anybody could get left behind and not get in on any action when they're running with me. But she manages to keep up just barely. I slow down enough to-"
Bergljot suddenly swung her fist, hitting him in his side and cutting him off. "I'm not the one barely keeping up, you jackass!" she snapped angrily. "And don't ruffle my hair!"
Lacerta scowled. "He did it!"
"That's different!"
Lacerta and Bergljot both glared at each other as Maria sighed. Dorado pinched the bridge of his nose, and Thor let out another chuckle. "Ah, yes. Astro did mention that you were fighting alongside one of his eldest sons and his comrades. Given your abilities and strength, I assume you and Lacerta might quit the team," he said.
Bergljot narrowed her eyes. "They're not useless…"
That was the closest Dorado had ever heard her come to a compliment, so it had to mean something, right? Thor nodded and then patted both her and Lars on the shoulder. "There are few bonds that are forged as strongly as on the battlefield. An alley you can trust to stand at your side during the thick of things is more valuable than any magic or weapon," he advised.
Bergljot nodded, while Lars just let out a grunt. His eyes fell to the weapon hanging at his side, and then he smirked. "So, that's the famous hammer huh?" he asked. "My old man said only someone who's worthy can wield it… can I have it?"
"Lacerta, no!" Maria said sternly.
"C'mon ma! I just wanna see if I can!"
Thor smiled as he reached down and picked the hammer up. "Nay Maria, he is more than welcome to try. If he truly be worthy to wield it, I would know. After all, your father was able to lift it when he was your age. Twas what proved to me that he was a worthy alley," he said, holding it out towards him.
Lacerta chuckled as he reached out to take the weapon. If his old man could do it, then he could do it too. And it was just some weapon made for a god. He was a titan. He could handle it. He grabbed the handle, and the moment Thor let go… it dropped right to the ground. Lacerta was stunned for a moment, but then he gripped it tightly and planted his feet, trying to lift it back up.
He grit his teeth as he put his all into it, but it didn't even budge. Bergljot smirked towards him. "What's wrong, too weak?" she asked.
"Shut up!" he snapped angrily. "What the hell is up with this thing?! What kind of magic did you put on it?!" he asked, looking towards Thor.
Thor shook his head. "The magic is not my own. Mjolnir will only be wielded by those it deems worthy. Tis not a matter of strength, but of character," he explained. "But do not be discouraged. You are young, inexperienced. You still have much to learn and grow from. There was a time when I even needed assistance to wield it."
Dorado walked over towards them, looking down at the weapon curiously. "May I?" he asked, looking towards Thor.
"Of course!"
Dorado reached down and grabbed the weapon, but just like with Lacerta, it didn't even budge. He tried a little harder, but then decided to just stop. If Lars couldn't lift it with brute strength, then there was little chance he could either. It was as Thor said it seemed. This was a matter of character.
Which meant he still needed to work on his…
Thor patted his shoulder. "As I told your brother, young one, tis nothing to feel discouraged by. Some of the most noble and pure of heart are yet still unable to lift Mjolnir. My weapon has always been rather picky with who is allowed to wield it," he said before reaching down and picking his weapon up. "There is still hope that you will develop those qualities in the future however."
Dorado nodded, trying not to take the weapon's pickiness too personally. Lacerta just huffed. Dumb hammer. The thunder god turned back around towards Bergljot. "And now, on the subject of my possessions, I wish to bestow a gift upon my ward," he said before pulling something from under his cloak. "Astro had spoken very highly of your deeds to both I and my father, and I have told all who would listen of your exploits. As a result, we have decided to reward your efforts with this."
Thor pulled out a belt, one that looked rather ordinary to everyone else's eyes. It was made of what looked like very worn out leather, save for the buckle which was gold. Bergljot however went wide eyed when she saw it. "Megingjoro…" she muttered. She knelt down on one knee, lowering her head. "I'm not worthy of such a gift."
"It's just a shitty old belt…" Lars said bluntly.
Maria reached up and slapped him in the back of the head. Lacerta scowled. Not because it hurt, but because he knew she was going to nag him out for it later. But he was right. There wasn't anything special about it. No powerful magic coming off of it. What good was a tattered old belt?
Thor laughed. "Looks can be quite deceiving, little one. Though it may appear to be a simple belt, Megingjoro is quite special. In my youth, before I attained my full strength, I relied on this quite often. Whomever wears Megingjoro will be gifted with double the strength they normally would," he explained.
"Wait, are you serious?!" Lars asked. No wonder he was able to manhandle him and Dorado like that. He was cheating! "No freaking way!"
Dorado looked concerned. "That's… a little dangerous to give away, isn't it? Not that I don't trust Bergljot of course, but if any enemies of your pantheon were to learn that you no longer had it, would they not try and take advantage?" he asked.
Thor waved his hand. "I have dawned Megingjoro for so long that its effects stay with me even when we are parted. It can no longer grant me anymore strength that I myself don't already possess. Tis a waste to stay in my position, and because of that I have chosen to gift it to Bergljot. I have placed a restriction on it of course. The use of the belt shall be limited so as not to tempt you to use it outside of combat. But it should last long enough to finish any fight," he assured.
Bergljot looked hesitant. "But… I don't deserve this."
Thor shook his head. "You do. Though Asterossa and I are brothers through battle, our people and the titans remain hesitant. But your work here has done much to ease things. Tales of one of our own fighting alongside titans to slay creatures of the boundary have fostered the small embers of hope. There are even talks of having you and your comrades come to Asgard so that we could see you in action ourselves."
Lacerta snorted. Did he expect him to travel to his home turf just to put on a show for him and his buddies? Then again, it would be nice to be able to show the gods just how much stronger they were. "That aside, it is time I pass on my possessions to the next generation, as my own father did for me and mine. Magni shall receive the Mjolnir, and Modi shall inherit Jarngreipr," Thor said.
"Then shouldn't Megingjoro go to Thrud?" Bergljot asked.
"My daughter has no need for any of my possessions. Her strength alone is more than enough to topple any foe she may face. But to honor her she will be given Grioarvolr. She may use it as it is, or forge it into a weapon of her own," Thor said. He took the belt and then put it around Bergljot's waist before she could argue. "I have already decided on this Bergljot. I believe Megingjoro's place is with you. Do not dishonor this oaf by refusing to accept it."
Bergljot frowned. When he put it like that, she really couldn't refuse. She bowed her head once more. "You honor me. I will make you proud," she said.
"You already have. And I have little doubt you will continue to do so. Keep this up, and our people will see who you truly are. Your place among us will be without question," he said, patting her on the head again.
Maria smiled at the sight, and then spoke up. "Thor, I know you may be busy, but if you'd like to stay for dinner we'd be more than welcomed to have you. I'm whipping up a traditional Waterfolk stew. I know it may not be what you're used to on Asgard but…"
Thor slammed his fist together. "It would be an honor to dine with you and yours! Besides, I wish to see the rest of your kin! I've still yet to lay eyes on the little whale and the water bearer!" he cheered.
"Oh, right. You never did get to see Aqua or Cetus… boy will Aqua be happy to meet you. I'll tell the staff to set an extra place at the table."
As they made their way inside, the three teens stayed behind a bit. Bergljot was looking down at her belt. This was one of the three most valuable possessions that Thor had. Even if he had outgrown the use for it, it was still considered one of the most sacred treasures in the Norse pantheons. In ALL the pantheons. That he would bestow it upon her was just… shocking.
"You know just because you're wearing that shitty belt doesn't mean you can beat me, right?" Lacerta asked.
She narrowed her eyes at him. "I didn't need it to beat you before. So I'm certainly not going to waste it on you now. This will only be used for emergencies," she said.
"I think that's a good call," Dorado said. That much power was tempting for somebody their age. There was a reason Thor put a limit on it after all.
Bergljot began heading inside, and Dorado and Lacerta followed after her. "Hey, did you hear what the big oaf said," Lacerta muttered. Dorado looked at him curiously. "About her finding her place and all that shit. What was that about?"
"Well… I assume she meant that she'd be able to go back to Asgard," Dorado answered. "After all, she isn't going to stay here forever."
Lacerta grunted. "Yeah, guess you're right." His old man had told them her staying here would be a temporary thing. So she was going to leave eventually… but, even though Bergljot hadn't really been here that long, the idea of her not being around anymore felt strange to him. He'd gotten used to dealing with her bullshit, and it just being absent now would be odd.
"Are you okay?" Dorado asked, seeing how deep in thought his brother was.
"I'm fine. Let's just go to dinner. I'm hungry… and I'm gonna lift that goddamn hammer before he leaves. I swear it."
"I don't think anybody is going to be lifting that hammer anytime soon."
"What the…?"
"Oh my."
"Bullshit!"
"HaHaHa! Impressive little one!"
Sagitta smiled as she raised Mjolnir up into the air, a spark of lightning coming off of it. "Ha! Suck it Lars! I told you I could do it! Kneel before the new thunder goddess!" she mocked before pointing it at him.
"That is bullshit!" Lars said, getting up to take it from her. The moment she let go it dropped back to the ground. "Gah! What the hell?! No freaking way! You're telling me she's more worthy than I am?!"
Thor, who was carrying Cetus on his shoulder, shrugged. "Tis not I who decides who is worthy and who is not. Mjolnir itself is the judge," he said.
"Well it judged wrong! How can- Gah!"
Lars winced and grabbed his knee as Sagitta hit him in the leg with Mjolnir. "Show respect to the thunder queen!" she said, pointing it at him.
"If you think because you have that damn hammer that I can't kick your ass you got another thing coming!"
Dorado just looked confused. Sagitta could lift it, but… he couldn't? Not that he didn't think his sister didn't have strong character, but… "What does this mean?"
"It means she's more worthy than you," Aqua said casually.
Amber looked at the chaos going on in the dining room concerned. She was very happy for her daughter, but also worried for her son. Sagitta looked like she was dangerously close to throwing that hammer at her brother, and Thor was just looking at the whole thing amused. Like he was just intrigued that someone had managed to lift it. "Should we do something?"
Maria held her hand up. "Give it a few more minutes. Sagitta and Lars both need this I think…" she said, watching closely.
"Ah! Damn it!"
"All hail the thunder queen!"
A/N: Fic of Thor visiting mewni! He's going to be playing a part in the God arc, and the future AU too! He's one of the few gods that Astro can say he's friends with. He even gets 'brother' status like Micah and Junji. This also gives a little depth into his and Bergljot's relationship. She's his ward, but he sees her as a daughter/little sister figure too. There'll be more little tid bits and glimpses of her backstory in other one-shots and in the future AU arc (whenever I get around to that).
And as for Thor's gift, for those who don't know Thor's hammer was one of three very important possessions to him. There was Mjolnir, his hammer, which was obviously his main weapon. But there was also Megingjoro, a belt which was said to double his godly strength, and Jarngreipr, the iron gloves that helped him control the immense power of Mjolnir. I thought it would be interesting to include them and put a little spin on each of them too. I also named dropped Thor's children, who I'm coming up with ideas for in the future AU arc.
Hope you guys enjoyed!
