Hey, guys!
Hope y'all enjoy Part Three!
Part Three: Hypocrisy
Clark shut the door behind him with a little more force than he would normally allow himself to.
He couldn't believe Jon. He couldn't believe what that boy had done.
Clark was tempted to call him downstairs right now and ask him what the hell he had been thinking, but he also knew that Jon probably wouldn't answer him. Just like he wouldn't tell him who the drug dealer was.
Clark walked into his and Lois's shared office space and sat down at one of the chairs.
He didn't know what to do with Jon. He didn't know what had changed either. They had been so close, and now Jon was taking drugs and being defiant.
He reached over and grabbed one of the books he had been reading, but he couldn't focus on it. His mind continued to stay on Jon.
He felt like he had tried everything. Years ago, he and Lois had decided that they wouldn't physically discipline their kids. Even if Clark knew how to control his strength, it wasn't a risk that either of them were willing to take.
The grounding hadn't done anything. They had taken away everything they could. He would only be leaving the house for work. That didn't seem to have worked either.
What was he doing wrong? Hadn't he taught the kid better than this? First drugs, then lying and disobedience.
Maybe he hadn't been strict enough with Jon. Maybe Jon was like this because he had been too soft. He wasn't like this, and Lois wasn't like this either.
Maybe he needed to be more military style with Jon. Jon needed firm boundaries and to be swiftly punished if he pushed them at all. He would punish the slightest tone of defiance or the smallest roll of an eye. He was Superman, he would be able to catch that.
Though maybe it was a different problem.
Clark knew that Jon was still hiding who the drug dealer was. Who's to say that he wasn't hiding more drugs or other illegal items somewhere?
He remembered one time Lois told him that her father had taken her bedroom door away. Maybe Jon needed something like that.
But then again, drugs were small. He would need his clothes, bag, and room checked every day. He would retract his promise about not listening in on Jon. He could have his privacy back when he gained back their trust and proved that he had learned his lesson.
But he would have to talk to Lois about all of this before he made any sort of decision. He knew that they needed to be on the same page with all of this.
He sighed, then looked back at his book. He hadn't made any progress on it, and he doubted he would. Not today at least…
He was still trying to read when there was a knock on the door.
After a second, the door opened slightly and Jordan peered in through the crack.
Clark smiled at his son. It was hard not to smile at Jordan. "Hey," he greeted. His voice felt too loud in the silence of the home.
"Can I come in?" Jordan asked.
Clark nodded. "Of course," he told him. "C'mon in."
Jordan nodded back, then walked inside of the room. His movements were slow, cautious. There was something wrong.
"What's up?" Clark asked.
"We need to talk about Jon."
Clark frowned and crossed his arms. He closed the book that he had been reading.
This had happened when they were younger. One of the twins would get in trouble and the other one would try to bail them out. Normally it was Jon trying to get Jordan out of trouble, but it had gone the other way more than once. He thought the boys had grown out of this though.
"You're not going to be able to talk me out of punishing him, Jordan," Clark told him.
He would need to have a conversation with Jon after this. Jon knew that this sort of thing stressed Jordan out, and it wasn't fair for him to put his brother in this sort of situation.
Jordan shook his head. "That's not what I wanted to talk about," he said.
Clark placed the book back on the coffee table and looked at his son. "What is it then?" He asked. He kept his voice gentle and calm. He didn't want to freak out Jordan, after all.
"He told me about what happened in the barn," Jordan said.
"What about it?" Clark asked.
Jordan looked up at him. "That he got hurt," he said. "And now there's these marks on his arm."
Clark's heart thudded loudly in his chest. The bale of hay had hurt him that much? Had it really been that heavy?
"I shouldn't have made him carry that hay," Clark said. "I didn't realize it would hurt him that badly."
Jordan shook his head. "Not the stupid hay," he said, his voice edging towards a shout. The sound rang in Clark's ears. "From you!"
The world stopped around Clark and he felt like he could hardly breathe.
He had hurt Jon?
Clark took a deep breath, but it didn't calm down the quickly forming pit in his stomach.
Clark took another deep breath. "Jordan, what are you talking about?" He asked.
Jordan's eyes narrowed into a glare. "You know what you did," he hissed. "You used your powers on Jon. You hurt him."
Clark suddenly felt his stomach twist. Not even Kryptonite hurt that badly. He remembered grabbing Jon's arm. He remembered pulling Jon close to him and telling him to obey. He remembered thinking that Jon was about to cry. But mostly, he remembered not even regretting grabbing his son. Thinking that he deserved it.
How could he?
For months he had been practically preaching to Jordan about how important it was to control his powers, especially his strength, around humans. Yet he had hurt Jon by doing exactly what he had told Jordan was something that should never be done.
He felt sick for the first time in ages.
Jordan swallowed again, and Clark could hear that his heartbeat was speeding up. Clark couldn't tell if the situation was scaring Jordan or if he was.
He needed to see Jon. He needed to make sure that he was okay.
He left the room and started towards the staircase. He could feel his heart beating faster. He had hurt Jon…
Right when he reached the stairs, a rush of air filled the room and Jordan filled the space between Clark and the first step.
There was a look of determination in Jordan's eyes. One Clark had never seen before.
"Jordan, get out of the way," Clark warned, but Jordan only stood taller and set his jaw.
"Or what?" Jordan challenged. "Gonna hurt me too?"
Clark sucked in a breath. Jordan's words hit him harder than any punch ever could.
"You think you're so high and mighty that you can just hurt your kid," Jordan snapped. "Just because you're Superman doesn't give you the right to use your powers on Jon!"
Before Clark could say anything, Jordan continued.
"We trusted you! We were never scared of you because we didn't have a reason to be!" He shouted. There were tears starting to form in his eyes. "And now you've hurt my brother!"
"I didn't mean to hurt Jon," Clark said, but the words came out quieter than he had meant. He sounded less like an adult and more like a scolded child.
Jordan's brow furrowed for a second. "What?"
Clark swallowed. "I didn't realize that I had…" He admitted.
There was something terrifying about admitting that. He hadn't realized that he had hurt Jon until Jordan had spoken up about it. After decades of controlling his strength around humans, he had lost it around the one person who meant the most to him and he hadn't even realized until it was too late.
"I was just trying to stop him from getting more hurt," Clark explained. "I didn't mean to hurt him more in the process."
Jordan studied Clark critically for a moment, but didn't say anything. He didn't move either.
Jordan's eyes flashed with sadness for only a second. "I didn't mean to break his hand…"
Clark found himself wanting to hug Jordan, but he didn't. He knew that Jordan would carry that guilt with him for the rest of his life. The same guilt that Clark was feeling right now.
Clark sighed. "Jordan, you know I would never hurt your brother on purpose," he said. "I would never hurt either of you on purpose."
The anger flared in Jordan's eyes again. "You spent so long lecturing me about how what I did was wrong and now you've hurt my brother…" Jordan said as he continued to stand his ground. "What about our powers coming with responsibility? What about keeping our anger in check so people can trust us? What about never using our powers to hurt others?"
Clark felt his throat tighten. He remembered the day he told this to Jordan. He remembered how disappointed he had been in what had happened. Though now, mixed in with the blinding guilt and worry, he couldn't help but feel a little bit proud of the man his son was becoming.
A moment of silence lapsed between them. One of those silences that always come after a lecture. Clark just hadn't expected to be on the receiving side.
"Can I go check on him?" Clark asked. He tried to keep his voice gentle and calm, although all of the anger and annoyance had left him a while ago. All that was left was the burning guilt and shame.
Jordan hesitated for only a moment, then stepped away from the staircase. His big blue eyes told a million words though. The trust that was once there was gone, and his eyes still shone with a hint of the same determination that had been there when he had first blocked Clark's path.
Clark took one last look at Jordan, then inhaled a shaky breath before walking up the stairs. He knew that this had to be more than just making sure Jon wasn't injured. He needed to apologize for what he had done as well. He had lost the control that he had always promised his family that he would have around them.
Clark reached the top of the stairs and tried to collect his thoughts as he stepped towards Jon's room.
Then he reached out and knocked on the door.
Jordan stood up for his brother and knocked some sense into Clark! I hope you enjoyed! Please follow, fave, and review! I would love to know what you thought!
