. . . - flashbacks/ what if's?

Author's Note: Yes, I skipped the monkey episode. I'm sorry for those who like it and were probably expecting me to do it, I just felt that it wasn't necessary for my story. Sorry...

But anyways, hope you enjoy this one!

(Fixed the mistake with Jaden activating a trap while Jinzo is on the field... oops. If you read it already only how the duel ends is different!)

It was late in the evening, a boy with glasses and a blue blazer was frantically running through the forest. He was crashing through branches and bushes, not caring if his blazer got torn, all that mattered was getting away from it. Tripping on a root, he fell hard on the ground, a far sinister laughter echoing behind him. He quickly got up and took off once more.

"Someone please help me!" The boy screamed, but knew no one was going to hear him.

The island was empty, most students had gone home for the holidays. He was on his own, him and that thing that took his two friends. He kept running forward, refusing to look back as the laughter was getting closer and closer.

Snow was slowly falling from the sky, coating the island in a cold white sheet. It was winter break and almost all of the students had gone home for the holidays, but Erina and Jaden weren't one of them, they had decided to stay on the island.

We find the duo in the Slifer dorm cafeteria, both of them dueling each other, while Professor Banner was watching them with great interest as he was boiling some tea.

"I can't believe Syrus and Chumley went home…" Jaden sighed as he collected his cards, readying up for another round.

"Yeah, it would've been a lot more fun if they stayed." Erina nodded as she shuffled Jaden's deck, while he shuffled hers.

"Well, I'd say it's their loss." Banner said as he sat down and placed a cup of tea for the two teens. "Winter vacation here is very fun. Did I mention there is going to be a Christmas festival?"

"Really?!" Both of them gasped.

Banner nodded with a smile. "Yes, and it's quite something. There's an ice skating rink, food and drink stalls, beautiful light shows and all kinds of other Christmas themed things. I just can't name them all!"

"We're going right?" Erina asked, giving him her best puppy eyes. "It probably won't be like the one back home, but still!"

"Of course we're going!" Jaden grinned. "We can bring Alexis with us, right? We'd be bad friends if we left her by herself on Christmas."

"Of course we're bringing her. Why'd you even ask?" She replied, but then an amazing idea came to mind. 'I'm a genius!' She thought as a sly grin spread across her lips.

"What are you grinning about?" Jaden wearily asked.

"Nothing…" She dismissed innocently.

Jaden stared at her for a few moments before sighing. "If you say so." He took his deck and both of them drew their starting hands. "Alright, I'll go first thi-"

Jaden got interrupted by someone crashing through the cafeteria doors. Jaden and Erina ran up to help him. It was the boy who'd been running through the forest. "Hey, you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost." Erina asked him when she saw the terrified look on his face.

"I… I have." He shaklily replied.

Both teens shared a look with each other before Jaden looked at the boy with glasses with a raised eyebrow. "What are you talking about?"

"Jinzo, the Duel Monsters card…"

"I recognize you." Banner said as he came up to them. "Your name is Torrey, you were in my Para-Dueling class."

Torrey stumbled towards Professor Banner and grabbed him by the shoulders. "Professor Banner! You were right, everything you said was true! Duel Spirits are real, it's all true!"

Banner's brows furrowed in worry as he heard that. "Please, calm down, Torrey. Tell me everything that happened."

Torrey took a deep breath. "Well, you see, Professor, I told some of my friends about your class and how Duel Spirits can come to life under certain circumstances. So, we tried recreating those circumstances…" Jaden frowned, he hoped this wasn't going where he thought it was. "We tried a couple of times, but nothing happened. Then we got our hands on this Ouija board, so we did the chant and the board spelled 'Give me three and I will be free', we thought he meant cards, but he didn't!"

Jaden groaned after hearing this. He knew how the rest went and couldn't believe the stupidity of Torrey and his friends.

Banner looked horrified. "Oh dear me, no! Jinzo's appetite could never be satisfied by mere cards! This is just awful."

"You guys couldn't have tried to summon a Petit Angel or something innocent like that?" Erina sighed. "Let me guess, he meant souls, right?"

Torrey nodded as he stared at the ground. "That's right… unfortunately we had agreed before we knew it…" He shook his head. "I tried looking for my friends, but it was like they vanished into thin air and now Jinzo is after me."

Banner went to comfort Torrey, while Erina and Jaden went to the side so they couldn't hear them. "What can we do, Jay?" The bluenette whispered.

Jaden thought about it for a few moments. "Well, we need to find Jinzo so we can get his friends back. And Torrey has to stay close to us, because if Jinzo gets him and passes over completely, things will be bad. A Duel Spirit is a lot more powerful and scarier once they cross over." He explained and Erina nodded.

Just then the lights went out. "What was that?" Erina asked.

"Relax, kids, it was probably just a fuse." Banner tried to calm them down.

A mechanical laughter was heard. "Or… it was me!" Jaden and Erina turned around and saw Jinzo, holding an unconscious Torrey over his shoulder. Jinzo was an ugly Duel Spirit, he wore a long green coat with wide shoulder pads and a spiked collar, bracelets and belt. His face was deformed and veiny, but most of it was covered by a mask.

Banner was shaking in fear, while Jaden and Erina ran in front of him. "Let go of Torrey, Jinzo!" Jaden demanded.

Jinzo laughed. "I think not. We had a deal, this boy is mine." He turned around and began to run towards the forest.

Jaden and Erina were right behind him, they weren't about to let him absorb his third soul and pass over to their world. Both skidded to a stop, they lost track of him. Both of them were frantically looking around, trying to spot where Jinzo went, then suddenly Pharaoh ran in front of them ang hissed.

"He sensed Jinzo, Jaden." Yubel said as she appeared next to him. "You should follow him, an animal's senses are much sharper than a humans." Both teens nodded and ran after Pharaoh.

They arrived at what seemed to be a power plant. "Professor Banner, what is this place?" Jaden asked as Banner finally caught up to them.

"This is the central power station for the entire island." He revealed as he looked around. "But I don't see Jinzo anywhere."

Erina was looking around as well when her eyes fell upon Torrey. "There's Torrey! We gotta get him." They ran towards him, but a surge of electricity shot out of the power lines and hit the ground in front of them, knocking them back. "Professor Banner!" Erina yelled as she saw their teacher lying on the ground. She checked him and sighed in relief, he was just knocked unconscious.

"You won't be taking him anywhere." She heard Jinzo speak. She turned around and saw him standing in front of Jaden. "We had a deal and I'm collecting what's mine."

"Let him go, Jinzo! If you want a third sacrifice so badly, then take me!" Jaden said.

"What are you doing?!" Erina shouted.

Jinzo tilted his head to the side, examining Jaden. "Very well, I sense a dark power within you, mortal. I accept your offer, so now-"

Jaden held up his hand. "On one condition, you have to win a duel against me. If you win you get all my life force, but if I win you let Torrey and his friends go."

Jinzo chuckled. "A duel? Very well, I think I can keep this electric limbo going for a match. I will savor your soul when I consume it!"

"Sure you will." Jaden smiled as his Duel Disk came to life. "Get your game on, Jinzo!"

Jaden: 4000

Jinzo: 4000

Five cards appeared in front of Jinzo. "I'll be starting this off." A sixth card appeared in front of him. "I summon Malice Doll of Demise in attack mode!" A scary wooden doll with the appearance of a young boy wielding an axe appeared on the field. (ATK: 1600/ DEF: 1700)

Another card appeared on the field. "I play the spell card, Ectoplasmer! This spell card now allows us to sacrifice one monster on our fields during the end phase, when that happens the opponent takes half of that monster's attack points as damage." Jinzo explained. "I end my turn and sacrifice Malice Doll of Demise! Now half of his attack points get subtracted from your life points!" The doll collapsed as its soul came out of it and flew straight at Jaden, going right through him.

Jaden: 3200

"Jaden, your legs!" Erina shouted in worry.

He looked down and saw that his legs were transparent all the way to his knees. Jinzo laughed. "This is our Shadow Game, you lose life points and I gain your life essence!"

Jaden smirked, not worried even a little. "Too bad you won't be taking anything from me! I draw!" He placed the card he drew in his hand and grabbed another one. "I know what your game plan is, you're gonna keep reviving Malice Doll of Demise as fuel for Ectoplasmer! Well, I won't let you, Mystical Space Typhoon will take care of that!" A small tornado shot out of Jaden's card and destroyed Ectoplasmer.

"Next, I summon Elemental HERO Lady Heat!" A woman with bright orange hair appeared on the field. She wore a white and red spandex that resembled flames and a red and gold crown on her head. (ATK: 1300/ DEF: 1000)

"Alright, Lady Heat, let 'em have it!" The flame heroine made a lifting motion with her hands and a pillar of fire sprouted from under Jinzo.

Jinzo: 2700

Jaden inserted four cards in his Disk. "I set three cards and activate Mirage of Nightmares! During your Standby Phase, I draw cards until I hold four in my hand, but during my Standby Phase, I have to discard the same amount of cards I drew… And since I'm ending my turn, Lady Heat deals 200 points of damage for every Elemental HERO I control!" He added with a smirk. Lady Heat formed a fireball in her hand and threw it at Jinzo, hitting him straight in the gut.

Jinzo: 2500

"Impudent mortal!" Jinzo groaned out due to the damage he sustained. "You shall regret that…" His next card appeared in front of him. "Thanks to its effect, Malice Doll of Demise returns to my field during the Standby Phase." The creepy doll reappeared. (ATK: 1600/ DEF: 1700)

Jaden smirked. "You know what else happens during your Standby Phase? I get to draw four cards thanks to Mirage of Nightmares!" He revealed as he drew his cards. "And I won't be suffering from its drawback thanks to this!" His facedown flipped up. "Emergency Provisions allows me to gain 1000 life points for every trap and spell card I send to the Graveyard. And I send Mirage of Nightmares to the Graveyard!"

Jaden: 4200

'Nice one, Jay.' Erina smiled slightly, but then was startled when she felt her Duel Spirit suddenly appear behind her. "What's wrong, Fel?" The dragon just hummed in response. Erina could tell he was on edge for some reason which made her worry a bit.

"I summon Emissary of the Afterlife!" Jinzo said as a spectre that looked like the Grim Reaper appeared on the field. (ATK: 1600/ DEF: 600) "And with Heavy Storm, you'll be defenseless against my assault!" Jinzo laughed as a storm swept the field and destroyed Jaden's facedowns.

"Gee thanks!" Jaden grinned and held up the two cards that got destroyed. "You just destroyed my Hero Medal trap cards! When they are sent to the Graveyard by my opponent's card effects, I get to reshuffle them in my deck and draw one card from each." He explained as he shuffled the trap cards back in his deck and drew two cards.

Jinzo let out a raspy growl as he played his next card. "Next I'll be equipping Axe of Despair to Malice Doll of Demise, giving it 1000 extra attack points!" A fiendish looking axe replaced the basic one that the doll held. (ATK: 1600-2600)

"Time to feast on your life force!" Jinzo bellowed. "Malice Doll of Demise, destroy Lady Heat!" The doll laughed maniacally as it sliced Lady Heat clean in two.

Jaden: 2900

"Now, Emissary of the Afterlife will attack you directly!" The Reaper lookalike flew forward with its scythe pulled back. When it reached Jaden, it sliced him with the scythe, causing Jaden to scream in pain.

Jaden: 1300

"Yes… Yes!" Jinzo laughed. "Your life force tastes exquisite! I was right, you do possess a dark power."

"Now that… you got a better… taste." Jaden groaned out, recovering from the pain. His body was now transparent all the way up to his chest. "Did you get a clue as to who I am?"

Jinzo tilted his head slightly. "No and I do not care about your silly human hierar-" His breath got caught in his throat and he took a step back in shock as a shockwave collided with him.

Jaden stood there with a smirk on his face, his golden eyes glowing slightly in the dark as an aura of darkness expanded out of him. "See? You do know who I am!" He laughed.

"Th-the Supreme King?! H-how!?" Jinzo asked in a panicked voice. "Y-You've been dead for t-thousands of years!"

"I'm his reincarnation, not the one you know." Jaden shrugged. "So, Jinzo, I'm about to teach you a lesson on why you shouldn't have come here." Jinzo began to visibly panic. "Oh and don't try to run away, we're locked in a Shadow Game, remember? My Shadow Game, don't worry the penalty of losing is that you won't ever be able to come to this world again." He grinned as two shadow tendrils wrapped around Jinzo's feet.

"Damn show off." Erina sighed. 'Well he doesn't get to let loose often, so this is probably good for him…'

Jinzo clenched his fists in anger. "No! I will win, I'm in the lead! I set one facedown and end my turn!"

"My turn!" Jaden drew his seventh card. "I summon Elemental HERO Bubbleman in attack mode!" The blue clad water hero appeared on the field. (ATK: 800/ DEF: 1200) "And when he's the only monster on my field when I summon him, I get to draw two cards!" He drew his extra cards.

Jaden smirked as he was looking at his hand, a plan formulated in his head. He took two cards from his hand and held them up, revealing Polymerization and Burstinatrix. "Next up I'll fuse together Bubbleman and Burstinatrix to form Elemental HERO Steam Healer!" On the field appeared a man in bulky purple and red armor which had pipes that pumped steam on his back. (ATK: 1800/ DEF: 1000)

Jaden held up another card. "And with R - Righteous Justice, I'll take down your facedown! You see, this card allows me to destroy spell and trap cards equal to the amount of HEROES I have on the field!" He explained as Jinzo's facedown blew up.

"Of course a hero needs a city to protect." The field spell slot on Jaden's Disk popped open. "And with Skyscraper I'll give him just that!" Jaden inserted the spell in the field slot and it closed. Buildings began to rise from the ground and surround them with a giant skyscraper right behind Jaden.

"Hmm, what was the point of that?" Jinzo asked. "It didn't change anything."

"Oh, it did something." Jaden smirked. "And I'll show you! Steam Healer, attack Malice Doll of Demise!" The armored hero charged towards the toy doll.

"Fool! Malice Doll of Demise is stronger than your Steam Healer! Why would you attack it?" Jinzo argued.

"That's not exactly true." Jaden said. "Because thanks to Skyscraper your doll is going down! You see, when one of my Elemental HERO monsters attacks a monster with higher attack points than them, they gain 1000 extra attack points!" He revealed, making Jinzo gasp. (ATK: 1800-2800) Steam Healer stopped in front of the creepy doll and extended his arms, unleashing highly pressurized steam which destroyed the doll.

Jinzo: 2300

Jaden grinned. "And now for Steam Healer's effect! When he destroys a monster by battle and sends it to the Graveyard, I gain life points equal to that monster's original attack points!" A light blue aura surrounded Jaden as his life points were restored.

Jaden: 2900

"Ah… much better." Jaden sighed before grabbing and inserting a card in his Disk. "I throw down a facedown and call it a turn!"

"My turn!" A card appeared in front of Jinzo. "And what a card it is! With this I will drain you of all of your life force, Supreme King! I sacrifice my Emissary of the Afterlife to summon… Jinzo!" Jaden's eyes widened as Jinzo disappeared. A bolt of electricity struck the ground and Jinzo materialized on the field. (ATK: 2400/ DEF: 1500)

"You really summoned yourself?" Jaden asked with a deadpan expression.

"Indeed I did." Jinzo chuckled. "And now I can attack you personally! Beginning with Steam Healer! Cyber Energy Shock!" Jinzo unleashed a purple ball of electricity from his hand and destroyed Steam Healer.

Jaden: 2300

"I set one card and end my turn." A reversed card appeared behind him.

'Jaden is in quite the predicament now that he can't use his trap cards…' Erina thought in worry.

Jaden grit his teeth. "My turn! I draw!" He took a card from his hand and slapped it on his Disk. "I summon Elemental HERO Solid Soldier in defense mode!" On the field appeared a male hero in a dark red bodysuit and shiny silver armor that had teal colored gems on it. Alongside the armor, he had two shield-like vambraces strapped to his arms. (ATK: 1300/ DEF: 1100) Jaden grinned. "And he has a pretty sweet effect! When he's summoned to the field, I can summon a level four or lower HERO from my hand! So come on out, Elemental HERO Avian!" The feathered hero appeared on the field, kneeling. (ATK: 1000/ DEF: 1000)

Jaden then slipped a card into his Disk. "I end off with a facedown."

"You can defend all you want, but it won't save you!" Another card appeared behind Jinzo. "I play Card of Sanctity, now we both draw until we hold six cards!" Both players drew their cards. "Since you control more spell and trap cards than me, I summon the Psychic Megacyber!" A lightning bolt crashed on the field, revealing a gold plated humanoid machine. (ATK: 2200/ DEF: 1200)

"I play the spell card, Amplifier! With this equipped to myself, I'm no longer restricted by my own ability!" A strange device with needles appeared on Jinzo's head. "Next, I activate my trap card, Energy Drain! With this, I gain 200 attack and defense points for every card in your hand until the end of this turn and with six cards in your hand, I gain 1200 points!" Jinzo cackled maniacally as his power grew. (ATK: 2400-3600/ DEF: 1500-2700)

"And with Stop Defense, your Avian is going to attack mode!" Jaden gasped as Avian stood up. Jinzo laughed. "This is over, Supreme King! I am the victor and your life force is all mine! Cyber Energy Shock!" Jinzo yelled and fired a ball of purple electricity.

"Jaden!" Erina cried.

"Not happening!" Jaden's facedown flipped up. "With Concentrating Current, Avian gains attack points equal to his defense!" (ATK: 1000-2000) Jaden groaned in pain as Avian was destroyed by the blast.

Jaden: 700

"That was a close one…" Jaden sighed in relief, but jumped a bit when he heard Erina yell at him.

"Jaden, you idiot! You almost gave me a heart attack!"

"Sorry!" He sheepishly grinned at her before turning back to the duel.

Jinzo clenched his fists in anger. "A small delay… Megacyber, take down his monster!" The gold machine delivered an electrified punch to Solid Soldier's face, blowing him up. "I set two cards and end my turn." Jinzo's stats reverted back to normal. (ATK: 3600-2400/ DEF: 2700-1500)

"My turn!" Jaden drew his card and smirked. "Looks like I won this."

"W-What?!" Jinzo took a step back.

"I start with the Warrior Returning Alive! With this I bring back Burstinatrix to my hand!" Jaden took the card from his Graveyard. "Next up is Monster Reborn, bringing Avian back to the field!" The feathered hero reappeared on the field. (ATK: 1000/ DEF: 1000)

Jaden then held up a card. "And now with Polymerization, I fuse them together into my favorite hero! Come on out, Elemental HERO Flame Wingman!" Burstinatrix appeared next to Avian before they disappeared in the vortex.

Jinzo looked around frantically. "Where is your monster?" He asked to which Jaden just grinned and pointed up. He looked up and gasped, Flame Wingman was standing with his arms crossed on top of the skyscraper behind Jaden. (ATK: 2100/ DEF: 1200)

"This is over, Jinzo!" Jaden said as he showed his winning card. "With the spell card Skydive Scorcher I can destroy all monsters on your field with attack higher that Flame Wingman's!" He grinned. "And the real kicker is that since Skyscraper is on the field, you take damage equal to the combined attack of the monsters I destroy!" He explained before pointing straight at Jinzo. "Flame Wingman, do your thing! Skydive Scorcher!"

"NO!" Jinzo yelled. "I was so close to crossing over! If I can't do it, I'm taking you with me, Supreme King! Cyber Energy Shock!" Jinzo fired his blast straight at Jaden in hopes to take him down.

"Honestly..." A dark barrier deflected the blast. "I expected that you'd be above such pettiness, Jinzo?" Yubel said as she fully materialized next to Jaden.

"A spirit?" Jinzo gasped.

Yubel narrowed her eyes. "Yes, and one that's dealt with selfish spirits like you that want nothing else but to feast on souls and cause havoc. Also..." She then smirked. "If you try anything like that again, he wouldn't mind eating you." She pointed behind Jinzo.

He turned around to see Felgrand towering over him, glaring at him with his orange eyes. "This is it, Jinzo." Jaden said, bringing him back to the duel. "I banish you from whence you came!" Flame Wingman landed hard, creating a fiery explosion. Jinzo let out an agonizing scream as a blinding light covered the entire area around them.

The sun rose over the snow covered island, waking Jaden and Erina up. Erina went to check on Professor Banner, while Jaden looked over to where Torrey was and saw two more boys there, one was on the heavier side and the other on the shorter side.

"Good thing they're back." Erina said as she came over to Jaden. "I think this experience will teach them to not mess with Duel Spirits."

Jaden just chuckled. "Yeah… This was quite the holiday adventure, huh?"

Erina smiled at him. "Yeah, it was quite fun, although I wished I could join in on it."

"Next one's yours then." Jaden promised.

"Not like I was gonna ask you anyway." The bluenette said. "Also…" She then punched him in the chest, making Jaden wheeze out his air.

"What was that for?!"

She gave him a glare. "Don't. Antagonize. The Duel Spirits. Got it?!" She yelled. "What if Yubel didn't deflect the blast in time?"

"W-Well…" Jaden looked away in shame and guilt.

"Thought so…" Her hard look softened and sighed. "Just be careful next time, okay?"

"Okay." Jaden smiled and nodded.

"What are you kids being loud for so early?" Banner lazily said. "And why does my head hurt so much?"

"Professor, you're awake!" Erina said as she and Jaden helped him up. "Well, you got knocked out when Jinzo used the power plant to materialize."

"Yeah." Jaden nodded. "But don't worry, I dueled him and he freed Torrey and the others."

"I see…" Banner smiled. "Well in that case, I'm proud of you two… and hopefully this will dissuade those three from attempting anything like this again. Now, how about we get those three out of here before we freeze to death?" They nodded and each picked one of the boys up to carry them to the dorms.

I really wanted Jaden to do a shadow duel so I figured why not make him highjack Jinzo's and make it backfire.

Alright, you guys can probably figure out what's coming up next given that I wrote it at the beginning, so I'm just gonna say it. PREPARE FOR FLUFF! LOTS OF IT! That's what next chapter's gonna be so yeah! :D

See ya next time and I'll try not to take too long with it. (No promises) Stay safe!
