Jane woke to a dark room and the familiar shape of another person beside her in bed.
A mussed crop of dark hair poked out from beneath the comforter onto the pillow beside her. For a second she didn't know where she was.
Realisation hit her as she moved and felt an ache in her thighs.
The rookie.
Eva Sullivan had started at BPD in January after graduating. She was keen, sharp and had a great ass. Jane smirked to herself as she thought of that ass and her latest conquest. The kid would be way too big for her boots now that she had slept with a detective, and yet to Jane, she had just scratched an itch. She knew she shouldn't use people. It was against her upbringing and everything she had been taught. Yet she was sure she couldn't have what she really wanted and so she had to find her release elsewhere.
And it had been a sweet release. Little Officer Sullivan really knew how to use those hands. Jane smirked again as she remembered straddling the younger woman and her orgasm hitting her so hard that she had fallen forward and braced herself against her hands to avoid landing on top of Eva.
Moving quietly, Jane untangled herself from the unfamiliar sheets and fished her boots out from beneath the bed. She pulled on her clothes and slipped away silently into the night.
Maura lay awake. Crying had not beckoned sleep any closer and she was aware of the clock beside the bed blinking 03:30. The red LED numbers probably didn't help her circadian rythm. She would have to change it.
The glow of headlights on the street below her window made her brow furrow. They went out and a few moments later she heard a key turn in the lock of the door. Jane.
Jane tiptoed in to Maura's hallway, silently deposited her gun and badge in the lock box and slipped out of her boots. She didn't really know why she had come to Maura's Beacon Hill home instead of her own apartment. It wasn't any closer to Eva's apartment and yet she considered this her home. Her own apartment was more of a stopping point to get a fresh suit or new Red Sox shirt on a weekend. She tiptoed across the floor and into the guest bedroom where she turned on the shower and slipped under the hot stream of water and let the steam envelope her.
Maura heard the shower shut off. She lay still and listened for 15 minutes before sighing and giving in to herself. She climbed out of her own bed and made her way down the stairs to slip into the guest bed beside Jane. The detective was already snoring softly, with her damp hair splayed out over the pillow. Maura rolled on to the other side of the bed and fell into a quiet peaceful sleep beside her.
The alarm on Jane's phone woke both women with a start. Jane sat bolt upright and made a startled noise when she noticed Maura sleeping next to her. This was definitely not the person she remembered dozing off beside! The noise startled Maura into an upright position and she gathered the sheets around herself, despite being clothed in pyjamas.
"Maura?! What are you doing here?"
"Well I do live here, Jane!"
"Here! In the bed! With me?" Jane exclaimed. A tiny look of worry flashed through her eyes. She had most definitely slept with Eva, come back here, showered and fallen asleep completely alone. She most definitely hadn't slept with Maura. Wether she wished she had or not.
"Oh," Maura replied, her voice softening and a smile tugging at the corners of her lips "I hadn't slept and when you got here in the early hours I knew the feeling of sleeping beside someone I am close to would calm me."
Jane began to laugh softly. She reached out and pulled Maura into a side hug. Maura melted against her side and began to smile too.
"Did you fall to sleep when you came down here?"
"Mmhmm" Maura hummed. She stilled and revelled in the feeling of being tucked against Jane's body. Each time they hugged or touched, she savoured the moment and mentally catalogued it.
"What kept your big brain awake?" Jane asked.
"Just things I haven't been able to compartmentalise. I'll file them accordingly through the day." Maura replied and moved to get out of bed. "In the meantime, we will both be late for work if we don't get dressed. You also need to eat, so I'll make egg whites and kale."
"Mauraaaaa! I want fluff sandwiches!"
Maura laughed, relief washing over her. The knowing that no matter who Jane slept with that wasn't her, she still had her best friend with terrible eating habits, stompy boots and an even worse caffeine addiction.
