Maura exited the elevator into the Foyer and began to make her way toward the Division One Cafe. She had considered it carefully and settled on the opinion that today was an acceptable day to indulge in a sweet, sugary pastry. As she made her way toward the door, she recognised the back of Jane's new rookie. Her heart rate increased and a flush of annoyance rose up her chest. The young officer was sitting facing another new recruit, speaking animatedly in hushed tones. Against her better judgement, Maura slowed her pace and headed quietly toward them. She joined the back of the line at the counter and strained her hearing. Eavesdropping was incredibly uncharacteristic and exceptionally rude, and yet she felt she had no power over her actions.
"She called you Maura?!" Hissed the other new recruit. Eva nodded in response. "And you didn't kick her out of your bed?!"
"Dude!" Exclaimed Eva in an equally hushed whisper. "Put it this way, would you kick a detective out of your bed? Especially one as hot as Rizzoli."
"No, yes, I mean no. Damn! She said the Doc's name in bed?"
"I just ignored it! It's not exactly serious is it? You gotta do what you gotta do, right?" Eva said. The volume of her voice was almost imperceptible and Maura strained her hearing. The sense of disbelief that coursed through her was staggering and she swayed before catching her balance.
Jane had called her name while sleeping with someone else. She left her place in the queue and retreated to the solitude of her office as fast as possible without making her presence known to the two women.
Her head span as she sat at her desk and stared at the wall. A thousand thoughts and questions clouded her mind and so she pulled at the first one she could catch.
Jane had called her name when she was at a point of pure bliss. She must have been thinking of her as she was in bed with Eva, who was rapidly becoming insignificant to her thought process. Did Jane harbour the same feelings for her as she did for Jane? Clearly she did. Would it be appropriate to act on them based off an overheard conversation between two people she neither knew nor liked? She considered this carefully and came to the conclusion that she had to take the risk. If she didn't show Jane that she was deeply attracted to her, Jane would never act on her own attraction to Maura out of respect. Of that she was certain. She began to formulate a careful plan.
Jane heard the familiar click of Maura's heels on the floor of the corridor outside the bull pen. She clicked save on her work, closed up the paper file in front of her and began to stand.
"You keen to leave, Rizzoli?" Korsak asked.
"Yeah, Maura and I are getting Pizza. You know I love Pizza" she flashed him her famous Rizzoli grin. Korsak chuckled and waved her out of the room.
"Jane! I didn't expect you to be ready so soon. I was expecting to wait for you."
"Nope. I've been ready for hours. I'm starving." Jane involuntarily licked her lips as she looked at Maura. Her attraction to the Medical Examiner had only grown of late and yet she knew something had been rattling around in that big brain of hers for a few days.
