The first trimester of her pregnancy was anything but easy for Donna. She was bothered by constant nausea, dizziness and insomnia. But all of this could not diminish the anticipation of the baby in the least. Harvey and herself were about to become parents. A dream that neither of them had even dared to dream came true. And they both couldn't have been happier about it. Nevertheless, they had decided to spend New Year's Eve just the two of them, so that Donna could rest as much as possible and stay in her familiar surroundings - in case she wanted to go for a lie-down or needed to throw up yet again.
Fortunately, she didn't throw up, but she still needed a lot of rest after countless nights without much sleep. So after a late dinner, she lay on the couch while Harvey thankfully cleaned up the kitchen. As he eventually went to check on her he found her fast asleep in front of the fireplace.
It was nearing midnight, so he sat down next to her on the edge of the couch, gently running his fingers through her tousled hair and placing a soft kiss on her temple. Donna stirred and sighed under his touch before she looked at him with blinking eyes.
"Hey," he whispered. "It's almost 12. Shall we watch the fireworks from the balcony or would you rather go to bed?"
„Balcony," Donna muttered, a yawn preventing her from saying more.
So Harvey helped her up and led her to the balcony of his, or rather now their, condo.
He had prepared a cozy lounger full of blankets and pillows while she was sleeping and from where they could overlook almost the whole city.
He lovingly wrapped her in blankets before slipping onto the lounger behind her - half lying down and Donna between his outstretched legs, her head on his shoulder, his hands on her tiny baby bump. Candles were burning everywhere and a bottle of nonalcoholic champagne was placed on the small table next to them.
Harvey had become much more caring lately. He had been treating her very tenderly from the very beginning of their relationship and he had even developed his romantic side that Donna had never experienced from him before - nor he from himself. But since her pregnancy, he had become even softer, constantly concerned about the wellbeing of his wife and their unborn child.
Never before in her life had Donna felt as safe and secure as she did with him now. And for that, she gladly accepted all the negative effects of her pregnancy.
As the fireworks went off over the New York skyline, bathing the night sky in a sea of colors, she grabbed his hands on her belly and squeezed them tightly as she dug deeper into his embrace.
"Happy New Year, Donna," he whispered into her ear. "I can't wait for this year to start. I love you. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me. Thank you for everything. I love you so much."
Tears welled up in her eyes. She blamed it on her hormones, since it was by no means the first time she had heard those words from Harvey. And yet, right at this moment, she was even happier than ever before.
She turned her head to look deep into his eyes. "Happy New Year, Harvey. I can't believe that we're here. I love you so, so much."
For a split second, they just beamed at each other, their teary eyes full of love and devotion. And then their lips met in a fierce kiss that they only broke when there was absolutely no air left in their lungs.
