They gathered some friends and colleagues for a last BBQ on Harvey's condo's balcony before he and Donna would move to Seattle. A farewell evening with just their closest companions, to say goodbye and thank you for everything and see you soon all at the same time.
She's been watching him for a while. He looks relaxed. The sleeves of his white shirt rolled up casually, revealing his strong, tanned forearms. A pair of sunglasses sits on his face. He is standing at the grill, skilfully flipping over the food on the grid, and she can see his back muscles moving slightly under the shirt. His gaze seems to wander over the New York skyline bathed in soft evening sunlight. As she knows, his favorite view of all time.
She makes sure that their guests, scattered indoors and out, are taken care of before she approaches him to steal a moment for themselves. Her hand strokes gently over his back as she hums "Hello handsome".
"Hey," he greets her with this soft voice he only ever uses with her, still handling the tongs. "Everything alright in there?" he motions to the living room.
"Mhmh," she nods, caressing his biceps before resting her cheek there.
He turns to face her, his smile widening as he states "You look beautiful tonight."
"Thank you," she replies shyly, his arm coming to circle her waist, the tongs in his other hand.
He kisses her long and deep, taking advantage of being alone with her for a moment after a busy day full of errands and preparations.
When they eventually part, their foreheads come together and they just beam at each other, her fingers scratching the short hair on his neck.
"I can't wait for everyone to leave," he whispers seductively.
Donne giggles and squeezes his arm, preparing herself for a witty reply, but she gets interrupted by a slight coughing sound behind them.
"I must admit, I didn't think I'd ever get to see that." It's Jessica, and she grins widely at the two of them. She managed to be here tonight as she was already in town for some business. It's the first time she actually gets to see them together. "Though I could never really imagine you with anyone else, Harvey," she adds. "I'm really happy for you two."
"Thanks, Jessica," Harvey says proudly to his former mentor. "I know now that I couldn't see myself with anyone else, either." He strokes Donna's back and winks at her.
"May I abduct your wife for a little while?" Jessica asks.
"If you promise to leave her unharmed," he quips.
He looks after them as they go inside to set the table. Jessica seems to say something affectionate to Donna because she suddenly smiles broadly at her and pats her arm.
And as Harvey watches the two most important women of his life, he gets a little sentimental. Where would he be in his life if it weren't for these people?
He allows himself one last look at them before turning his attention back to the barbeque.
He realizes then that he really is where he was always supposed to be. And that he never wants to be anywhere else ever again.
