The sight that awaits him when he returns from the bathroom takes his breath away for a second. She's tangled under the sheets, barely any makeup left on her face, her fiery hair a total mess. She smiles lazily at him and he beams right back as he pads towards the bed.
It's the very first night that they are spending at his condo. And although by now he is finally, albeit slowly, getting used to the fact that all of this is real, that Donna and he really made it, her lying naked in his bed blows his mind all the same.
As right and natural as it may feel with her - this level of intimacy is still completely new to him. And a lot to process. But he definitely really likes the way she's making him feel.
He crawls onto the bed and hovers over her, his nose brushing hers as he places a kiss on the corner of her mouth.
"You comfortable?" he asks.
"Mhmm," she hums. "Very much."
"Good," he breathes as her hand comes up to softly scratch the back of his head.
Admittedly, he was a bit excited about tonight. After they'd spent the first couple of nights at her place, he longed more and more for the day he'd finally have her at his home for the first time. As his girlfriend. The moments they had at her place were, without a doubt, wonderful, and since they've been spending every single minute entangled with each other, buried inside each other or wrapped around each other anyway it didn't matter in the least where they were.
But still, this is important to him, and it almost felt monumental to finally take her to his home and let his dreams of a decade become reality. The need for her to feel as cozy and at ease at his place as she does at her own is all-consuming. He wants to make her feel special and precious, and if he's being completely honest he wants nothing less than to lay the world at her feet.
This is utterly new to him as well - he has never felt this devoted to a woman ever before. But with her, it's always been different. And not only does he finally know that, but he also gladly accepts it.
He closes his eyes for a moment to relish in her caresses, but the urge to look at her, to actually see her in front of him, prevails pretty quickly and he opens them again. He realized early on that at this short distance her eyes look even more beautiful, more radiant and more inviting. And he wants to be immersed in them forever.
Eventually, he leans in a little more and captures her lips with his, kissing her oh so tender and soft, before he pulls back once more. She cups his cheek to trace his moles with her thumb and her smile widens as if she can read all the thoughts and emotions on his face - and most likely she can.
"God, I really like that face," she states in a low tone.
"Yeah, it's pretty handsome, I know," he quips and she chuckles, his sweet cockiness never failing to make her stomach flutter a little.
"It is. But that's not what I mean."
"No?" he tilts his head and playfully furrows his brows. "What do you mean then?"
"Your after-sex-face," she grins. "It's different."
"It is?" he asks, frankly surprised, and she nods. "How?"
"It's softer. Less tense."
"I can see that," he states, referring to the kind of workout they had not long ago.
She giggles but doesn't elaborate and continues. "Then there's that tiny little smirk, but only in the left corner of your mouth," she runs a finger over the spot in question to emphasize her point.
"Okayyyy," he replies, once again taken aback by her sublime observational skills.
"And your eyes are a little smaller, but they still sparkle. Although it's no longer with lust and arousal. It's something else," she debates, having quite a hard time interpreting this new side of Harvey.
"Oh, I can tell you what it is," he beams, pecking her lips.
"Satisfaction?" she tries.
"That too," he winks. "But no."
"Then what?"
A heartbeat passes and he just stares at her, his voice all pure and warm when he speaks.
"Love."
Donna's eyes widen and she blinks in disbelief, completely stunned. It's not the first time he uses this word towards her, the memory of him saying love about you the other night still fresh on her mind. However, it still takes her fully by surprise.
Another heartbeat passes before he adds sincerely "I love you, Donna. So much."
And then he dives right back in, this time prolonging and deepening the kiss until they both run completely out of air and are forced to pull apart.
"I love you too, Harvey" she whispers, some unshed tears glistening in her eyes, making her hazel irises shine even brighter. And he swears it feels like paradise to hear those words from her for the very first time.
They wordlessly smile at each other for a while, before he snuggles into her side, pulling the sheets up over their bodies, and they automatically shift into their usual position where he spoons her. His arm is firm around her waist and he pulls her yet a little closer, determined to hold her like that all night.
"Good night," he whispers before placing a kiss directly beneath her earlobe.
"'night," she hums, threading her fingers with his.
He buries his nose into her hair and right before her enchanting scent lulls him to sleep he realizes that no matter what bed they are sleeping in, this is what really makes him feel at home.
