They are in the middle of the four-course menu of the night when she suddenly feels Harvey's hand on her thigh and the light squeeze he gives her.
It is the wedding of one of Harvey's fellow students from Harvard. A lavish feast at a large lakeside mansion a few hours' drive from New York City. One of the first big events they attend together as a couple.
Donna got really excited about the occasion beforehand, primarily because she would meet a bunch of Harvey's old friends and their respective partners with whom they were seated at the same table. However, not to anyone's surprise, she is getting along with everyone right away.
And she is really happy to see him enjoying the conversations with his former classmates to the fullest, sharing stories from their common past, toasting the good old days and updating each other about their lives.
Ever since they took their seats at the table, she herself has been engrossed in a frisky conversation with Michael to her left, who has just opened up to her that he has secretly had a huge crush on Harvey for years and couldn't believe that he is now even far more attractive than he was all those years ago.
"I will forever disapprove of him not being gay," Michael says with a wink, making both Donna and his husband next to him laugh out loud.
.
"So, how long is this going on?" the friend next to Harvey asks at the same time, gesturing between him and Donna.
"14 years," Harvey replies promptly without hesitation.
Alex just raises his eyebrows in disbelief, knowing all too well about Harvey's bachelor lifestyle. Even though they only see each other every few years, he is well aware that little has changed in that regard since graduation. So this relationship must still be something new.
Harvey grins at his friend's judgment and clarifies "Just took me some time to pull my head out of my ass and realize that she's the only one for me."
"Man, you must've been really blind there," Alex says, referring to how it's clear as day to everyone around what a jackpot this woman is and how they simply must be made for each other.
"I was," Harvey agrees with a meaningful glance in Donna's direction, putting his hand on her leg and squeezing it through the fabric of her gown.
As she sends him an affectionate smirk he adds "But luckily she's always known me better than I did myself and had the patience to wait until I realized what she'd known all along."
That's when the butterflies in Donna's stomach start fluttering wildly, just like every time Harvey shows his feelings for her in one way or another.
Not needing to know more about the talk the two men were obviously having, she flashes him a beaming smile, places her hand on top of his and silently prays for the butterflies to never stop moving.
