"Oh my... And what would Tai and your sister would think?" Uh, oh. Qrow was smirking.
"H-huh? About what?" Ruby couldn't help but ask nervously. The two strolled down the streets of Vale. Qrow just kept grinning and opened up his scroll to show Ruby an image. It was a photo. Of her straddling Wynion, right before she was going to try to grab the stolen wallet from him.
If they saw it while in a good mood, he would be lucky to die a slow, painful, death...
"Tha… wha…? Give it to me!" Ruby tried to snatch it away, but Qrow held it away from her with his stupid hunter reflexes.
"Mmmph… Tell me about him first kiddo. What was his name? Willy?"
"Wynion."
"What's his last name?"
"He um… doesn't have one." Ruby winced.
"I see… Orphan then. Looked the part anyways. Do you know if he stole that wallet?"
Ruby frowned, "Probably. He's always doing things like that."
"Did you see him do it?" She shook her head of course,
"No! I would have stopped him then!"
"I figured," Qrow snorted, "So since he didn't tell me, how did you two become friends?"
He felt like bursting into laughter right now. Crying. Screaming. For the first time in a very, very long while, the immortal was experiencing an intense swirl of emotions.
Incredulity.
Amusement.
Confusion.
Because the boy right in front of him was making him question his sanity.
Start simple. Ozpin extended his hand to the boy. "Would you be so kind as to hand me my associate's wallet?" The boy said nothing as he handed over Qrow's wallet.
"Well, if that's all, I'll be going…" The headmaster stepped in front of the faunus.
"Do you know how you stole that wallet?"
The boy shrugged, "Semblance, what's it to you?"
Thank god... He seems to truly have no clue...
The headmaster shook his head, "Do you know what a semblance is?"
"Uh… It's a power that resembles the person through its manifestation or something? Why are you asking?" The boy gave him a weary glance.
"Because what you just used, was not a semblance." The boy turned around to leave, but Ozpin grabbed his shoulder. "How would you like a free dinner, courtesy of my associate?"
"No such thing as free…"
"You're right. In exchange, would you permit me a moment of your time?"
Wynion's luck was the worst today. Not only was he caught stealing a wallet, twice, but Ruby was also probably going to do something horrifying to him next time they met. Speckles (he decided that would be the temporary name for the man right next to him, considering the pair that lay atop his nose), insisted on getting dinner in exchange for the two of them talking.
Red flags surrounded this guy. On top of the fact that he supposedly worked with Qrow? It was very likely he was a huntsman who wasn't afraid to take the less than reputable jobs.
Speckles gave him a gentle smile as they finished their dinner at the picnic table. "Won't your associate be mad that you spent his money?" Wynion wondered.
"Maybe, but it's only fair considering he is going to use mine when he orders his next round of drinks." Speckles chuckled. The boy shrugged, studying the man in front of him,
"So why do you want to talk to me?" Speckles was silent for a moment.
"I would be very interested to know how you unlocked your semblance."
Wynion wasn't sure what to make of the strange man. He knew the man with the glasses wanted something, but he couldn't think up a motive that fit his actions. Well, no harm playing along.
"...Well. When I was five, I ran from the orphanage. I had a horrible time there. It was bad enough, that I thought taking my chances on the road would be an improvement. I was wrong. I was constantly starving, alone, and pretty fucking miserable.
Then one day, I get to a town. Town doesn't like the faunus- scratch that, hated them. Never found out why they did so much. But I was on the verge of death. So I asked, begged, for scraps. The townspeople just laughed at the entertainment they were getting, seeing the animal starving to death. It was evening, soon turned to night. Don't know how I lasted that long, but I remember being outside a bakery. In that bakery, I saw this human kid. He looked just like me, but with no stupid ears. He looked happy, eating some pie.
That's when I started wishing.
I wished I wasn't hungry
I wished I wasn't laughed at.
I wished I wasn't beaten.
I wished I wasn't dying.
I didn't want to be hungry.
I didn't want to be a faunus.
I didn't want to die.
I reached out, and I imagined I was eating that pie. And then I felt it, in my hands. The boy was staring at me, mouth opened wide in shock. Then he started crying. I started to eat, and got the hell out of town." Wynion sighed.
"And that, is how I unlocked my semblance."
Speckles gave him a gentle smile, "I believe that was enough for tonight. I must say, we have a lot to talk about next time we meet, Mr…?"
"Wynion, my name is Wynion. And what do you mean 'next time'? Who are you?"
Speckles got up, turning to leave, "I believe most know me as Ozpin."
"Huh, that's quite the story…"
Sat on a bench, was Ruby and Qrow on the airship to Patch. The sky was dark, the stars the lights that filled the void.
"So…?"
"I won't kill him, he sounds like he's okay..."
"Not that part!"
"Then what?" Her uncle grinned as the red reaper folded her arms.
"The picture!"
"I'll think about it…" He ruffled her hair.
Annoyance was evident on her face as she sat in silence, pouting.
Another thought came into her head.
"Hey uncle? I kinda need some advice..."
This chapter was an exposition hell. Things won't be this wonky anywhere else, I just had to do this to get it out of the way, because the plot has to kick in somewhere.
I was going to put Ruby telling Qrow the story of how Wynion and her became friends, but this chapter was painful to write. I'll add in those kinds of fun stuff to this chapter later. Maybe as an extra section at the bottom or something?
Ah well, I suppose my chaotic style of writing is most revealing here. I'll be going back to fix stuff here. Much later. I'll try to turn this into more of an interaction between Ozpin and Wynion rather than Ozpin telling Wynion shit. I'll probably change the exposition section to Ozpin hanging out with Wynion occasionally, telling him things and slowly building up trust.
ALSO, the start to the cannon timeline is approaching REAAAALLY soon! I can't decide how to have Wynion interact in initiation. Ugh. So much stuff to do...
And finally, Mark of Arendelle (I figured since I had the time, I could at the very least go back and spell your name right), you might be waiting for like, more than twenty chapters (I forgot to add when I made this that this is a very conservative estimate. More like 30-40)? Don't worry, stuff will happen in Beacon.
Okay, I'm fixing this chapter, managed to plan out something that felt far superior to the previous version, but is going to require another chapter or two. But hey, IT'S SO MUCH BETTER!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
