It was a typical day in the school playground.
Seven-Year-Old Roselynn Rivers was running about, having a fun time as usual. She was a tiny girl, the smallest one in her class. She had tan skin, honey-like brown eyes and unruly curly dark brown hair that hung just past her shoulders that her mum loved to play around with, even though Rose found it annoying. Today it was in a couple pig-tail braids with bows around the ends. After a game of tag with a few friends she ran off towards the slide, one of her favorite things to do. As she climbed the ladder, a boy called Tommy Vegas who had always been rude not only to her but to most of their class, came over and tugged her down by the back of her jacket.
Rose let out a huff as she fell to the ground.
"I'm first, Rivers." He sneered, giving her a mean look and tugging at one of her braids causing her to squeal in pain before he started to climb up the ladder himself, laughing up a storm. Rose glared at him from her spot on the ground...and then something strange happened. One of the rungs of the slide's ladder seemed to vanish for a second, just as Tommy went to put his foot on it. He gave a startled yelp and fell backwards, landing on the ground on his butt right beside Rose who let out a bark of laughter. That was just brilliant. She supposed she should feel bad that he'd gotten hurt but she just couldn't help herself. He'd just been bullying her after all. It was hard to feel bad for someone like that.
"Climb much, Vegas?" she teased before she scampered to her feet and headed up the ladder and down the slide. But as she continued to play she couldn't help but wonder if she really hadseen that ladder rung vanish. Had she somehow done that? No. Not a chance. She must've been seeing things. Tommy had just slipped. That's all.
Years went by and Roselynn noticed that strange things like the incident with Tommy and the ladder seemed to keep happening around her. It happened way too often to be a coincidence. She even started to experiment a bit. When she was alone in her room she'd focus on something she could feel pulsating deep inside her, something that seemed to radiate power. When she did she could make the lights flicker in her room or make a book float for a few seconds. She never told anyone. Not even mum and dad. She knew people would think she was strange. Maybe her friends wouldn't like her anymore or think she was a bit freaky.
Today however, Rose was happy as could be because it just so happened to be her eleventh birthday, and even better, it was Saturday so she could spend the whole day having fun with her mum and dad. She climbed out of bed and dressed quickly. She could smell french toast being cooked downstairs. Yummy! That was her favorite. With a spring in her step she headed off for breakfast. She was so excited that she went down the stairs a little too fast and lost her footing. She gave a yelp of surprise as she started to fall but then that little power core within her seemed to spark and she felt something invisible cushion her fall as she toppled down the stairs landing softly at the bottom of the staircase. She got to her feet and straightened her clothes. Man that was cool!
"Rose," her mum called from the kitchen, she'd probably heard her yell "are you okay, little one?"
Rose rolled her eyes. She hated when mum called her that. It wasn't like she was three anymore.
"Yeah. I'm fine mum," she called back. She entered the kitchen and smiled as she saw mum working at the stove and dad sitting with his paper as usual and a small pile of presents on the table.
"Hey there, pup," Dad said brightly "Happy birthday."
"Thanks, dad," Rose answered running over to give him a hug. He ruffled her hair and laughed.
She dropped into her usual seat, knowing she wouldn't be allowed to have her presents until after breakfast. That was the routine. In a few minutes mum had placed a plate of eggs, french toast and bacon in front of her.
"Happy birthday, little one," she said, bending down to kiss her on top of her head. Rose sighed, she'd be called little one until she was a grown-up at this rate.
"Thanks mum. Looks delicious," Rose replied happily. It was. Mum had always been a wonderful cook.
After breakfast she got to open her presents: a few new books she'd been eyeing, an outfit and a little golden pendant with a dragon on it. That was her favorite, she loved dragons. She put it on right away and smiled at her parents brightly
"Thanks guys!"
"You're welcome, pup," Dad said "And guess where we're going?"
"Where?" Rose asked excitedly
"The roller rink!" Mum replied with a grin
"Awesome!" Rose yipped, she'd always loved rollerblading.
As the three of them piled in the car Rose couldn't help but think how lucky she was. Loving parents, nice house and not to mention her powers. Even though she didn't tell anyone about it, it made her feel special. Like she was some kind of super hero. Maybe when she got bigger she would be able to help other people with her gifts. That would be nice.
Little did she know that this day was going to change her life forever.
