Episode 237: The Winstrate Family
At the Lavaridge Town Pokémon Center, and used it to make contact with Norman. Sora waited patiently for Norman to reply. Norman has answered it.
"Hello?" Norman answered.
"Hey Norman. Long-time no hear," Sora joked, making Norman laughed a bit.
"Well, if it isn't it Sora. I trust you're doing good on your journey," Norman said.
"I am. Kairi and I are making great progress. We caught some Hoenn region Pokémon and I already earned four Gym Badges," Sora said.
"Glad to hear it, Sora. I just heard from May and she has earned herself three contest ribbons," Norman said. "Also Brendan has won three Badges; that's one less than you have."
"At least he's doing good. Kairi and I will be on our way to Petalburg City soon, so I hope you'll be ready for our Gym battle when we get there," Sora said. Norman chuckled.
"I'm already looking forward to it. And I'll be training hard for it, so give me something what I can expect from a Pokémon League Champion, okay?" Norman asked.
"You do the same as a Gym Leader," Sora said. Both Sora and Norman made an agreement and hung up on their PokéNavs. Sora rejoined Kairi in the room he's sharing with.
"So, how did it go?" Kairi asked.
"It is on," Sora said.
"Just how do you think we'll get to Petalburg City?" Kairi asked. Sora accessed the PokéNav and looked over the Hoenn map.
"Our sure fire bet is to head down to reach Petalburg City is by going back to Mauville City and make a left turn onto Verdanturf Town and then go in through Rusturf City and get out just outside of Rustboro City," Sora said.
"Great! We can get going in the morning," Kairi said. Sora agreed with his girlfriend and went off to sleep. After eating some breakfast and picking up some needed supplies, Sora, Kairi, Pikachu, and Angel started to embark to Petalburg City for Sora's next Gym battle. They traveled for days heading through Fallarbor Town and through the desert, makingbsure there weren't any nasty surprises waiting for them just like before. Along the way, they came across a wild Torkoal. It was digging through the ground for something to eat.
"A Torkoal," Sora said.
"It looks like he's looking for some food," Kairi said.
"The Pokédex said Torkoal normally live in the mountains, so I guess it can live in the desert too," Sora said. He took out a Pokéball and threw it. "Go for it, Corphish!" Corphish comes out and surprises the wild Torkoal. "Use Crabhammer!" Corphish swings his pincers at the coal Pokémon and lands a hit in his head. The Torkoal fights back with a Flamethrower. "Dig!" Corphish dug into the ground and avoids Torkoal's Flamethrower. The lobster-like Pokémon tunnels his way towards Torkoal and jumps out from underneath. "Now use Bubble Beam!" Corphish fires Bubble Beam and it blasts Torkoal in a sud of bubbles. Torkoal was weakened enough and Sora got a Pokéball ready and threw it. The Pokéball struck Torkoal and he flows inside it. The Pokéball wobbles around and around for a moment and then stars swirls around the Pokéball confirming the catch. Sora's Pokédex starts buzzing asking him if he wants to keep Torkoal or send him to Professor Oak's lab. Sora chose to keep Torkoal in exchange for Wingull. "Done!" Kairi gave Sora a deserved kiss for that fine catch.
"Very good," Kairi said.
"Thanks Kairi," Sora said. He looked at her and saw how tired she got. "You okay, Kairi?"
"I'm fine, Sora. Just need to rest my feet," Kairi said.
"Not out here, you're not. I think I have a solution for a case like this," Sora said, taking out Mudsdale's Pokéball and threw it to let out Mudsdale. He helped his girlfriend on the back of the draft horse Pokémon before climbed on himself. Pikachu and Angel both joined in. "Now, who said chivalry is dead?" Kairi giggled as she hugged her boyfriend from behind.
"I like this solution a lot, Sora," Kairi said. Sora smiled.
"Alright, Mudsdale. Giddy up, git along now," Sora said, making Mudsdale stand on his hooves and gallops through the desert. Mudsdale kept galloping as Kairi held on. Angel held onto Pikachu as well. As Mudsdale kept running, it caught the attention of a wild Cacnea and Cacturne in the area. Going down a path in the desert, May and Max traveled through the desert with their feet hurting, dehydrated and lost.
"This is great, May. We are totally lost," Max said, panting.
"I would do anything for a miracle right about now," May said. Suddenly, the siblings hears something coming behind them fast. They turned to see a dust cloud coming fast towards them. May and Max flinched when it came close enough and an equine-like creature stops and raises its hooves, scaring May and Max.
"Hey! What's the matter with you, Mudsdale!" A familiar voice called out. May and Max recognized the voice. "What's got you so worked up?" The voice belonged to Sora as Mudsdale lowered down with Kairi, Pikachu, and Angel still holding on. He saw the siblings and he smiled when he saw them. "May? Max?"
"Sora! Kairi!" May said.
"It's only you!" Max said.
"Sorry if Mudsdale scared you," Sora apologized.
"We just weren't expecting to bump into you like this," Kairi said.
"It's okay," May said. She realized something when she looked right at Mudsdale. Max was excited to seeing a Mudsdale for the first time in his life.
"I can't believe it! A Mudsdale! Right in front of me!" Max said, excitingly.
"Isn't this Mudbray?" May asked.
"He was, until Mudbray evolved battling a Camerupt," Sora said.
"So, why are you riding on Mudsdale?" May asked.
"Kairi's feet were hurting and we thought of having ourselves a ride t rest our feet and keep going," Sora said.
"Pikachu," Pikachu said.
"Eevee," Angel said.
Sora and Kairi filled the siblings on what they have been up since they last saw each other. Kairi shared on when she won her third ribbon and Sora had won his fourth badge and they were now on their way to Petalburg City. May and Max told them they were on their way there as well, to see their parents.
"Well, since we're going the same way, we should stick together for a while," Kairi said.
"That's a good idea," May said.
"It'll be awesome to get to hang out with again," Max added.
"Glad you think so," Sora said. Just then, the foursome continued to make their way to Petalburg City. As they continued onwards, they came across a farmhouse in the middle of the desert. "I don't remember coming this way before." And elderly woman wearing a pink shirt and a purple long skirt. Her gray hair is tied in a bun and with her is a Camerupt are having a sip of water. The Camerupt's humps were long. She and Camerupt took notice of the vistors.
"Oh! We have visitors," the old woman said.
"Hi there. We were passing through. We hope we're not bothering you," Sora said.
"Oh no, you're no bother, dearie," the old woman said. "You lot must be exhausted. How about you come in and rest your feet and fill those empty bellies with some good wholesome food." At such a perfect timing, all four stomachs starts growling.
"I guess we could stick around for some lunch," Sora a said. Max and the girls nodded in agreement. As they stepped inside, they sat on the table along with an obviously loving family, all with smiles on their faces. The father has a beard to go with his dark green hair. He wore a lime green shirt under a dark green vest and dark gray pants, and brown shoes. The mother of the family wore a lavender dress, had dark red hair. The little girl had the same dark red hair as the mother and wore a lemon yellow dress. "Thank you for inviting us to lunch, ma'am."
"It's our pleasure. My name is Vicky. I'll let the rest of the family introduce themselves," Vicky said.
"My name is Victor," he said.
"I am his wife Victoria," she said.
"And my name is Vivi," the little girl introduced.
"My name's Sora and this is my girlfriend Kairi," Sora introduced.
"Hello," Kairi greeted.
"My name's May and this is my little brother Max," May introduced.
"Nice to meet you," Max said.
"Pika, Pi," Pikachu said.
"Eevee," Angel said.
"I must say, I was mighty surprised to see you lot out here," Vicky said.
"Huh? Why's that?" Sora asked.
"Well, it's because we're a farming family and frankly we're the only house you would see out here. So, the only food you would find here would be what we grow," Victor said.
"So, it's just the four of you?" Kairi asked.
"Yes, but that was before our son Vito left on his Pokémon journey just two months ago," Victoria said.
" Where is Vito now?" May asked.
"Oh, he's miles away by now. He announced he wanted to be a Pokémon League Champion. We all thought long and hard, so we supported his wishes and let him follow his dreams," Vicky said, sipping her tea. "Enough of us. Judging by the way you have a Pikachu, an Eevee, and a Mudsdale with you, I'll take it that you youngsters are Pokémon trainers, aren't you?"
"Yes we are. All of us, except for Max here," Sora said.
"But I do plan to be one when I'm old enough," Max said.
"I see," Vicky said. She had a sinister smirk as did the rest of the family. The group finished up their meal and they all sighed with satisfaction.
"Wow, that was great, A Munchlax could be happy here," Sora said.
"It sure was," Max agreed.
"We were lucky to stumble on this place, accident or not," Kairi said.
"I'm with her, it was delicious," May said. She turned to her little brother. "Did you have enough to eat, Max?"
"Sure did," Max said.
"We're so happy that you enjoyed yourselves. If you like you can stay and relax before you take off on your way," Victoria said.
"Thanks," Kairi said.
"After eating that much, I don't think I can take a walk about ten feet yet," Max said.
"Me neither," May said. Vivi walks up to Max and gave him a cup of water.
"Here's some water for you," Vivi said.
"Thanks. To be honest, I'm more thirsty than hungry right now," Max said, taking the cup. She giggled.
"You're funny. And you're cute," Vivi said. Max blushes at the compliment, and May looked at her brother with a teasing expression. Then again, she remembered when she said the same thing to Brendan when she was little.
(Flashback, May's childhood)
May and Brendan had met for the first time. Norman and Professor Birch were sitting on the couch, talking as Brendan looked over to the brown-haired girl. He waved at her and she blushes and looks away.
"Kids, how about you go outside and play?" Professor Birch suggested.
"Go on, May. Play with the Professor's son while daddy talks to Professor Birch," Norman said.
"Okay, daddy," Young May said. Both kids got up off the couch and went outside.
"And stay close to the house, kids," Norman said.
"Okay, dad," Young Brendan said.
The kids stepped outside of the house and started to play tag.
"You're it!" Young Brendan said.
"Not for long!" Young May said, chasing after him. They both laughed as they kept tagging each other. It went on until May tripped and scrapped her knee. "Owie!" She began crying. Brendan heard her cry and went over to her with concern.
"You okay, May?" Young Brendan asked.
"I heart my knee," Young May cried.
"Let me see," Young Brendan said. She shows him the scrape. "Is that it? Don't worry. I got something for that. He took out a small bandaid and placed it on the scrape. "Does that feel better? Bandaid always make it better."
"A little," Young May asked. She tries to stand up, but Young Brendan helps her up.
"I got you," Young Brendan said, helping her up. Her face turns red when he did. She developing a crush on the professor's son.
"Thank you, Brendan," Young May said.
"You're welcome, May" Young Brendan said.
"I think you're very nice. Also I think you're cute," Young May said, making Young Brendan blush. Now he was delevoping a crush on his dad's friend. The two of them played some more until it was time for Young May and her dad to go home.
"Do you have to go home, May?" Young Brendan asked.
"Sorry, I liked playing with you, because you're fun. But, I hope we get to play with each other soon," Young May said. That made Young Brendan smile.
"You too, May," Young Brendan said.
"Also one more thing," Young May said. Before he could ask what it was, she gave Young Brendan a peck on the cheek. "For earlier."
(Flashback, the present)
May remembered all the times they had fun together even if they had only seen each other a few times, but he had occupied her thoughts as time passed.
"Thanks so much for the hospitality. Is there something we can do to repay you?" Sora asked. Vicky grinned.
"Actually, there is something you can do for us," Vicky said. She and her family got into a pose. "Family matriarch Vivky!"
"Her son, Victor!"
"His wife, Victoria!"
"An their daughter, Vivi!"
"Together we are the Winstrate Famiy!" The Winstrate proclaimed.
"The one thing you can do for us is to battle all of us!" Vicky challenged.
"Battle?" Sora asked.
"That's right! Do you accept our challenge or are we too much for you to handle?" Vicky asked.
"I guess we accept," Sora said.
"Why not? I mean, it's the least we can do to pay you back," Kairi said.
"That's the spirit! It'll be four of us against the four of you!" Vicky said.
"Four?! Max isn't a real trainer," Sora said.
"It's okay, Sora. I can just use one of your Pokémon to battle," Max said.
"Just hope you'll do better than you did the last time," Sora said. "Which one do you want to borrow?"
"I'll decide later," Max said.
"Now that is settled, we have our battle!" Vicky said.
"Um, why are you challenging us into a battle, if I may ask?" May did ask.
"Well, it's becuase it's to honor my son, Vito," Victor said.
"None of us are as good as he is, but that doesn't stop us from battling," Victoria said.
"Since we don't get visitors very often, we only end up battling each other, but it gets boring after a while," Vivi said.
"That makes sense," May said.
"If that's how you feel, then we can take you up on that, even if I said I already said we accept," Sora said.
"Splendid! Let's head over to the battlefield!" Vicky said. The family led the guests to the battlefield and they were amazed by how it looks.
"Wow, it looks like an official battlefield," Max said.
"Before we begin, I will make the rules. Each trainer will be allowed to one Pokémon each; that means no substitutions. The battle will be over if either Pokémon is unable to continue battling. And there will be no time limit. The first battle shall be Victor! Victoria will be second! Vivi shall be third, and I, Grandma Vicky will be the last! In the duration of the first three battles, I will act as referee!" Vicky announced. "Now, who among the visitors shall be the first to battle?"
"I can take a whack at it," Kairi volunteered.
"Very well! Victor versus Kairi!" Vicky announced. Kairi and Victor took their positions. Sora, May, and Max waited for their turn. "Since Victor has the home field advantage, he shall make the first choice!" Victor took out a Pokéball and threw it.
"It's your time to shine, Zigzagoon!" Victor called out as he threw his Pokéball and unleashes his Zigzagoon. Kairi looked over to Angel.
"Okay, Angel, you're up!" Kairi said.
"Eevee!" Angel said, entering the battlefield.
"It's Zigzagoon versus Eevee! Begin the match!" Vicky called out.
"Zigzagoon! Tackle! Let's go!" Victor ordered. Zigzagoon charges towards Angel with a full force of its body.
"Dodge it with Quick Attack!" Kairi ordered. Angel avoids the tiny raccoon Pokémon's Tackle just by running pass it. "Now use Headbutt!" Angel lands a Headbutt onto Victor's Zigzagoon.
"Zigzagoon! Use Thunderbolt!" Victor ordered. Zigzagoon unleashes a Thunderbolt right at Kairi's Eevee. It struck Angel on the spot.
"Angel!" Kairi gasped.
"Now use Tackle!" Victor ordered. Zigzagoon charges towards Angel again.
"Angel! Swift!" Kairi ordered. Angel fires Swift and it struck Zigzagoon. "Now use Tackle!" Angel charges right at Zigzagoon and lands a critical hit and it fell on its back, knocked out.
"Zigzagoon is unable to battle! Eevee wins! Kairi is the winner!" Vicky announced.
"Way to go, Angel!" Kairi cheered.
"Eevee, Eev!" Angel said. Pikachu was ecstatic that Angel had won. He can tell she's gotten stronger since battling Matt's Sharpedo. Kairi rejoined the rest of the challengers as Pikachu smiled at Angel warmly and affectionately. She did the same thing. The blooming romance between the two Pokémon hasn't escaped May's notice.
"How cute," May gushed.
"Oh, I thought you had her, hun," Victoria said.
"I thought so too, honey. She's no Vito, but she can put up a fight just like him," Victor said.
"Hm, not what I was expecting, but it was a good match. The next battle shall be Victoria! And whom among the challengers are next?" Vicky asked.
"That'll be me," May said, stepping up.
"Very well! Victoria versus May! Choose your Pokémon and begin the battle!" Vicky called out. Victoria took out a Pokéball and threw it.
"I choose you, Roselia!" Victoria called out. The Pokéball opens and her Roselia emerges in an elegant stance.
"A Roselia," Sora said.
"Just like Drew's," Max said. Sora and Kairi both looked at Max.
"How do you know Drew?" Sora asked.
"May met him in a few Pokémon Contests and she lost to him on her very first Contest. Beautifly had the advantage, but his Roselia took her down fast," Max explained. He looked to the couple. "Why? How do you know him?"
"Met him in Slateport City and Kairi whooped him and won her second ribbon there. I battled him and I won," Sora said. Max humphed.
"You're a Pokémon League Champion, he never stood a chance," Max said.
"Drew his part too," Sora told him. He could tell by the look on May's face, she was determined to battle since her opponent is a Roselia.
"Now, don't be too rough on her, Roselia," Victoria said.
"I don't need sympathy from a Roselia!" May said, taking out a Pokéball and threw it. "Beautifly, take the stage!" Her Beautifly flitters onto the battlefield. "Use Gust!" Beautifly flaps its wings and creates a powerful wind. Roselia gets hit by the wind attack. "Now use Silver WInd!" Beautifly flaps its wings again and sends out Silver WInd and it was enough to knock out Victoria's Roselia.
"Oh, wow!" Vivi said as she watched.
"Oh, I never win these!" Victoria groaned.
"I told her not to use that Pokémon, but then again, she'd never listen. The victory goes to May," Vicky announced.
"You were great, Beautifly," May said.
"Beautifly," May's Beautifly chirped.
"The score is still in our favor," Kairi said.
"It looks like it's your turn now, Max," Sora said. "Have you thought about which one you wanna use?"
"I thought long and hard and I decided to go with your Electrike," Max stated. Sora took out the Pokéball containing his Electrike and lets him out.
"Sure thing, Max," Sora said. "Electrike, be sure you do whatever Max says, okay?" Electrike nods as he agreed that he'll obey Max.
"Up next is Viv versus Max!" Vicky announced.
"I'm not a real trainer yet, Vivi. so I don't know how well I'm going to do with this, but I'll try my best to give you a good battle, okay?" Max stated.
"That's fine with me, Max," Vivi said. "Well do the same." Vicky smiled.
"That's the spirit! Pokémon battles aren't just about winning or losing," Vicky said.
"And Max no matter which one of us wins, you and I are gonna be good friends, right?" Viv flirted as she winked at him. That made Max blush.
"I guess so," Max said.
"Heey! Am I crazy or does my little brother have a girlfriend?" May teased.
"Now begin the match!" Vicky called out.
"Marill, I choose you!" Vivi called out and her Marill enters the battlefield.
"Vivi and Max. Has a nice ring to it," Max said all lovestruck. Max snapped out when Sora gave a loud whistle.
"Hey, casanova! Stay focused!" Sora called out.
"I'm just getting warmed up!" Max said, holding the Pokéball. "Go! Electrike!" The Pokéball opens and Sora's Electrike enters the battlefield ready to wait for Max's intructions.
"Okay Marill! Water Gun!" Vivi ordered.
"Dodge with Quick Attack!" Max ordered. Electrike uses Quick Attack, but he got hit by Marill's Water Gun. "Try using Thunder Fang!" Electrike came running towards Marill with his teeth emitting electricity.
"Use Rollout!" Vivi ordered. Marill rolled into a ball and rolled right into Electrike. Each hit got stronger each time Rollout had struck. Electrike has been taken out before he knew what hit him.
"Electrike is unable to battle! Marill wins! It's Vivi who wins the round!" Vicky announced.
"I can't believe I lost," Max said in disbelief. He knew Marill was weak against Electric Type attacks, but Rollout did a serious number on him. Sora went up to his Electrike and picked him up.
"You okay, Electrike?" Sora asked.
"Trike," Electrike responded weakly.
"Don't sweat it. You'll do better next time. And I know you'll do great," Sora said. Max hands Sora back his Pokéball and he calls back his Electrike. He turned to Max. "You did your best too, Max."
"Yeah, sure," Max said.
"Don't let it get you down. I'm sure you'll be a great trainer someday. I can gurantee it," Sora said.
"You believe that?" Max asked.
"I do. Your dad would say the same thing," Sora said. Max suddenly started to feel better about losing.
"When I do become a trainer, will you battle me?" Max asked.
"Sure. And when you do, I expect you to train hard for it, because I won't go easy on you when we do battle," Sora said. Now it was Vicky against Sora. He and the Winstrate matriarch stared at each other as they prepared for the last battle. "Looks like it's two to one. Even if I lose this battle, it'll just end in a draw, but since it's a favor to them, they expect us to give it everything we've got."
"Pika, Pika!" Pikachu said.
"Alright, sonny! Time to show me your stuff!" Vicky said.
"You do the same thing!" Sora said.
"And I'll be acting as the referee!
"Great! The Pokémon that I'm gonna go with is: Camerupt!" Vicky said as she took out her Pokéball and threw it. Her Camerupt enters the battlefield.
"Knew you were gonna go with that, so I'm gonna go with this!" Sora said, taking out a Pokéball and threw it. "Go! Mudkip!" The Pokéball opens and Mudkip enters the battlefield. "Okay Mudkip! Start up with Water Gun!" Mudkip fires Water Gun right towards the camel-like Pokémon.
"Camerupt! Block it with Sandstorm!" Vicky ordered. Camerupt whipped up a sandstorm and it blocks Mudkip's Water Gun.
"Wasn't expecting that to happen," May said.
"Flannery pretty much did the same thing with her Magcargo. Sora managed to find a way around it, but I wonder how he's going to do that," Kairi said.
"Eevee," Angel said.
"Mudkip! Use Tackle!" Sora ordered. udkip charged right at Camerupt and landed a hit onto the eruption Pokémon. Camerupt lands on the ground.
"Get up, Camerupt! It didn't hit you that hard!" Vicky called out. Camerupt tries to get back on its hooves. "Come on, Camerupt! I know you can do it!" Camerupt manages to get back on its hooves. "That's the spirit, Camerupt!"
"Mudkip! Waterfall!" Sora ordered. Mudkip surrounds himself with water and heads towards Camerupt and lands another hit onto it.
"Camerupt! Use Take Down!" Vicky ordered. Camerupt charges towards Mudkip.
"Dodge it, Mudkip!" Sora called out. Mudkip avoids Camerupt's attack. "Now use Mud-Slap!"
"Camerupt! Block that with Sandstorm!" Vicky ordered. Camerupt blocks Mudkip's Mud-Slap with Sandstorm. "Now use Take Down!" Camerupt charges towards Mudkip.
"Dodge it, Mudkip!" Sora called out. Camerupt came too fast and landed a hit. Camerupt had taken some recoil damage. Mudkip manages to get back up on his feet. Mudkip then started to evolve, making everyone gasp in awe.
"Mudkip!" May exclaimed.
"Mudkip's evolving!" Kairi said.
"Eevee!" Angel said.
Mudkip stood on his hind legs and finished evolving. Mudkip had evolved into a Marshtomp.
"Marshtomp!" The newly evolved Marshtomp cried out.
"Not bad. I wasn't expecting your Mudkip to evolve during our battle. Doesn't mean you're gonna win! Camerupt! Use Take Down!" Vicky ordered. Camerupt charges towards Marshtomp again, but Sora wasn't going to put up with it.
"Dodge and use Mud Shot!" Sora ordered. Marshtomp fired a powerful Mud Shot right at Camerupt and landed a super-effective hit.
"So cool!" Max beamed.
"Marshtomp must have learned it after evolving," May said.
"Go for it, Sora and Marshtomp!" Kairi cheered.
"Pika!" Pikachu added.
"Eevee!" Angel added.
"Marshtomp! Water Gun!" Sora ordered. Marshtomp fired Water Gun and struck Camerupt on the spot. "Water Gun again!" Marshtomp fired another Water Gun.
"Camerupt! Block it with Sandstorm!" Vicky ordered. Camerupt whips up another Sandstorm and it blocks Marshtomp's Water Gun and it was a little stronger than before. The water attack breaks through Sandstorm and struck Camerupt again. Vicky exclaimed. "How could that be?!"
"Now use Waterfall!" Sora ordered. Marshtomp charges towards Camerupt with his body covered in water and landed a hit onto Camerupt. Camerupt was down and out.
"Camerupt is unable to battle! Marshtomp wins! The victory goes to Sora and it is the visiting team that are winners in the team of four at three to one!" Victor announced. Vicky walked up to her fallen Camerupt.
"Are you alright, Camerupt?" Vicky asked.
"Camerupt," Camerupt answered.
"Don't feel bad for losing. You did your best and I couldn't be prouder of you. Vito would be proud of you too," Vicky said. Camerupt smiled knowing it did its part for the battle. She walked up to the winning team. "You lot are better than I thought. And the way you battled, Sora, it reminded me a lot of Vito."
"Really?" Sora asked.
"You do," Vicky said.
With the battles over and done with, the group made their leave of the farm, but not before saying goodbye to the Winstrates. They even gave them some vegetables for the road.
"Thanks for treating us for lunch," Sora said.
"No, thank you for giving us a series of battles," Victor said.
"And thanks for giving us some of these vegetables," Kairi said.
"Not a problem," Victoria said.
"We know you're going to make some yummy dishes with those," Vivi said.
"Take care, kids," Victor said.
"And safe travels," Victoria said.
