Author's note: I was planning on splitting this into two chapters but I decided to put it out as one long chapter to cap off this story line. A book three is currently in the works so stay tuned and thank you to everyone who followed and supported this story.

Chapter 47

"Have you decided already?" asked Dr. Hensley as William sat across from his desk inside his office.

"No sir...I'm still weighing my options on whether to stay here or not." said William.

"Well I can't say I'll be thrilled if you decide to leave Princeton...but it's totally up to you since you already completed your dissertation and a couple more studies...well above what your agreement with the university was..." said Prof. Hensley.

"Thank you sir..." William said.

"I guess a career in the private sector has it's perks...higher pay for sure...better benefits...and you get to have all the new toys in your lab...unlike in the education sector where everything is accounted and audited...with budget cuts and all that crap." Dr. Hensley said.

"I know sir...and you're the first person to know this...I haven't even told my parents or my girlfriend about this job offer in California." William said. "Knowing my mom, she wouldn't stop pestering me to take this job so her baby boy would be near her." he added, making Dr. Hensley laugh.

"Well, my wife acts the same way...like she never wanted our son to ever leave the house..." said the professor, making William laugh. "How about you and your lady friend? If you don't mind me asking."

"Erin and I are doing okay...she just completed her web design course..." William said. "...so that's something to be proud about..."

"That sounds great...I guess she would be looking for another job now huh?" asked the professor.

"She's already doing that...at least she won't go back to waiting tables and getting lousy tips...not to mention getting lewd looks from some male customers..." said William.

"Well, let me know when you've made a decision..." said the professor before standing up and shaking William's hand.

"I will sir...thank you." William said before turning around and leaving Prof. Hensley's office. He took his phone and decided to call Erin about the job offer in California only to put his phone back in his pocket. He thought it would be better to tell her in person to see how she would react at the thought of him going back to California. He tried to push the thought out of his mind and just focus on tonight's dinner with her, along with Kim and Jimmy.

Later that night...

"Babe are you alright?" Erin asked William who was somewhat staring at his plate while Jim was telling them something about his uncles and aunts back in Montana.

William shook himself awake and smiled at Erin. "Oh sorry...I'm alright..." he said.

"What's wrong? You've been awfully quiet since we got here." asked Erin, facing her boyfriend.

"Nothing babe." William said, hoping Erin would let it go.

"No Will...I know that look...something is clearly bothering you..." said Erin. "Come on, tell me."

William sighed, knowing he had to tell her eventually. "Something came up...I got this job offer from this tech firm up in California doing some clean energy projects and they want me there as one of their associate chief scientists." he said.

Erin looked at him, unable to process the news. "Oh?"

William faced Erin and put his hand on her back to reassure her. "Don't worry, I haven't decided yet."

"What are they offering you?" Erin asked.

"Well...the money is better...way better than what I'm getting now...and the benefits too. But don't worry babe, I told them I'd think about it first." he said to Erin.

"That's what you get for being a genius I suppose...a lot of companies ready to throw money just to have the star pupil on their team." said Jimmy, tapping William on his shoulder.

"Jim?" Kim said while giving him the look. .

"Okay I'm sorry...I didn't mean that." Jim said.

"It's alright Jimmy...I kinda expected this would happen eventually..." Erin said, before leaning over and kissing William on his cheek. "I'm so proud of you babe." she said as they continue having dinner and sharing stories.

William looked at Erin and smiled at her, hopeful that he would make the right decision not only for himself but for her, now that their relationship has been going steady for almost two years now.

Later in William's bedroom...

"Babe what's wrong?" William asked as he stopped kissing his girlfriend. "Are you crying?"

Erin slowly turned aside and pulled the blanket to cover herself. "I'm sorry..." she said, wiping off her tears and turning away from William.

"Why are you crying? Did I hurt you or something?" William asked.

"No..." Erin said.

"Then tell me what's wrong?" asked William as he sat up on the bed.

Erin pushed her face on the pillow and started crying. "I don't want you to go!" she said.

William sighed and gently pulled her to face him. "Hey...hey...I'm not going anywhere..." he said, trying to calm her down. "Don't cry..."

"But I don't want to be selfish either! And I feel like I'm holding you back." she said as she sat up and continued crying on his shoulder.

William hugged her tight, trying to console her. "Hey...babe...you're not holding me back...it's alright..." he said while smiling at her.

"But what about that job offer?" Erin asked, finally calming down.

"Don't worry about it...and besides, they told me that if I decided not to accept their offer, the job would still be mine if I choose to take it in a few years..." said William.

"Really? They said that to you?" asked Erin.

"Babe...you might be forgetting that I'm a genius...I'd be doing them a big favor by joining their company." William said confidently, making Erin laugh a little.

"So you're gonna stay here?" Erin said, wiping off her tears.

"I'm staying here with you." said William, making Erin emotional while hugging him tight.

"Still...I feel like I'm being selfish..." Erin said, slightly bowing her head.

"Hey...I told you it's alright...I chose you..." William said while touching her face.

Erin gave him a weak smile, touched by her boyfriend's affection. "I love you."

William moved close and kissed her lips. "I love you too..." he said before hugging her tight as they continued kissing.

They broke off, trying to catch their breaths as they feel their passion for each other. "I have an idea..." he said.

Erin continued kissing him, alternating between his lips, face and neck. "Hmmm...what's that?..." she asked as she continued with her amorous attacks.

William tried to return his girlfriend's affections, alternately kissing her neck and lips. "I was thinking...that maybe...we should...go on a road trip or something..." he said.

"And where are we going?" Erin asked while continuing to send goosebumps all over William's body.

"I don't know...Miami maybe?" William said.

Erin suddenly faced him, obviously excited. "Really? We're going to Florida?" she asked.

"Yeah...we can get some sun...we'll go to the Everglades if you want...and I really want to visit NASA's Space Center over there..." said William, making Erin laugh.

"What about Kim and Jimmy?" asked Erin.

"It'll just be you and me...so you get to enjoy this all to yourself!" William said, pointing at himself and making Erin laugh and giggle.

Erin moved closer and wrapped her arms around his neck. "Hmm...I love it when you're this cocky and confident..." she said while kissing him.

William returned Erin's affections, holding her tight and feeling her warmth. "You know...I haven't had sex with a web designer before..." he said, whispering in her ears and making her laugh.

"Well Mr. Genius...you're in luck..." she said. "...because my ports need some plugins right now...maybe you have the right hardware..." she added, making William very excited.

"You really know how to talk nerd to me huh?" said William.

"Shut up and come here!" Erin said, suddenly laying on the bed and pulling William close while kissing him passionately. William held her tight, pinning her on the bed before moving in, feeling her warmth and sense of urgency as she opened up, letting William do as he pleases as their bodies become one under the covers.

William opened his eyes and tried to focus his eyes, seeing that it was almost dawn from his window. He turned his head and saw Erin sitting on the floor by his closet. He rubbed the sleep off his eyes and rolled on his side to face his girlfriend. "Babe...what are you doing down there?" he asked as Erin kept quiet. "Babe? Are you okay?"

Erin turned around with a gloomy look on her face, holding something in her hand. "What's the meaning of this?" she asked, showing a gold necklace in her hand.

William saw the piece of jewelry and immediately recognized it as the necklace he gave to Halley before he moved to New Jersey around two years ago. He now remembered his promise to Erin that he would sell the necklace which he obviously forgot. How could he be so stupid? He thought to himself.

"Okay babe...please let me explain..." he calmly said while putting his robe on, hoping Erin would accept his explanation.

"Okay...talk..." said Erin, putting the necklace on the night stand.

William took a deep breath before speaking. "I know I promised to get rid of that but I guess I forgot when I put it in my duffel bag...please don't be mad..." he said.

"You forgot? How can you forget something like this!?" Erin asked.

"I don't know...there were a lot of stuff going on in my mind back then..." he said. "What do you want me say?"

"You know what I think? I think you're still holding on to her!" Erin said, slightly raising her voice.

"Now that's not true at all Erin...you know it as much as I do." said William.

"Then why do still have that stupid necklace!" Erin yelled, letting her anger out while tears started falling on her face.

"I told you I forgot about it." William said. "Please babe...I'm sorry." he said while trying to console her.

Erin quickly backed away. "Stay away from me!" she yelled while putting her hands up, telling him to back off. "How can I trust you if you're still holding on to her!?" she asked while crying uncontrollably.

"Erin please...I'm sorry..." William said.

"No!" Erin yelled. "I know she's been your girlfriend since you were kids...Sarah told me...and I'm just someone you met along the way that you fool around with...until you come back to her." she added.

"We both know that's not true Erin." William answered back.

"Really? Then tell me what is that all about huh!?" Erin yelled while pointing at the necklace. "You promised to get rid of it...you promised!" she added.

"I told you...I forgot about it." said William. "I'm sorry."

Erin then grabbed her clothes and began dressing herself. "I don't believe you...I don't think I can trust you right now..." she said while putting her blouse on.

"Where are you going?" he asked.

"Can't you see I'm leaving!" Erin said as she went to the door. "I'm done Will...I never want to see you again!" she said, surprising William.

"What!? Are you...breaking up with me?" he asked, unable to believe what he just heard.

"Yes...I'm breaking up with you...and nothing you say is gonna make me change my mind!" she said as she opened the door and slammed it behind her, leaving the young man stunned, trying to process on how quickly things escalated.

William knocked on Erin and Kim's apartment door, hoping she would be calm enough and talk to him. He was surprised to see Jimmy open the door, realizing that he spent the night with Kim.

"Hey man..." Jim said as he stepped out onto the hall. "Erin told us everything..."

"She broke up with me..." William said, slightly bowing his head.

Jim took a deep breath and tapped his shoulder. "Well, Kim is with her right now...she won't stop crying..." he said.

"I screwed up Jim...I screwed up big time..." William said.

"Why did you kept that necklace anyway?" asked Jim.

"I don't know...I forgot about it honestly...I just never thought that she would find it..." said William.

"She told us that you were planning on going to Miami so she rummaged through your closet to pack...that's when she saw the necklace in your duffel bag..." Jim said.

"I know..." said William. "She was so excited when I suggested that we take a road trip...just the two of us..." William said.

"I'm so sorry man..." said Jimmy, tapping him on the shoulder.

"What else did she tell you?" asked William.

"Well...she kinda asked me to tell you to stay away from her...that she doesn't want to see you again..." said Jim, surprising William.

"She said that huh?" William asked.

"Yeah...and Kim kinda promised to keep you away from her..." said Jimmy.

"Really? Kim said that?" said William as Jim nodded his head, feeling sorry for his friend and helpless with his situation.

"What are you gonna do now?" asked Jim.

"I don't know...cry myself to sleep I guess..." said William, trying to keep himself together.

"Hey that's not funny..." said Jim, "Just don't do anything stupid okay?"

"I know Jim..." he said. "I'll just go back to my apartment..."

"Don't worry, I'll keep you posted about Erin..." Jim assured him.

"Thanks Jim." William said before turning around and going back into his apartment. Jimmy locked at him and can't help but feel sad at how it ended between him and Erin.

A few days later...

"Well I can't say that I'm not disappointed to see you leave Dr. Hofstadter." said Dr. Hensley as William sat across from him in his office.

"I'm sorry sir...but I just have too many bad memories here in New Jersey...and none of those were from here in Princeton..." said William. "My grandma died a couple of years ago, then my grandpa...and now this thing with my ex-girlfriend." he said.

"I'm sorry to hear that..." said Dr. Hensley. "Is there any way for the two of you to make up and be together again?"

"I tried everything professor...she already made up her mind..." said William.

"I'm sorry Will...I wish I could help..." Dr. Hensley said.

"Thank you sir...I'm gonna go now...I still have to file my paperwork at the HR Department...among other things..." said William before standing up and shaking Dr, Hensley's hand.

"Okay...you keep in touch...and you're always welcome here, if you decide to come back..." said Dr. Hensley as William left his office, seeing Jim waiting for him at the hallway.

"Hey..." William greeted Jim.

"I heard you were leaving..." asked Jimmy.

"Yeah...I was gonna tell you after my meeting with Dr. Hensley..." he said.

"This is too sudden Will...are you sure you wanna do this?" asked Jim.

"It's done Jimmy...I already told that company in California that I'm gonna take up their job offer..." he said as he pulled out a key from his pocket. "Here...take this..."

"What is this for?' Jimmy asked.

"The keys to my apartment. I'm leaving in about a week and I don't have time to clear out my apartment...so I'm leaving everything to you until my lease expires in a month..." William said. "...sell everything and keep the money if you want...I don't care..."

"Uh...okay...but what about your grandma's house? Who's gonna watch over it now?" Jim asked.

"I'm going to meet with a real estate agent now...I'm planning on leasing it out...at least I'll get some money out of it until I decide later if I'll sell it or something..." William said. "I'm really sorry for springing this up on you..."

"Hey it's alright Will...you're my best friend, of course I'll help you..." Jimmy said.

"Thanks a lot..." William said, tapping him on his shoulder.

"You're welcome Will..." said Jimmy as William walked away.

Meanwhile in California...

"Sarah wait up!" Kyle called, running after the young lady. "I've been looking for you..."

"Hey Kyle..." Sarah greeted him back.

"Well, I'm leaving tomorrow so I thought I'd say goodbye...since, you know..." Kyle said, hesitating for a little bit.

"Do you have all your stuff with you?" she asked.

"Yeah...some odds and ends, but I'm ready." Kyle said.

"You must be excited huh?" asked the young lady.

"It feels different actually." said Kyle.

"Really? How?" asked Sarah.

"You know...being in a new environment...meeting new people, that sort of stuff..." he said. "...kinda like when you put a fish in a new tank, you don't just dunk him in, you have to let the plastic bag in the water so the fish can get used to the water temperature..." he said, making Sarah laugh.

"Well...I want you to have this..." said Sarah as she pulled out something from her backpack.

"What is this?" Kyle said while ripping the wrapping paper, revealing a leather-bound journal. "Wow...this is so nice...thanks Sarah." said Kyle, admiring the journal.

"I'm glad you liked it." the young lady said. "Now you'll have something to write your ideas...whatever..." she added.

"I'll keep this safe...I promise." said the young man. Without warming, Sarah hugged Kyle, surprising the young man. "Uh...okay..." he said as he got a whiff of Sarah's perfume.

"I'm gonna miss you..." said the young lady.

Kyle decided to return her hug. "I'll miss you too...miss genius!" he said, making her laugh as they released each other. "Don't worry Sarah, I'll keep in touch...okay?"

Sarah nodded. "Okay..." she said, trying hard not to get emotional with the myriad of feelings inside of her. "Bye..." she added before walking away.

"Bye Sarah..." Kyle said, waving back while watching her walk away. "I really wish I wasn't going." he told himself as he watched the young lady and her long blonde hair at a distance.

Back in New Jersey...

William knocked on Erin and Kim's apartment door, hoping they would hear him out one last time.

"Oh...it's you..." Kim said to William. "She doesn't want to see you Will...and I know you came here to say goodbye..."

"Jimmy told you huh?" William said.

"Yeah..." Kim said before folding her arms.

"Can I at least say goodbye to her?" William asked.

"No William...I'm sorry...but she doesn't want to see you anymore...and I promised her that I'd keep you away from her!" Kim said, determined to defend her best friend. "You hurt her Will...and if you keep insisting on talking to her, then we're gonna have a problem." she said with a stern expression.

William sighed, knowing it's useless to argue with Kim. "Okay...but can you at least tell her something from me? Please..." he said, hoping she would agree.

"Yeah sure..." Kim said.

He took a deep breath before speaking. "Tell her...how much I love her...and I'm so sorry for hurting and making her cry...but if she really doesn't want to see me anymore, then I won't try to bother her anymore...I just want her to be happy..." he said.

Kim gave him a weak smile. "Alright Will, I'll tell her everything you said...I promise."

"Thanks Kim." he said before turning around and going back to his apartment.

Kim closed the door and saw Erin standing behind it, crying her eyes out after hearing William's touching message to her. "Come here..." Kim said as she pulled Erin close to hug her.

"What am I gonna do Kim?" Erin said as she cried on her best friend's shoulder.

Kim pulled her towards the couch to sit down. "Shh...why can't you just talk to him and get him back?" she asked.

"I can't...I feel so betrayed...and I can't accept the fact that I'll always be second to Halley..." Erin said as she continued crying.

"Don't you think that's a little unfair to William?" asked Kim.

"I don't know..." Erin said. "I don't know what to do..." she added as Kim tried her best to comfort her, wishing that the young couple would get back together.

After almost a week...

"I'm gonna miss you man." Jim said as William loaded the last of his stuff in the trunk of his car.

"Me too...but there's nothing for me here now..." William said, closing the trunk and facing the couple.

I'm sorry about everything Will...I tried my best to get her to talk to you but she's just too stubborn..." said Kim, trying not get too emotional at William leaving them behind.

"It's alright Kim...we all did what we could..." said William before hugging Kim for the last time. "Thanks for everything...and say goodbye to Erin for me..." he added.

Kim kissed William on the cheek. "I will...and just to let you know, she's planning on leaving New Jersey too..." she said, slightly surprising William.

"Uh, where is she going?" he asked.

"She's going back home to Pennsylvania...she said she wanted to have a fresh start..." said Kim.

William tried to smile. "Give her a hug from me okay?" he told Kim.

"I will..and you drive safe alright? You're practically crossing the whole country in your car." Kim said.

"Don't worry...I can handle it...and I already have my stops planned out so I won't get too tired." said William before hugging Jim one last time. "Goodbye Jim...I'm gonna miss you guys..."

"You keep in touch okay?" Jimmy said, shaking William's hand before getting into the car.

"I'll text you everytime I make a stop...and you take care of Kim alright?" William said before starting his car.

Jimmy put his hand over Kim's shoulder. "Bye Will...say hello to your folks for us..." he said as William put the car in gear, making sure he's good to go.

"And to Sarah too!" Kim added while waving goodbye to their friend, hoping he gets home safe and sound to California.

The couple decided to go back to the apartment to tell Erin that her ex-boyfriend has already left. They knocked on her bedroom door.

"Erin...he's gone now..." Kim said through the door.

"Okay...thanks..." Erin said from inside her bedroom as she sat on the floor, bowing her head and silently crying once more.

A couple of days after, somewhere in Pasadena, California...

"Mom...I'm home!" William said as he put his backpack on the couch, thankful that he made it home safe after crossing the country for a couple of days.

Penny came out from the kitchen wearing an apron and some oven mitts, giving her son a lovely smile. "Sweetheart...come here and give your mother a kiss!" she said with arms wide open.

William sighed and walked towards his mother, hugging her tight and kissing her cheek, thankful to be finally home. "I'm so stupid mom...I hurt Erin so much..." he said as he began crying on Penny's shoulder.

Penny was saddened with her son's words as she tried to console him. "I'm so sorry sweetie...your sister told me everything that happened..." she said. "Come on...why don't you sit down and relax...I'm almost done in the kitchen." Penny said. "I made your favorite beef and vegetable stew...I'm sure it'll make you feel better." Penny said, smiling at him.

William smiled, thankful for his mother's affection. "Thanks mom..." he said. "But I want to clean up first...I already smell funny..." he said before standing up and heading to the stairs.

"Okay sure..." said Penny.

"Where's the princess anyway?" he asked.

"In her bedroom..." Penny said. "...moping around..."

"Hmm...let me guess...boy problems huh?" William asked, making Penny smile.

"Yeah...boy problems..." said Penny as William went up the stairs, deciding to see his sister first before going to his bedroom. He knocked on Sarah's door, hearing his sister answer from within. "Hey, it's me." he said.

"It's open." Sarah said as William slowly opened the door with Marty darting across the floor, jumping and barking around him, obviously excited to see his big brother again after being away for a long time.

"Hey Marty...I missed you too..." he said as he let the dog sniff and rub his body all over him before going on the bed to sit beside his sister. "Hey sis..." he said, kissing her on her head.

"You smell funny..." Sarah said, smiling at her brother.

"I know...and now I smell like a dog too..." he said, making Sarah laugh a bit.

"Kim told me everything...I'm sorry about Erin..." she said as she leaned her head on her brother's shoulder.

"It's alright...it's my fault anyway...I never should've kept that necklace..." he said as Marty settled on the floor, looking up at them.

"Well, if it makes you feel any better, I'm not doing so good myself...in that department..." Sarah said.

William smiled at her. "I know...mom kinda hinted that to me before I went here..." he said. "...but at least we still have Marty with us...right?" he said.

"Yeah..." Sarah said as she kept her head on her brother's shoulder, thankful that they still had each other. They then heard a knock on the door before Penny and Leonard came in, still dressed in his work clothes.

"Hey guys..." said Leonard as he shook his son's hand, glad to see him safe and sound.

"Hey dad...I'm back." said William.

"Your sister told us everything...I'm sorry about Erin..." said Leonard, lightly tapping his son's shoulder.

"Thanks dad..." William said. "...but I'm here now...ready to start over...I guess..." he said.

Penny sat beside her son while Leonard sat beside his daughter on the bed, consoling them and letting them feel that they are here for them.

"Well, no matter what you do...your mom and I are always gonna be here..." Leonard said.

"and Marty too..." Penny added, making them all laugh,

Sarah bent over and picked up the dog, sitting him on her lap. "Yeah...he's the glue that holds this family together...isn't that right?" she said while rubbing the dog's fur and face.

Marty barked and wiggled his tail at Sarah before licking her face, letting her know that he'll always be there for them.

"I have an idea." said Leonard.

"What's that?" asked Penny.

"We'll have a Star Wars movie marathon tonight...like what we used to do in the olden days...all the popcorn and pizza you can eat and whatever this young princess wants..." said Leonard, hoping his family would go along with his suggestion.

Penny and Sarah looked at each other and sighed, not wanting to argue with Leonard anymore. "Fine...but don't expect me to be awake the whole time!" she said, making her husband laugh.

Leonard then stood up and pulled Penny off the bed, leading her out of the room. "No problem honey...and don't worry, you'll get some of this tonight!" he said while pointing at himself, making Penny laugh.

"You guys are gross!" yelled William and Sarah.

"We know!" the couple yelled back before giggling with each other.

William stood up. "I'm gonna take a shower..." he said as he left Sarah on the bed with Marty.

Sarah looked at Marty and rubbed his belly. "Well...at least we get to eat all the junk food we want tonight..." she said, making the dog excited.

Epilogue

It's been two months since William came back to California...

"Don't look so glum...aren't you glad that you have someone like me who has great fashion sense to help you out in decorating your apartment?" Sarah asked as she walked along William inside the mall.

"Fine...just don't make it too obvious...I don't want my apartment looking like a little girl's summer retreat." William said.

Sarah laughed. "Don't worry big brother...we'll make sure and choose a design that's tasteful and low-key..." she said as she waved her hand at a distance. "Halley...over here!"

William turned his head and saw his ex-girlfriend walking towards them. "Uh...what is she doing here?" he asked his sister.

"I asked her to join us!" Sarah said casually.

"Why?" he asked.

"Why not?" she said as Halley joined them. "Just relax okay!" she told her brother. "We're you waiting for us a long time?" she asked Halley.

"Only for a few minutes." Halley said, before facing William. "Hi Will...it's been a long time..." she said, smiling at him.

"Hi...yeah, it's been a long time..." William said, unable to react to the situation at hand. "Uh...is your boyfriend here with you?" he asked while looking around.

"No...we broke up four months ago..." Hailey said as Sarah looked at them, clearly up to something.

"See? You have nothing to worry about!" Sarah said, pulling William toward the department store. "Come on..." she added as Halley walked up beside him.

"I'm sorry about Erin...Sarah told me everything..." Halley said, making William sigh in disbelief.

"You're such a blabbermouth!" he yelled at his sister, lightly nudging her side.

"Hey...it's not like it's going to be a secret for a long time...right?" Sarah said, obviously teasing her brother and Halley.

"I'm sorry you had to see that." William told Halley.

"It's alright...I mean it's always fun hanging out with the two of you...it's like watching Tom and Jerry..." Halley said before putting her hand around his arm, surprising the young man.

"Uh, what are you doing?" William asked Halley while Sarah giggled lightly, finding the former couple cute and adorable.

"Just relax Will..." Halley said as Sarah pulled out her phone and took a selfie with them.

"I'm gonna remember this day..." said Sarah, giving her brother a goofy smile.

William took a deep breath. "What have I gotten myself into?" he asked out loud as the girls dragged him into the department store, laughing and giggling with each other.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Pennsylvania...

The blood on Erin's face slowly drained as she faced the mirror. She then sat on the bathroom floor and began crying, huddling beside the tub while trying to keep the emotions to herself.

"Oh my god...what am I gonna do now?" she whispered as she looked at her hand, seeing the two lines on the pregnancy test before bowing her head and crying some more.
