AN: Hello, hello! Welcome back for chapter 2, I may have split apart the first few chapters because they ended up being 16-18 pages each which is a bit too long for my liking. Fear not, the story continues! Enjoy!
Truly, Madly, Deeply - Chapter 2
Curtains were drawn as only a streak of sunlight shone through the small gap that was left. The normally cheerful walls of lavender were now tainted in a gloomy gray as the piles of clothing laid scattered throughout the carpeted floor. A new day has started but the fairy that laid in the dimly lit room didn't seem to care. With a ringing from the telephone, a sound she was so familiar with at this point, there was a sigh. Wanda, being curled within plush blankets, pushed them aside to answer.
Finally after being spammed by calls from basically everyone, she of course blocked Juandissimo right away. To her knowledge, he hadn't even come to her house. She thought mainly it was because her dad would skin him alive. Big Daddy didn't know, but she knew Juandissimo didn't want to take the risk if he did. After some thought, Wanda decided to finally pick up when Scarlet and Crystal called. To be fair, she was in the wrong for not speaking with them all this time.
"Hello?"
"Wanda?! Oh my goodness we have been dying to talk to you." Crystal said with Scarlet on the other side of the line.
"I'm sorry for everything." That was all Wanda could say. Awful was an understatement on how she felt. Wanda knew her friends had been plotting to contact her for awhile now but she just wasn't ready to face talking about the reality that is her life with anyone yet. Today all of that would change.
Then it was Scarlet's turn to speak, "Wanda, we understand you. We know what happened."
Wanda was shocked, did Stella go around telling everyone? "You do?"
"Yes. We saw the whole thing! Well, not the whole thing but the part when Juandissimo ran after you when you left and other things. However before you showed up, he was flirting around with so many other girls at the party. He tried to even flirt with Crystal because she already had drunk some of the love juice. I immediately told him to back off and that this was inappropriate since he was with you. Then he moved on but we didn't want to be the ones to tell you that he was starting to flirt with Stella. She had no idea what was going on…" Scarlet explained. "Stella doesn't remember any of it."
Wanda just sighed, she didn't hate Stella because she knew it was the juice's influence but the same excuse doesn't stand for her now ex-boyfriend especially after that explanation. "Is that so? Funny how Juandissimo remembers."
Scarlet then clarified, "I don't think Juandissimo really drank that much."
Crystal piped up, "He's such a womanizer!"
Wanda was seething now as she should've seen this coming from a mile away. Not only was angered by Juandissimo but also herself because she couldn't find the courage to break up with him sooner. Then the painful memory of why she had agreed to his proposal of so-called undying love began to replay in her convoluted mind. 'It's not like you could find love again, Wanda.' How could she have been so ignorant and realized she was still in high school so that statement was ridiculous? Especially, in fairy years she was young! Hell, she had the rest of eternity to settle on the one for her. Wanda didn't care if she met them next week or in a thousand years.
However as these thoughts circulated, she realized that maybe there wasn't anyone and love just wasn't for her. Her only experience of it was abominable and she loathed pretty much every lasting minute of it. Resenting it all, she didn't even want to think about love at the moment. Continuing the conversation, Wanda spoke, "I don't even want to think about him anymore."
"Yeah… You know what? Fuck him and his sexy smile, want to do something with us to get your mind off of this mess?" Crystal asked.
Oh Crystal, she just said whatever was on her mind that Wanda couldn't help but laugh. Although the question had her interest piqued. Getting out of her room would probably be the best medicine, wouldn't it? Wanda answered, "You know… I think that is exactly what I need! Where are we going?"
Scarlet spoke up and made a suggestion, "Hey! How about that one diner on the south side of Fairy World? We used to go there all the time since they have great milkshakes."
Wanda knew which one she was talking about even though she's only been there a handful of times. It was on the older, run down side of town so her father didn't like her going over there too many times when she was younger or even now. However he was at work, therefore unaware of the circumstances. "Yes! I will meet you both there!"
"Sweet, we're excited to see you again, Wanda, we really are." Both sides hung up, as Wanda finally smiled after what seemed like ages. She was going to wear something nice for a change since it's been a while.
Maneuvering through the piles of messy clothing, she dug through her closet to find something she hadn't worn in a while. Most of the apparel she owned were mostly the color of amber. Not that it was her favorite color, she found unique beauty in it. Not many fairies her age fixated on the lively color. Rarely did she wear any other color. That day she decided to wear a nice yellow sundress that went nicely with her earrings and put on the white pearly flats Big Daddy got her for Christmas. Her hair had her signature swirl and she put in a simple low ponytail that flowed beyond her shoulders.
Before she left, she examined for any flaws in her ensemble in her mirror. Satisfied, she poofed to the other side of town where she was met with a wave of nostalgia as she and her friends used to hang around here all the time. The trees of star shaped leaves were fully developed, as the roads were heavier with cracks as they aged. The surrounding bricked buildings were faded in color as rust formed along the metal sidings. This side of town definitely wasn't as unblemished as Fairywood but she couldn't help but feel the nurture of comfort as she floated in the middle of it all. Taking a deep breath, something she hadn't done in a while, she loosened in the summer breeze.
Eventually Crystal and Scarlet made their way to the diner as well and they all finally embraced. Wanda sighed, "I missed you all so much. Thank you for taking me here to cheer me up."
Scarlet smiled, "Of course, Wanda! I knew they had your favorite mint chocolate milkshakes when we came here so I thought it was perfect."
Crystal lightheartedly interfered as she grabbed both of the fairies' hands, "As much as I missed all of us being together, I'm hungry!"
With a jingle from the front door's bell, the three were met with the aroma of mouthwatering condolence. Although the comfort food was greasy, Wanda still couldn't resist. Also she was a sucker for sweets so that prospected milkshake was an added bonus.
A blue-haired fairy approached with a greeting, "Hello, how many for today?"
Crystal retaliated with a smile, "Table for three please!"
He nodded as they were immediately seated in a booth near the windows, which was something Wanda secretly appreciated. The diner, in her modest opinion, was homey but radiated in color as the seating of the booths beamed with bright magenta as the floor had a checkered pattern in soft violets. Most restaurants in Fairy World shared this color scheme but with a modernized twist. The interior hadn't seemed to be renovated in ages in what she could assume was due to budget cuts. That was something that she didn't mind.
Their orders were taken quickly as Wanda just ordered a simple mint chocolate milkshake and a burger with veggies, her personal favorites. Crystal and Scarlet ordered burgers along with their chocolate shakes.
After a while of catching up with pleasant conversation her friend's orders arrived first oddly enough. The waiter looked over at Wanda, "Sorry about the wait on yours, we will get someone to bring your order out shortly."
Wanda just smiled, "Not a problem. Take your time."
Crystal took a bite and decided to start some conversation, "I don't mean to bring it up but I just have to know… Has "you know who" called you since?"
Wanda just nodded, keeping mental images of him out of her mind, "Yeah but I blocked him. He doesn't deserve any more of my time."
Scarlet replied, "You're so right! I can't believe we thought that backstabbing, self centered loser was right for you. That day when he asked you out, he was practically on his knees asking us to help him. That should've been a sign he was desperate because he knew he wasn't good enough for you. We only agreed because we actually found it adorable that he claimed that he was in love with you."
Crystal added more to this, "Oh my gosh, he was super annoying that day! He kept talking about how sexy he was and that he deserved your love. He should've known that Wanda Fairywinkle is one of a kind who doesn't care about looks."
"That's okay, I only said yes because I thought that love he had for me was real." She paused, putting her words into motion, "I should've known he only cared about having me as a trophy instead of wanting to get to know me… I'm such an idiot with love, I still don't know what it feels like." Wanda explained, her head in her hands, arms on the table. Hearing about how he was acting that day was definitely something she'd wished she'd heard about sooner.
They both just nodded agreeing with her point. Crystal looked next to her and laid a hand on Wanda's shoulder, "I heard when love is true, you'll know."
This made Wanda smile again, this is exactly what she has been thinking about all this time. "You're so right."
"Woah! AHHH!" a sudden scream followed.
Out of nowhere, there she felt a cold splash of liquid with chunks. Within that moment her mind was completely scrambled as she could no longer see. With a wipe from her eyes, she found whip cream. Wanda quickly noticed that the unknown liquid was actually the creamy mint ice cream from her milkshake she was waiting on. She heard a thud as well as the gasps of Scarlet and Crystal. In confusion, Wanda raised her gaze, keeping her head lowered as she was greeted with viridescent eyes, which were stuck wide with shock. Her cheeks started to grow hot, but she didn't know if it was from embarrassment or not.
"I- I'm so sorry! Are you okay?"
All she could do was blink and take a clearer look at their face. They were completely doused in mint chocolate just as much as she was but with a swift movement of their hair, their face was revealed. The culprit of the shake spill was a boy with an acne-peppered face. He had fluffy green hair that fell just above his eyes of the same color. More of the ice cream started to drip down her face so all she could do was nod softly with a shy smile, "Yes, I'm okay. Are you?"
Then he gave a boyish smile with his bracketed teeth, "Yes… I am, I am more than okay." He paused, staring at her, "I mean! I am just happy you're okay!"
Wanda was taken by surprise at this as she began to feel her cheeks glow even more than before. The two exchanged shared soft pleased looks before he broke this trance, "Um! Let me get this cleaned up for you."
Then he scurried off as Wanda couldn't help but giggle. Well that was something certainly new. Someone else asked her if she was okay for a change besides her best friends who just witnessed the whole encounter. Deep down inside, she felt something new as well but again didn't know what.
Crystal quickly grabbed the napkins from their container on the table and wiped the whip cream and minty liquid off of her. Scarlet did the same for the table top.
Their other waiter finally came back, frowning as he sighed, "I am so sorry about all that, ladies, we are still training him… but you all get a free shake, on the house."
She had a feeling that "on the house" actually meant they were taking some of the poor boy's pay out. Wanda beamed and replied, "That's okay! We actually have somewhere to be so he can keep his pay."
The waiter just nodded, "Well if you're so sure. We will still take that wasted milkshake off the bill, thank you."
The girls bidded their goodbyes as they floated out of the diner. Wanda lingered, looking back at the doors, the world felt still as if it was just her and the restaurant. Then it shifted to her being in the restaurant with that boy with the green hair. He knelt down on one knee and raised the same mint chocolate milkshake up to her. He gave his cute smile again as she giggled. Suddenly the color green seemed more appealing than just being associated with chilled mint ice cream.
"Uh, Wanda?" Scarlet said. "Are you alright?"
Her trance was broken as she turned back to her friends, "Hm?"
Crystal smirked, "You're still smiling, I guess coming here really did cheer you up, huh? Even though your milkshake got spilled all over you."
Wanda immediately fixed herself, "Oh hush, I'm just happy. Besides, it wasn't that big of a deal anyways, it was an honest mistake."
After the whole incident was over, she couldn't help but think of how nice it was of the boy to show his immediate concern. Sure the gesture was small and did spill a milkshake all over her, she couldn't help but find it sweet. She spent all of her time pleasing everyone and for a moment there she felt a sudden shift. Maybe she would come back here again but alone.
Even though she just met him and only knew his name by stealing a quick glance at his nametag. There was something in her stomach that fluttered when she thought about it and she didn't know what it was. But there was at least something she did know.
The source of her happiness was named Cosmo.
