Chapter 60: Soul Society Invasion... Again

(Que Story OP – Hello Sleepwalkers "Hyakkiyakou")

Bothersome and troubling could be words going through Ruby's head as she and Ichigo were racing over the Sereitei for Kariya and the Bounts that have infiltrated the Soul Society. One part of her mind found it morbidly hilarious how Soul Society was in an 'apocalyptic' crisis yet again. Turns out that Kariya and the Bounts were not trying to make a gateway to Hueco Mundo to feed on its infinite reishi. That was only the half-truth; the rest of the story went they wanted to take revenge on Soul Society for sentencing their kind to death. They had sacrificed Yoshino to create a swarm of dolls that gathered reiatsu of the living to create the portal and Uryu's Quincy powers to activate it. While Ruby was not going to let them basically blow up what amounted to heaven in this world, she could not but blame the Soul Society itself for causing its mess in the first place.

Ruby, Ichigo, Senna, Chad, Orihime, a powered Uryu, and the rest of Team RWBY followed after them into the Soul Society accompanied by officers from Soul Society including Rukia and Rangiku to investigate the Bount situation. Once in Soul Society, they made a rendezvous at the house of the Shiba clan to figure out a plan of attack as well as inform Kukaku of the situation. Just arriving at the home caused a wide range of reaction from the newcomers. Weiss gaped like a fish when she saw the banner held up by arms while Yang gave a shaky smile but sharing a sweat drop with Blake. Senna was...

"Oh my god, those banner arms are so awesome!" Senna cheered, her eyes sparkling.

"Yeah, that is certainly... something." Yang commented dryly.

"Who..." Mumbled Weiss, pointing a shaking finger at the Shiba home. "Who the hell is okay with this travesty!?"

In a split second, Ruby moved in buzz of sonido and reappeared behind Weiss to clamp Weiss' mouth shut. Blue eyes met Ruby's crimson of her Arrancar form, but were disturbed by the haunted look in them.

"If there's one thing you should not do, it's insulting Kukaku with her testy temper." Ruby said. "Especially since we need her to get our bearings for the night before she blows it all up. Again."

With a defeated sighs, Weiss held in her rant and they walked up to the entrance of the Shiba manor. The following night was interesting to say the least.

(That night)

"Idiot, what the hell do you mean you were stuck working at a convenience store?" Roared the matriarch of the Shiba clan.

Suffering under Kukaku's raging rant was her little brother Ganju literally pinned to the floor by her foot stomped on his face. That was the sight the group of teenagers were greeted to when they were invited into the Shiba manor, now settled in a line sitting on their knees. Those who have already been to the home of Kukaku put on straight faces at the scene going on before them. The ones who have come here for the first time had more expressive reactions. Weiss couldn't say a word from her gaping with only a creeking sound exiting her mouth. Blake had her cat ears perked to full alert, as if she had to bolt away at any second now and exemplified by her golden wide eyes. In complete contrast, Yang and Senna had wide smiles on their faces.

"I think I have finally found someone who can dig it with me." Yang commented.

"I don't know why you were so worried, Ruby-chan." Senna said. "This Kukaku is amazing.

This was exactly one of Ruby's fears. She did not need Senna or gods forbid Yang taking up on Kukaku's literal explosive antics. Yang already lost one arm already!

(Present)

Meanwhile, the Gotei 13 held a meeting on the rising situation with the Bounts as informed by the shinigami they sent to investigate on Earth. The enormous walls came down yet again upon the Sereitei to separate itself from the Rukon districts. It was decided that Captain Hitsugaya and Squad 10 of dealing with the Bounts, but it was a standard by Head Captain Yamamoto that all Bount intruders were to be eradicated.

The next day in the morning, Ruby, Ichigo, and respective company were on the hunt for the vampires. With the Bounts in the Sereitei, they were also endlessly gaining more power by absorbing the reishi that literally made up everything in the heavenly world. It would be how they would track them by following the signs of their absorption of the surrounding matter as well as Ruby's acute Hollow senses and the Mod Soul's tracker. So it was decided they would have to split up to cover more ground with Ruby and Ichigo paired up, Chad with Nobu accompanied by Blake and Senna, Orihime with Yang and Weiss led by Kurodo. Uryu went off by himself, not even accepting having anyone accompanying him. Rukia went off to report to her squad carrying Ririn in case any Bounts come into her way where Rukia would then raise her spiritual pressure to alert everyone.

For the second time, Ruby sighed exasperatedly in her shunpo flight alongside Ichigo. She had this awful feeling that Soul Society getting itself into trouble via past events was going to be a trope in the future. Every day, Ruby will gladly fight to stop senseless destruction, but dammit she wanted more peace and quiet with her hunky boyfriend!

Her inner monolog was interrupted when she and Ichigo sensed Rukia's spiritual pressure, as depleted as it was, suddenly spike. They wasted no time in homing in on it, arriving in time to see Byakuya save his little sister from the Bount known as Yoshi from slicing her up. Noticing the new arrivals and one of the captains of the Gotei 13, she had made her escape and across the Rukon district and Sereitei were a series of explosions.

Rukia was returned to the Shiba household to recover from her injuries, and now Byakuya joined them personally in hunting down the Bounts. It wasn't until the coming night that progress was made. Kariya himself was spotted in a forest in a far off Rukon district.

(Ruby, Ichigo, and Byakuya vs Kariya)

Both Byakuya, Ichigo, and Ruby descended upon the leader of the Bounts, but despite outnumbered by foes on par or stronger than his own Kariya didn't bat an eye. The ensuing fight of Arrancar and shinigami against the singular Bount was fierce enough to level the entire forest, but Kariya healed from even grievous wounds and even increasing his strength to that of Ichigo's by absorbing the surrounding reishi.

Getsuga Tenshos and Ceros powerful enough to scar the land pushed back Kariya, but only managing to to deal bleeding flesh wounds on his body. When the blast died down, Kariya emerged slightly injured but was healing from gathering reishi around him. A buzz of sound came from behind with the appearance of Ruby in a motion to stab her zanpakuto forth. The tip of her blade however did not make flesh halted by whirling grey barrier that was actually highly concentrated wind constantly surrounding the Bount's body. Sparks flew off as if her zanpakuto was being grinded.

"Interesting thing about the element of wind." Kariya commented half-heartedly with a smirk. "Alone, it can be harmless from a gentle breeze to maybe a powerful gust. However, if concentrated to a degree it can serve as the greatest armor or the sharpest blade."

Ruby was not deterred and pressed on the attack. She backed up in a flip going above Kariya and smashed down her heel like a hammer. Kariya this time rose both of his arms above him to block the blow as blunt trauma was one of his wind armor's weaknesses. Where his arms and Ruby's heel met there was almost a solid grey wall of highly condensed winds. A wince appeared on Ruby's face feeling Kariya's winds digging into her Hierro and Aura.

The next second, Ruby disengaged disappearing in the buzz of sonido. Right before Kariya and a part of the forest was flooded with slicing sakura petals of Senbonsakura Kageyoshi. Its wielder, Byakuya stood unmoved by the sea of sakura petals just a meter away from the Bount's position.

"Oi!" Exclaimed Ichigo from the air away from Senbonsakura Kageyoshi's path of destruction, brandishing the dual khyber blades of Zangetsu. "You weren't trying to hit my girlfriend with that, were you!?"

"You are both in the way." Byakuya said neutrally, his usual emotionless facade not even breaking.

Ichigo gave a fury-filled scowl at Byakuya, but immediately turned his attention back to the fight. A buzz of sonido signaled Ruby's appearance on the other side, her zanpakuto held in a low stance with the pale blade pointed angled upward. In this entire fight, they had put their all into offense not just to break Kariya's wind defense. Any injuries that are made from a simple scratch to a gash down the Bount's body can be healed by absorbing Soul Society's reishi. There were definite signs of him bleeding from cuts that have already closed. In short, Kariya like the other Bounts was basically immortal as he claimed.

Ruby, Ichigo, and Byakuya's response went along the lines of making him prove that immortality. That meant laying into him in quite the brutal fashion. The pause of the battle was broken by the flood of Byakuya's sakura petals lifting Kariya up in the air. Thousands upon thousands of invisible blades on the assault broke through Kariya's wind defense causing bloody slices across his body. The same flood of sakura petals then directed Kariya to crash back down to the ground.

Before he could get a chance to heal, Ichigo and Ruby were upon him striking from both front and back. In response, Kariya gathered ripping winds over his arms and deflected the two strikes simultaneously and let the pair pass him by. The hybrids were not done as Ichigo gathered his reiatsu into both Zangetsu blades and Ruby went through hand motions of a Kido spell.

"Getsuga Jujisho!"

"Hado #33: Sokatsui!"

A cross of two Getsuga Tenshos charged down Kariya from the back while Ruby unleashed a wave of blue fire from her palm. Kariya widened his eyes in alarm and put his wind defense at full power while at the same time absorbing the reishi from at his feet to provide more power. When the two attacks made impact, there was a great explosion creating winds strong enough to tear off trees and pure force to summon a huge crater. Byakuya, Ichigo, and Ruby escaped from the blast zone into the air with their respective speed abilities and returned back to the ground before the edge of a crater.

Once the dust settled, Kariya was revealed at the very center of the crater on his knees. His entire front was covered in blood with deep cuts in his forearms and blood dripping from his mouth. The fires from the Hado spell burned away at some of Kariya's coat and pants, showing the skin was also burned as well. Despite these horrendous injuries, Kariya maintained a small smile directed at the hybrid pair.

"Impressive teamwork." Kariya complimented, forcing himself to his feet. "I really believed you were trying to kill me there. The power between you two is quite frightening."

'I've only seen that kind of power from Vasto Lorde.' Kariya mentally added, almost cringing at the very bare encounters he had of those monsters of raw power when they came to the living world... and how he barely escaped with his life from the one engagement he dared to do so.

The Bount's opponents were about to jump back into action until their eyes were caught by a blinding white light. They all looked up to the air and widened at the huge blast of blue-white reishi coming down like a meteor. It crashed down into the crater, just several meters away from Kariya and creating a massive dust cloud filling the entire area.

The sound of footsteps reached their ears, but it was from none of them. Coming out from the dust cloud was a bruenette woman with tanned skin, sharp facial features, and red lips. In fact, she bore a striking resemblance to the deceased Yoshino. She wore the shihaksho of the standard shinigami, but also the white haori belonging to the leaders of the Gotei 13. There was heavy silence as Bount, shinigami, and the hybrids were staring at the woman until it was suddenly broken.

"Who the hell are you!?" Ichigo exclaimed. "Don't you see that it's dangerous here."

"Real subtle." Ruby mumbled under her breath.

"Is this how shinigami have become since I've been gone?" The woman mused. "How vulgar."

"Who are you?" Kariya demanded, a rare tone of rage seeping into his voice.

"Do you not recognize me?" The woman said, a smile directed to Kariya. "I am Rantao, creator of the Bounts."

While Byakuya's face was unchanged, Ruby and Ichigo showed their shock by the widening of their eyes. They heard of Rantao, the head researcher responsible for the creation of the Bounts from Yoruichi. However, they expected Rantao to have passed long ago and not be alive to this day, and certainly not look suspiciously like Yoshino.

'Ooh, I can already see Uryu having a field day with this.' Ruby thought.

"You... you are the one that condemned us, the Bounts!?" Kariya growled in open anger.

"Ara, you are surprisingly emotional." Rantao commented. "So are you going to kill me for what I have done?"

"Ain't happening!"

In an instant, Ichigo appeared in front of Rantao to guard her from Kariya. The white and black khyber blades of Zangetsu were held in a stance to oppose any direct approach from the Bount and his white tail waved out menacingly.

"Whether you are Rantao or not, I can't let you die while I can do something about that." Ichigo stated, eyeing down Kariya. "So you can forget about any funny business you want with her."

To his surprise, Kariya chuckled. "Who said I was going to kill her here? No, I want her to live, to see Soul Society crushed by our hands. When all she knows is in ruin, then she can have my permission to die."

"That ain't happening," Ruby's voice sounded behind Kariya after a buzz of sonido, "because you are going down here."

Kariya was just in the midst of bringing the powers of his Doll, but Ruby was already in mid-swing intent of cutting down his back. At the same time, Byakuya's flood of invisible swords gleaming like sakura petals came down to drown him. It would be his defeat; they were sure of it. Yet at the last second, Byakuya and Ruby were forced back as the area was filled by a rain of familiar metal balls. Ichigo pulled Rantao away in a shunpo, and looking back at Kariya he found that the giant man known as Koga was now beside him.

"Distract them, Dalk!" Koga commanded.

The rain of metal balls increased in intensity, blinding their view of the Bounts as they redirected their attention using their speed abilities to avoid the barrage. When it finally ended, the Bounts were gone and with all of the energy from their battle still in the air it was near impossible for Ruby to get a clear scent. Her wolf ears twitched in irritation and she bore her crimson eyes upon Rantao.

"You know, if you could've just waited, I don't know, a few gods-damned minutes we would actually have beaten right now!?" Exclaimed Ruby. "Now we have to start this whole asinine chase again. Thank you very much, hag!"

At least Rantao had the audacity to look a little sheepish, but it was mostly because she thought she would never encounter two souls that have animal appendages.

(Time-Skip)

Following Kariya's disappearance, everyone from the living world including Team RWBY and now joined by that of JN(P)R had to put down a riot instigated by the Bounts themselves. While the newly arrived Ren, Jaune, and Nora went off to stop the insurrections from the Rukon districts, the others were on the trail that was presumably the location of the Bounts' hideout.

This is the scene found in the clearing in the forest where there stood Ruby, Ichigo, Blake, Chad, Orihime, Weiss, Senna, Yang, and the Mod Souls and from the Sereitei was Captain Hitsugaya and his lieutenant Rangiku. Speaking of the latter, Ruby felt her heart freeze when her eyes beheld both Rangiku and her sister Yang in her the same view. This was worse when she thought of Yoruichi-shishou and Yang meeting. From her small meetings with the strawberry blonde, busty shinigami, nothing good was to come if those two meet actually meet. It was already too late when Yang came on the scene and her lilac eyes met the gaze of Rangiku.

'Oh no...' Ruby lamented in her head.

A smile made its way on Yang's face as she looked over Rangiku's appearance. "Looking good. Can't keep these puppies too tight, am I right?"

"Finally, someone gets it!" Rangiku replied. "These outfits are usually a bit tight, and I see that you aren't afraid to flaunt what you've got."

'Oh my god, it's happening.' Ruby thought as a dark atmosphere hung over her.

As for Toshiro was also hearing this conversation and noticing key similarities betwen Rangiku and Yang... well, it was safe to say that he was considering going through seppuku to avoid the coming torture. That or in a very small corner of his mind kill them both before they can do enough damage.

But there was time for that later, especially for the present situation. At the location of the hideout was the ex-shinigami Maki Ichinose to meet them. Despite facing multiple foes including a captain, his face did not waver in fear. In fact, he did not hesitate to stand his ground and draw out his zanpakuto.

"None of you will make it to Kariya-sama." Maki stated in absolute resolve. "Flash and Burst, Nijigasumi."

Maki raised his zanpakuto above his head and the blade shined an intense light that blinded everyone to his opposition. Senna did not waste in summoning her zanpakuto having faced the ex-shinigami before, and used the winds to surround her as a detection system. Not even using spiritual senses could find the man once Maki unleashed the blinding light of his zanpakuto. Hitsugaya was the one to make a mostly blind charge with his zanpakuto pierced forward to where Maki was supposed to be. In response, the light zanpakuto intensified its light to the maximum degree, filling the whole area with brightness all around to not even leave shadows. Even his spiritual pressure had disappeared. They could not even see their friends, and their only reliable sense was their hearing.

"Ichi-kun, Yang, Blake, Weiss, are you alright?!" Ruby exclaimed, her wolf ears trained for the voices of her friends.

"We're fine." Blake responded, who was the closest to Ruby where the Arrancar felt Blake just behind her.

"Too bright!" Complained Yang, her eyes refusing to open in this bright light. "Damn, I should've brought some shades."

"Now is not the time to be joking, Yang!" Weiss shouted, both Myrtenaster and Asauchi raised at her sides to defend herself from attacks.

"Hitsugaya-taichou, are you alright?" That was Renji.

"I'm fine." Hitsugaya replied calmly.

They didn't even hear the rushing footsteps until it was too late. Senna shouted out a warning for Chad to look out, but it was not enough to stop the coming attack. Just before Ichinose was going to make a fatal slash down Chad's back, it was intercepted at the last moment. An explosion of spiritual pressure flooded the area, and the bright light was washed away.

Their eyes automatically tracked to the sound of clashing steel. Just behind where Chad stood was Ichinose's zanpakuto inches from getting into contact of his shoulder. However, his zanpakuto was held back by another. As their eyes trailed down the blade the owner, three of those pairs widened in such shock. When their eyes landed on the long red hair and green eyes, Weiss, Yang, and Blake felt their hearts skip a beat and their chest choking itself from the sheer disbelief.

"Well," Pyrrha Zaraki spoke with a smile, "looks like I was right when I sensed such high spiritual pressures here and find a traitor if I am not mistaken."

"Pyr..." Weiss choked on her words, tears gathering in her blue eyes and shared by both Yang and Blake to see one of their dear friends alive again, "Pyrrha..."

Pyrrha Zaraki is back! I hope this chapter is okay since I wanted to skip a lot of the plot till I got here. Expect the same for the coming future until the Bount Arc is done and then we can get started for the return to Remnant in Volume 7/8 and then Fade to Black as well.

You know looking back at the show, Soul Society seems to always have some sort of impending destruction because of past transgressions and it is quite alarming how often it keeps happening. Makes you wonder how would Soul Society last without Ichigo? Or a better question how it still stands after 1000 years of possibly the same thing happening over and over?
