First off, I want to thank anyone who's taken the time to read this and favorited/followed. It means a lot.
Moving on. I had a thought at work today. And it just kind of led to this. Mainly because I'm convinced that a pregnant Pepa and Julieta are nothing but pure chaos.
Enjoy~
Bruno walked out of his tower. He breathed in, filling his lungs with fresh morning air. The air in his room was dry, which he figured had something to do with the large amount of sand. Quietly, he stalked past Julieta's door, then his mother's. He frowned as he walked past Pepa's room, noticing the small stream of water pooling out from under her door.
From the dark blue color of the sky, he knew it was early morning. Which meant the only other person who should be awake was Julieta. She rose with the sun, always wanting to get a start on cooking for the day. Unlike them, Pepa wasn't a morning person. Not to mention, her room almost always kept her storms contained. He could count on one hand the times that Pepa's weather had been too much for the room to handle. None of those instances were good.
Something had to be wrong.
Did something happen to the baby?
Both of his siblings were pregnant. Each expecting their first child. Julieta only had two months left of her pregnancy, which left Pepa with four months. Bruno knew that Félix would have gotten someone if that were the case. Ever since Pepa told him they were expecting, he watched her like a hawk.
But what if something happened to him and he couldn't tell anyone?
Reaching for her doorknob, he decided it was his job to check on her. Just to make sure that she was, in fact, alright.
A large rumble of thunder shook the door. "You did what?!" Bruno froze. The redhead sounded absolutely livid.
"I'm sorry! It was a mistake." To say he was stunned would be an understatement. Pepa yelled at Félix. Sure, the two bickered a few times a day. But bickering, Bruno learned, came with being married. It rarely lasted longer than a few minutes. Félix had a way of soothing his sister's wild temper. Not once could Bruno remember them having an actual fight.
Even from his side of the door, he could feel the tension in the room. Thunder rumbled again. The stream of water steadily getting larger. "How could you do this to me?"
He should leave.
Their argument wasn't any of his business.
"I'm sorry mi amor. It was a lapse in judgement. I- I wasn't thinking straight."
"That's your excuse?!"
Did he hear that right? What meant nothing? Realization dawned on him as his brother-in-law spoke again. "It meant nothing!"
Félix had cheated on Pepa.
"I thought you loved me." Pepa, sounded so broken. For the first time in a long time, Bruno felt angry. He knew how much Pepa loved Félix. He thought that Félix felt the same. After all, they'd been together for over a decade.
"I do, amor. I really do. Please, it was an accident." Félix pleaded.
"I need some space."
"Very well. But I promise. I will make it up to you."
Bruno panicked as the doorknob began to turn. Quickly, with a little help from Casita, he made it around the corner to his tower. He pressed himself up against the wall, hoping Félix wouldn't notice him. He listened as Félix's footsteps faded. Taking a deep breath, he composed himself.
His mind raced a mile a minute. Should he go to Pepa? Should he just stay out of it? Maybe he should let her come to him. He needed advice.
But, who could he ask? Pepa was clearly out of the question. His mother? No, she adored Félix. She probably wouldn't even believe him. Shaking his head, he knew there was only one answer. One person who would be honest, and give him advice. The only person he could trust with this information.
His older sister.
Bruno shuffled into the kitchen. Just as he thought, Julieta stood at one of the counters. She hummed happily to herself as she rolled dough out. Agustín stood beside her, watching her work.
Agustín noticed him first. He offered him a smile. "Buenos días, Bruno." His smiled faded as he noticed the worried look on the seer's face. "Are you okay?"
Bruno shook his head. He wanted to speak with Julieta, but he didn't account for his other brother-in-law. Normally, he didn't wake until after the sun rose. Deciding it would be better to tell them both, Bruno spoke. "I think we might have a problem."
"What is it?"
"I think Félix cheated on Pepa."
The rolling pin stopped. Julieta looked at Bruno and blinked. Surely, she heard him wrong. "Come again?"
Agustín let out a chuckle. "You're joking, right?"
"No, I'm telling you. I heard them arguing this morning. He just kept apologizing, telling her it was an accident and that it'd never happen again." Bruno explained. Agustín watched as his wife's grip on her rolling pin tightened. Her knuckles turning a deadly shade of white. "Pepa sounded devastated."
"You're sure?"
"I am. She even told him that she needed space."
Félix and Pepa were practically inseparable. For her to ask him to leave, could only mean one thing. Bruno spoke the truth. The taller man adjusted his glasses. Julieta stared at the half-rolled dough in front of her. An uncomfortable silence filled the kitchen. None of them spoke as each of them processed the information they were given.
"A-are we going to do something about it?"
"You're damn right I'm going to do something about it." Julieta growled. Ripping her apron over her head, she tossed it to the side. Casita produced a hook, catching the apron before moving it over to its spot on the wall by the counter.
"Hold on, Juli. Maybe it's a misunderstanding. I mean, after all Félix worships the ground Pepa walks on. I just can't see it. No offense Bruno." Bruno shrugged, taking no offense. He understood why they wouldn't believe him. In all honesty, if he hadn't heard it for himself, he never would have believed it.
"Then let's find out."
Both men shared an unsure look. "What do you mean?"
"If he did cheat, then he'd run back to whoever he cheated with." Julieta crossed her arms, face set with determination. She would get to the truth. If it did happen? If he had broken Pepa's heart? Not even God himself would save Félix from her wrath.
Somehow, the trio managed to catch up to Félix. They stayed far enough back to not bring attention to themselves. They trailed Félix for almost twenty minutes. Nothing seemed out of the usual. He walked around the town before finding a spot on one of the empty benches.
Maybe they had overreacted.
They heard a feminine voice call out his name. Félix rose from his seat, walking towards one of the houses. Standing in the doorway, a young waving ecstatically. He waved back, walking up to her house. Throwing her arms around him, she pulled him into a hug. They heard Félix laugh as he entered the house.
Or, maybe not.
"I'm going to kill him." Julieta hissed. Spinning around, she stalked down the road away from the house. Agustín and Bruno shared a look before running after her. "Juli! Wait! Where are you going?"
The pregnant woman didn't bother slow her pace, knowing that both men would easily be able to catch up to her. "I'm going back to Casita. Once Félix comes back, I'm going to make him regret everything."
"Juli, you're seven months pregnant. What are you even going to do?"
The healer stopped so quickly Bruno almost ran into her. "I'm going to break his hands. Then I'll heal him with the nastiest food I can make. Once he's all healed up, I'm going to break his hands again."
Neither Agustín or Bruno knew what to say. Julieta had always been the calm one. The rational one. Sure, she protected her siblings, but this was a side to her that they didn't know existed. Bruno figured it was the hormones, but he didn't dare say it out loud. He learned his lesson the last time.
"She's mad." Bruno said as he watched his sister head for their home once more.
Agustín gave him an unamused look. "You think?" Shaking his head, he followed his wife. Maybe, just maybe, he could reason with her.
Three pairs of eyes watched as Félix entered the house.
"Hola!" Félix greeted as he noticed his in-laws. Julieta sat on one of the large stuffed chairs, rolling pin in hand. Agustín and Bruno stood on either side of the chair. None of them looked happy to see him. Which, struck him as odd considering everything had been fine yesterday. "Is something going on?"
"I don't know Félix. Why don't you tell us?" Julieta snapped. Fixing him with an even angrier glare.
Félix shifted uncomfortably and the sudden change in his familia. The way they sat in front of him reminded him vaguely of one of the books he just recently finished reading. The book had been interesting enough, mainly about a mobster family that terrorized a small town. He remembered the part well, one of the informants had made a huge mistake, and a few of the family members decided that they would 'take care' of the problem. "I'm not sure what you mean?"
"You're not sure?"
Félix was completely unsettled at Julieta's tone. He couldn't think of a single thing that he'd done that would invoke such wrath from the eldest. "Did I do something wrong?"
"Something wrong?!"
"Julieta, let me handle this." Bruno said as he placed a hand on his seething sister's shoulder. Stress wasn't good for her baby. Turning his attention back to Félix. "I heard your fight with Pepa this morning."
"Our fight?" The shorter man still had no idea what they were trying to accomplish by cornering him.
"Don't play dumb with us Félix." Julieta sneered. She stood from her seat and closed the distance between them. She poked him in the shoulder, hard. "We saw you in town today, at that woman's house."
"You mean Marianne's?"
"So, you were there!"
"Yeah, but-"
"What's going on here?" Pepa yawned as she walked down the steps, rubbing some of the sleep out of her eyes. "What are you three doing?"
"Don't worry, Pep. We've got this handled." Bruno assured as he moved from his spot by the chair and placed a hand on her shoulder.
Pepa gave them all a confused look. She honestly had no idea what was happening. She heard Julieta yell from her room. So, she decided to investigate. From her position though, they seemed to be ganging up on her Félix. The thought of that alone made a small cloud form over her. "You have what handled exactly?"
Félix didn't need the gift of prophecy to know that things were going to get... interesting... if he didn't clear things up. He held up his hands in surrender. "I think there's been a misunderstanding."
"Misunderstanding?! You call cheating on my sister a misunderstanding?! Don't even try to deny it, Bruno heard you two fighting this morning!"
"Wait." Pepa looked between the three, a serious look on her face. "You three think our fight was about Félix cheating on me?"
His older sister had just thrown him under the bus. He was definitely in trouble now. Bruno put a hand behind his head, rubbing his neck awkwardly. "Well, yeah. You sounded pretty upset about it. And he just kept apologizing about it and saying it wouldn't happen again."
The cloud disappeared in an instant. Pepa's hands flew to her mouth as she burst out laughing. She didn't mean to offend them, but the whole situation just made her laugh. The three stared at her. After a few minutes, Pepa wiped away the tears. Taking a deep breath, she explained herself. "I'm sorry, I'm not laughing at you. I promise. Look, Félix didn't cheat on me."
"B-but the fight this morning?" Bruno stuttered.
Félix laughed, patting him on the back. It all made sense to him now. "It was nothing like that, bro. I ate her last piece of chocolate last night."
"You got that upset about a piece of chocolate?"
Pepa shrugged. "I think it's the hormones."
Julieta watched as Félix took his place beside his wife. "And the lady you hugged?"
"Is Marianne. She's my prima. She makes the best chocolates in town." Félix explained. "Which reminds me." Pulling a small wrapped package out from behind his back, he handed it to Pepa. "These are for you, mi amor. Hopefully, I am forgiven."
Pepa leaned down, giving him a kiss. "Very much so. Te amo."
