First off, I want to thank anyone who's favorited/followed this! I'm glad y'all are actually enjoying this!
Secondly, I've thrown together two of my headcanons here. Firstly being that Pepa is in constant fear of hurting someone when she's thundering. My second is that whenever Pepa totally loses control, her eye glow like Bruno's.
Enjoy~
Pepa opened her eyes, blinking to adjust to the dimly lit area. Looking around, she realized she stood just outside of her home. Looking over the house, she instantly knew something was wrong.
Casita was always happy to see any of the house occupants. It always greeted them with a warm welcome when they returned home. But not this time. The normally brightly colored house appeared to be colorless. Each of its colors faded to different shades of gray. The vines and plants that littered the outside, now lay dead. Dark gray clouds swirled around the sky outside, blocking out the sun.
"Félix?" Pepa called out as she pushed open the door. The house looked as eerie on the inside as it had the outside. A low fog hung around the tiled floors. No sounds could be heard, which only began to worry the redhead more.
"Félix?"
"Bruno?"
"Julieta?
Silence. Only silence. She could feel the pit in her stomach growing. She had searched everywhere. Each room she searched turned up nothing. No sign of her family. No sign of anything. Racking her brain, she tried to think of anywhere they could possibly be.
"Anyone?"
It was obvious that Casita sat empty. If they weren't at home, she knew her family could be found in the village below. Walking towards the courtyard, she started to head for the town. As she passed by, something caught her attention.
Moving closer, she could feel her heart stop. Laying in the center of the courtyard, on the dull colored tiles was Félix. For a second, Pepa wondered if he had managed to fall asleep. His eyes were closed. He looked rather peaceful.
Too peaceful.
"Félix!" Pepa called out, landing beside him. Gently, she shook his shoulder, trying to wake her fiancé. Her eyes frantically searched for some sign of life. Instead, she found nothing. Panic seized her heart as tears blurred her vision. "Someone, help! Julieta!"
Four pairs of footsteps slowly approached from behind. "I can't help the dead." Pepa turned to the coldness of her sister's voice. Julieta, Bruno, Alma, and Agustín stood behind Pepa. No one made an attempt to move. Each of them fixing her with cold glares. The healer looked between her sister and Félix. "You killed him."
"I-I didn't." She tried to argue. She would never hurt Félix. "I came in and found him like this."
"Who else has the power to do something like this?!" Her brother's voice growled as he pointed to the still form on the ground.
"N-no. I didn't do anything!" Pepa cried. Looking back to Félix, she gasped. His dark skin was marred with jagged scars and burns. Pepa let out a sob as she backed away, hands covering her mouth. A large thundercloud hung over her head.
"You did." Julieta sneered as she walked closer. She gestured to the lightning that struck the ground all around them. "You're nothing but a monster. A hazard to everyone around you!"
"No! I'd never hurt anyone!" Pepa pleaded, tears racing down her face.
"Oh yeah?" Bruno growled as he took his place beside the others. They circled around her, slowly forcing her back into the corner. Bruno pointed at Félix. "What about him? Your hurt him."
Pepa turned to her mother. Surely, she'd believe that she was innocent. "Mamá?"
Alma shook her head. "I warned you. I told you that you must control your powers. But you didn't listen."
"Félix died, because of you."
Félix hummed to himself as he walked through the center of town, wrapped gift in his hand. Hand-made chocolates from his cousin always cheered Pepa up.
Why did she need cheering up?
It happened almost a week ago. Pepa had struck him with lightning. It had been an accident, and entirely his fault, of course. They had gotten separated while looking for things for their wedding. After a few minutes, he found her. Pepa didn't notice him, so when he wrapped her in a hug, it startled her.
And when you scare Pepa, you get lightning.
It wasn't a big shock at all. Just a small bolt from the cloud above her head. It struck the middle of his arm. If he hadn't seen it, he wouldn't even have known he'd gotten struck. It felt no different than any of the static shocks he's gotten from doing his clothes.
It devastated Pepa. Instantly, the cloud grew darker and poured rain. He tried to tell her he was fine, but she wouldn't listen. Her anxiety only spiked when she could see the small burn mark. He assured her, many times, that it was nothing. Afterall, the mark was no bigger than a small pebble.
After reassuring her that he was fine, they went to see Julieta. With a quick bite to eat, the mark faded out of sight. He thought it was over.
He was wrong.
Pepa kept her distance after that. Any time he would step closer to her, she would step back, keeping the space between them. It didn't take him long to realize that the whole thing affected her more than he thought. So, he would offer her chocolates and hopefully be able to put this whole thing to rest.
Félix caught sight of Julieta handing out her last arepa. The man, who stood covered in cacti, thanked her before disappearing. Dusting her hands off, she began to pack up her area.
"Here, let me help you." Félix offered as he walked over to her. Quickly, he stacked a pile of dirty dishes onto one corner of Julieta's stand.
"Gracias, Félix." Julieta offered him a grateful smile as she picked up her small spice jars, putting them into the pockets on her apron. The two continued on in silence, gathering up the ingredients and cleaning the area.
After a few minutes, Julieta spoke. "So. Mamá told me what happened. How are you feeling?"
Félix stared at his upcoming sister-in-law. Of course, Alma would tell them.
"Surprisingly, it wasn't that bad." Félix chuckled as he patted the recently healed area. "It stung for a moment. It didn't feel any worse than a sunburn. The burn looked worse than it was. How did it go over with your mother?"
"It went." Julieta sighed. After hearing about the incident, the matriarch had been furious. Their mother caught Pepa the next morning, scolding her for her lack of control. Normally, the middle child would just snap at their mother and go on her way. But this time, it was different. Pepa didn't argue with their mother, she just nodded. Once she was finished, Pepa excused herself and left to start her day. "Mamá was really hard on her this time. She said the mark shouldn't have happened in the first place."
Félix bit his tongue. Something he found himself having to do a lot more now that he was older. He wanted to call the matriarch out on her treatment of the triplets, especially his Pepa. Alma constantly reminding her of her clouds, her need for control, all of it. Their mother might not see the damage she was causing, but he could. "It was an accident. If anyone's to blame it's me. I scared her."
"You and I know that. But neither of them seems to."
"How is she?" Félix asked.
"Pep went home to take a break. I don't think she's been sleeping." Julieta explained, knowing not to hide any facts from Félix. The oldest tried to have a conversation with the redhead, to see what was wrong, but Pepa just brushed her off assuring her sister she was fine. "She still avoiding you?"
"Yeah." Félix muttered. He held up the box of chocolates. "I'm going to give her these to see if it helps. She says she's fine. But..."
"You don't believe her?"
"No. Do you?"
"Honestly? No, I don't."
Félix let out a relieved sigh. Thankful that he wasn't alone in his worry for Pepa. "I think-"
Loud thunder echoed throughout the village. The pair watched as the trees started to sway with the wind. Dark clouds rolled in, erasing the sun from the sky. Sharing a concerned look, the pair made their way back home.
"Bruno? Agustín?" Julieta yelled as they entered Casita.
"Juli?" Bruno's voice called out from the second floor. "We're up here!"
"Bruno, what's going on? Where's Pepa?"
Bruno gestured to the door ahead of him. Lining up with Agustín, they both threw their weight against the door, trying to force it open. "She's in her room."
"What do you mean, she's in her room?" Alma asked as she came out of her own room. She heard the thunder before she noticed the dark clouds rolling in. "She can't do this kind of damage from her room."
Bruno shrugged his shoulders. He didn't believe it at first either. Pepa's room, like the rest of theirs, was equipped to handle anything she could throw at it. Or so they thought. Whatever had set his sister off, must have been bad. "I'm telling you Mamá. She's in there."
"The wind's so strong we can't even get the door open!" Agustín shouted as he threw his shoulder against the door again.
Félix came up beside his soon to be brothers and pushed on the door. Finally, it cracked open. A gust of wind rushed out, knocking them all back before slamming shut. Julieta steadied herself and her mother. "Careful!"
Alma turned to the pair of men on the ground. She watched as Julieta helped her boyfriend to his feet, before helping her brother. Alma stared at Bruno, who shrunk back at first. "What happened?"
"I don't know!" Bruno yelled. "One minute we're chopping wood, then the next thing we know we're getting pelted with hail."
"We need to get in there." Julieta said, staring at the group. "She could be hurt."
Agustín shook his head, putting his arm around Julieta's shoulder. "We've been trying since it started, Juli."
Félix paid them no mind. Instead, he took ahold of the doorknob and pushed with all his might. But it wasn't enough, the door didn't budge. Laying his head against the door, he pleaded to the only one who could help him. "Casita, please. Let me in. I have to get to her."
Casita heard his plea. Opening the door, the wind pressure pulled Félix inside of the room. Bruno started for the open doorway, only to be thrown back as the door slammed shut. "Félix!"
"Pepa?" Félix called out, though he knew it wouldn't do any good. The winds howled around him, vibrating the entire room. Snow, sleet, and rain all mixed together, swirling around the room. Lifting his arm, he tried to stop it from assaulting his face. His frustrations only grew as the wind pushed him back into the wall.
"Casita, can you help me get to her?" Casita kept his feet on the ground, as they slowly made their way into the center of the growing catastrophe. The house released its hold on him as he entered the eye of the hurricane. Leaning down, he patted the floor. "Gracias."
"Pepi?" Félix called out again, thankful that the winds weren't as loud. Yet, Pepa paid no attention to him. She sat in the middle of the storm, her knees to her chest. One arm wrapped around her, the other sat rooted in her braid. Félix watched as she shook.
"Clear skies. Clear skies. Clear skies."
"Amor?" He asked hesitantly. He didn't want to scare her. Kneeling in front of her, he laid his hand on her hand. He could feel her trembling.
"Félix?" Her eyes snapped open. Félix was stunned. Her normal emerald eyes were now replaced by a glowing golden color. As far as he was aware, Bruno's eyes were the only ones that glowed.
Why where they now?
Recovering from his shock, he turned his attention back to Pepa. He could figure it out later. Right now, he needed to focus on her. Not her gift. He nodded and placed his other hand on her knee. "Si. I'm here."
The glow dimmed as she finally looked at him. Tears filled her eyes again. She shook her head. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm a monster."
"Why would you even say that? Amor, you're not a monster."
"Yes, I am!" Pepa stood so fast that Félix nearly fell over. He watched as she started pacing. The glow became brighter as her breath quickened. The winds howled again and booming thunder shook the room. Félix watched as the rain started to mix with large pieces of hail. "I couldn't control myself and now you're gone."
"I'm right here." The shorter man tried to assure, pulling her into his arms.
"No. No, you're not."
"Of course, I am."
"No! I-I seen you. You were laying in the courtyard! You're dead and it's all because of me!"
"Amor, I promise you. I'm right here. If I wasn't alive, would I be able to do this?" He released his hold around her to bring his hands to cup her face. He placed a soft kiss on her lips.
"B-but. I saw you-" Her eyes flickered back and forth. Green, to gold, then finally, they settled back to the green. He let out a relieved sigh. He had gotten through to her.
"You had a nightmare, amor. It wasn't true. I'm here. I'll always be here for you."
"I'm sorry." It was barely a whisper. He watched as her eyes fluttered shut. Easily, he caught her around the waist before she could fall. He leaned down, effortlessly picking her up into his arms. He held her tight as he knelt to the ground, gently rocking them both back and forth.
Pepa's door burst open the second the storm stopped. The group from outside finally being able to enter the room. "Félix! Pepa!"
"Is she okay?" Julieta questioned as she slid to a stop. Her eyes raked over her sister, trying to find any form of injuries.
Félix shook his head. "I think she's just exhausted."
"What happened?" Agustín asked as he looked around at the damage. Casita, though, had already started its repairs. He knew the power of the middle triplet, but this had been the first time he had seen it cause so much damage.
"I think she had a nightmare. About killing me because she couldn't control her powers." He shot a glare at the matriarch. Alma's eyes softened, but she didn't speak.
"Oh Pepa." Julieta sighed. She should have known that something like this would happen. She knew full well the amount of anxiety her sister carried. Standing up, she brushed herself off. She couldn't change the past, but she'd make damn sure it wouldn't happen again. "Here, you can take her to my room."
Slowly, Pepa opened her eyes. Sitting up, she looked around the room. Félix sat in a chair to her right, fast asleep. Behind him, she could see the kitchen supplies and freshly grown herbs. Looking down at the bed, she could see the blue bed sheets. She recognized her sister's room instantly.
"Buenos días, sleepyhead."
"F-Félix?"
Looking back at her fiancé, she was met with warm dark eyes. He gave her a wide toothy smile. "Yep, it's me."
Folding her hands onto her lap, she spoke. "I'm so-"
Félix held a finger against her lips, silencing her. He'd heard enough apologies from her to last him a lifetime. Leaning in, he placed a kiss against her temple. "Hush. You don't have to apologize to me."
"But-"
"No buts. Pepa, you're allowed to feel emotions. You're allowed to be happy. But you're also allowed to be upset, angry, or even scared."
Pepa shook her head, keeping her eyes on her hands. "When I do that, people can get hurt. Just like you did."
"Amor." Félix sighed. He laid one hand on hers. Bringing his other hand up to her cheek. Finally, she looked at him. He gave her a reassuring smile. "It was an accident. And, it was also my fault. Besides, it was kind of cool to be struck with lightning."
"You're just saying that to make me feel better." Pepa sniffed. She waved the cloud away, not wanting to take the chance of soaking her sister's bed.
"Would I do that?"
"Yes."
"You got me there." He chuckled. He lightly squeezed her hands. "I'm here to help you. No matter what."
"What if I lose control again?"
"Then I'll bring you back." He assured. "When I fell in love with you, I fell in love with all of you. That includes your gifts. Lightning and all. Mi Nube, I can't wait to marry you. To spend every day, proving that to you."
Pepa let her tears fall this time as she leaned into him. Letting out a shaky breath as she rested her head against his. He was right. He was alive, and more importantly, he was safe. She'd lost her control, and he'd brought her back.
And if the time came, she was sure he could do it again.
