Astro scowled as he sat in the office and waited for his escort. Janna had dropped him off here and told him to find the principal's office, after which he was given a schedule and told he'd be paired with a fellow student who would show him around.
This whole school thing didn't really sit all that well with him. On Mewni your parents taught you everything you needed to know for basic living. If you needed to learn a craft or skill you found a mentor who would teach you.
Having someone teach you info in a room filled with other kids seemed inefficient to him. How could one person focus on so many people at once? It seemed impossible. But Janna had said if he really wanted to blend in he needed to come here, and unfortunately, Nia couldn't be with him. They divided these places up by age, and she was supposed to go to another school.
Not being under his watch made him nervous, but no one here knew who she really was, so they had no reason to bother her. He told himself she would be fine. She may not have been able to fight very well, but she had a magnetic personally. She would probably fit right in at this sort of place. Unlike him.
Astro had never been good at conversing with others. Not in a social way anyhow. He knew how to be polite and cordial, but as far as joking around and goofing off… it wasn't his style. He had earned most of his admiration from his people on the battlefield. He very much doubted the same tactics would work here.
The door slowly opened up and he saw a figure walk in. It was a young man around his age, who had blonde and brown hair. He wore a black shirt that looked like it had… some sort of buttons on it, and a blue and white jacket. His pants had a rip in them, and he wore blue and white sneakers.
He looked around before turning to Astro with a deadpan expression. "Are you…" He looked down at the card in his hand. "Asterossa? Is that right?"
Astro stood up. "That's me. I assume you're the one who's supposed to be my escort?" he asked curiously. This guy didn't exactly look all that thrilled about being here.
He nodded. "Yeah, the name Micah. You can call me Mikey, or Mike, or whatever. Not really a big deal to me," he said shrugging his shoulders.
Astro walked towards him before bowing his head. "Well Micah, I'd like to thank you for showing me around. I'm very… unfamiliar with this place, and the sooner I learn my way around the better," he explained.
Micah nodded. "No problem I guess. If I'm being honest I really only volunteered so I could get a bit of time out of class," he admitted. Astro raised an eyebrow, which the other teen didn't seem to acknowledge. "Well, we should get going. Sooner we get this little tour over with the sooner we can find someplace to chill…"
Astro had no idea what he was talking about but followed him anyway. As they walked down the hall, he noticed all the decorations around the place. There were boards with papers posted on them, cases that had trophies, pictures of other students. He wondered just how many kids needed to go to this place.
The tour continued as he was shown the cafeteria, the gymnasium, the outside field, the science room. All of these things seemed pretty pointless to Astro, but he just nodded and went along, not wanting to offend Micah. Though he wasn't sure if that was something he had to worry about. The boy didn't really seem to care.
"Alright man, final stop. This is the roof," Micah said as he opened the door and walked out.
Astro looked around curiously. "Why would students be allowed up here?"
"We aren't. I just come here to chill and get away from the teachers when I got a free period or something," Micah said as he sat back against a wall and pulled out some kind of little electrical device. He turned it on and began playing, leaving a confused Astro just standing there.
"Aren't… aren't you supposed to be going to class or something?"
Micah smirked. "Yeah, but showing around the new kid always gets you a few extra classes of screwing around. If they ask I'll just say you got super curious about everything. So we can just chill for now," he explained.
Astro looked at him curiously. He was pretty sure they weren't supposed to be doing this, but it wasn't like he was in a rush to get to class either. He walked over and sat down a few feet away from Micah. He glanced over at him. He looked completely focused on whatever that thing was.
"What is that?" he asked.
"Hmm?"
"That thing you're pressing. What is it?"
Micah grew a confused look, but didn't take his eyes away from the screen? "You mean my handheld? It's a game. A video game."
"Video game?" he asked. His mother had said something about those once. Little things people here used to have fun and keep them distracted.
"You've never seen a video game?" Micah asked. He didn't think there was anyone living anywhere in their age group who hadn't at least heard of them. "Seriously? Where did you live before now?"
"No place you've probably heard of…"
Micah hummed once more before staring at him. He clicked a few more buttons on his handheld before holding it out towards him. "Here, try it," he said.
Astro looked at the gaming device hesitantly. "Uh, I'm fine. I don't think video games are really my thing. I do appreciate the offer though," he said holding his hand up.
Micah smirked. "Suit yourself. But you should at the very least try something before you say it's not your thing," he reasoned.
Astro thought for a moment. He had promised his mother he would try to relax more, and if this was what Earth children did to relax, he could at least give it a shot. He sighed before holding his hand out. "I guess it couldn't hurt…"
He took the device and looked at it. There was a strangely dressed warrior in green holding a sword and shield, standing in the middle of a forest. "So… how do I do this?"
"You see those shady looking guys over there. Just run over and hit the A button to attack, and the Y button to block. It's your basic side-scroller."
"Side Scroller?"
"You got a lot to learn man…" he said, smirking.
Nia smiled as she walked down the halls of the school. So far everything seemed to be going pretty good for her. The classes were a little boring, and she wasn't exactly caught up on the material, but she was sure she could handle it.
Everyone seemed really nice to her. Especially the guys. Some of them had even offered to carry the books she got for her. That must have just been a thing on Earth.
The girl who had been assigned as her escort seemed pretty nice. It was a really tall girl by the name of Bluebell. About as tall as her brother! She was friendly enough to her.
Now she was headed towards something called recess, which was supposed to be a free time for them to stretch their legs and relax. She was looking forward to it after being stuck behind a desk all day. She made her way outside to the back of the school where everyone else was already busy doing whatever it was they were going to do.
A group of girls was off to the side gossiping, some boys were lighting off a firecracker, others were playing some game where they threw some balls back and forth. She hummed. That last one looked interesting.
She began to make her way over towards them until she spotted something from the corner of her eye. It was two other boys. One of them was noticeably bigger than the other, and he was shoving the smaller one up against the side of the school.
The other boy was much smaller in comparison. He was around her age and had shaggy black shoulder-length hair. He wore a dark red bandana around his forehead, a red tank top, blue torn up jeans, a pair of fingerless gloves, and black biker boots. Nia noticed he was missing one of his front teeth.
"I told you to fork over the money Jones!" the larger boy said angrily.
The boy raised his hands up. "I don't have any on me man! If I did it would already be in your hands! I swear!" he said, trying to calm him.
The bully looked frustrated. "You holding out on me Jones?!"
"No! I swear I got nothing left!"
Nia looked around, expecting someone to jump in and stop this. Earth was supposed to have a bunch of heroes, right? If someone was getting robbed, surely one of them would show up. But nobody here seemed to even be batting an eye at what was going on.
It was like… like this was normal. How could they just ignore what was happening? Someone was getting robbed! She narrowed her eyes and then balled her fist up. She wasn't sure if this was something that was normal in school, but she sure as heck wasn't about to just sit here and watch when someone was in trouble.
"Hey!" she said as she marched towards them.
The boys both looked over towards her, both looking surprised. "Oh, hey. It's the new girl," the bully said smiling at her. "What can I do for you cutie?"
Nia narrowed her eyes at him. "You can start by letting that kid go," she demanded.
He looked down at her surprised and then smiled once more. "Who, Jones here? Ah, don't worry about him. We're just talking out a little business deal we have going on, aren't we buddies?" he asked, shaking the boy again.
He looked towards Nia curiously, wondering why she had bothered to step in. But then he gave her reassuring smile. "Yeah, it's all good blondie. Just a chat between friends. Don't worry about it," he said. The boy obviously didn't want to get her involved in whatever was going on.
Nia growled. "Well, it doesn't look like that! It looks like you're stealing from him!"
"Look sweet cheeks, you're new around here, so you're probably not familiar with the pecking order. You see, this guy is what you call a loser. He's a dweeb whose job is to pay money to guys who are on top of the food chain, like me."
Nia grit her teeth. "So you are just a bully…"
"I prefer, monitory liberator."
The platinum blonde thought about using her wand, which she had hidden as a bracelet on her wrist, but knew it would draw unwanted attention. She looked over at the boy who just shook his head. "It's okay…" he muttered motioning for her to leave. "Just get out of here blondie."
Nia stomped her foot. "No! This isn't right! Let him go right now! Or else!"
The bully laughed. "Oh, that's adorable. No offense girlie, but you're out of your depth here. Just go play hopscotch or something and let the big boys handle business," he said before turning back to the boy. "Now like I was saying, hand over the cash and-"
Before he could finish, Nia suddenly jumped on his back with a yell. Everyone turned towards them as she wrapped her arms around his neck, clinging to his back. "What the hell?! Get off of me you crazy bitch!" he shouted trying to shake her off.
"Not until you promise to stop bullying that kid!"
"What do you care about?! It's not your business!"
"I care because it's wrong! Now promise!"
"I'm not promising shit!" Nia growled and then suddenly opened her mouth before biting down on the back of his head as hard as she could. "OW! Ow, god damn it! You're a nutcase!"
Nia used one of her tiny fists to start hitting him on the side of the head. "Promise! Promise! Promise! Promise!" She continued shouting as she assaulted the much larger boy, who desperately tried to fling her off his back.
The smaller boy looked at them wide-eyed. He didn't really know why this was happening, but hopefully, this meant he'd keep his lunch money in his wallet…
Another boy standing nearby smiled and pulled out his phone. "Aw shit, this is gonna get so many hits," he said snickering as he began to record the fight.
Astro grimaced as he looked over his… it was pretty hard to call this lunch. Despite being a prince, he wasn't a particularly picky guy when it came to food. On the battlefield he had quickly learned to eat what was given to you. The alternative was going to battle hungry, and that just wouldn't do.
But this stuff… it looked like something they'd serve in the dungeons. "What is this?" he asked as he lifted his fork. He thought it was some sort of soup, but the way it clung to his fork told him otherwise. "Is this even edible?"
Micah shrugged and continued playing his game. "Better start packing your own lunch man. Otherwise, you're stuck with the mystery meat," he advised.
Astro shook his head before sliding it away. He didn't think he'd end up having to fight. Even if he did, he was pretty sure having this on his stomach would do more harm than good. So far school was not something he had really seen himself sticking with.
Micah seemed pretty nice, but most of the other kids were giving him strange looks. The girls kept staring at him oddly, and the guys were scowling at him. Earthlings were strange.
"So is this really all you do here? Listen to teachers drone on and try to avoid food poisoning? I honestly just don't see the purpose in attending this place. Seems like a lot of effort for minimal reward…"
Micah grunted. "Yeah man, that's pretty much school in a nutshell."
Astro groaned and got ready to leave. He wasn't about to stay here and waste his time when there were more productive things he could be doing. He could be practicing his swordsmanship, or training Nia, or spending time with Sear. All of which were better options than this.
He stood up and began walking off, and Micah didn't even bat an eye. As he headed for the door, he suddenly felt himself bump into someone. He mentally cursed himself for being so careless, and then looked up to see a much larger boy towering over him. His food had been spilled all over his jacket, which looked very similar to Micah's.
Everyone in the cafeteria gasped and looked towards the scene. Had the new kid just knocked over the launch of one of the meanest jokes in school? Some of them immediately pulled out their phones, while others silently prayed for the new kid.
Astro, not noticing any of the tension, just bowed his head. "Apologies. Please excuse my clumsiness," he said.
The boy stared down at him for a few seconds, and then scowled. "You know new kid, you got a lot of nerve spilling shit on me your first day here. You got a death wish?"
Astro looked up at him confused. "What? No. It was just an accident. I'm sorry. Look, I'll pay for the jacket-" The boy suddenly grabbed the front of his shirt and yanked him forward.
"Not good enough," he said angrily. "You come in here trying to woo all the girls and acting like your hot shit. You need to learn the pecking order around here pretty boy. I'm going to beat some respect into you."
Astro looked over his shoulder back at Micah, as if asking if this was really happening. "God damn it…" Micah muttered getting up from his chair. He couldn't go letting him get his ass kicked on his first day. That would make him a pretty lousy escort.
"Look, I meant no disrespect. It was a sincere accident, and I don't want any trouble."
"Well you got trouble, new kid."
Astro ran a hand through his hair. "Please don't do this…" he said exhausted. The incident earlier couldn't be helped since they had been attacked first, but he at the very least wanted to try and avoid another fight.
The jock lifted his fist and got ready to swing, but Astro suddenly reached up and grabbed his wrist. He tightened his grip, and the boy yelled out. "OW! Damn it!" Astro kept squeezing his wrist, and he cried out in pain. "Shit! Ouch! What the hell?! You're gonna break my wrist!"
Everyone looked shocked as they watched Astro force the bully down to his knees. He looked down at him with a disappointed stare. "All that boasting and you can barely handle even this. Earthlings really are so fragile…" he muttered. He brought his fist back, and then punched, nailing him right in the stomach.
The jock felt all the air leave his lungs at the blow, and Astro let go of him, letting him fall to the floor as he clutched his stomach. "Like I said, I'm sorry. If you want compensation for the jacket I'm more than willing to pay. But please don't attempt to assault me again. I don't take any joy in fighting you," he said shaking his head.
With that he turned around and began walking off. He will try this school thing tomorrow. Today he was tired and just wanted to go home. As all the students watched the scene unfold, most of them in utter shock, there was one who narrowed his eyes at Astro.
Raleigh had remembered what that officer had said earlier. A silver eyed green haired guy in weird clothes and carrying a sword. He didn't show off any ice powers, and he wasn't carrying a sword. He didn't even dress that strangely either. But the hair and eyes… he hadn't met a single person like this in school before, ever.
Then a new kid who just happened to fit that description and could kick ass shows up. There was something very sketchy going on here. He got up and walked towards the door. He needed to have a few words with the new kid…
