He had never felt worse in his life.
"Asterossa, it wasn't your fault. You did the right thing. You're just not used to having all that power yet," Star said patting him on the back.
He kept looking down at the ground. He hadn't meant to lose control. Meteora said he needed to learn how to deal with his monster and magic powers. But he never thought he could end up like that. He just kept on thrashing around and destroying everything in his path.
It had taken Meteora and Eclipsa half an hour to finally get him back under control. Maybe the Commission was right about him. Maybe he should have just been locked up, or worse.
"Look, this the first time you've ever tried this," Star said.
"And it'll be the last…" he said clutching his arms.
Never again.
The air was awkward and tense as Astro and Nia rode in the back of the truck the league had sent for them. He was still in his monster form as he sat with his eyes closed and his arms crossed. Nia sat beside him doing her best not to stare at him.
After the others had arrived, they began helping Amber and Micah. Amber had managed to heal fairly quickly, but Micah had been a bit more banged up. Drake had made a quick escape just before they had arrived, and there was no sign of him whatsoever.
Kingsley and Damian had stayed behind to deal with the media and let everyone know the situation was going to be handled, while Cayenne had led the others back to the base.
Nia wanted to just ask her brother what all of this was. Why he looked like that and who that monster was. But she just didn't know how to come out with it. Did she just be blunt about it and asked directly, or wait until later. Maybe she should have let him tell when he was ready.
The van came to a stop, and the back doors opened. Cayenne glared at him from outside. "What the fuck was that back there?!" she snapped angrily.
Or maybe Cayenne would do it for her.
Astro got up and walked out of the truck, heading for the base. The others were already outside looking just as curious and confused as Nia was. "I'll explain later…" he said.
"The fuck you will!" Cayenne yelled. "You don't actually expect me to just let all that crazy shit I saw back there slide do you?! I ain't Kingsley! I'm not pussyfooting around!"
Astro grit his teeth. "It's not any of your business."
She growled and stepped over towards him. "Oh, it's not?!" she asked in disbelief. "Well then care to tell me what the fuck you were doing with Drake?!"
"He just happened to be there…"
"Bullshit!" Cayenne snapped. "You been acting weird this whole week! And now that I think about it, this all kind of makes sense!"
Hank frowned. "Cayenne, c'mon. We're all a little tense right now and-"
"Oh wake the fuck up!" she said shaking her head. "He's been acting shady as shit since the second he stepped foot here! We know more about fucking Amber than we do him! Who knows how many times he's been meeting up with Drake when we weren't looking!"
"Cayenne!" Renee said, frowning. That was a huge accusation to throw out there.
Astro seemed unfazed. "I don't have time for this," he said as he kept heading towards the base. What his father said was still bothering him. He needed to find out what in the hell was going on here, and he needed to find out now.
Cayenne reached out and grabbed his shoulder. "Hold the fuck on! We're not done here!"
Astro's tail moved and whipped at her, and she moved back just barely avoiding it. "Get your hands off of me," he said, glaring at her.
Cayenne scowled. "You know what asshole. This has been a long time coming…" she said cracking her neck. She walked towards him ready to brawl, and he turned around and let out a low growl. Nia looked at her brother in shock. He really was acting like an animal.
Amber quickly stepped in and moved between the two of them. "Stop it! Both of you! This is not the time to be fighting one another!" she said, holding her hands out at both of them.
Astro kept growling towards Cayenne, and she glared right back. Hank coughed slightly and then rolled towards them. "Uh, Cayenne. Not to butt in, but I've been working on that monster radar for a while now, and I'm pretty sure I would have known if he had left or was meeting up with anyone. No new signatures popped up around him. Not until earlier today of course."
The prince looked towards him. "You've been tracking me?" he asked dangerously.
Hank held his hands up. "I-I've been tracking everyone! I had to study the different signatures so the radar could tell us from them!" he said quickly.
"Don't turn this on him fucker! You may not have been meeting with the Youngblood, but you've still been keeping secrets!" Cayenne said. "When the fuck were you going to tell us-"
"NEVER!" Astro shouted back at her. "I was NEVER going to tell you, because it's none of your goddamn business! Everything that happened today was my problem, and it would have been better off if you'd all just butt out! Now get out of my way, I'm leaving!"
He opened up a portal, and before anyone could even think of stopping him he made his way through and closed it. Everyone just stood there for a few moments until Nia frowned. She turned towards Amber. "Where was he going?!" she asked angrily.
Amber sighed. "From the color of the portal he was headed back to Mewni."
"Well that's where I'm going! Open a portal for me Amber!"
Vera stepped forward. "We should come with you. I have a feeling something bad might happen." She definitely didn't like the look Astro had in his eyes. He was planning on doing something crazy and reckless.
"I don't care! Just get us there!" Nia said, determined. She was going to find out what in the world was happening right now, even if she had to shake it out of her brother.
Star rushed down towards the Royal Archives as fast as she could. The alarm had tripped a small while ago, which meant someone had somehow managed to find it. But who? Only a handful of people even knew about its location.
She got to the entrance of the archives and saw the doors had been pried open. She didn't have to go inside to find the intruder however. He was still standing outside the door. "Astro?" she asked wide eyed. He leaned against the door with his arms crossed, an angry expression on his face. The queen quickly noticed he was in his monster form. "Oh no… what happened?" she asked, looking worried.
"Nothing compared to what's going to…" he muttered.
A few moments later, more figures quickly entered in behind Star. The rest of the Magic High Commission flooded in all looking ready for a fight. "What's going on?! Where's the intruder?!" Hekapoo asked, holding up her scissors.
"I'm ready to crystalize! Let's go!" Rhombulus shouted holding his arms up.
Astro growled, getting their attention. They turned towards him. "Asterossa?" Omnitraxus said looking confused. "What's the meaning of this?" he asked.
"Did you trip the alarm?" Hekapoo asked, narrowing her eyes at him. "And why are you in that form? You know better than to be walking around looking like that."
Astro stood up. "I wasn't sure what other way I could get all of you here in one place quickly," he said walking towards them. "I needed to talk to you all."
Omnitraxus frowned at him. "You tripped an alarm just to talk to us? Darn it boy, if you wanted a meeting you should have just gone to your mother. I'm going back home. This was obviously a waste of time," he said turning around to leave.
A wall of ice shot up in front of him, cutting him off. "Nobody is going anywhere." They all turned back towards Astro who was glaring.
"Astro, what is this?" Star asked.
He froze the exit of the room shut and pointed towards them. "Why didn't I sense him?" he asked, looking irritated. "It's not something I really ever thought about before today, but after what he said earlier it's bugging me."
Hekapoo looked confused. "What are you talking about? Look, if you have something to say then say it and stop wasting our time. We have important things to do."
"I've always been able to sense Typhon." The moment the name left his mouth they all grew wide eyed. "Every time he was even nearby, my senses went haywire. I felt him coming today, and even when I was a kid. So how come I didn't sense him back then?"
"You saw Typhon?!" Omnitraxus said shocked. "When?! How did he get loose?!"
Astro looked even more annoyed. "You said he was the one who killed Rosetta. That's what Star told me, and what you told her. So why didn't I sense her when he came? I remember that day, I should have felt something the moment he set foot in that dimension, so why? The only thing I can figure is that he wasn't there. Which means, somebody else did it, and you lied."
Star shook her head. "Whoa, hold on a second. Astro, you need to calm down."
Astro ignored her and kept looking towards the others. "I can't think of anyone else who'd want to have killed her. Nobody else besides him even knew where she went except. Nobody except the Magic High Commission, and Tom…"
Star's eyes widened. "What… what are you saying?"
"I'm not fond of King Tom, but I know him well enough to know he's not a murderer, or a liar. You lot on the other hand have lied to the royal family on numerous occasions, imprisoned anyone who you even thought went against your will, and have spent the past thirteen years trying to keep me in check."
Astro lifted his hand and a black ball of energy formed from it. "So I'm going to ask this, once and only once, and I want an honest answer," he said dangerously. "Which one of you killed my mother?"
Star stepped forward. "Whoa! Hold on a second! I think we all need to take a breath and calm down here! Astro, there's no way they could have done anything like that. I would have known about…" she stopped when he pulled out a scroll and tossed it to her.
The queen looked confused, and then realized it was a scroll from the Royal Archive. "It keeps records of everything that happens in Mewni. Check the date. The three of them left this dimension on the date she died, Tom found me three days later. Typhon's record says he was still trapped here, I check them myself," he said sternly.
Star read over it and then turned towards them. "What did you do?" she asked, narrowing her eyes. They once again avoided her gaze. "No… you didn't…"
Omnitraxus spoke up. "Typhon was already a danger to all of Mewni. We were barely able to seal him away last time. We couldn't let his offspring just run about freely. We came for the boy, not her…" he explained. "But she wouldn't listen. She wouldn't stand down."
"So you killed her?!" Star asked furiously.
Hekapoo crossed her arms. "She killed herself. She was convinced we'd kill him. We tried to talk her into just giving him up but she wouldn't quit. After we beat her she used some spell to keep us from laying a hand on him. We couldn't even track him down anymore. She was already running on empty, and that was the final straw."
"That's right! It wasn't our fault! She did it to herself!" Rhombulus said panicking. "If she'd have just given him up it never would have happened! We were trying to do the right thing! Make sure Mewni was safe!"
The room shook, and they all looked back at Astro who now had a dark aura surrounding his body. Star paled and stepped forward holding her hands up. "Astro, listen to me. I need you to calm down. They're going to answer for this but, you can't be rash. Taking revenge isn't going to bring her back."
He glared past her and at the three. For a moment he reached for his sword. If he was quick enough he could slip by his mother and get to them, but… what was the point? What would he even do afterwards? Even if he didn't somehow become a fugitive, Amber would come after him for killing her mother.
And besides, his mother was right. It wouldn't change anything. Not a damn thing would change from taking their lives. He hung his head and sighed before walking back and leaning against the wall. He slumped down to the floor and wrapped his arms around his knees. "I give up…"
They all looked at him confused. Star seemed the most shocked. He knew her son. She had expected him to lash out and attack. But he just… didn't. "Asterossa?" she said walking towards him. "Sweetie, are you okay?" she asked.
He buried his face in his knees. "You know, I really don't know what I was expecting to get from coming here. From the day I was born life has been nothing but one kick in the dick after another, so I shouldn't be surprised by any of this…" he said wiping his eyes. She looked at him shocked. He was crying. Astro hadn't cried since he was six.
"Astro, it's going to be okay…"
"No, it's not," he said sniffling. "Just go please."
Star reached out towards him for a moment, but then sighed. She turned back towards the others. "Leave," she ordered. Hekapoo looked like she was about to say something, but Star glared at her. "It wasn't a question, it was an order."
They all stared at her for a moment before turning to leave. Star turned back to her son and then sat beside him. She wrapped an arm around his shoulder. "I know you don't believe me right now, but things will get better. I promise."
Astro sighed and then wiped his face once more before turning towards her. "I need to go back home…" he said. Star looked at him confused, but then grew wide eyed. She opened her mouth to speak, but he cut her off. "Mother, I need to go back there. I spent my whole life trying to kill him and I found out it was all a lie. I need to see him and settle this. The right way."
She frowned. "I get it. I do. But… you'll come back won't you?" she asked. "I mean you don't have to feel like you can't come back here. I'll deal with the Commission. After what they pulled they'll never be able to call you out on anything ever again. Things will get better, and-"
He grabbed her hand. "I'm coming back," he assured. "I promise. I just… I need to do this."
Star sniffed and then hugged him. "Okay… just promise me you'll be safe. If you think he'll try anything you get out of there and you run back here? Got it?"
"He won't," Astro said, hugging her back. "I promise."
Nia ran through the portal, followed by Amber and Vera. She quickly looked around the room trying to find any signs of her brother, but spotted nothing. She didn't even recognize what this place was, but Amber was sure this was the right place. She'd gotten them as close as possible.
"No! Where did he go?! What happened?!" she said worried.
Amber reached out and patted her on the shoulder. She turned towards the princess and then saw her nodding over towards the exit doors. She looked over and then saw her mother sitting on the bottom of the stairs. "Mom!"
She ran over and towards the Queen who looked up at her surprised. "Nia? How did you get here?" she asked. She then noticed Amber and Vera. "Oh, right."
Vera knelt down in front of her. "My Queen. It's an honor to finally meet you."
Star stared down at her for a moment, but then smiled and waved her hand. "Oh come on, you don't have to bow to me! I'm not really all into that formal stuff unless it's at an event, and even that's for show," she said. "You're Ambrosine. I've heard a lot of good things about you."
Amber looked up at her surprised. "Uh… I'm honored my Queen."
Star motioned for her to stand up. Right now the Queen was feeling a mixture of emotions, one of them being outright fury towards the Commission, including Hekapoo. But she wasn't going to take it out on her daughter. She hadn't done anything wrong. "Nice to see you too Vera."
"Oh, hey auntie Star," she said waving.
Nia however wasn't in the mood for formalities. "Where's Astro?" she asked, frowning.
Star sighed. "Nia, I'm sure something really crazy happened back on Earth, and you want answers. But you're brother is going through a thing right now and I think we should just leave him be. He needs a little time to sort some things out."
She grit her teeth. "No! I don't care!" she said, stomping her foot. "I need to see him! I need to say something to him! Where did he go?!" she said.
Star frowned. "Nia, he went back home."
Nia huffed and then began heading up the stairs. "Okay, he's back at the castle then!" she said ready to go give her brother a piece of her mind.
"No, that's not what I meant Nia," Star said, sighing. "I mean his first home. He's headed back to the monster kingdom…"
Nia's eyes widened. "W-what?! Why would he go there?!" The Monster Kingdom was pretty much an unknown. Nobody knew anything about them. They weren't even really recognized by the royal court. "It's dangerous! He could get killed!"
"He's going to see his father…"
