Team meditation was supposed to be a time where all of the members of the Supernatural Department came together and cleared their minds. It wasn't just relaxing, it also sort of brought them together. All the departments had their own thing that they bonded over, and for them this was it.
But lately… well, it hadn't been working out well for Nia. Whenever she would get too deep in her thoughts she could feel her magic start bubbling up to the surface. A breeze would come through the room, knocking over everything that wasn't nailed down to the floor. So she'd decided to sit out until she could get things under wraps.
Since she didn't just want to sit and watch, she'd decided to spend the time doing something a little more productive. "Wicked Whirlwind Rail!" Nia waved her hands, the spiraling tornado following her movements. She did her best to concentrate and keep the spell under her control.
It was sort of ironic. Before she could barely use a spell like this without it blowing up in her face, but now she is struggling because they were too strong to get a handle on. If it wasn't one thing, it was another. She moved her arms up into the air, the blast of wind went upwards until she swung her hands back down.
The spell crashed into the ground, blowing Nia back a bit. She let out a tired breath. She was getting a little bit better, but it was still really hard. And these were spells she was already used to working with too. But she guessed something was better than nothing.
"You're getting better at that."
When the princess turned around she saw Envie walking towards her. "Oh, hey. Are you guys finished meditating already?" the blonde asked.
"A while ago actually. I came by after but you seemed really up into your training so I let you keep going," the ghost girl explained. "Looks like it's going pretty well though huh?"
Nia shrugged. "I guess. Not really helping with my new powers, but at least I can keep working on the old ones," she said, making a small tornado in her hand. She sighed before walking over and taking a seat on the fountain nearby.
Envie hummed before making her way over and taking a seat beside her. "You want to talk about it?" she asked. With how protective the girl's brothers were of them, they had often gotten together to vent to one another. Soon Nia had gone to the older girl to vent about other things as well.
Not that she really wanted to talk about everything that had been going on, but she felt like if she kept holding it all in she would go crazy. "My brother…" she muttered. "He was supposed to be the one teaching me this stuff. And looking after me. And… he just left." She frowned, a bitter look growing on her face.
Envie gave the girl a sympathetic look. She figured she still had a chip on her shoulder about that. "Nia, we all miss your brother. But he said he was coming back right?"
"I know. And I believe him, I just… I feel like with everything going on I need him here, and he's just gone," she said looking a little bitter. "The time I need him here the most and he's gone."
Envie put a hand on her shoulder. "Okay, I get it. You feel like he abandoned you."
"I know he didn't, bust I just…"
"Knowing something in your head and how you feel about it can be two different things Nia," the older girl explained. "I know my brother still cares about me, even though he tried to act like he didn't. But it still annoys me he went to the Youngblood. Doesn't mean I don't care about him either, but it's frustrating, you know?"
Nia looked down in thought. She sort of understood what she was staying. She knew her brother was coming back, and it wasn't like he knew what was going on with her. But she still couldn't help but feel somewhat angry towards him.
"Just try and remember that he left for a good reason. My bro just got mad. I told him off and threw a hissy fit," Envie said rolling her eyes. "Until then you got us to help you out after all. We might not know everything that's going on, but we always got your back."
Nia grew a small smile. "Thanks."
Envie smiled back, then felt her phone vibrate. She looked down at it and then hummed. "I think Kingsley and the others need you inside. Something about a visitor or something."
Nia tilted her head curiously, but then jumped back up to her feet and made her way inside. She quickly made her way towards the officers quarters, waving towards some of the others as she passed by them. When she made her way inside she saw Kingsley along with the other officers, waiting around their table.
And standing in front of them was none other than Alexander Xanatos. Nia's eyes widened as her cousin smiled down at her. "Hello Nia. I didn't think we would be meeting again so soon."
Kingsley saw the look on the princess' face and looked confused. "Uh… do you two know one another?"
Alexander straightened his tie. "We do, though we only met just recently. I'm Nia's cousin. Her paternal cousin. I have to say, I'm surprised you're part of the Vanguard. There are so many superpowered beings here in Townsville it's hard to keep up with who's on what side."
The others seemed shocked by the news. Nia being a princess was impressive enough, but being related to one of the richest men on the planet too? Just how many connections did the girl have? Nia on the other hand seemed… skeptical. She didn't know why, but she got the feeling he knew full well she was going to be here.
"I was just telling your friends how I'd like to start funding the Vanguard League. I think a group of young heroes striving to do the right thing could use all the help they could get," he explained. "We were also discussing funding the event to introduce you and the other princesses from mewni."
Nia grew wide eyed. She had forgotten all about that. After everything that happened they had all agreed to put it on hold. "Yes. I thought I should run it by you first Nia," Kingsley said. "I have to say though, it's really surprising to know you're related to Mr. Xanatos."
"Uh… yeah…" Nia said nervously. She hadn't really wanted anyone else to know about this. Not yet anyway. There was already enough around here to worry about.
Alexander stepped forward and put a hand on Nia's shoulder. "I think this is a more than suitable arrangement, isn't it? I know you already have a few organizations funding you, but with me backing you financial problems will be a thing of the past. And funding the event will bring my company some good publicity," he said.
"Well, aren't you blunt," Cayenne said, rolling her eyes.
"It never pays to beat around the bush young lady," he said before turning back to the young princess. "So what do you say? I can handle most of the preparations. I'll run it all by you first of course."
Nia thought for a moment. Having an event like this would bring some good publicity and support of the Vanguard. It would stink that her brother wouldn't be here for it, but they couldn't just keep waiting around for him forever. "I think it's a good idea. Kingsley?"
The leader nodded. "I'm all for it if you are."
Alexander clapped his hands together. "Excellent! I'm on a bit of a schedule now, but I'll contact you later so we can work out all the details. I'm looking forward to our partnership. It was a pleasure meeting your all," he said nodding towards them.
Kingsley smiled and nodded back politely. "The pleasure was ours Mr. Xanatos."
He turned to leave, but then looked towards Nia one last time. "Oh, and about what we talked about the other day?" he asked curiously.
Nia flinched for a moment. "I'll… call you later."
Alexander nodded and made his way out, one of the guards escorting him to the exit. Once he was gone Hank turned towards Nia. "Your cousin is Alexander Xanatos?!" he said in disbelief.
Nia scratched her cheek. "Yeah. He says so anyway."
Damian hummed. "He does seem to have some sort of ability. I tried to read his aura when he mentioned being related to you, but he… he blocked me. That's the only explanation I could come up anyway. I've never been unable to read an aura before."
Kingsley looked back down at Nia. "Are… are you sure you're comfortable with this? I know you've been going through a lot of personal problems. I don't want you to feel like you need to do this even if you don't want to."
Nia shook her head. "No, it's okay. You don't have to worry about me. It's really not a big deal, and this'll help us out a lot," she said, giving him a thumbs up.
"Well, alright then. If you're sure," Kingsley said wearily.
Nia gave him a playful salute before turning and heading out of the door. As soon as she left her face turned into a frown. Something was odd about Alexander. She still didn't know if she could trust him or not.
But she had some feeling in her gut telling her that if she got the others involved something… bad would happen. She couldn't explain it, but she just knew.
Then again with her luck lately something bad was bound to happen anyway.
"Adam, watch your back!"
The raven haired boy ducked and rolled out of the way as the combat droid zipped past him. His teammate, an armored green skinned boy lifted his crossbow and fired. He hit the droid with pinpoint accuracy and watched as it fell to the ground and deactivated. "Thanks Anthony!" Adam said, giving him a thumbs up.
Anthony nodded back from his spot up above and then turned and looked to the other side of the room, where the rest of his teammates were taking on their own swarm of drones. "Robert, watch your six."
The redheaded sea themed monster growled before moving his tail and batting the approaching droid behind him, knocking it into a few others. He charged forward to take out a few more as the girl beside him smirked and aimed her the large weapon she had over her shoulder. "Clear out Robert," she said before pulling the trigger.
She fired the weapon, which shot out a beam into the air. The beam suddenly split into dozens of smaller ones, all chasing down the droids around them and then blowing them to pieces. "Particle Scatter Beam is fully operational," Lifen said.
Anthony smiled and then turned towards his next teammate on the field. There wasn't a need to call out anything for her. She had everything covered…
Droid after droid was sliced apart by the young women in the silver armor. Her energy lance cut through them as if they were paper. She spun around, twirling the lance like it was a baton, in a deadly yet graceful routine. Once the droids kept coming, but none of them had even come close to landing a hit on her.
After a few moments all the droids suddenly stopped, and then dropped to the ground. Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked up towards Anthony. Behind him sat the last of his teammates. "All droids hacked and deactivated," Zuri said, smirking.
Delta smiled up at the girl. "Nicely done Zuri, you're shorting your record with each go around," she complimented. She turned towards the others. "Adam, remember not to stay too far from the others. If your roll is going to be in support you can't afford to be singled out."
"Robert, be sure not to get too into the battle and lose focus. Lifen, using new equipment in the in training is fine, but just give me a heads up first. I don't want any surprises when we're in the field. Anthony, nice call outs and cover fire. Keep up the good work." Everyone took in the advice from their leader, who deactivated her armor and let out a sigh.
Tiring as training everyone was, it had been worth it. Her team was far from perfect, but for their experience and skill level they worked together well and efficiently. If they kept improving at this pace she'd have a top class team in no time.
"Very impressive."
Everyone turned their heads towards the entrance of the training room and saw none other than Drake himself making his way towards them. Delta looked slightly surprised. "Drake. It's a bit of a surprise to see you here. Not an unwelcome one of course." Drake rarely ever visited them personally. If he had something to say he sent a message or messenger.
"Well, it's been a while since we last got to see one another face to face, and since I have a very important assignment to give you I thought I'd take the chance and bring it myself."
Zuri smirked and leaned over towards Lifen. "I told you they got a thing going on…" The other girl just sighed and rolled her eyes. She didn't know why Zuri insisted on sharing all this gossip with her. She had her other little blonde friend for that didn't she?
Delta hummed. "Well, I'm flattered. But even still, for you to bring it here yourself it must be quite important. What's the assignment?" she asked.
Drake reached down into his pocket and then pulled out a photo. "It's a simple task, but one of utmost importance. One my father personally requested."
Delta's eyes widened. "Are you sure something like that should be assigned to us? My team has improved, but they're still relatively new. Something like of that importance should-"
"Moving any of our higher ranking members will raise too many eyebrows. We want to attract as little attention as possible. And as I said, the task is a relatively simple one. Are you aware of Asterossa Butterfly?" he asked.
Delta nodded. "The prince from Mewni, correct? He disappeared a few weeks ago after the incident involving that monster attack," she answered.
Drake nodded. "Yes. He hasn't been seen since. Though his sister and other associates from mewni are still lingering in our dimension. As well as his pet dragon," he said holding up the photo. It was a picture of Sear, lurking down an alleyway. "It seems without his owner around the dragon has begun to run wild. Your assignment is to capture and bring it in."
Delta looked curious. "I suppose it'd be out of line for me to ask what in the world he wants this beastly creature for?" she asked.
"I didn't dare ask my father about the details. But I have a feeling he's in the mood for soup…"
