To say that Typhon had a very mixed feeling right now would have been the understatement of his life. His life had been filled with rather conflicting moments, but they had all been dwarfed by what he'd felt when the others had awoken. He'd obviously felt it when they woke up. Even if he wasn't able to sense the presence of the others, the connection to his brother Python was undeniable proof.
A whirlwind of feelings passed through him. Joy that his family was back. Anger at the commission, who no doubt knew about this and said nothing to him. Guilt for not having known or cared to know sooner than this. And… worry, about what this meant for mewni, and more importantly his son.
He knew exactly how they were going to act. He knew they were going to pick up where they left off. He would have done the same thing in their position. But he also knew that this would mean they'd inevitable butt heads with his son. And that… that meant that he was going to have to pick a side, whether he liked it or not.
Did he stop his son, saving his life but forcing him to sit back and watch him lose everything he held dear? Or did he stand against the Ten, once again betraying their trust and failing them? Neither one was going to be an easy path. And no matter which he chose he was surely going to face judgement from both sides of his family.
Still, he had to make a choice.
And so he did.
"Typhon, the evacuations have begun…"
He looked down at Sting, who had a worried expression on her face. He stood up and nodded towards her. "Good." All of his generals would know where to lead their groups. Though they would take different routes, they meet at the same destination, just as they had practiced. "Make sure to bring up the rear and collect any stragglers."
Sting frowned. "What about you?"
"I'll catch up after the battle is finished. When the dust has settled we'll bring everyone back, and then we can start rebuilding," he said. He wasn't foolish enough to think that blows wouldn't be traded once they got here. Even in the best case scenario there would be a fight. "I don't imagine I'll be much help there, so you'll have to do most of the organizing. Hopefully Asterossa will be able to spare some time. He's good at things like that," he said as she began walking towards the exit of the tower.
Sting walked after him, gritting her teeth in annoyance and anger. "So… that's it? You just send me away like that? You don't expect me to ask you anymore questions, or call you out on what you're doing?" she asked.
"I don't think there's really much more to ask, is there?" Typhon said, chuckling. "As for calling me out, there's nothing to call me out on. This will be a simple little family reunion. Once all is said and done I'll-"
Sting growled and then stepped in front of him. "They're going to kill you!" she snapped angrily. "You know you won't be able to convince them to stand down! And you know you can't stop them! Why are you doing this! Just declare yourself neutral to it all and let them do what they want! So long as they don't touch the kingdom then-!"
"It's not that simple," Typhon said, shaking his head. "If it was, none of this would be necessary. Besides, even if they agreed to those terms, do you really think I'd be able to convince Asterossa not to act against them? There's no chance of that." His choice wasn't really a choice at all. His first and foremost priority were his children. If he couldn't convince them, he'd have to stop them himself.
"You can't stop them! You told me yourself that even you were no match for all of them together! Go and grab Asterossa, keep him here if you have to! Then maybe-!"
Typhon reached down and cupped the side of Sting's face, surprising her. He smiled down at her. "You have to be sure to watch after the others. Not just Astro, everyone. They're all going to need your help. I imagine you'll find Astro a great deal easier to deal with than you did me. He's far more suited to rule after all."
Sting felt her heart sink. She knew it! She knew he wasn't planning on coming back! "No! I'm not letting you do this! I… I'm staying here with you! Let me and the others help! Maybe we can tip the odds in your favor!" she argued. She couldn't just stand here and allow this to happen again. She'd lost her parents, and then Rosetta, she couldn't lose him too.
Typhon sighed. "Sting… Asterossa is my son. And you are every bit as much my daughter," he said, pressing his forehead against hers. "What kind of father could I claim to be if I asked you to stay and fight with me? Please, you have to go. There are more people that need you right now than they need me. Your little brother needs you. Go."
Sting balled her fist up, feeling tears building up at the back of her eyes. She wanted to stay anyway. To tell him she was going to fight alongside him no matter what he said. But she knew he was right. If something happened to him, which was very likely at this rate, then someone needed to be there to help Asterossa.
Typhon stood back up and patted her on the head. "Be well." He made his way out of the tower, and Sting took a deep breath and wiped her face before walking off towards the exit hidden in the back of the room.
Once outside, Typhon took a look around and saw that everyone seemed to be gone. It was likely that everyone was either already left, or making their way out of the kingdom. Which meant he could afford to call them now. He leapt up into the air and then flew over towards the kingdom gates. When he landed he took a deep breath and readied himself.
Having to face them again would be rough, in more ways than one. But there was no avoiding it, so he might as well just get it over with now.
He let loose the King's Call.
Every single monster in mewni sensed it at once. From the deepest depths of the ocean, to the highest clouds in the sky. Even those in the Underworld could feel the call being made by the King of Monsters. The apex of their kind was making it known that he was ready, and even inviting, any storm that was coming.
At the castle, Astro who had just finished sending back the blast, looked up in the direction of the monster Kingdom. He had felt the King's Call many times before, but he never felt it on this scale. Just what was his father doing? Fum winced and reached up to grab his head. "What's wrong?" breeze asked, moving towards him.
"It's Typhon…" Fum said. "He's… he's calling them." It wasn't like there were any words behind the call, but he could tell that it was being directed towards the Ten. It was like he was summoning them to him or something. And he wasn't the only one who felt it either. Everyone could tell who it was directed at.
Morel looked over towards Astro. "Hey mean, is your dad serious right now? I know he's the badass among monsters and all that, but if these guys are really as strong as they say he might be in trouble." His own father told him legends about the Ten, and after learning how strong Typhon himself was, he didn't doubt them.
Astro looked off with a worried expression. What exactly was his father planning? He pulled out his scissors and got ready to make a portal, but… they wouldn't work. He kept trying to swipe them, but they wouldn't open. He growled. "What did he do?" he muttered before rushing back into the castle. "Hekapoo!" He had a feeling it wasn't her doing this, but his father. And if that was a case, he needed to see if she could fix it.
Meanwhile, the Ten stood and looked towards the direction of the King's Call. "Looks like we're being summoned," Kyu said, narrowing her eyes. "He's finally out of hiding is he? What accurate timing."
"Indeed. There's more than a few words we need to share…" Echidna said.
Python grunted. "Well, best not keep my big brother waiting." With that, Argus snapped his fingers, and suddenly all of them went shooting off into the distance in a blinding beam of light. It was finally time for the long awaited family reunion.
Typhon stopped the call and then looked up in the air. He waited a bit, and after about a minute, he spotted the light shimmering up in the air. As it approached, it suddenly split apart into Ten, and Typhoon looked around to find himself surrounded by the Titanic looked around towards them all, and then smirked.
"Hello everyone. Long time no see…"
"I'm sorry, but I can't get it to open…"
"You're the scissor enforcers! How can you now be able to make them work?!"
Hekapoo frowned towards Asterossa, who was glaring at her. "He's probably using dark magic to shield the area from my abilities, okay? It's sort of out of my expertise," she said, placing her hands on her hips. "I might be able to get you close to there, but given how separated it is from the other kingdom I don't think you'll make it in time."
Omni looked more than a little worried. "Blast it! I knew this would happen! With him reunited with the rest of the Ten we have no chance at stopping them!" he said. The Ten were already dangerous enough on their own, but with Typhon… they'd be unstoppable.
"We should have crystallized him too!" Rhombulus said. "Now we're all gonna die!"
"Shut up!" Astro said growling towards him. "Just... ugh, useless! Every one of you!" He turned and began making his way back out. He had to hurry up and get back to his father before something terrible happened. If he really did end up joining them, that would be a whole new mess to clean up. And if he didn't… then there was no way he'd be able to face the Ten of them alone.
Before he could leave however, a figure stepped in the doorway. Astro stopped as he saw Sirius, the captain of the third division. "Hello there Asterossa," he said casually.
Astro slid to a stop right before he crashed into the boy. "Sirius? What are you doing here? You should be with the others organizing the defenses," he said.
Sirius put a hand on his chin. "I should, shouldn't I…? But I think there's something more important to do. Like keep you from leaving," he said casually.
"What?! What are you talking about?!"
"You have to stay here…"
"Sirius, get out of my way!"
He pushed past the boy, but then Sirus raised his hand up towards the middle of the room and spoke. "All-Seeing Eye." Astro stopped once more, and everyone's heads whipped towards where Sirius had pointed. A large eye appeared in the middle of the room, and Sirius stepped towards it.
Nia and Astro both looked towards him stunned. How in the world did he do that? The only ones who should have known about that spell were the members of the Butterfly family. "Show us Typhon," Sirius said pushing his glasses up. The All-Seeing Eye obliged, blinking and then opening back up to show the King of Monsters.
Everyone gasped when they saw he was surrounded by the Ten. "Oh no…" Nia muttered before turning towards Astro.
The boy went wide eyed. Was his father doing what he thought he was doing? He… he wasn't trying to fight them, was he? He had to know better than to think he could defeat all Ten of them. Where were his generals? Where was Sting? Why hadn't he called him there! This was suicide!
"You have quite a lot of explaining to do brother…"
Typhon hummed as he looked towards Python. "I know. I can only imagine how many questions you all have. Tell me, were you all conscious while you were sealed away as well, or did you just wake up?" he asked.
"The latter for us. It was quite a shock to wake up in an entirely different time. So you were conscious during all of these years?"
Typhon nodded. "More or less. I couldn't quite move as free as I liked, but I was able to sense what was happening outside. Eventually the seal began to loosen and I was able to move about the tower I was confined in. I only just got free a few months back," he explained. Orthrus rushed forward to greet the king, practically tackling him to the ground. Typhon smiled and began rubbing his head. "Hey there boy. I missed you too."
"Not too terribly it seems," Echidna said stepping forward. "You said you were conscious. That you could sense everything going on. Our defeat, all the activity of the tribes and kingdoms. Everything. Yet you've been free these past few months, and the kingdoms still stand. Why is that?"
Typhon looked toward her a frown on his face. "Because things… things changed. Believe me, I spend most of my time plotting and planning how I was going to avenge you all. Make them suffer for what they did. But then-"
"Then why didn't you?!" Gadfly snapped angrily. Unlike the others, he wasn't even trying to mask his anger. "Seriously pops! Just why?! Why wouldn't you go after them the second you broke out! Why wouldn't you get them back tenfold for everything they did! Why in the hell are the Commission and the royals all still alive?!"
"Gadfly-"
"The first thing I did when I heard you got taken out was rush in to avenge you! I was gonna send every last one of those bastards to hell in your name! And you just… you moved on! You forgot about us! You just decided to gather up this pitiful little heap of crap and call it a kingdom! And then what?! Live happily ever after?!"
Orthrus whimpered as he began to pick up on the vibe the others were giving off. He didn't know why everyone was so angry right now. They had found Typhon so he figured they would be happy. "Mewni has changed. Everything about it had changed, and there's more to this than just simple revenge," Typhon argued.
"Oh, we know," Scylla said, stepping forward. "As if sparing them wasn't enough, you had to gull to actually lay down with a Butterfly and spawn a child? What were you thinking? What possessed you to think conceiving with someone from that family was a good idea? You practically gifted wrapped someone with all of your abilities and their magic right to them."
Typhon glared. "My son isn't a weapon being used by them. He's admired by both the monsters and the mewmans. He someone who can bridge-"
"Your son. You say that with such pride," Echidna said, narrowing her eyes. "Before the very thought of having a child frightened you. And now… well, it seems all it took was a mewman woman to change your mind."
Typhon looked back towards her with a frown. "I deserved that…"
"You deserve far worse," Kyu said dangerously. "Where's my son?" Typhon flinched. He knew the topic would come up eventually, but he figured they would have connected the dots. "He's alive you know. We check with Lus. They never heard his soul."
Now Typhon actually looked surprised. "What? No, that's impossible!"
"No, it's not actually. I'm sure had you asked they would have told you. But I doubt you ever bothered to check. You never bothered to confirm what happened to any of us. I guess it was just easier that way," Kyu said, walking towards him. "You once swore to me that if they ever laid a finger on my son's head, you'd offer you head to atone. And I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to call you on it."
Typhon actually winced at that one. He didn't know if his nephew was really still alive or not. It just didn't seem possible. He'd never been able to pick back up on the link he had with him before. But… Kyu was right. Hadn't really put his best into finding out. He assumed that he was gone, and he figure even if he forced the truth out of the Commission he wouldn't like what he heard.
He sighed. "You're right. You have every right to be angry with me," he said looking around at them. "I failed you, more times than I care to count. But this doesn't have to be like it was before. The mewman Queen that rules now, she isn't like the others. She truly chases peace. She has long before I was free."
"How many times do they have to stab you in the back before you get it?!" Scylla shouted at him. "You being such a dope is what landed us in the war in the first place! You should have taken out the Commission then and there! We all told you, over and over again, to just end it! But you kept going after peace! Mewmans don't want peace, they want blood! It's their nature!"
"I've established a kingdom, I've made a home for us that hasn't been touched by any of the royals! To start another conflict would threaten-!"
"This isn't a kingdom," Echidna said, hissing at him. "This… this is nothing! Our home, our territory, used to span all across mewni! Now it's practically infested by mewmanity! Most of the tribes are shadows of their former selves! And you expect us to settle for this pitiful land that the Butterfly's have simply forgotten about?!"
Typhon looked over towards Kruger and Branch. "And you… what about you two? Are you also willing to commit to conflict? To a war that would spill the blood of countless innocent people?" he asked. They had been the only ones who had never voiced any complaint about his methods in the past. If anyone could see the reason, it was them.
Kruger looked down at the ground. "Typhon, you know I've always tried to do the right thing. The just thing. But mewmanity had time and time again proven just why they don't deserve the benefit of the doubt. And when I look around now, I see it's all still the same. I understand your situation, truly I do. But… it's not just to do nothing. We have to fix things. We have to restore everything to how it was. We have to act."
The demon really did wish he could take the chance and believe what his friend was saying, but just looking at his 'kingdom' was all he needed to see to make his decision. Inaction was one of the greatest sins in his book, and it was clear Typhon's inaction had cost monster-king quite a bit.
"I don't fault you for wanting peace, and I certainly don't fault you for finding love after we were gone. I know this is a terrible situation you've been put in," Branch said. He knew with his son being part of the Butterfly family, he had to have been split on this issue. "Still, when I see just how much of mewni has been torn down. How far they've expanded. This has to be stopped. If the mewmans really do want peace, they'll meet our terms. And if not..."
Matrona stomped her foot. "Why are we even discussing this?! If the kingdoms had pulled even half of what they did back then, you wouldn't have thought twice about wiping them out!" she argued. "There was a time where your brother had to practically beg you not to step on the battlefield, and now you're pleading for us not to?! Have you truly lost your sense of pride?! Your warrior instinct?!"
Argus grunted. "Truthfully, I don't care one way or the other how the conflict plays out. I want to find Kitsune of course, but whatever happens after that, just happens. Still, I think you place far too much trust in my little brother's children. He's a fool, and a half-ass of a father," the eldery monster said.
Typhon reached up and palmed his face. He could understand why they felt this way. Truly he could. Hell, a part of him felt this way. He was tempted to just agree and go along with them. But he couldn't. He knew whatever terms they came up with, the mewmans would never agree with. They'd go to war, and he'd have to wipe them out.
His son's allies, friends, families. He'd have to end them one by one. And he'd never be able to look him in the eyes again. "I understand big brother. I do," Python said walking forward. "Despite my anger, I see why you're doing this. You're acting as a father, which I understand." He reached up and patted him on the shoulder.
"But this is happening. We will announce our terms to the mewmans, and they will follow them or be destroyed. Now those terms can come from you, or from me. But they're coming either way," Python clarified. "Go, grab your son and your subjects. Lock them away if you have to. You won't even have to dirty your hands with this. Just step aside and let us take the lead."
Typhon looked up at Python, who gave him a sympathetic look. For all of his anger and resentment, he still couldn't just ignore that they were brothers. "You look tired brother. You've been leading monster-kind in the only way you've known how for so long, and that burden has finally dragged you down. Let us take it from you," Python said.
Typhon grunted. "I truly must be a pitiful sight…" he muttered, his voice sounding rather exhausted. He suddenly spread his wing out, his eyes turning back. Python was blown back a few feet, and grit his teeth as he looked back up at his brother. "How pitiful I must look for you to actually look at me with pity! With sympathy!"
He stomped his foot, and the ground shook. "Have you forgotten just who I am?! Treating me as if I'm some naive old fool who's past his prime! I am the King of Monsters! I have stated my stance on this matter, and my stance is FINAL!" he roared angrily. "The leadership of monster kind is not your burden to bear! It's mine! And soon to be my son's! I won't have you ruin everything he's strived for!"
Python glared back at him, his own eyes turning black. "So, you really do intend to stand against us. Is this really how you intend for it to end for you big brother?" Python asked.
"I don't intend for anything to end!" Typhon said as he crouched down and got ready to lunge at him. "If you won't listen to my words, you'll listen to my might!"
He ran towards Python, who charged back at him. The two clashed, and it felt as if thunder shook through all of mewni itself.
A/N: Typhon's clash with the Ten is here! Of course this wasn't gonna be able to be smoothed over with words. At the end of the day titans respect might. And they didn't really want to hear Typhon's excuses or reasons in the first place. Next chapter will be packed with a lot of action and dialogue! The Ten are done airing their grievances! So, how to you think Typhon will fair again the Ten? How will Astro and the others react? What is this gonna mean for the future on mewni?! Gonna have to keep reading to find out!
