Chapter 11
Roxanne slid into the backseat of the invisible car with the three blue cubes of paint bombs and a bottle of water making sure to keep them away from each other for the time being. Megamind slid into the backseat next to her and gave her a wide smile. She could practically feel the excitement coming off of him. Minion got in the driver seat and turned around in his bowl to look questioningly at Megamind. Megamind waved for him to go ahead and Minion turned back around.
Roxanne was once again wearing the yellow-lens goggles. She had the motorcycle helmet, but wasn't going to put that on until it was time to leave the car. When Minion started the car, she fully expected the lenses to go solid like they did last time. She was very surprised when they failed to do so. Minion put the car in gear and started heading for a solid wall. She felt Megamind gently grasp her hand and she glanced at him sitting there calmly as the car got closer to the wall. She gasped as it seemed they were about to crash, but instead the wall rippled as the hood passed through it. Then they were outside.
She looked sharply over at Megamind and saw a mischievous glint in his eye and a sly smile. She knew that he knew she could see. He was giving his secret location to her?! She quickly turned and looked back to see if she recognized the building. She knew that place! It used to be a bottling facility. She turned back around to notice the streets. She got her bearings pretty quickly, turned back to Megamind and found that she was speechless. She had absolutely nothing that she could give him that would compare to the gesture he just made.
Megamind leaned close to her ear and whispered, "Do you like it?" His breath right there sent tingles down her spine. She still didn't know quite what to say, so as he was pulling back, she placed her hands on his cheeks and pulled him into a kiss.
She quickly deepened it and ran her tongue along his. His arms snaked around her back and pulled her closer. She brought her hands down from his cheeks and rubbed his chest over his clothes. When she pulled back for air, he started letting his kisses trail along her jaw-line. Her head fell back to give him greater access and, being the genius he was, he took the hint and started kissing her neck. His goatee just barely brushed against her and sensitized her skin making each brush of his lips more electrifying. She ran one hand up and down his side and let the other slip behind his back under his cape. She made a pleased moan when he touched upon a sensitive spot on her neck. Apparently his own curiosity took over and he continued to kiss, lick and even nibble that spot to see what other noises she would make. She made a particularly loud moan when they were interrupted.
"Ahem!" Minion said loudly startling them both. Roxanne and Megamind both jumped and pulled away from each other slightly. "I don't mind this relationship, Sir. Miss Ritchi. But I could really do without seeing mammalian mating rituals in person. Especially while I'm driving."
Roxanne looked down and bit her lip. "Sorry, Minion," she apologized. She felt flushed with a combination of excitement and embarrassment. She glanced at Megamind and saw that he was just as flushed as she felt.
"Sir, did you want to go over tonight's plans? Miss Ritchi, have you discussed tomorrow evening with Sir?" he prompted the both of them. Probably attempting to distract them in an effort ease his own discomfort.
"The courthouse job won't raise a sweat," he brushed off. "Roxanne, you have plans for tomorrow?" he asked, obviously interested in the answer.
She knew this had the potential to be a sensitive subject, so she placed her hands on top of his and looked up at him, "Well, since everyone in Metrocity thinks I'm dating Metro Man, I thought it was about time we broke up. All public-like. I drop off the radar for a couple weeks, supposedly heartbroken. He's seen with another girl or two and gets gossip circulating again. And maybe the backlash won't be as bad when we go public." She wondered if he noticed that she adjusted her pronunciation of the city to match his.
"Are you sure, Roxanne?" he asked softly. "That's an awfully big step."
"So was giving me the location to your Evil Lair," she replied with a smile. "Besides, that 'going out with Metro Man' thing has been a thorn in my side for years. It's way past time I've done something about it." She smirked a bit, "I think I'll throw my drink in his face. He'll understand. And it will hurt less than a slap."
Megamind smirked in reply and said, "I would like to see that. I bet that doesn't happen often to Metrocity's hero."
She laughed, "Probably not. Why don't you two come? We'll be at Chez Roux. You can use the watches and sit at a different table. That way, you'll know when I'm ready and we can leave together."
"What do you think, Minion? Want to go out to eat tomorrow?" Megamind asked his friend.
"Sure thing, Boss," Minion replied from the front seat.
They sat in companionable silence for a while before Megamind asked Roxanne, "Did you mean it?"
Her thoughts had drifted off to what she was going to say during her fake break-up the following evening, so she had to ask, "Did I mean what?"
"About us. Going public," he gripped her hand and was looking at her intently.
She brought their hands up and placed them over her heart, "I'll keep your secrets, Megamind, but I don't want to hide who I'm with. I mean it," she reiterated.
"There will be problems," he warned.
"And when has either of us backed down from a challenge? Let's not borrow trouble and just figure it out as we go along," she suggested.
"Sir," Minion interrupted, "We're arriving."
"Excellent, Minion!" Megamind said excitedly and started pulling his gloves on. For some reason, he had taken to not wearing them unless he was 'working.' She smiled and put on her own borrowed gloves and helmet. Megamind drew his de-gun and rolled down the window without Minion slowing down at all. He shot out the window at the empty toll booth that was blocking their way and, after a flash of blue light, it transformed into a little blue cube. The car ran through the spot the booth occupied just a second after it vanished.
Megamind laughed triumphantly as he raised the window and Minion smiled widely. Minion pulled up near a door and came to a stop. He reached over and touched the small computer screen beside him a few times and announced, "Stealthbots are active, Sir." Megamind leaned over into the front seat to see the readout on the small monitor.
"We'll need to move fast, Roxanne. Ready?" Megamind said while staring at the screen. "Ok, let's move!" he opened his door and hopped out. Roxanne followed as he brandished his de-gun toward a door ahead of them. There was a flash of orangey-yellow light and the door burst inwards revealing a set of stairs. Roxanne followed Megamind up the stairs with Minion bringing up the rear.
When they got to the door leading to the first floor, Megamind turned to look at Roxanne and put a finger to his lips. He leaned over and silently pushed the door open. He looked through the gap before pushing it open further. He froze, looking intently at something and slowly brought his de-gun up. He changed the setting without looking and edged it through the half-open doorway. There was a flash of red light, and then he visibly relaxed. He looked back and motioned the two of them forward.
Roxanne entered the door and looked around. There was a security guard slumped over against a wall, apparently asleep. Megamind walked past the man unconcerned. Roxanne stopped and knelt by him to check his pulse. She was sure he was alright, but she wanted to double check. She relaxed fractionally when she finally found his pulse going strong. It was harder than she thought locating it while wearing the gloves, but she managed. She stood and walked over to where her boys were examining the metal detector and the bag x-rayer.
"Looks like we'll need the entire set-up, Sir. It's all connected," Minion said.
"At least it's all self-contained. Stand back, Minion," he looked up and noticed her standing there. He walked over and twirled his gun around in his hand and held the handle out to her. "Care to do the honors, my dear?" He stood beside her and gently placed the gun in her hand. He stepped behind her to help guide her.
"Check the setting," he nearly purred in her ear as he brought an arm around her to guide her hands through the movements. "Feel that button there? That acts as a safety. Push and hold, and it primes the de-gun to fire." She saw the gold bars around the glass tube flare out and the glass started to glow that familiar blue color. "Line up your target with the sight," he continued in her ear and guided her hand accordingly. "Now gently squeeze the trigger."
She did as he instructed and a blue beam of light shot out of the end of the de-gun they were both holding. The metal detector and the bag x-ray thing briefly glowed blue then vanished. On the floor was a small blue cube. Minion picked it up and placed it in a compartment inside his suit.
"Very nicely done, my dear," he said softly and moved to put the gun away. "Come, Minion!" he called and reached down to hold her hand as they left the building.
She slid into the backseat of the invisible car which was actually invisible right now. It was just a little bizarre seeing a car interior just floating in midair like that. But then again, it was slightly bizarre knowing that she had just participated in a burglary and had shot one of Megamind's ray guns under his direction. She decided to put those thoughts in the ever-growing 'I'm not going to think about that right now' section of her brain as Megamind slid in beside her and Minion jumped in the front seat. Sometimes he could be a lot more agile than that suit would lead one to believe.
"We all set, Sir?" Minion asked while starting the engine.
"Punch it, Minion!" Megamind exclaimed, still excited by their heist. Minion stomped on the gas and they roared out of the underground garage with Megamind laughing all the while. His laughter was infectious and Roxanne couldn't help but smile. "How far 'til the next stop?" Megamind asked when he quit snickering.
"I'd say about five minutes, Sir."
"For Joselyn's paint bombing?" Roxanne asked. Then laughed softly and shook her head, "I still can't believe that you talked me into this. You wicked, evil man!" she punctuated her last sentence with playful slaps on his arm.
"You say the sweetest things," Megamind told her with wide grin.
"Minion, can't you make him behave?" she asked with a sly glance at Megamind.
"Sir can be very persuasive," Minion dodged the question.
"Not behaving is lesson one for being ee-vil, Miss Ritchi," Megamind replied while holding a finger up to demonstrate his point.
"Is lesson two vandalism?" she asked with a raised eyebrow.
Megamind playfully gasped and held a hand to his chest, "Minion! She has figured out our latest ee-vil plan!"
"What plan? To show me the evil ropes?" she asked while trying not to laugh.
"I believe you are well-acquainted with the ee-vil ropes, my dear," he told her with an honest-to-god eyebrow waggle.
She couldn't help but laugh at that and give him a gentle push as she said, "Oh, my God! You are so into bondage, aren't you? I should've seen that coming a mile away. Just not the first time!" she warned with a raised finger. She saw Megamind flush a little purple and heard a strangled noise come from Minion. She smiled in triumph and conceded, "I will admit that the leather looks sexy on you though."
She felt the car slow down and saw they were in another parking garage. Minion stopped and said, "Sir, the car you're looking for is that silver BMW taking up two spaces. I'll keep the car running." Roxanne saw that, sure enough, the Beamer was straddling the line that separated two parking spaces. People who parked like that always irritated her.
"Ooh… Daddy has money. Or some sugar daddy does anyway," Roxanne commented. She suddenly didn't feel so bad for what she was about to do. Megamind gave her that manic grin she used to only see during kidnappings and grabbed her hand as he slid out of the car pulling her along with him.
When she was outside the car, he handed her his de-gun again. "Dehydrate the cars on either side of hers. It'll seem more diabolical if they're perfectly fine in the morning."
She took the de-gun from him and checked the settings. She took aim at one of the cars next to Little Miss Hotshot's and pulled the trigger. She lined up her next shot on the car on the other side and dehydrated that one too.
"You are a natural, my dear," Megamind said as he took the gun from her. He handed her the bottle of water and the three little blue cubes that was holding their ammunition. She put the cubes on the ground.
"I've never seen this end of things," she commented. "How much water do they need?"
"A splash usually does the trick," Megamind informed her. She listened to the voice of experience and poured some of the water out of the bottle onto the cubes. There was a flash of blue light and there were the boxes they had loaded up with paint-filled balloons. Megamind bent and picked up two. He extended one towards her and said, "Ladies first."
She slowly reached out, took the green balloon he offered her and was filled with doubts again. She looked around and verified that they were the only ones around. Then she allowed herself to remember every vindictive thing that little bitch had ever said to her or behind her back.
"That was explosion residue, you little self-centered bottle blonde," she growled in response to a certain memory and threw the balloon without thinking. As the splash of red paint erupted over the silver car, she was handed another balloon-shaped missile. She hurled it at the car as she said, "Who cares if I'm wearing last season's shoes!" That one exploded in metallic blue and another balloon was placed in her hands. "You wear long hair when you get dangled and flown around so much!" there was a splash of black paint that time. Another balloon was handed to her. She hurled it and said, "My hips aren't big, I'm curvy!" as a lime green spot covered the windshield. Another balloon appeared in her hands. She hurled it and said, "I know you helped get me fired!" there was an accompanying white splash.
She shortly descended into "Take that! And that!" while Megamind silently slipped her one balloon after another. Soon, she was laughing as the paint balloons hit, even if it was a little maliciously. Apparently, that was what he was waiting for. Once she was laughing, he started throwing balloons too and laughing along with her. When he joined, that turned her malicious laughter to genuine laughter.
They began complimenting each other's splatter patterns and started showing off while trying to do some trick shots. At one point they ended up on opposite sides of the car and they each got splashed by the other. Only Minion's intervention prevented them from turning the paint balloons on each other instead of their target by pleading on behalf of the interior of the invisible car.
Eventually, they ran out of ammunition. Megamind rehydrated the cars on either side of the now multi-colored car. Roxanne covered her finger in a piece of broken balloon and wrote 'Learn 2 Park' on the back window. When they had finished their cleanup, they both jumped into the back of the invisible car as Minion took off.
Roxanne was laughing so hard she was having trouble breathing. She took off her helmet and goggles while still doubled over with laughter. Eventually she leaned back and took a large breath in and out to stop the giggles.
"Wow. That. Was therapeutic," she conceded as she smiled broadly at Megamind. She sat up and leaned forward as a thought hit her. "Hey! Can we have a brainbot record her reactions when she sees her car? I would love to see her face!"
"Absolutely, Roxanne!" Megamind told her with a grin just as wide as hers. He leaned into the front seat and did something on the computer screen that was in the dash. He leaned back and said, "One of the stealthbots has been dispatched. We'll have footage shortly after she sees her car."
"Nice," she said and turned in the seat to face her blue beau. "So, stealthbot? I've heard you mention them, have I seen one?"
"They wouldn't be very stealthy if they just showed themselves to people, now would they?" he teased. She squinted her eyes at him suspiciously and he laughed before replying, "They're modified brainbots. They have the same stealth technology as the car and are better equipped to go unnoticed."
"You know," she said as the thought occurred to her, "a lot of your inventions I've seen recently have tended to be pretty subtle. I wouldn't have thought that was your style."
"It's not always giant battle robots and deadly laser light shows, my dear Roxanne. I don't knock down a wall every time I escape from prison. I can be subtle," he protested.
"Hmm… maybe… I just never put you and subtle in the same room," she admitted.
She saw that they were nearing the lair and took the opportunity to watch them arrive. Minion headed towards a brick wall and showed no signs of slowing down. She couldn't help but gasp when the front edge of the car hit the wall, but instead of crashing, the wall rippled and they slid right through. Minion slowed the car down and stopped in the usual spot in the garage part of the lair. He flipped a few switches and turned the car off.
"Ah, there's no place like Evil Lair," Megamind said grandly as he slid out of the car. Roxanne followed and had to mentally agree that she had never been any place like it.
She sidled up next to him as he was giving Minion some instructions and whispered in his ear, "I meant it earlier. I'll be waiting for you." She grinned mischievously as he stuttered. She couldn't help it and gave his ear a playful lick before walking away. She made sure to not look back and to add a little extra sway to her steps as a tease.
She sauntered to her designated bedroom and opened the door. Once inside she changed as quickly as she could, which wasn't very fast at all. After she peeled herself out of the clingy leather pants, she slipped into a pair of comfy shorts and a spaghetti-strap tank top.
She looked down at the dried paint still staining her fingers from when they filled the balloons, and then the pile of discarded leather clothes. What was she doing? She had never been interested in thievery or vandalism for anything more than a story. And yet, she had participated in both tonight. And it was fun. She had volunteered for the thievery portion of the night and put up more of a fight over going on vacation than she did for vandalizing Joselyn's car. She smirked as she remembered the newly painted BMW and found that she was anticipating seeing the footage of Joselyn's reaction. This was wrong. Responsible adults don't steal, vandalize, or plot revenge.
But then again, what did being a 'responsible adult' get her? She was fired from a job she was good at, robbed, no real friends, lovers, or children. Although, that could be pinned on her being a repeated kidnapping victim. But what did it say about her that she always looked forward to the kidnappings? She put up an air of indifference, but she was always amazed by what Megamind could come up with. And then to be at the center of the mostly epic battles was always a thrill with just that hint of danger. There was a reason she always pushed to the front of crowds of reporters to get a Metro Man interview when she was starting out.
This last week she had loosened the societal reigns a little and definitely was not behaving in a 'responsible manner.' And she has to admit that she's had more fun than she's had in years. She and Megamind were beginning what could only be described as a whirlwind romance. She could honestly say that she would seriously consider becoming his 'Evil Queen' if he brought it up as early as yesterday. She felt free to be herself around him, which was a major plus. When she got sarcastic, he gave as good as he got and they had fun doing it. She shot a ray gun for crying out loud, and she suspected that he was making her one of her very own. She even got revenge on two different people that had wronged her. Sure, one was petty, but it still counted.
And she could not remember the last time she had smiled as much. That must mean she's happy. Maybe she always chaffed a little at the rules and never even realized it. If being a little less of a 'responsible adult' made her happy, where was the harm in that?
A hesitant knock on the door interrupted her thoughts. She quickly gave herself a little spritz of lavender scented body spray and ran her fingers through her hair as she went to answer the door.
