Died Last Night

1 Redesign

Sam frowned down at his notebook, tapping his pen on the table in front of him. He'd been doodling in his notebook since first period, not really paying attention. They were heading into January and things had been calm for nearly a month. None of them were sure why though. It was driving Dani up the wall. He swapped pens and began filling in the black on the design in front of him. He'd been thinking about Dani's costume for a while now. It was very recognizable once you got close enough as one of the jumpsuits the elder Fenton's wore practically religiously. It was dangerous for her to be wearing something so recognizable so he'd been thinking about making her something else.

Honestly he wasn't even sure if it would work. He had no idea if it Dani could change clothes as a ghost really. She'd managed it as Lady Death when she'd been briefly forced to work for Freakshow. But he honestly wasn't sure if she would want to change her outfit. He sighed as he colored in around the symbol he'd drawn on the center of Dani's top. He'd left her face blank, last thing any of them needed was someone to figure them out from a doodle in his notebook. He'd sketched in a vest and frowned switching pens again. He was trying to decide if the vest should remain white or if he should make it green. It would be a good accent color for her outfit. Sam had been altering his own clothes for years. His parents insisted on shopping for him every once in a while so he'd been fixing them up to be something he would actually wear for years. It had given him a bit of an interest in fashion design, one he knew his mother would never approve of. Honestly that really only made him more interested in pursuing it but that wasn't what he was thinking about right now. He tapped his pen on the notebook again. He wasn't really paying attention as Lancer spoke, that was until someone sat down sideways in the chair in front of him. He looked up and frowned. Paulina was sitting in front of him looking at him expectantly.

"Well?" She demanded. He frowned.

"What do you want?" He demanded. She rolled her eyes at him.

"We're supposed to be working on Shakespeare together. Lancer just broke us into groups. The hell are you working on anyway?" She asked yanking his notebook from him before he could react. She blinked down at the drawing and Sam's heart dropped. What if she figured it out? What if she remembered something from her time possessed by Kitty? She looked up a gleam in her eyes.

"You like the ghost girl too?" She demanded lowly, glancing around to make sure no one was listening. Sam blinked. He couldn't think of anything else to do so he nodded. Paulina grinned. "I think she's so cool! I love this outfit redesign! Were you thinking about a color for the vest?" She demanded, seeming to have forgotten completely about Shakespeare.

"I was thinking green." He said and Paulina nodded.

"Did you know her eyes are green?" Paulina sounded almost like she was bragging. Sam shook his head.

"Never seen her up that close, honestly." Sam lied. No one was supposed to have really seen Phantom up close. The only exceptions being Angelica Foley, Paulina and Officer Devlin Wulfric. Sam still didn't exactly agree with Dani having gone to speak with the officer as Phantom since it was his job to catch her and he seemed determined to find out who she was, or rather had been. Paulina grinned smugly.

"I have, she saved my life twice." She bragged. "I think you should make the vest green! It'll bring out her eyes!" Paulina commented digging in her bag and pulling out a pencil case. She pulled a green colored pencil out of it and handed it to Sam. She glanced at the clock on the wall. "You finish that I'll read you the assignment." Sam's eyes narrowed.

"Why, you hate me." He asked bluntly. Paulina rolled her eyes and glanced around again.

"Don't get used to it, but I don't find many people who don't think the ghost girl is a menace. So I've got to cultivate it! She's so cool!" Paulina said picking up the assignment paper. "So we're supposed to be reading a betrayal scene from Shakespeare. It's supposed to teach us… I honestly don't know what the fuck it's supposed to teach us, something about betrayal I guess." Sam rolled his eyes as he ran the tip of the colored pencil over his paper. They managed to make it through the assignment rather quickly, as Sam finished coloring his rendering. He hoped Dani would like it. Paulina did but that meant almost nothing, they in no way had similar taste. As the bell rang Paulina snapped a photo of the design and grinned as she handed in their finished assignment. Dani caught up to Sam with a frown.

"You good?" She asked and Sam nodded.

"Yeah, it was weird working with Paulina though." He said closing his notebook. He didn't want Dani to see the design yet. Not until it was finished. They split up after school, Tanya had a family dinner she was dragging Dani to and Sam wanted to check and see if he could spend some time at the Skulk and Lurk. On his way to the bookshop he spotted a poster for a movie and grinned.

"I need to remember to get tickets for that." He reminded himself, pulling out his phone to order three tickets for the horror extravaganza. He didn't see something float out of the poster behind her, or notice the figure looming behind him. The ghostly woman tilted her head after him.

"Perhaps the wrong friend made a wish last time. Let's see what this one truly desires." Desiree whispered with a smile.
