The forest was thick, and every step produced a scrunch of leaves that threatened to reveal them to the enemy. Not that there would be, as Zed assured him the patrols never reached this far into the forest, but no artist can work unprepared. He kept Whisper loaded even as he kept it concealed beneath his cloak, just in case. Jhin glanced up at the sky for what was perhaps the third time since they arrived. "Magnificent." He whispered, admiring the moon as it bled over the landscape. Through the curtain of the trees, the bright red was diluted to dull tones as it colored the undergrowth, turning Jinx's cyan locks to a tint of ink blue.
"Hey, are we there yet?" Jinx asked impatiently. "We've been going for hours and my feet hurt. When can we start running around and blowing stuff up?" She glanced at the trees around her hungrily. "Like these trees…"
"You want to start a forest fire with us in it?" Jhin asked dryly, her usual remarks no longer getting much reaction from him.
"Don't look at me, they insulted Fishbones!"
He regarded her for a moment. "Wait until we're outside of the forest."
"Promise?"
"Of course." He said, knowing full well she'd completely forget about it once they got to the city square. "We should be getting close." To punctuate his words, a glowing ball of fire screamed into the air, blooming into a colorful explosion.
Jinx was transfixed. "Fireworks?! You guys have everything!" She started to bolt in the direction of the firework, but Jhin was quicker.
His hand shot out and grabbed her arm. "Wait, after the mission."
Jinx pouted. "Seriously?"
"It is imperative. The entire reason we're here. The performance must not be spoiled."
"Can't we have fun first?"
"All you have to do is point your rocket at a building and fire when I give the signal."
"Oh, right." Her expression brightened almost immediately. "Forgot. Let's get going!" She started to run in a slightly different direction, but Jhin held her fast. "Hey what gives?"
"Do you know where the building is?"
"Yeah, duh."
"Where then?"
"Ha, I thought you liked to plan stuff. I can't believe you forgot."
"I didn't forget." Jhin replied patiently. "I am merely confirming that you in fact remember the location."
"I already told you that I did."
"Then you can tell me what it is."
Jinx side-eyed Jhin. "Oh I get it. You forgot and are trying to save face by asking me if I know it."
"Jinx, we're on a tight schedule. Stop fooling around and tell me your target."
"Look, if you don't remember you can just admit it. There's nobody else around but Fishbones and Pow-Pow, and they won't tell a soul I promise."
Jhin let out an exasperated breath.
"I got it! On the count of three we'll both say it. One, two, three!"
"The storage building." Jhin replied.
Jinx nodded in approval. "Okay, you do remember. Let's carry on then."
Jhin let her go with a noise of disapproval, but she didn't seem to notice as she practically skipped her way through the woods, darting from tree to tree, miraculously not getting her hair tangled at any point.
"Check it out Jhin! I'm a ninja!"
Ignoring her antics, he caught up to her where the tree line broke. Though he did not pass the tree line, he took time to admire the massive capital building and the shadow it cast over the landscape. It sat between them and the bustling city square, and hid them well. Any patrols would expect them to appear in the courtyard, where all the high value targets would be.
As Jhin and Jinx walked along the side of the capital building, he couldn't help but chuckle. It was nearly true; all the high value targets would be in the courtyard, aside from Karma. Zed's client had assured him that Karma would be close enough to the supply depot to come running if something was amiss. "Oh Karma, if only you knew how valuable you were." Jhin whispered as he ran his hands along Whisper to check its alignment one final time. He turned to Jinx as the storage building came into view. It lay in the shadow of the back of the capital building, and was made of wood instead of the ornate marble that its older sibling boasted. However, the wood was made of some of the finest material that Ionia had to offer. "Jinx, you will be firing at that building when I give the signal."
"What's inside?"
"Various items, including gunpowder." He said, gauging her reaction.
Jinx's eyes widened, and it took all her willpower to keep from pulling out Fishbones to set off the explosions prematurely. "What's the signal?"
Jhin nodded to the traps strapped to Jinx's belt. "They are. The depot is not being guarded at the moment, as the guard is changing shifts. You are to sneak inside and drop those traps just behind the door, then come back here."
"So they'll get caught right next to the building as it explodes?" She giggled. "I take it back, you're not that boring."
"Not quite. By the time they open the door it'll be too late. You are to set those traps to go off within the hour, but no sooner."
"What? This will all take an hour?" Jinx looked disappointed.
"No, they will serve as bait. When they approach the building, they'll hear the ticking and investigate."
"Wouldn't they go over there anyway?"
"No, because I'm going to give them a reason to come outside with Karma. The purpose of your trap is to lure a few guards closer to that door, then once they are on the doorstep, fire. Do you understand?"
Jinx scratched her head. "I suppose."
"Then repeat it back to me."
She thought for a moment. "Put traps in the door, then wait till the guards are about to open the door!"
"Then let us set the stage for Karma's final performance."
