"Tzipora, Cora, Helga and Einar!" Rose said loudly as she entered the apartment building. Rose had just got back from rehearsal. Tzipora was cooking dinner, Cora was doing some homework problems, and Helga was breastfeeding Einar.
"Yes?" Asked Tzipora and Cora, Helga just looked up to Rose.
"Look!" Rose said with a smile. Rose had received a poster from rehearsal that day. "Look, the Van Damme Follies, featuring Titanic survivor Rose Dawson. I am headlining the entire Follies!"
"You're a star!" Tzipora said, walking away from the pot and towards the poster. Cora's eyes widened when she saw Rose's face on the top right corner of the poster. "Does this come with a pay raise?"
"I don't know, paychecks come Friday." Rose said with a smile. "I can't believe I am actually starring in the most famous follies in the world. If I had known that when I arrived at Ellis Island... I mean... This is just incredible. I'm a Van Dame, a Flanagan Sister, and now a true starlet."
"Famous?" Helga mispronounced, then she pulled the English-Norwegian dictionary that the WTU gave her. Cora looked over at the point and helped her find the right word. "Ah, berømt! Famous er berømt!"
"Tzipora, Cora, how was school?" Rose asked as she walked over to Helga to the give three-month-old Einar a small punch on his cheeks.
"It was great!" Cora said with a smile before looking down at her paper.
"She is incredibly intelligent." Tzipora whispered to Rose. "If your career keeps taking off we could get Cora a real education."
"How's the protesting?" Rose asked as Tzipora continued cooking.
"We're going to a courthouse in two days. Also, I met someone." Tzipora said, her lips curled into a smile as she blushed.
"Who?" Rose asked with a twinkle in her eyes.
"His name is Joseph Goldman. He showed up at the protest last week, he didn't join us because he didn't want to, I guess, 'steal the spotlight' from us. Anyways, Joseph offered his support, and he plans on showing up in two days." Tzipora said, still smiling. "He's a clerk at a hardware store."
"That's wonderful!" Rose said. Rose walked past Cora, rubbing the top of her head as she continued her homework. Then, Rose sat down next to Helga who was buttoning her blouse. "Einar seems to be doing well, he looks like both of you."
"Yes, that is so." Helga said, looking down at her baby. "Einar have... Ummm, has... brown hair, very brown hair, um dark hair and eyes, like Fabrizio. Einar has curly hair like me."
"You are right." Rose said, looking at Einar. Then Rose gave Helga a kiss on her cheek. "I'm glad that I can help you. Helga what is today's date?"
"April 13, 1913." Helga said, then her face fell. "April 14 is tomorrow. The... anniversary of Titanic is tomorrow."
The next day, Rose had another performance, her first performance as a headliner for the Van Damme Follies. The rehearsals leading up we're adding more and more to her act. She had her large, chorus dance numbers, the folly reels sung by the redheaded Flanagan Sisters, and her melodramatic, depressing, show stopping lament, but now she had many others.
Mr. Steichen added a lengthy ballet solo, a second melodramatic solo, and even an acting skit with some fellow soloists. Rose played a heartbroken woman in three strangely comedic sketches spread throughout the entire performance, the character's over the top grief serving as comic relief. Rose was constantly on stage, only the comedy duos and other solos were the only times she wasn't on stage.
"As many of you lovely folks in the audience know, today is the one year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic." The emcee was beginning to introduce Rose's first solo. Her stomach dropped when she was reminded of the date. "We are incredibly lucky to present to you, a bona fide Titanic survivor… Rose Dawson!"
The performance came and went, Rose ended up changing into her street clothes after two and a half hours. Rose was absolutely exhausted from the performance. Luckily, tonight was her only performance, most days two or even three were squeezed in. Then, Mr. Van Damme walked up to Rose as she left the theater.
"Ahh, Miss Dawson, you are truly a ticket selling machine. Even a year later folks are still interested in the Titanic." Mr. Van Damme told her. However, Rose's eyes began to water. Jack's face danced in her mind, and she thought of how Einar would never know his father. She remembered Jack's words, that she had to continue on living. "My apologies, Miss Dawson, I'll never understand what you've gone through. I'll try to be more... sensitive."
"Thank you for this opportunity Mr. Van Damme." Rose said before walking home.
