Chapter 9!
Witches, Demon Rabbits and Hank... Oh My!
Peter watched Hank distracting the monstrous Señor Scratchy, his friend was doing his best while Erik continued to construct the metal circle. The metal circle was beginning to resemble a makeshift collar, it seemed like they were planning to trap the demon bunny and maybe control it. Peter had never battled a monstrous demon rabbit before in his reality, he had no idea how they would control something bigger than the cupcake truck Darcy had been driving around Westview.
Hank continued dodging the demon rabbit's attacks, it wasn't long until Erik had completed the metal collar. Peter pulled his goggles over his eyes before he zoomed to his Father's side, he soon asked him where he wanted him. Erik told his Son to help Hank while he readied himself to catch Señor Scratchy, he needed them both to keep distracting the rabbit until he found the perfect opportunity to collar him.
Peter zoomed forward and stopped not far away from the demon rabbit, he whistled at Scratchy to get his attention while Hank perched himself on top of the now toppled over alter. The rabbit's gaze soon turned towards Peter, his crimson eyes set upon his next target. He slowly moved forward before a low growl escaped his mouth, he was leaving a trail of black drool not far behind him. Peter hadn't realised how big the demon rabbit was until he approached it, he was nearly as big as an elephant.
" Hey Cotton Tail, how's it hanging?!" Peter asked before he dodged a swipe of the rabbit's monstrous paw." Whoa! It seems like someone's gotten out on the wrong side of the haystack this morning!"
" Be careful, Peter!" Hank said.
" It's cool, I've got this..." Peter said.
Peter soon heard Erik's voice telling him to keep the rabbit in that exact position, he then told Hank stay where he was until he needed his assistance. Peter glanced over his shoulder for a brief second, he could see his Father levitating the makeshift collar on the same level as Señor Scratchy's head. Erik had torn part of the metal circle, it opened up and widened until it would be able to fit around the demon rabbit's neck.
" On the count of three." Erik said.
" One, two..." Peter said.
" Three!" Erik said.
Peter threw himself out of the way of the metal circle before it flew towards it's tended target, the metal collar clipped around Scratchy's neck when Erik clinched his fist. The demon rabbit squeaked violently and toppled over onto it's side, he wiggled around on the ground before he got back onto his four paws. He thrusted himself against the basement's wall, the ceiling above them began to crumble. Hank managed to maneuver himself out of the rabbit's way before he crashed into the alter, the demon rabbit wasn't too pleased with his new collar.
Peter got to his feet before he zoomed over to Hank, he grabbed hold of his teammate's arm and pulled him out of the way of some falling wooden beams. The demon rabbit was destroying the basement around them, the whole house above them may collapse on top of them if they weren't careful. But without any warning Señor Scratchy was lifted from the ground, he squeaked and kicked his back legs against the air.
Hank and Peter's attention was soon drawn to Erik, his hand was raised. He was the one who was levitating Señor Scratchy in the air, he was using the metal collar to control the supernatural creature. Peter moved out of the way with Hank when some more of the ceiling above them fell into the basement, they needed to get out of there before they got buried alive. Peter zoomed Hank towards the staircase of the basement, he let go of his friend's arm and looked back at Erik. His Father was lost in his own thoughts, he didn't even acknowledge Peter's voice when he told him to abort the fight.
" Erik, fall back!" Hank yelled.
" Dad, we need to get out of here!" Peter yelled.
Erik ignored his Son's pleas, he was too far gone. Peter hurried to Erik's side and grabbed hold of his arm, but his Father didn't even budge when he tried to led him up the staircase. His gaze was fixed on the demon rabbit, there was rage in his eyes. He was squeezing the life out of poor Señor Scratchy, he wanted the creature dead for some unknown reason.
" Dad, we need to split!" Peter said.
" Erik, stop it!" Hank yelled.
" Please don't kill it..." Peter begged.
Erik made eye contract with his Son before he lowered Señor Scratchy towards the ground, the rabbit didn't even move when he landed on the rumble. Peter watched some purple mist escaped the rabbit's mouth, the rabbit began to shrink and take it's normal rabbit form. The demon creature was now a cute little rabbit, but Peter wasn't going to take Señor Scratchy with him this time. The ceiling above them was partly missing, but they were now safe from Señor Scratchy.
" Let's get out of here..." Peter said.
Peter felt his Father's arm shaking, it seemed like his rageful moment was passing. Hank told them to move before he disappeared through the basement's doorway, he was soon followed by Peter and Erik. They kept on moving until the reached the sidewalk, there was hardly anyone around the street. Peter looked at his Father, he had concerns about what had just happened in Agnes's basement.
" Are you okay?" Peter asked.
" I'm fine..." Erik replied.
" What was that?" Peter asked, there was concern in his voice. " In the basement, we're you really going to kill Señor Scratchy?"
" I said I'm fine!" Erik snapped.
There was anger in Erik's voice, he wasn't himself. Peter planned not to question his Father anymore, it was the first time Erik had ever raised his voice at him. Erik glanced at his Son before he walked away from him, but he soon stopped outside Wanda's house. He stared at the house she once called her home, he told them both that they needed to find Wanda and the others. Peter couldn't agree more, he zoomed over to his Father's side and looked down the street when he heard an approaching vehicle. He broke out into a smile while he waved the vehicle down, it wasn't long until they heard a woman's voice yelling at them from the vehicle's open window.
" Sup losers?!" Darcy yelled.
" Darcy Lewis!" Peter smiled.
Darcy pulled the cupcake truck over to the kerb and rested her elbow on the window, she gave them a smile before she turned the truck's engine off. Hank and Erik approached the truck, but Darcy couldn't hide her thoughts about Hank's blue mutant form. She hadn't seem Hank in his beast mode, he had now learnt how to control his mutation at will without the vaccine he had created decades ago.
" Whoa, who's the fur rug?!" Darcy asked.
" Excuse me?!" Hank asked.
" It's cool, she's weird." Peter replied.
" That explains a lot..." Hank said.
Peter patted Hank's shoulder before a low growl escaped his lips, it seemed like Darcy had hit a nerve. Darcy's sense of humour was different than most people he knew, but she seemed cool enough in Peter's eyes. Opening the door to the cupcake truck Peter quickly explained what had happened in Agnes's basement, he wanted Darcy to drive around the neighbourhood and see if she could find his friends.
" Got it, you can rely on me!" Darcy said before her gaze lingered on the street ahead of them. " Erm guys, we've got company!"
Everyone's attention was caught by what looked like an armored group of vehicles driving towards them, the solider guys Monica had told them about had somehow managed to get inside of the magical barrier Wanda had created. Peter slammed the truck's door shut, he told Darcy to get the hell out of here. But it wasn't long until Hank spotted some more armored vehicles driving down the other end of the street, they were trapped.
" Shit, I'm blocked in!" Darcy said.
" Don't worry, I've got this." Erik said before he walked into the middle of the street. " Get ready to drive."
" What are you planning to do?" Hank asked.
" What I do best." Erik replied.
Darcy started up the truck and reversed it into one of the house's driveways, she gave Erik a thumbs up and readied herself to get the hell out of there when the time was right. Peter cracked his knuckled and joined his Father's side, he was going to be ready in case any of the soldiers got in the way of the speeding cupcake truck. Hank crouched on the sidewalk, his gaze was fixed on the other end of the street. It seemed like the other armored vehicles were setting up a barrier, he could see soldiers with automatic weaponry.
" They're armed, be careful." Hank said.
" Don't worry, I can dodge bullets." Peter said.
Erik raised his hand and two of the approaching armored vehicle flipped over onto their sides. Darcy put her foot down and sped out of the driveway while Erik raised from the ground, he continued to move any armored vehicle that got in Darcy's way. Peter zoomed after the cupcake truck, he moved any injured soldiers out of the truck's pathway. But it wasn't long until he heard gunfire coming from the other end of the street, they were shooting at Erik and Hank.
Peter glanced at cupcake truck before it turned right out of Mapple Street, he was glad that Darcy was safely away from the choas unfolding at the other end of the street. He now had to get his Father and Hank to safety, but he was more worried about the soldiers since his Father was in Magneto mode. Zooming back along the street he took cover behind an overturned vehicle with Hank, but Erik on the other hand had a different idea. He used his mutant ability to halt the bullets in mid air, he then casted them to the ground.
" Erik, we need to get out of here!" Hank said.
" Hank's right, we need to find Monica and the boys!" Peter said before he peered over the vehicle's hood. " They may have run into some of these guys, they have the Darkhold too."
" You allowed them to take the Darkhold with them?!" Erik asked.
" Yeah, they were going to find Wanda!" Peter replied.
Erik landed back on his feet and looked along the street, it seemed like the soldiers were moving out. Their armored vehicles began to reverse and leave the street, but without any warning there was a flash of purple light behind them. Peter scrambled to his feet and shielded his eyes from the orange whirling light growing before them, he had no idea what was going on but the light looked familiar. The street before him looked like it had a teared in it, but a tall dark haired man soon emerged from the light before them.
The man stood before them, his red cloak draped it's self around his shoulders while the whirling light behind him began to fold in on it's self. The wind soon dropped and Mapple Street now resembled a normal suburban town, the last of the armored vehicles left the street. The man stood in silence, his blue eyes studying each and every single one of them in turn. Peter was about to say something, but Hank beat him to it.
" Stephen..." Hank said.
" Hank, it's a pleasure to see you again." Stephen said.
" What are you doing here?" Erik asked.
" I'm here to return you to your own reality before it's too late." Stephen replied, his speaking tone was serious. " I'm afraid to say Wanda as chosen a different path, her decisions from this moment forth may close or split timelines into alternate realities. It's endless, we could even experience variants if we're not careful."
" Huh?" Peter asked.
" He means we may get trapped here." Hank said with a deep sigh. " Our own reality may alter, we could lose our families and friends... mutants may not exist. There could even be a reality without shrimp, the variants could raise concerns with the Gods and other higher beings from different worlds. Me and Stephen have spoken about this in great detail, we had several backup plans for many scenarios if it came to this situation with Wanda."
" Not cool, I like shrimp." Peter said.
" What are these variants you speak of?" Erik asked.
" Alternative others." Stephen replied, his gaze lingered on Peter. " Other versions of yourself, I believe Wanda may have already met one in the place of her deceased Brother."
" Me?" Peter asked, he pointed to himself and laughed. " Another version? Please, I'm still breathing. I'm the original from my reality, just ask my Mom."
" You wouldn't be the only one." Stephen said with an amused smile. " I believe we all have variants in the different timelines, they can take any form. Man, woman, child or even animal. The options are endless. Although I'm quite intrigued to meet the female version of me again, she was magnificent. Very talented with a paint brush, I need to arrange another meeting with her."
" Animal variants? That's fascinating!" Hank said.
" That would explain Logan..." Peter said.
" So, are you ready to leave?" Stephen asked.
" We can't leave, I mean Wanda still needs us." Peter said.
" We don't have any other choice, it's dangerous for us to be here right now." Erik said, his gaze lingered on his Son. " Wanda is powerful, she'll be fine."
" But what about the twins, Darcy and Monica?" Peter asked.
" They're fighters, they'll survive." Erik replied.
Peter stared at his Father before he turned his gaze towards the street behind him, he didn't want to leave Wanda and the boys when they were still in danger. He had only spent two days with them sInce he arrived in Westview, he'd had a lot of fun with twins on Halloween. He had become quite fond of his fake family and new friends, he even had concerns about Vision since his whereabouts were still unknown to them.
Hank and Erik had spoken about the unfolding situation, it seemed like they had already made a decision for themselves. They wanted to get back to the school, the students could be in danger if the timeline altered like Stephen had told them. Their friends and family would need them, they couldn't chance staying in Westview while their own reality could be in danger.
" Peter, we're ready go." Erik said.
" I'm not coming with you, I'm staying here." Peter said.
" What?!" Hank asked with concern in his voice. " You can't stay here, didn't you hear anything Stephen just told us?"
" I heard everything, but this..." Peter sighed to himself while he looked at his companions over his shoulder. " It doesn't feel right, I can't just turn my back on my friends. It's not the X Men way, the Professor wouldn't turn his back on any of us if we needed help."
" None of this is right, we shouldn't have come here." Erik said before he approached his Son. " Your Mother wouldn't approve with what I'm about to say to you, but if you want to stay I won't stop you."
" Are you being serious?" Peter asked.
" Deadly serious." Erik replied, he rested his hand on his Son's shoulder. " You're a grown man, this is your decision. If you want to help Wanda and the boys then so be it, I won't stand in your way. I wouldn't be able to stop you anyway, you're too fast."
" Thanks, Dad." Peter said.
" A noble and brave decision." Stephen said while he approached them. " You should be proud of your Son, but we should get moving if you still plan to return to your own reality without any hitches."
" You guys should get going, I'll be fine." Peter said.
Peter turned around to face his Father, he told him that he appreciated his understanding with the decision he had made about staying in Westview. Erik smiled at Peter, his grip tightened on his Son's shoulder before he pulled him into a tight embrace. Peter had hugged his Father a couple of times since the truth about his parentage had been revealed to him, but this hug felt different. He felt comfort and emotions, he'd longed to feel loved by his Father. He wrapped his arms around Erik and returned his embrace, he had finally found the Fatherly love he had been searching for since he was a kid.
" Be careful." Erik said before he pulled himself away from Peter. " I don't want to lose you after I just found you, I'm only just getting to know that kid I first met decades ago at the Pentagon."
" I won't do anything reckless, I promise." Peter said.
" Come home safely, my Son." Erik said.
Erik patted Peter's shoulder before he stepped away from him, he even wiped a couple of tears away from his cheek. Peter knew his Father feared losing another child after Nina, he didn't want him to ever go through anything like that again. Peter even thought about his Mom, she would kill him if she knew what he was planning to do. But his Mom understood that he loved saving and helping people, she had told him on many occasions that she was proud of him.
" Are you sure about this, Peter?" Stephen asked, he looked back at him. " There's no turning back, once your decision is made I may not be able to open this portal again to this location."
" I'm sure, I need to do this." Peter replied.
" Take care, Peter." Hank said while he held his hand out towards him. " I'll get word to your Mother and Sister, I'll make sure they're cared for until you return safely back home."
" I'll be careful, don't you worry about me." Peter said before he shook his friend's hand. " Tell my Mom that I'm just on a mission, she knows how busy it gets on missions. She worries about me..."
" I'll reassure her that you're safe." Hank said.
" Thanks, Hank." Peter said.
Peter smiled at his teammate before he let go of his hand, he knew his Mom and Sister would be safe while he was gone. Stephen asked him once again if he wanted to come with them, but Peter had made his mind up. He wanted to help his friends in this reality, he didn't want to chance every other reality being messed up because of Wanda making any bad decisions with the Darkhold.
" Good luck, my friend." Stephen said.
" Thanks, I'm gonna need it." Peter said before he pulled his goggles over his eyes. " Have a safe trip."
Stephen turned his back on Peter while he opened another portal with his powers, the street view before them soon tore apart. A whirling orange glow and a familiar scene appeared before their eyes, they could see one of the many corridors at Xaviers School For Gifted Youngesters. The wooden floors and walls, the paintings hanging on the corridor's wall. It had been home for many mutants over the decade, the safest place for mutant kind in their reality.
" Home sweet, home." Hank said.
There was a few students gathering at the other end of the corridor, they looked fearful due to the portal in the corridor. Storm, Scott and Kurt soon appeared in the corridor with Charles, they looked relieved when they saw their fellow teammates through the portal. It wasn't long until they heard the Professor's voice, he wheeled himself towards the portal and stopped not far away from it.
" Hank, Erik, Peter?!" Charles asked, his voice was filled with curiosity. " Can you hear me?!"
" We can see and hear you, Charles." Erik replied.
" Thank goodness!" Charles said, he seemed relieved. " We've been concerned about your whereabouts since I lost my telepathic connection with you three. Are you all well?"
" We're fine, you don't have to worry about us." Peter replied.
" Professor Charles Xavier, it's a pleasure to finally meet you." Stephen said while he approached the portal. " We've not met in person, but we've connected on a higher level not long ago."
" Doctor Stephen Strange, I presume?" Charles asked.
" I would love to stand around and chat with you, but at this very moment in time we're not in a safe place." Stephen replied, he looked back at his companions. " We need to leave, the Scarlet Witch approaches..."
" Who is the Scarlet Witch?" Kurt asked.
" More to the point, who is Doctor Stephen Strange?" Storm asked.
" I'm gonna ask if we can trust him..." Scott said.
" Oh will you look at the time!" Stephen said with a hint of humour in his voice. " We should get moving, hurry along now... time waits for no man!"
Erik looked back at Peter before he walked through the portal, he was soon followed by Stephen and Hank. Peter looked at his teammates through the whirling hole in Mapple Street, this maybe the last time he would ever get to see them. The students and his friends, his Father. Charles seemed puzzled that Peter hadn't followed his teammates through the portal, there was a deafening silence between them all. He could now hear the Professor's voice inside of his head, the concern in his voice was overpowering.
Peter, whatever you're planning to do... please think it through!
" They need my help, the twins... Wanda." Peter said.
Don't be reckless, come home!
" I'm not being reckless..." Peter said, he made eye contact with Father. " I've never been so sure of something in all of my life, I need to do this!"
Peter!
Peter gave Stephen a nod of his head, the Sorcerer raised his hand towards the portal. The portal reacted to his reaching hand and began to close, his teammates looked panicked at his decision to stay in Westview. The Professor's voice echoed inside of his head while he tried to wheel himself towards the closing portal, he had to be restrained by Scott. Peter kept his gaze fixed on Erik until he disappeared from his sight, he was now alone in Westview.
