Made this when I got inspired by my own birthday this week; so, here's a gift to myself as well as to all my readers, enjoy!

Birthdays Are Meant to Celebrate You

Thunk! Thunk! Thunk!

The sound of gentle knocking on wood roused Lincoln Loud from his dreams. With a yawn, he turned away from the wall, facing the door just as it opened.

"Hey there, baby bro!" From out of the hallway came his third eldest sister, Luna Loud. In her hand, a tiny cupcake with bright blue frosting and little orange sprinkles stood upon her palm. "Time to rise and shine, birthday boy!"

Lincoln rose up from his pillow, smiling sleepily as the truth of her statement washed over him. "G'morning, Luna," He said, rubbing his eye with his fist. When his vision was cleared, he saw the cupcake and brightened a little. "Is that for me?" He asked.

Luna beamed and went over to sit by him, "Yup! Gotta start the day off right, don't we? My favorite little dude only turns 12 once after all."

Lincoln laughed and reached out to take the cupcake when Luna held it out for him. "Aww, thanks, Luna," He said, looking down at the cupcake warmly.

"You excited about today?" Luna asked with a smirk. "You got all your favorite people coming for what looks to be a pretty sweet party, pops is making a cake special for you, and you didn't hear this from me, but I think there might be a decent pile of presents waiting in the downstairs closet for you."

Lincoln lit up significantly at that last bit. Maybe he would get that Ace Savvy game he asked for! "Heck yeah I'm excited!" He gushed, leaning forward with a giant smile.

Luna smirked and pointed towards the cupcake, "No use in delaying the start of it then, right? Go ahead and take a bite, little bro!"

Lincoln laughed again and lifted the cupcake towards his mouth, "Alright, alright…"
"Boop." Suddenly, just before he could take a bite, Luna swiped out her hand and tilted the cupcake up, squishing the frosting onto his nose. "Gotcha!" She laughed impishly.

Lincoln rolled his eyes bemusedly, "Oh right, the tradition. Very funny, Luna."

Luna laid a hand over her stomach, currently clenching with the laughter that was moving through her. "Sorry bro!" She wheezed, grabbing a handkerchief she had hidden in her pocket, "But I couldn't resist!" She reached out and delicately wiped the frosting away from his nose before pulling it back. "But I gotta keep the tradition alive, y'know!"

"Yeah, I know…" Lincoln agreed with a shake of his head and a smile. His eyes crossed when he noticed a residual smidge of frosting, and he stuck his tongue upward to try to get at it.

Luna chuckled at the admittedly adorable sight as she scooched further onto the bed to lean against the back wall. "I'm glad you're such a good sport with me doin' my little reenactment of that day every year," She said, bringing her arms to rest behind her head. "Heck, I'm glad you remember it in such good spirits at all, really."

Lincoln gave up trying to reach his nose and simply just took a bite of the cupcake instead. "Did I not before?" He asked, licking the frosting off his lips.

Luna lightly scoffed, "Oh yeah, it was a total clustercuss the day it actually happened. There's a reason we call it 'The Linky fifth birthday fiasco'. You were darn near inconsolable for a while. You even said you didn't wanna have your birthday anymore at one point."

"Did I really?" Lincoln asked in a hush. "What happened to make me change my mind? I still remember that party as being pretty nice in the end."

A proud smirk came over Luna and she brought a thumb to her chest, "You can thank me for that, little bro. Because of me, your most awesome big sis, what started out as a total bummer, became one of the family's most precious memories!"

"Really?" Lincoln's eyes widened and he crawled out of his blankets to move closer to Luna. "Tell me about it! I wanna know now!"

Luna's smile broadened, "Well, I don't know, I got a pretty busy day ahead of me. Guitars to tune, tunes to guitar, stuff like that…"

"Please, Luna!?" Lincoln urged, making his eyes extra big and glimmery for her.

Had Luna not been teasing, she probably would've caved to that look. "Oh, okay!" She pretended to relent, snaking an arm behind him to pull him against her side. "But only 'cause it's your special day, alright? Quit with the puppy dog eyes. I won't be able to concentrate with you making my heart melt." To accentuate her words, she gave him a little boop on the nose with her finger, clearing the last bit of frosting away.

Lincoln snickered and nestled into Luna's side in response. "Okay," He agreed, laying his head against her shoulder and taking another chomp at his cupcake.

Luna smiled and tilted her cheek along the top of his head.

"Alright, where to start…" She mulled. "If I remember right, we were having a magician themed birthday for you that day, and the whole debacle started when you got spooked by a rabbit the magic dude had you pull from a hat…"

Luna spoke the truth. The day of Lincoln's fifth birthday had been, at first, sort of a flop. Yes, it had started out merrily enough, with a colorful pile of presents, a delicious looking blue cake, and banners bearing the words, "Happy birthday Link!" hung along the eaves of the shed, showcasing the family's joy and happiness for the day that the lone son of the Loud house had arrived into the world.

Alongside that, various accoutrements matching the magic show theme were also strewn about. Table cloths emblazoned with playing card symbols and magic wands, paper plates with sparkly edges, and even rabbit shaped balloon animals (courtesy of Luan) decorated the backyard, transforming it into a quaint little facsimile of a magic show. There was even a little magic stage in the farthest back point of the backyard, complete with a pair of sparkly red curtains.

And Lincoln, along with his friends and family did enjoy it. Lincoln was even garbed in an adorable rendition of a magician's costume, with black slacks, a black vest, a little white undershirt, a little red bowtie, a cape that was black on the back and red in the front, and lastly, a tiny top-hat with a little red band.

It all started out so happily, especially when the magician had shown up. Lincoln and his guests had all been completely enraptured by the show, gasping when they procured flowers out of a flame, made a gallon of milk disappear inside of a folded up newspaper, and when they made a card magically appear in Lynn Sr.'s mouth (He hadn't much appreciated that one).

Soon, the end of the show came near, and the magician began what was supposed to be a memorable coup de grace, special for the birthday boy.

A top-hat, similar to the one Lincoln wore, was extended out towards him, with the magician kindly inviting the boy to reach in to participate in his final trick.

Lincoln appeared curious, a bit cautious as well, but more curious. So, with a little gloved hand, he reached into the hat, sinking it into the darkness, and pulled.

From within, a fluffy little white rabbit appeared, hanging from Lincoln's grasp by its ears, squirming displeasingly and staring at Lincoln with beady little black eyes, just as shocked as the birthday boy was quickly becoming.

Was he hurting it? For all the little one knew, he very much was.

"Augh!" He gasped, fearfully dropping the rabbit onto the grass and stepping back.

And off the rabbit went, sprinting through the grass, beelining away from the guests and towards the other edge of the backyard.

And unfortunately garnering the attention of the Loud family dog, Charles.

Charles' ears perked up when the rabbit hopped past him, and at the behest of his instincts, he immediately bolted after it, barking like a little canine madman.

Everyone watched Charles chase after the rabbit, driving it under the foldout table where the cake sat alongside the paper plates.

That's when it happened.

In his frenetic need to catch the rabbit, Charles disappeared beneath the table, knocking one of the legs out and causing the table to fall over. From the top of the table, the cake flew out, sailing through the air in a strangely perfect arc.

Had any of the family members predicted where it was gonna land, they would've yanked the birthday boy out of the way.

SPLAT!

The cake, bright blue frosting and all, slammed into Lincoln, sending him flat onto his rear with the surprising force of it.

Gasps rang out from everyone at the party, followed quickly by silence.

A moment of harrowing tension followed where no one said a word. They all just watched Lincoln for a moment, partly out of being too shocked to react right away, partly to see how Lincoln would react himself.

Lincoln brought his hands to scoop some of the cake away, allowing his eyes to see out from the pastry that had imprisoned them. He blinked, blearily staring past the blue frosting clinging to his eyebrows at his now blue gloves.

Then, in a moment that would break the heart of even the most coldhearted person, Lincoln's eyes began to quiver, and from their baby blue brilliance, a deluge of tears began to fall, mixing with the frosting. Not a second after, his anguished little cry rang through the yard, prompting his family to run to his side.

They all did what they could to comfort him, with each family member telling him that everything was okay and that they would make the situation better. Try as they might though, poor Lincoln just couldn't bring the tears to stop; so, in an effort to give him a moment to calm down and clean him up, he was brought back into the house by his mother and father.

That's how the then nine-year-old Luna had ended up where she was at the moment the story begins proper, hanging at the threshold between the backyard and the kitchen, cautiously poking her head past the partially open door to glean what was going on, keeping an eye on her brother while her other sisters tended to other matters of damage control.

"Oh, there, there, sweetheart," Rita shushed. She brought the damp towel along Lincoln's cheeks, wiping away the last bit of frosting that was easily removeable. Lincoln's white locks would still hold a blue tinge until his next bath, and the whites of his undershirt were definitely stained forevermore, but his face was thankfully pretty clear now. "It'll be alright," She cooed.

Lincoln hiccupped and shook his head, "N-No it won't. I-I ruined the party. Now everyone's gonna be m-mad at me!"

"What? No one's gonna be mad at you, sweetie," Rita replied. "This was just a little accident. It's gonna be alright."

"I ruined the cake…" Lincoln argued pitifully.

"Daddy and Leni are going to the store right now to get you another one," Rita reasoned calmly.

"I hurt that poor little bunny…" Lincoln sniffed. "I grabbed it's ears."

"I'm sure the bunny knows it was just an accident and doesn't hold any hard feelings towards you," Rita whispered, leaning down to take Lincoln's cheeks in her palms.

Lincoln took a deep breath and coughed a watery cough, "My friends will think I'm dumb now…"

"Your friends are only wondering if you're okay and are waiting for you to come back out," Rita shushed, lifting her thumbs to wipe the tears that were cropping up in his eyes once more. "Don't you want to go out and keep playing with them?"

Luna felt her throat tighten when she heard Lincoln hiccup and begin to cry again.

"N-No," He wept, hiding his face in his mother's chest, "I don't think I wanna have my birthday anymore…"

Rita frowned, and she took Lincoln off the kitchen counter to take him into her arms. "Oh, sweetheart…" She cooed, rocking him back and forth.

And Luna, ever the most sensitive member of the Loud family back then, began to feel her eyes water alongside her brother. Birthdays weren't supposed to make kids cry, they were supposed to be the happiest day of the year for them, even beyond Christmas.

Standing there, seeing her brother sob in her mother's embrace, made her want to make him feel better more than anything else in the world.

CREEA! And because of that desire distracting her, she was caught unawares of how much she was leaning against the door, causing it to tilt further in and eliciting a screeching creak out of it.

And as much as she wished otherwise, that noise was more than enough to pull both her mother and brother's attention towards her.

"Oh! Hello, Luna," Rita said, continuing to pat Lincoln on the back as she addressed her. "Do you need something?"

Luna gulped, unable to keep her sights off her little brother's big, glimmery eyes or his squiggly little frown. She just wanted to give him the biggest hug she could. "Um, the magician wants to see you," She informed, stepping forward. "He says Charles won't let him put his rabbit back in its cage."

Rita groaned, "Looks like someone doesn't know how to read the room…" She went over to the counter and set Lincoln back upon it, amassing another crack in her heart when she saw Lincoln reach his arms out to her, unwilling to relinquish her comfort just yet.

"Don't worry, sweetheart," Rita shushed sweetly. "I'll be back before you know it." She turned to Luna, "Luna will keep you company in the meantime, won't you, Luna?"

Luna jolted, but nodded with clasped hands, "Uh-huh! I'll be right here, mama! I promise!"

Rita smiled, "Atta girl." She then turned back to Lincoln again and leaned down to lay a kiss on top of his blue-tinged locks, "Take care, sweetheart. Everything's gonna be just fine, alright?"

Lincoln only sniffled in response, bringing his hands to cover his eyes as he folded his legs against his chest and curled up into a ball atop the counter.

Luna got the feeling he didn't believe her, and because she could clearly see just how much he was hurting, she stepped up to the counter shortly after her mother left.

"Linky…?" She pulled the stepping stool they all kept in the kitchen towards the counter, using it to climb onto the top alongside him. "Linky, is there anything I can do for you?"

Lincoln didn't respond. He just trembled when Luna scooched closer to him, seizing up when the tears began to fall once more.

Luna frowned dismally. "Oh, Linky…" She crooned, reaching out her arm to wrap around him, turning him towards her so she could hug him up front. "I'm so sorry this happened. If I could've, I would've jumped in front of that cake for you, no questions asked." She patted his back as he wept into her shoulder, mimicking what she had seen her mother do for him and jostled him back and forth. "I promise, once we get you back outside with your friends, you're gonna feel so much better."

"I-I don't wanna go back outside," Lincoln whimpered, shaking his head against the crook of her neck, tickling her chin with his frosting caked turkey tail. "I-I d-don't wanna have my b-birthday anymore!"

Luna's eyes watered, but she forced the tears down and tightened her embrace around her weeping baby brother. "Oh Linky, you don't mean that," She whispered, bringing one of her hands to ruffle his hair lovingly. "You were so excited about today, remember? Don't you still wanna have fun?"

Lincoln shook his head again, shaking a little more fitfully in what Luna really hoped was a comforting grasp.

Luna tilted her head to rest her cheek on the crown of his head, searching frantically within her mind for something else to say, anything else to say, really.

"But…But Linky…" She gulped and lightly clenched the fabric of his shirt. "There's—there's still so much for us to celebrate."

Lincoln sniffled and pulled away, peering up at her with tear-misted eyes, "Like what?"

Luna felt something stir in the deepest recesses of her being, and suddenly, something brought the right response to the forefront of her mind.

"You, of course," Luna said, leaning forward to touch her forehead to his. "Linky, birthdays aren't just about games and presents, they're about families celebrating the day someone they love came into their lives."

Lincoln blinked, clearing a small vestige of his tears away. "Whaddya mean?" He asked, tilting his head curiously.

Luna smiled, her mood lifting the smallest amount when she saw the progress she was making. "Linky, do you know how excited we were when Mama and Papa told us they were having you? We were totally over the moon!"

Lincoln's eyes widened, "Really?"

Luna nodded earnestly, "Absolutely!" She blushed, but went on with a bashful admittance of, "In fact, back when you were in Mama's tummy, I used to sing to you. I wanted to make sure you knew what my voice sounded like when you came along."

Lincoln's jaw dropped a little, and his tense limbs became a little more relaxed, "You did? You sang to me way back then?"

Luna's cheeks grew pinker, and she lifted a finger to scratch at one of them, "I—I wanted you to know who I was." She looked back at Lincoln, offering a sheepish smile, "I wanted you to know that there was someone who loved you waiting for you." She chuckled, "I had this crazy idea that you would be too shy to be born otherwise."

Lincoln couldn't help but giggle in response, a bit of a choked, watery giggle, but a giggle nonetheless. "T-That's funny," He hiccupped. He coughed, and he had to take a moment to catch his breath, Luna patting him on the back as he got through it. When he was better, he peered up at Luna again, taking a sniffly little breath. "Were any of the other girls excited?" He asked.

Luna nodded, "Uh-huh! Lynn was always staying close to mama, hugging her tummy and talking to you so she could be your friend, Luan rehearsed a buncha puppet shows to perform for you, Leni tried knitting you some baby booties, and Lori insisted that she was gonna be the one to take care of you the most." She beamed at her brother and pulled him into another hug, "And me? I wanted to make sure you had someone to sing to you, whenever you needed someone to."

Lincoln tensed a little in Luna's embrace. "Luna…" He sniffled again and wrapped his arms around her in return, taking refuge in her shoulder once more. "Thank you, Luna."

"And the day you actually showed up," Luna went on, "It was like we all had our best wishes come true." She giggled and hugged Lincoln tighter, "You were sooooo cute, Linky! You made us actually forget all about our toys; we knew we had a way better treasure in you."

She smirked when she recalled several events in which Lori and Leni painted his nails and Luan used him as a ventriloquist dummy, Though we did kinda treat you like a toy every now and again, She mentally admitted.

"Did you sing to me?" Lincoln asked in a cautious mumble.

Luna broke into an actual grin and pulled Lincoln from her so she could answer him face to face, "I sure did! And you know what, Linky? I think you recognized my voice, because you always got super calm whenever I did. Like you knew you were safe with me around!"

Lincoln smiled and looked down at his twiddling fingers, "That makes sense…" He glanced back up at her, his face tingeing pink, "I bet I already loved you back then, too."

Luna felt her heart go practically molten with affection, and she couldn't help but hug her brother again, squeezing him close so she could convey every iota of love she felt for him.

"Ya see, Linky?" She said, pulling him away from her so they could look at one another again, "We're not just celebrating the fact that you're a year older today, we're celebrating you! The best baby brother the world could've ever given us! That's why we want to see you go back out there and have fun! We wanna see you be as happy as we were the day you became a part of our family!"

She expected that final capstone, that last bit of her little soliloquy out of nowhere to be the finishing touch on wiping her little brother's sadness away. She expected him to all but lunge himself from the counter, running towards the back door and into the sunny day, once more filled with the joy that most should feel on the day of their birth.

What she got instead was another squiggly little frown.

"I'm sorry, Luna," He mumbled, biting his cheek somberly, "But…But I still feel bad, about everything." He tensed up and he brought his hand to his arm, his eyes going misty again before they clenched shut, "Do I have to?"

A part of Luna wanted to insist that he really should, that it was what was best for him. Fortunately, the more compassionate part of her chimed in soon after.

It is his birthday.

Luna couldn't force anything on him. If he was upset, those feelings deserved to be validated.

But she really wanted him to enjoy his birthday; and with that in mind, a final last ditch effort kind of plan formed in her mind.

"Tell ya what," She said, reaching out to cup his cheeks with her palms, "Why don't you take just a few more minutes to think about it? If you still feel that way, I'll side with you and tell Mama and Papa you wanna just take the rest of the day for yourself. Does that sound alright to you?"

Lincoln appeared to size up the offer for a moment, biting his lip in silent thought; a gesture Luna secretly found adorable. After he took his required thinking time, he looked back at her.

"Okay," He nodded.

Luna smiled. Perfect, one part of her plan was set in motion. Now for the second. "And Linky," She said, turning on her side to let her legs hang over the counter edge again, "can I sing Happy Birthday to you? If you decide to call off the party, I wanna make sure I still get to celebrate the day I got my baby brother."

Lincoln blinked owlishly at the request, but seeing the genuine love and tenderness in his big sister's big brown eyes made the answer obvious.

"O-Okay," He said, turning so he was sitting like her.

That position was short lived, as in a blur of motion, he was abruptly, but very tenderly brought into Luna's lap.

"Ah!" He squeaked.

"Sorry," Luna giggled, closing her arms around him and pulling her legs up so they were folded in a pretzel, effectively cloaking the little one in her arms in loving warmth, "I just wanted to hug you while I do it. Comfy?"

Lincoln was comfy, as well as a smidge less sad now that he was back in the loving hold of someone he trusted. So, with an ember of warmth flickering to life in his heart, he nodded and set his cheek against his big sister's chest as she rested her chin on top of his head. "Mmhmm," He mumbled in reply.

"Good. Here I go then." Luna took a deep breath, and right when the very first lyric flowed from her lips, she began to rock her beloved baby brother in her arms.

Happy Birthday to you,

Happy Birthday to you,

Happy Birthday, dear Linky

Happy Birthday to you

The song was short, as it always is, but in those four little lines, Lincoln felt every last single ounce of love that Luna held in her heart for him, and in the warmth of her embrace, the shame, the embarrassment, and even the guilt in pulling the little rabbit's ears, all melted away.

"Happy birthday, Lincoln," Luna whispered, leaning down to give him a kiss on his forehead, "I love you. Twenty times to the moon and back."

Lincoln wished he could resist it, but the second Luna's kiss brushed against him, he began to cry again, this time in the joyful truth of it; the undeniable love that was filling his previously shame-cracked heart.

"I love you too, Luna," He murmured, curling up into another ball in her arms, gripping her shirt and nestling further into her. "T-Thank you."

Luna smiled and continued rocking him, "Anytime, Linky."

The two of them stayed there for a while after that, Luna holding her brother close as happiness and a healthy dose of affection washed away the final bits of sadness that had dared intrude upon his birthday.

"Awww!" It wasn't until the adoring exclamation of their mother coming back into the kitchen that their attention was pulled away from one another. "Is your big sister making you feel better, sweetheart?" She asked, stepping up to them with her hands on her hips.

Lincoln turned towards his mother. "Mmhmm!" He happily hummed.

"Are you feeling up to going back out to the party then?" Rita asked next.

Luna looked down at Lincoln just as he tilted his gaze up to her.

"I-I think so," He said with a tentative little nod. "As long as Luna comes with me."

Luna scoffed good naturedly. "You kiddin'?" She unwound herself and hopped off the counter, still holding her brother until they were on the ground. "I already told you, didn't I? I wanna celebrate the day you came into my life!"

Lincoln smiled and grabbed her hand when she set him down, "Then I do wanna go. Because you made me happy today."

Luna smiled and reached out to boop her brother on the nose, "I'm glad then. Because if you're happy, then I'm happy."

And Lincoln went back out once more, his big sister in tow for what turned out to be a happy day in the end.

"And just like that, a total bummer of a day became a rockin' one."

Luna beamed at Lincoln, squeezing him against her side as she concluded her story, "All because you had an awesome big sis to tell you just how much you mattered to her."

Lincoln regarded Luna, his face alight with something best described as a mix of shocked appreciation and enamored admiration, both for the story, and for the girl who had told him it. "Luna…" He lifted up a balled-up hand to rub at a suddenly moist eye. "I…I don't know how I forgot about that part of the story. I somehow forgot how much you helped me that day."

Luna smiled and reached out to wipe an errant droplet from Lincoln's other eye, "Don't feel bad, bro. You were just a little dude back then. Everyone's got a fuzzy memory or two." She tilted her head to give him a little nuzzle, "The important thing is that we got this little tradition of ours to always remember that day, right?"

Lincoln smiled warmly at Luna in response. "Right," He agreed with a cheerful nod.

Luna smirked and parted from her brother. "Now hurry up and finish that cupcake!" She directed, pointing at the final crumbs of blue and white pastry that sat in Lincoln's lap. "We got a birthday to celebrate!"

Lincoln laughed and plucked the final bit, popping it into his mouth and depositing the wrapper in the trashcan. "Yeah!" He said, standing up from the bed, arms pumped in a quick flex, "I'm gonna make the most of today! Just like you want me to!"

Luna grinned and leaned forward, "Sounds like a plan, but before you go, we got one more part of this tradition to finish up on."

Lincoln's arms dropped and he turned to Luna, eyebrows raised, "What's that?"

Luna smirked impishly, and like a very affectionate viper, she struck out and swiped her brother off his feet, falling back on the bed with him placed lovingly on her lap.

"Gotta sing to my baby bro!" She replied, folding her arms and legs around him to cloak him in tender warmth, just as she had done seven birthdays prior. "That way I can keep the promise I made the day mom and dad told me I was getting him!"

Lincoln blushed, and perhaps because his heart was still softened quite a bit by the story Luna had told him, he didn't object, choosing instead to curl up in her hug and rest his head against her chest.

Luna felt a flush of warmth rush through her at her brother's go-ahead, and with a quick breath, she began to rock him in her arms, and sing.

Happy Birthday to you,

Happy Birthday to you,

Happy Birthday, baby brother

Happy Birthday to you

It was a moment of close parallelism for the two of them, mirrored perfectly in every way but the differential of time. There, with her brother in her arms, Luna remembered the immense happiness she felt the day he finally came into her life, as well as the unequivocal joy that having him in her life brought her every day.

"Happy birthday, bro," Luna whispered, leaning down to kiss him on the cheek. "What I said way back when still sticks. The only difference now is that I love you thirty times to the moon and back."

And Lincoln believed her. Because when Luna laid the kiss upon his cheek, he was suddenly transported to a time far before; a time he had just been told about, where the same pair of arms, and the same loving words were being whispered to him by the same person who held him now.

His big sister, who loved him with all her heart.

And in the face of that love, Lincoln couldn't stop the tears of happiness that came a moment later.

"Thank you, Luna," He sniffled, a wan smile coming over him as he hugged her back. "I love you, too; forty times to the moon and back."

And Luna laughed, hugging the birthday boy tighter and fulfilling the tradition that they would treasure for many years to come.

A.N: Awww! I gotta say, I really enjoyed writing this, and I really hope you all enjoyed reading this as well! One of my favorite parts about birthdays is legit the love one feels from those close to them, so I decided to draw upon that and make this for all you guys to warm your hearts as much as mine is on my birthday. While I intend to post this during the general week of my birthday (I never know how long editing may take) and can't be sure if I'll post it on my birthday proper, I'd still appreciate feedback and reviews as a sort of birthday gift! After all, they only help me get better and always make my day when I see them!

Manegie, out!

PS: Sorry about the little canon error in this. Apparently in the actual episode, the cake fiasco took place on Lincoln's 7th birthday. My bad XD Oh well, fanfiction, right?
