Izuku was very upset. He wasn't even a little excited.
There were three men with suits standing next to Hawks. All three of them seemed intent on taking Eri, who was quickly realizing that these people weren't as nice as they pretended to be a few seconds earlier.
However, once they got within a few feet of the little girl Izuku had hopped in between them and thumped his back feet on the ground loudly, causing the man reaching for her to take a step back.
Hawks gave a signature smile, hoping to calm down the situation. "Hey, there's no need to get all defensive. You're acting like we're going to hurt her, this is a great opportunity for her and isn't a bad thing at all. Besides, it's not my call or yours, she's legally already a ward of the Hero Commission, my job is just to bring her to her new home."
He reached out for her when Izuku finally spoke to the small group, with a deadly tone they had never heard from the usually cheerful rabbit.
"If you touch her, I will kill you."
Hawks froze for a moment. You see, he had been threatened more times than he could count and by now could usually tell when someone was bluffing or not. In his experience, even when someone wasn't bluffing they usually couldn't follow through on their threats against him, there was a reason he was now the number one hero after all.
But this was different. This didn't feel like a threat. This felt like a simple giving of information from a creature that was famous for being incapable of deception. He could almost compare it to how it felt to be taught something fundamental about the world. Fire is hot, the Earth is round, objects in motion stay in motion, and if he laid a finger on this girl he would die.
Watching Hawks warily stare at the small creature was the ultimate upset of the food chain. The hawk was not supposed to be attacked by the rabbit and the hero was not supposed to be afraid of tiny first year students.
At the end of the day though, no matter how much he was sure it would end badly, he had been trained to fear the hero commission far more than any villain (or hero in this case).
One of the men in the fancy suits started to grab Eri by the arm. "Enough of this. We have every legal right to take in this child and you cannot stand in our way without breaking the-"
The moment his hand brushed her arm he was sent flying backwards by a well placed kick. The man slammed into a tree hard enough that everyone heard the sickening crunch of bones breaking on impact. It happened fast enough that only Hawks truly saw the move, the agents not even registering the green blur that launched their coworker.
The hero didn't know exactly how injured the man was from that kick but he doubted that he was doing well. However, he wouldn't be able to check until later because not even he was foolish enough to turn his eyes away from an angry animal, especially one that was protecting a child and likely felt cornered.
"I told you not to touch her."
Hawks took a deep breath as he regained his composure. "Izuku Midoriya, you're under arrest for assault against a government official. I know you're upset, I hate this as much as you do, but this isn't a battle you can win. We have to follow our orders and what the Commision tells us to do even if we don't like it. And now you'll be going to jail for breaking the law and she'll still be admitted to the program."
"What's the point of laws if they don't protect kits that are in danger?"
Hawks pulled two of his feathers out and brandished them like shortswords as his gaze became more cold and calculated. "I really don't want to fight you. But heroes have to follow orders. This is your last chance to come peacef-"
His words were cut off as a rabbit came flying at him with the force of an oncoming truck.
By the time that Aizawa had made his way over to them the entire area was a mess. Trees had been knocked over, three government agents seemed to be at very levels of unconscious and injured, feathers were stabbed into just about everything, and his little girl was hiding behind a flipped over table.
Neither of the heroes were looking particularly good either. Izuku had multiple cuts from glancing feather strikes while Hawks had a badly broken arm, and likely broken ribs from how he was breathing, not to mention the numerous bruises both had.
Much of him wanted to get involved, but his priority was protecting Eri and getting her out of there. He also knew that Izuku would never forgive him if he put the rabbit's safety before a 'kit's' safety, even if he thought of both of them (and all of his other students) as his kids.
As he grabbed the little girl in his arms he saw one of the downed agents weakly raise a gun at the rabbit who had his back turned.
Before he could cry out a warning the trigger was pulled. But instead of a bang, there was only a soft woosh of air as a small dart shot through the air and into the back of the green rabbit. Within a few seconds Izuku started to slow down, making him much easier prey.
Hawks landed next to the rabbit and picked him up with his good arm. "Izuku Midoriya, you are hereby under arrest- Fuck!"
For the third time, Izuku cut them off by attacking. With a final burst of defiance he swiped a paw, leaving three deep gashes down the hero's face, all the way from his temple to his chin. After that he went limp, the powerful tranquilizer taking effect.
Holding the very heavy rabbit against his body, Hawks flew away bloody and broken, but victorious in the end.
Izuku woke up in a cage, and he didn't like that one bit. He also had a new collar on that kept him chained to the metal floor. The cage wasn't much bigger than he was, so he couldn't build any momentum and a solid kick to the bars showed that it was unpleasantly sturdy. He kicked it a few more times to be sure, but it didn't help at all.
"There's no use in trying to break through that cage, it's made of a quirk enhanced titanium alloy, but that doesn't mean I won't enjoy watching you try."
Izuku thumped loudly in anger, finding he couldn't speak human since he didn't have a phone or his talking collar. He saw a woman in a very fancy outfit and short blonde hair, after a second he recognized her as the president of the Hero Commision, which wasn't a good sign.
"Normally, this sort of thing is left to those of much lower stations and I rarely even hear about it, but you have been a particularly bothersome thorn in my side ever since you enrolled in that hero school. However, all things must come to an end."
"I'll give you one thing though, you really did surpass everyone's expectations. When we got notified that a rabbit of all things got enrolled in our most prestigious school, and in first place no less, we all assumed it was some silly pet project that the damn rat had picked up. But then within just a few weeks you manage to become an icon by taking out Stain and then revealing Endeavor just after that."
"And if that wasn't enough. Not only did you destroy the career of the most efficient hero loyal to the commission, you've now permanently scarred our most popular one. With that combined with his little speech about not wanting to follow his orders, there's no way we can keep him in the number one spot. So with Best Jeanest dead, we're stuck between Mirko, Edgeshot, and Crust."
She gestured angrily as she continued to angrily monologue at the source of her anger. "The rankings are a mess, Nezu is trying to undermine our authority, crime is on the rise, public opinion is dropping by the day, and it's all because of one stupid rabbit who should have known his fucking place!"
She took a deep breath. "I'm usually far more composed than this. I didn't get as far as I did by being emotional, but you really have made a mess of things. But what made you so much more problematic than anyone else was that you made a mess of things in a way that made the public love you. So we couldn't just make you disappear one day, and Nezu would have noticed a planned 'accident' a mile away. We needed to do something perfectly legal that would make you mad enough to attack a hero unprovoked. While collecting Eri would have been nice, we really only cared about setting up a situation where we could arrest you, thus solving our little rabbit problem."
"Which has brought you here. Welcome to one of our fantastic labs where we study the nature of quirks. The main study you'll be helping out with is the age question. How come quirked animals tend to live so much longer than their quirkless counterparts? So you get to spend the rest of your life being experimented on while we see just how long it takes you to finally die."
As she started to walk away she looked over her shoulder. "You know, I really enjoyed our talk even if you couldn't say much, it was nice to get this all off my chest. Maybe I'll come visit again in a decade or so, see if you're still alive by then."
Aizawa was shattered, this was the second time his student had been kidnapped, once by villains and now by the government. The press and other heroes were already swarming the area after seeing what had happened, but he didn't care, he had a job to do.
He marched his way up to Nezu's office, only realizing once he arrived that he was still holding the crying little girl in his arms. He considered finding someone to keep an eye on her, but couldn't bring himself to put her down while she clung to his scarf like a safety blanket.
"Nezu, where is he and what's the plan to get him back."
The rodent tried to keep his polite smile up regardless of the situation. "If I were to know where he was, which I'm not saying I do, what would you do about it? Nothing they've done is unlawful. Immoral and corrupt, yes, but illegal? No. In order for Izuku to be brought back and for you to be reinstated as Eri's guardian, it would take no less than a revolution. Or at the very least a removal of the Hero Commision as it currently stands."
"Fine. They tried to take my little girl and did take my student. I'll tear it down myself if I have to."
Nezu clapped as he jumped down from his chair. "Wonderful, I was hoping you'd say that. I've been waiting a long time to take these people down, and we finally have what I've been waiting for."
"What's that?"
"Izuku himself, of course. We were waiting on a hero so kind, so just, and so honest, that they couldn't help but gain allies everywhere they go while being the exact sort of thing that the government can't allow to exist."
"What's the plan then?"
"We do what I've been planning and preparing to do ever since I escaped from the Hero Commision lab I was created in. We go to war and tear their entire system to the ground, my dear friend."
Holy shit everyone, things are ramping up and we're hitting the climax of this story. Also, once the main plot line is over I plan on doing a handful of oneshots that didn't really fit into the story. So, if there's anything you want to see, now's the time to ask for it.
a few things to look forward to in that will be, a Watastumi centered chapter, a sentient cow that decided to enforce veganism, and plenty of rabbit based shenanigans as always.
