Chapter 9
It was nearing the end of October, September had flown by and October was doing the same for the young saiyan. After getting his feet wet in the wizarding world, Gohan had gotten into an easy routine of classes and homework, getting a bit better at controlling the power of his magic, not that things didn't still explode from time to time. After realizing storing up all his energy without an outlet would sooner flunk him out of Hogwarts than help him fit in, he added a bit of training and meditation into his routine. Not even his mom was angry when he told her about his forest excursions to train because it helped him get better at magic and thus get better grades.
Gohan was sitting at breakfast with Albus and Scorpius, that morning they were sitting at the Ravenclaw table. The breakfast trio had decided to change up where they sat every morning, not caring about the looks they sometimes received from other students. All Gohan really cared about was that there was food and plenty of it at whatever table that sat at.
Gohan got along well enough with his roommates, but he had soon learned that Albus was left out of most of his Slytherin roommates activites. Scorpius was genial enough with his fellow Ravenclaws, but to both Albus and Gohan's immense surprise, he admitted that the boys in Ravenclaw were kinda boring, always serious and studying, and they never laughed at his jokes. Gohan and Albus were clearly surprised that someone could outstudy their bookish friend, let alone a whole dormroom full.
Not long after the boys had started filling up their plate, or plates in Gohan's case, Hermes swooped down with the rest of the owls to deliver a letter into Gohan's wild hair, something his owl had recently started doing to the young boys chagrin. Pulling the envelope out of his hair and giving his owl the last bite of his toast. Gohan dug into his letter, already knowing who it was from, the young scholar was actually pretty curious about what his mom thought of the essay he had written for the literature assignment he last sent home. A quick scan of the letter was not what the boy expected.
"No way!" Gohan exclaimed, his face lighting up with excitement, as he reread the letter to confirm. Albus and Scorpius looked up from their porridge to see what their sometimes odd friend was on about now, usually this kind of exclamation only occured when the bacon and sausage plate didn't refresh itself after the last piece was taken. Seeing their friend with the letter piqued their interest.
"What's going on Gohan?" Scorpius asked ever inquisitive.
"Yeah, I thought for sure your owl stole your last blueberry scone or something." Albus joked, Gohan's fierce love of food was a topic that was often made fun of amongst the trio.
"Look right there!" Gohan shoved the letter into his friends face, Scorpius pulled the paper to his hands and the boys read together.
Dearest Gohan,
Thank you for your last letter. I haven't had time to look over your essay yet, but thank you for keeping up on your studies, I'm so proud of you. Why I haven't had time is because I have some very exciting news for you! You're going to be a big brother! I had a feeling before you left for school but I wanted to wait and make sure before we all got our hopes up. Bulma says the baby should be due in December. Grandpa and I miss you so much son, but we're so glad you're doing well in school.
Love,
Mom
P.S. Don't worry, I'm taking good care of myself. Your Grandpa hasn't even left the house since I told him the news, just like before you were born. Focus on your studies for me darling.
The two boys looked up after finishing the letter to the grinning face of Gohan.
"Isn't that awesome! I'm gonna be a big brother!" Gohan exclaimed.
"Congrats Gohan, you're going to be a great big brother." Scorpius patted his friend on the back.
"Yeah definitely better than my dumb brother that's for sure!" Albus said also giving Gohan a pat on the back.
"Don't you have a little sister too Al?" Gohan interceded.
"Oh, we don't talk about her." Albus laughed along with the other two boys, both of them knew how much he adored his goofy little sister.
"Guess I'm the last one in the only child club, do I win the grand prize?" Scorpius joked.
"Hey don't hold your breath Scorp, you could be next." Said Albus.
"Oh no, not me. Malfoy's only have one son, they only need one son." Scorpius said with his aristocratic voice he often used to imitate his father's side of the family.
The boys continued to joke throughout breakfast, Gohan wasn't really paying them much attention. He reread the letter again, too excited about the idea of a new little baby adding to their small family.
Everything was just peachy for Gohan, news of his new brother or sister had the Son boy smiling all the way to Charms that morning. Taking his usual spot with Seb and D, Gohan glanced around the room, where a bunch of kids were gathered around one of the tables. The boy in the center was Eddie which didn't surpise Gohan, he always was the center of attention. What did surprise the ebony haired boy was what he was able to hear. The group was talking in whispers but that didn't stop the young saiyans enhanced hearing from picking up on conversations anyway. Usually he tuned others' conversations out because he knew it was rude to evesdrop, but what he heard had him listening in.
"They were all laughing and celebrating this morning at breakfast." Whispered a girls voice.
"Yeah on the same day the Prophet reported on the bridge accident where seven muggle-born witches were injured." Another boy added.
"I heard a rumour he's from East District." The same girl stated.
"What? I've only heard criminals are from East District, how did he get into Hogwarts?" A different boy squeaked.
"Well, why do you think he's always hanging around with Dark Potter, and the Death Eater's kid." A different girl said.
"And don't forget him blowing everything up in class, he's obviously out of control." The other girl added.
"Yeah, he's never in bed in the mornings, always sneaking around." Gohan heard Eddie's voice inject. "He's a bad egg for sure, I've heard his Dad's not even around anymore, probably in prison, he only talks to his mother."
"Shhh he's looking over here." Whispered the last girl.
Even though the first thing he heard made Gohan know that they were talking about him, the last bit really sealed the deal. Gohan's happy mood (which was horribly misconstrued) was quickly going away. Gohan knew that he wasn't the most popular boy amongst the houses, but he didn't really mind because everyone seemed nice enough to him and he had a few good friends he could hang out with. Coming to school without ever having any friends his age, having just a few companions was more than enough for him. He really didn't know that there were kids that distrusted him so much. He knew Eddie wasn't his biggest fan after the first few weeks when he decided to hang out with Scorpius and Al instead of his fellow Gryffindor, but for him make up those things, especially about his family. Gohan felt his temper start to grow, his hands were fisted on top of the table next to the charms textbook which he stared down at on the table, to say those things about his parents, they had no right. When a crack formed under his right fist, it brought Gohan back to reality. Seb was looking at Gohan in confusion, never seeing the other boy in this sort of mood before.
"Gohan you alright man? You look pissed." Shaking his head Gohan looked up to Seb and D's concerned expressions which actually made him feel better. Not everyone thought he was some psycopath and hated him. Letting out a deep breath of air trying to get a grip on his temper, Gohan nodded to the two other boys. Glancing across the room towards the group which had started to disperse when Professor Flitwick entered the room, his gaze fell upon Eddie who was staring back at the half-saiyan boy with a hard expression before turning to his tablemate to laugh at a joke he had just made.
"Yeah, I'm fine Seb. Did you finish the homework for today?"
Gohan made it through class trying to not let his thoughts drift towards the rumors that were circulating about him. His lack of concentration didn't help his performance but that was better than turning Super Saiyan in class because he let his temper get out of control. After class had ended, Gohan quickly packed up his things and rushed out of the classroom before anyone could talk to him. Unfortunately he wasn't quite fast enough.
"Hey Son!" Gohan turned around to the unfamiliar voice talking to him in the hallway leading up to the third floor classrooms. "Yeah you." Gohan stopped walking wondering what this person wanted. Getting closer Gohan vaguely recognized him as a Hufflepuff boy from his Charms class.
"I heard you and your little friends thought that muggle-borns being injured today was pretty funny." Gohan just looked at the other boy in dismay.
"I am muggle-born, why would that be funny?" Gohan asked relaying his confusion.
"My Aunt was one of the witches hurt." The other boy stated, clearly not having listened to a word Gohan said.
"I'm sorry?" Gohan said having no clue how to diffuse this situation when the other boy wouldn't listen.
"Yeah well, be sorry about this." The boy then turned and threw a sucker punch towards the half-saiyan's face. On instinct Gohan threw up his left arm to block the incoming attack. The boy's fist hit Gohan's forearm, and unfortunately to all involved a sickening crunch sounded around the hallway.
"What the hell!?" The other boy crumbled down to the ground cradling his broken hand. "What are you!?" To the detriment of Gohan's rapidly worsening day, at that very moment a professor came out of his classroom to see what all the commotion in the hallway before class was about.
"Fighting between classes in not acceptable behavior. Ten points from Gryffindor and Hufflepuff." Professor Mutatío, the Transfiguration professor said and looked down on the scene seeing the Hufflepuff boy on the ground and Gohan glaring at him in confusion. "Detention Mr. Son. Mr. Glassman, go to the Hospital Wing now." Mutatío then marched off leaving a spluttering Gohan in his wake.
"But I…I didn't do anything?" Gohan said quietly to himself, unsure how he managed to lose points and get a detention.
"Sure you did you freak!" The other boy staggered back to his feet still cradling his hand before turning around and walking with his group of friends towards the hospital wing. The crowd dispersed, many accusing and disgusted looks being thrown toward the young saiyan. Gohan couldn't even have imagined yesterday that this could be both the best and worst day he's had at Hogwarts. I should have just dodged.
The rest of classes that day didn't get any better for the half-saiyan. In History of Magic there were constant low whispers and looks thrown his direction. He quickly filled Scorpius in on what had happened between note taking. To his surprise Scorpius let out a quick laugh that had the kids around them turning around to look at them.
"Oh, the old you're evil and your parents are evil, look out for him shtick." Scorpius brushed off the other boys concerns. "They're only dumb kids that want something to gossip about, don't listen to them Gohan. And it's totally unfair about the detention but I'm sure if you just talk reasonably to Mutatío about what actually happened he'll let you off." Scorpius smiled at him, hoping to make the other boy feel better before continuing on with his immaculate notes.
Gohan wondered if the rumors had made it through the whole school, apparently they had because as Scorpius and Gohan were packing up to leave after class was over, a Ravenclaw girl approached the duo.
"You really shouldn't laugh at other people's tragedies you know." To Gohan's surprise Scorpius spoke first.
"Look Tessa, my friend Gohan here found out he's going to be a big brother this morning, hense why we were celebrating. If you were to use that huuuge brain of yours, you would have asked one of us first instead of believing the first rumor you heard around the halls." That left the girl sputtering. With nothing to say the girl turned around with a 'humph' and stomped out of the classroom.
"Sorry you had to deal with Tessa Gohan, her group of girls haven't left me alone since we got here. They seem personally offended that a Malfoy was placed in their house, and since I've had better marks than her to start the year, it's now become a vendetta." Scorpius explained.
"No, I'm sorry you had to get into it with her because of me Scor." Gohan felt bad, he should be the one defending himself after all.
"Oh please, no apologies I finally had an excuse to tell her what an idiot she is." Scorpius grinned.
Gohan had heard bits and pieces about Scorpius' family, mostly from Albus who he knew was telling the truth about their friend. Apparently his father's family was on the wrong side of the last wizarding world war. Even though Scorpius' dad denounced his involvement and asked for forgiveness, the wizarding world holds onto grudges. Gohan couldn't help but think if his family held grudges against every person that was against them in a fight, he would have no family or friends, so the whole idea seemed pretty silly to the half-saiyan.
Gohan arrived in Potions class just as the bell rang to avoid any more confrontations. The ever punctual Professor Kama quickly announced that they would be brewing a new potion called Originali Corpus.
"This potion was discovered a few years ago and has been used for the purpose of regrowing lost limbs on amputee patients. Unfortunately, the effects of the potion can only last for 24 hours which has made it ideal for healers in the prosthetic limb arena. By temporarily regrowing the patients lost limb, a healer can replicate the size and look of the original lost limb, resulting in a much more comfortable fit of the prosthetic for the patient. Even though this potion sounds difficult, it is a relatively easy potion to brew. Also because of the nature of the ingredients, there have been no known side effects from accidental consumption which make it a perfect potion for First Year students."
Professor Kama finished her lecture and announced to the class to begin brewing. Albus and Gohan's potion was coming along quite nicely, as usual, much to the chagrin of the other students. Amelia Brown a Gryffindor girl working with Eddie who Gohan now realized was one of the girls talking about him earlier in Charms class, came over to look at the ebony haired duos potion. The blonde girl didnt even ask either of the boys if she could look, she just stuck her head in front of their cauldron. Albus let out an annoyed grunt as the girl was getting in the way of their work earning him an eye roll from said girl. Standing back up, the blonde announced to Eddie that they had to stir more before turning around with a large flourish bumping into Gohan whose back was turned to the cauldron.
"Watch it Son!" The girl spat without looking back and walked back to her station with Eddie. Gohan unfortunately bumped straight into the cauldron in his effort to not push the girl down and hurt her lest he send another student to the hospital wing that day. The potion splashed all over Gohan's robes as well as their workstation. Professor Kama quickly came over to evaluate the mess. Thankfully she had just been by a few moments earlier and had seen how well the boys' potion was progressing before the 'accident'.
"You boys were almost done with a perfect potion so you will get full marks for the day. However, I expect all students to be more aware of their surroundings inside of the potions lab from now on." The Professor's pointed expression was directed towards Amelia and Eddie who were both trying their best to appear innocent. Eddie meticulously stirring their potion while Amelia had her head buried in the textbook. After the professor turned back around to evaluate Albus' and Gohan's situation, Gohan saw Eddie's eyes perk up from his potion and send him a smirk. Trying to ignore Eddie who was obviously trying to ruin Gohan's entire day, the half Saiyan focused his attention back to their potions professor. Professor Kama proceeded to vanish the rest of the potion which had landed on the table and used a scourgify and drying spell on Gohan's robes to help clean him up.
"Luckily the worst that can happen with this potion is healing cuts extra well for the next 24 hours, so you should be fine Gohan," Professor Kama said with a wink that told the boys she wasn't mad about the accident, they were after all one of her favorite pairs of students.
Gohan felt the discomfort start after he left the potions classroom with Albus. It was his last class of the day besides Astronomy that night, while Albus still had Transfiguration to attend. They parted ways after walking up from the dungeons. The last thing that Gohan wanted was to be around other students at the moment so he decided to take a walk around the lake for a break, it was still light outside for a few hours before dinner.
Once he stepped out of the large front entry of the castle, the young boy felt a sharp pain on his lower back. Turning around, Gohan's hand came into contact with a furry appendage he hadn't felt in a very long time. Oh crap.
And so ends part 1 of Gohan's Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day. Sorry Gohan. Thanks so much for reading! If any of you noticed I decided to go full Toriyama for the professors names (mostly because I suck at names lol) Let me know what you think, hope to have Part 2 up soon :)
