"Boss?" Lila's chestnut eyes widened as she stared at her boss as he leaned on his umbrella, staring irritably at Theodore as he's in shock at the sight.
Catching up to her, finally, Lila turned her head towards Theodore as she remarked, "He's your brother?"
Nodding, Hammond replied that, indeed, Theodore's his younger brother, and Lila studied the two men.
Hammond's in his mid-thirties, turned thirty-six not too long ago, has dark hazelnut eyes, and a smile that's akin to a Cheshire grin. Half the size as Theodore.
Theodore towered him and thinner without the baggy clothes on him, he's also got icy blue eyes.
When Theodore put on his smile, it's enough for Lila to bemoan, "Oh, brother!"
Hammond, ire in his eyes, looked down on his brother as he walked towards him.
"Have you stopped your foolishness?" Hammond's Scottish came through from his time with their beloved Uncle. Every time he's angry, it comes roaring out, and when he's placid, his Nottinghamshire's usually out and about, with an occasional rolling of his 'r's and vowels.
Theodore meekly replied, "I've tried, but it seems, o'dad's enemies aren't bright and want me dead, how about you, old chum?"
He informed Hammond of his situation as he shook his head, his floppy chestnut hair bobbing as he looked upon his brother with disdain. "You've gotten into trouble with Sontaran?" Hammond raised his dark brow at Theodore as he summarized what'd happened.
Theodore stated, "It wasn't my fault! They chased me first and here I am. If mum were here, she'd box your ears for that tone of voice!"
Hammond pointed the sharp end of the umbrella at Theodore's throat as he leaned forward to tell his brother, "Mum left me in charge after she died. Father told me to keep you out of trouble. Have you forgotten already, brother?"
Pressing for answers, Hammond pointed the umbrella closer to Theodore as he squirmed in his spot.
Theodore balked, "My own brother doesn't believe me, the nerve of it, father would've heard me out!"
Cutting in, Lila pointed out, "And your dad got you into this mess, don't forget. Okay, boss, hobo, is there anyway we can get this over with, I'm barely able to get a bedtime snack before sleeping for a mere three hours before i have to come back here. What are we going to do about these killer potato men?"
Theodore took offense as he stated that he's not a hobo and these weren't his clothes to begin with, he got them from his father, they look hobo—ish, but they're not.
Eying him, Lila remarked, "So, because of your clothes I'm in this mess?"
Getting their attention, Hammond gave them his thoughts on the Sontaran searching for his brother.
"If they're coming here, perhaps we'll give them a taste of their own medicine, but if I help you, dear brother, I'm keeping my eyes on you," Hammond vowed to keep his brother under his watch after this incident's said and done.
Their parents told him to keep an eye on him and he will. Their younger sister's got more lemons than Theodore, so he's not at all worried about her, but Theodore's a special case, and he's not tolerating his younger brother's blasé views on life.
"Fine, fine, whatever torment you're planning to put him through, can it wait until after, please," Lila showed urgency as she pointed out that it sounded like there's heavy footsteps coming from the floor below them.
It's not the security guards and they're heavily coordinated.
Hearing the Sontaran searching the department below for him, Theodore asked for his Sonic Screwdriver back.
"I don't recall father giving you his blessing to take it," Hammond recalled nothing of the sort. Their father wouldn't given him it without letting Hammond and their sister, Odette, know about it beforehand. He accused of Theodore of stealing it from him, which he decried the accusation.
He insisted, "I never meant to take it from him, I swear!"
Hammond sighed as he realized there's more pressing matters to tend to, but he left off their conversation with, "You're talking to him about it after we settled the matter with the Sontaran, understood?"
Begrudgingly, Theodore agreed to Hammond's terms and he handed back the Sonic Screwdriver to his brother who took it into his large hands.
"You forgot to charge the crystal, again," Hammond pointed out as Theodore pushed the button and the Sonic Screwdriver hummed, the green light shining bright through the hole.
Theodore stated he planned to, hadn't he lost it, and gotten roped in a conspiracy.
The brothers and Lila worked together to set a trap to send the Sontaran away from them and it involved a new concept that she wasn't even aware of as Hammond showed an empty area of the employee lounge. He showed this to Theodore who studied it and asked some odd questions.
"Where does it go?" Theodore asked him.
Hammond replied, "Paradise for us, hell for them."
Lila guessed, "State fair?"
What, they're killer potato men, if there's any hell for them, it's a state fair with plenty of deep fryers and hot oil, they'll never escape the hell. For her and the men, it's paradise because it's a state fair and there's food. Granted, killer potato men or not, she's not curious about how they tasted deep fried and with ketchup.
"Oh, right, you can't see it," Theodore remembered that Lila couldn't see what they're seeing.
He explained the unusual concept of a tear.
Describing it like clothing, time to time, the universes have wears and then there's a tear here and there, periodically, they're usually harmless and seal themselves. Rarely, do they remain and grow into rifts. Humans can't see them, but animals and certain children have the ability to sense them, but they can't interact with them.
This one's ripe, about a day or two old, and the way Theodore described it, Lila's thinking he's pulling her leg, so he proved to her there's something there in the corner.
He walked over to the front of where the supposed tear's located… and stuck his whole arm in and it disappeared before Lila's very eyes that she had to go over there and witness it up close as he pulled his arm out.
Out of curiosity, Lila attempted to do it herself, but she's just holding her arm out.
"How'd you do that?" Lila asked him as Hammond shook his head as he sighed, watching his brother get a grin as he showed Lila how he done it.
Grabbing her hand, Theodore guided it and back towards the area his arm disappeared in.
Lila's eyes widened as she watched hers and Theodore's arms disappear through the rift.
It felt like she's putting her arm through the goop that kids make and play with but there's heavy resistance pushing her back through the tear.
Pulling them back, Theodore watched as Lila's amazed as she studied her arm, trying to understand what happened.
"I don't get it, we gone over that corner multiple times, why didn't we… I don't know… Stargate through it?" Lila inquired how it's possible for her to interact with the tear now, when it never happened before.
Hammond stepped in as he explained to Lila that, well, they're part Time Lords, and they can see and interact with rifts and tears unlike normal humans.
"Y-you're kidding me, right?" Lila tried to find one portion of sanity left in this strange situation, but Theodore affirmed that, indeed, they're part Time Lord, and that's why he's able to read her mind.
Lila recoiled as she balked at him.
"You can read my mind?" Lila eyed him.
Theodore said it so causally, "Well, I needed to know if you were going to hurt me with that bat or not!"
Oh yeah, the bat in her hand that she forgot because she's having an off-night that's only getting worse by the minute at this rate. Guess her dinner's her breakfast and lunch, coffee to wake her up, cold coffee to keep her going.
Pointing at him, Lila inquired about the potato in the room, "And what about the Sona-whatevers?"
Hammond bluntly told her that they're breaking library rules and they'll be punished accordingly.
"We'll discuss it after we deal with them," Hammond got their attention as he prodded them to follow his orders. He confiscated the bat from Lila as he reminded her that it's not permitted at the library.
Now, for the main event with everything for now cleared up for the time being.
Hammond dealt with security and anything that might've gotten in the way of the plan while Theodore and Lila worked together to lure the Sontaran to the lounge.
"I didn't go through it until you touched me, how're you going to get them through?" Lila brought up a good point as she worked with Theodore to pinpoint where the Sontaran were in the library and how to lure them to the trap.
Theodore explained as they're cautiously planting traps that due to his and his brother's nature, they can manipulate the tear with ease. Rifts, as they're bigger and distorted, different story, but a small tear in the lounge's easier said than done. He won't even have to go near it to manipulate it to trap the Sontaran. As easy as standing by the doorway, he can do whatever he so pleases.
"Okay, send them to a deep fryer so I get can back to my uneventful normal life," Lila prayed for this night to end.
She'll forget hearing about the Sona Bonos, the Sonic Screwdriver, the Time Lord bit, just want to go back to an uneventful life as a librarian making peanuts compared to the suits who come in every now again to run numbers.
"That's normal?" Theodore's mystified that Lila's rushing to return everything back to normal and forget everything that happened so far.
Looking at him like he's grown a third head, Lila summed, "I'm just a librarian. That's it. That's my end-all. I'll shuffle books until I'm collecting social security and then some. You can play alien invader somewhere else. Keep those potato skins away, too!"
Theodore listened to this and couldn't believe his ears that someone's willing to return to their normal life after experiencing aliens for the first time. As he looked over the corner, checking for the Sontaran, Theodore tells her, "Things can't go back the way they are, now."
Sontaran were aliens.
He and Hammond were, for the lack of words, part aliens.
Any chance of normalcy went out the door the moment they came into the picture.
Lila worked with Hammond for a while, further proving Theodore's point that her sense of normalcy isn't possible, anymore.
"Bo… Wa… Nah… Doc…?" Lila heard one of the Sontaran say as they're searching the adult literature department.
Oh, if they scuff up the books, poor Lynn's blood pressure's going to become the new Saint Helen!
Theodore poked her and she turned her head towards him as he silently told her that it's time.
Tugging on his coat, Theodore took a deep breath, and made his presence known to the Sontaran who instantly turned their massive heads towards him.
Putting on his pearly white smile, Theodore advertised himself plenty as he buzzed his Sonic Screwdriver at them, and made them angry.
Hoisting their heavy weaponry at him, the Sontaran barked orders, and Theodore fled with Lila running with him as they're trying to avoid the encroaching Sontaran, bent on annihilating them.
Running up the stairs again, Theodore nearly tripped on his scarf as it wildly bobbed near his feet while Lila grabbed his hand, pulling him up the last step, as they're running back to the employee lounge.
The Sontaran's heavy feet echoed throughout the staircases as they're not too far behind the fleeing Theodore and Lila. Barking orders at one another, they're prepared to fire their weapons, which Hammond wouldn't permit, it's against the rules.
Checking behind him, Theodore sees the Sontaran still behind them, and he didn't give them any chances to use their weapons, as he demonstrated with his brother's aide how he's able to manipulate the tear.
As their father taught them, it's about controlling their breathing, and keeping their minds focused on the tear. They focused on it equally before they began controlling it, changing what's on the other side of it, and with Hammond topping it off, they made the tear recipient to the encroaching Sontaran.
His long arm wrapped around Lila's waist as he pulled her to the side with him, Theodore watched as the Sontaran rushed inside the lounge, unable to stop themselves as they're trick into running into the exposed tear.
Sent to the other side in a bright flash of light, the Sontaran didn't have a chance to react, and before they get any ideas, the brothers sealed it off completely, preventing them from returning through the tear.
"Where did they go?" Lila's curious on what became of the Sontaran.
Handing back her bat, Hammond said that he and his little brother sent them on a journey through a deep jungle, one with plenty of nasty surprise for them.
There's no mercy for Sontaran, as their father taught them, they're abhorrently dangerous, and they're not trusting. Even with only three fingers, they'll still double cross anyone foolish enough to trust them.
That said, they're gone and hopefully, be the last they hear from them.
"Well, that's not too bad for a first try, hm?" Theodore gestured as he assessed the situation.
Nobody gotten hurt, the Sontaran gone, all's well that ends well, now he'll be on his way, and then Hammond nixed that idea completely before reminding them of the deal.
"I gave them my word, little brother, and I intend to keep it," Hammond raised his umbrella at Theodore as he stood in the lounge. "From here on, you're working for me, here at the library, until further notice. Do you understand me?"
His tone of voice something Lila knew too well, the tone of an authoritarian figure, and Theodore knew it well, too, as he flinched at the tone.
His arm twisted behind his back, metaphorically, Theodore's forced to reign on the deal, and agreed to the terms his brother put upon him.
He'll work in the same department as Lila since it's Hammond's department and he's to report to him every day unless it's his day-off.
"And another thing, I enforce a dress code. I trust you have something else to wear that isn't our father's, correct?" Hammond eyed his little brother.
Theodore insisted he does and Hammond's placated, but he then added, "Do something with your hair, too. I think you forgotten what a brush is, little brother."
The brothers went back and forth until Lila called out to them, reminding them of the time, and Hammond told his little brother to be ready for the afternoon shift that lasted until six.
For Lila, since Theodore roped her into this mess, Hammond granted her the ability to take the afternoon shift.
Thanking Hammond for changing her shift, Lila's allowed to leave the library while Hammond sorted out other issues with his brother.
Returning to her flat, Lila went straight to bed after dumping her batt in the umbrella holder and didn't bother waking up until around ten.
Getting up, Lila goes and showers, before grabbing something from the refrigerator, and it's around 11 when she started her walk back to the library.
Part of her wanted this as an elaborate dream she had and that there's no such thing as Sontaran or Time Lords, whatever, and she hoped it was, because it's too crazy.
Arriving at the library, Lila went into the lift and arrived at her floor before entering the employee only room where she clocked in.
Beginning her shift, Bill noticed straightaway something's amiss, and waving her hand, Lila summed, "I had a long night."
Bill asked if she heard and Lila replied, "What?"
Gesturing with her bracelet clacking, Bill responded, "We got someone new coming in."
Lila really hoped that was a dream.
She sheepishly asked Bill, who exactly, nobody told her that they're getting someone new in the department.
Someone stepped out of the lift with a group of people, wearing a fitted deep blue suit, his hair trimmed and blackened with bits of water droplets hanging from the curled ends.
He had a curvy smile as he tugged on his jacket and Lila immediately groaned as she said, "Oh, boy!"
THE END
