Calvin told Lila that he intentionally set up this dinner party to draw out his would-be killer and figured he could deal with the others while he was at it, two birds with one stone.
It'll be easier to write the guests off once the dust settles, since their transgressions weren't treated lightly in court, and for the Doctor, well, he's just an enigma, nobody would've come looking for him.
If they did, what're the chances they'll know what he looks like?
This is something that gave Theodore pause as he thought about what Calvin said and it gave him an idea, whoever told him about Theodore didn't seem to tell him about just what Theodore's able to do without anyone knowing.
Looking at her wristwatch, Lila sees they only have ten minutes left and then asked about the poison, to which Calvin said that he wasn't going to give them an easy way out.
The poison's just a red herring, a way to keep them in the mansion long enough he's able to spring the trap.
"Funny, I heard differently," Lila dryly remarked as she felt Theodore slightly elbow her as he hushed her.
Calvin replied with a stilted, "Come on, poisoned liver soup, not very original, is it?"
He had them beat there, but Theodore asked where he'd learnt the recipe, and the host replied that the strange man who visited him knew it and gave it as he was dissatisfied by the food served by Calvin's cook.
"And… you never seen him before?" Lila asked Calvin on the identity of the strange man who gave the recipe.
Shrugging his shoulders, Calvin responded that he never seen the man in his life, before that eventful day. Looked as out of place as the Doctor (Theodore) and the first man to arrive at his mansion.
"Okay, how about the guy who came after, you know him?" Lila kept up as she tried to bide time for them since they're safe from dying from poison.
Still in a situation, but not worrying about the poison's as good as a silver lining.
Calvin replied that he didn't know him either, didn't even know how he found where he lived, but he showed up the same day the first man said he would. Everything the first man said happened and when Lila asked about what he said about now, Calvin responded nothing's going as he said.
He thinks that means he's avoided his presumed death.
"What are you going to do, now?" Colonel Kraft sheepishly asked as Calvin held the revolver tightly in his grip as he eyed the guests with disdain. Calvin expressed his desire in killing them all without much thought, but considering the circumstances, he thought it'd best that they win their freedom. Whoever kills Theodore (the Doctor) first, gets to live, everyone else, they're not so fortunate.
Calvin thought if those unable to kill Theodore didn't succeed, then he'll simply chase them out of the mansion into the oncoming electric currents shooting through the area outside as they're speaking.
"And if we don't?" Professor Rose looked at him with his teeth clenching against his pipe. Calvin replied that they're better off running to their deaths, on account he served in the army, he'll easily kill them all with quick shots.
Colonel Kraft retorts, "One guy, one revolver, six bullets, I think we can manage."
Pointing his revolver towards the colonel, Calvin remarked that for his former colonel, he wasn't bright, after all, he wouldn't dare put civilians at risk.
Oh, wait.
"So, how about it, what's more important, your lives or the life of one?" Calvin asked them as he wielded his revolver.
Keeping Lila behind him, Theodore retorted that Calvin wouldn't keep his promise. He's willing to kill them all, even if they killed Theodore to save their lives, and even if he let them live, he'll hold their sins over their heads for the remainder of their lives!
The guests looked between each other as they're trying to think of their options while Theodore panicked while he spoke telepathically with Lila.
"What are we going to do?" Lila spoke with Theodore in her head as they're trying to think of a solution that avoided more deaths. Calvin wouldn't listen to reason and he's bent on making sure the guests don't survive the night.
Chewing on his bottom lip, Theodore pondered quietly before he saw the bright flashes of lighting bleeding through the beige curtains behind Calvin and he heard the loud roaring thunder echoing throughout the mansion.
"Lee, I have an idea," Theodore had an idea.
Lila asked what it was and he told her, "He doesn't know I'm a telepath!"
As evident, Calvin doesn't know that Theodore's not a normal person.
"What're you thinking?" Lila asked him.
Theodore told her his plan, "I can't do it much, but I can try to talk to him, and when he's distracted, I can grab the gun from him."
He'll have to do it in spurts to keep Calvin from rupturing a vein in his brain, but if Theodore times it right, he can speak to Calvin. If he can distract him with his disembodied voice, Theodore's able to get an edge, and get the revolver from Calvin.
Won't be easy, but desperation calls for desperate acts.
Theodore stared at Calvin and Calvin stared back, Theodore pictured a door in Calvin's mind. This door's the door to the mansion and he's able to see it clearly. He can see himself knocking on it multiple times.
Calvin blinked several times as he's confused, hearing the knocking on the phantom door, and Theodore kept it up, until the door opened inwards.
He can't see much in Calvin's mind, but Theodore's able to step inside while he spoke in his Uncle's accent.
"What're ya doin'?" Theodore talked to Calvin in his mind. "Throwin' away yer life for pettiness, yer no better than them!"
Calvin looked puzzled as he spun around, trying to find the source of the voice. He sees the guests, but they're not talking. That's not their voices and neither able to throw theirs.
"How much blood must spill before yer happy?" Theodore questioned Calvin's plan. "What're ya gonna do when this' all said and done?"
Calvin erupted in anger as he shouted aloud, "Shut up! Shut up!"
The guests jumped backwards as Calvin waved his revolver towards them as he shouted for the phantom voice to silence, but it didn't.
"Yer not doing it for justice, are ya?" Theodore questioned Calvin's motives for doing this. "Yer only innit fer yerself!"
Seeing Calvin's eyes growing wide as he's unable to identify the voice shouting at him. He shouted for everyone in the room to shut up.
"I'll kill you!" Calvin shouted as he wildly waved his revolver. "Show yourself!"
Theodore kept him focused on his voice, timing himself as he does this trick, and keeping an eye on Calvin's mental health. He'd have to stop communicating with Calvin if his mental health started deteriorating. It's a matter of when it'll happen and Theodore needed to carefully maneuver this.
Any point, Calvin's likely to start shooting them.
Can't have that, no good at all.
"Put down that gun before ya shoot yer eye out!" Theodore chided Calvin. "Yer a soldier! Ya should act like one!"
Watching Calvin growing paranoid, Theodore sees an opening, and when Calvin turned his back towards Theodore to point his revolver behind him, he took his opportunity.
Jumping at him, Theodore grabbed his shoulders and forced Calvin to the ground, knocking the revolver away. Ordering the guests, Theodore told them to get the gun away from him and they worked together to grab the gun from the ground as Theodore struggled with Calvin.
Calvin shouted as Theodore tried to hold him down while Colonel Kraft unloaded the revolver and scattered the bullets.
Bullets scattered across the room, clanking as they dropped to the ground, and rolled away, while Theodore fought with Calvin.
"Let me go!" Calvin shouted as he tried to push himself up from the ground, but the crafty giant kept him pinned.
Desperate to free himself from Theodore's grasp, Calvin shouted something about the strange man that visited him.
"He knew you!" Calvin shouted. "He knew you and said you were nothing alike!"
Theodore's caught off-guard as he heard Calvin shouting about the strange man, enough he asked him, "What did he mean?"
Struggling, Calvin replied, "He just said... he just said that you'll never be like him!"
Theodore doesn't know what Calvin's talking about, he doesn't even know the person.
However, Calvin swore that it's what the strange man said to him before he departed. He said that Theodore would never be anything alike, but Calvin doesn't know if the strange man's talking about himself or someone else. He never got to asking, he just wanted the strange man gone from his mansion.
He weirded him out with all the things he seemed to know and the strange air about him that sent shivers down his spine, it wasn't like Calvin wasn't going to throw him out forcibly.
Theodore couldn't ask more details about the strange man, as Calvin grabbed the lead pipe laying near one of the couches and swung at Theodore's head.
Instinctively, Theodore released Calvin to throw up his hands and protect himself, giving Calvin time to overpower him and start strangling him.
"Get your meaty hands off him, you damn dirty snake!" Lila didn't hesitate to go after Calvin. She wasn't wearing heels, just some memory foam padded boots, but it's enough for her to land hits on Calvin.
Calvin couldn't concentrate on Theodore and Lila at the same time, but he tried, until Theodore recovered enough to push Calvin off him.
Pushing himself away as he motioned with his hand for Lila to get behind and she tried but not before Calvin grabbed her ankle.
"I changed my fate!" Calvin declared. "The air's won!"
He's convinced that he won't die as he wasn't "pricked by silver" and that Theodore hadn't killed him. So sure of it, he declared he hadn't died as it's nearing midnight. The strange man told him his death marked the end of the day.
Calvin so convinced he changed his death, Theodore inquired if that's why he did the things he did, because he's scared of dying, and he thought doing all this would change his fate.
The strange man's words vague, he said that Calvin would die at the stroke of midnight, but it's two minutes, and he's not dead.
He's certain that he beaten his death.
"Get off me!" Lila struggled to free her leg from Calvin's hand as he grasped her ankle.
He pulled on her, trying to pull her down, but she kept fighting him enough time for Theodore to punch him square in the face, sending him backwards.
Releasing Lila, he's stunned as Theodore forced himself up and pulled Lila to safety.
Bright flashes of lighting blinded everyone as the storm raged outside and in the milliseconds the lighting blinded them, Calvin recovered from the punch, his face concave from it, and horrified the guests as they see the face with a dent from Theodore's punch.
Theodore's sure the punch would've knocked him out, but the wax disguise must've cushioned some of the blow or Calvin's endorphins are out of control!
Despite his face concave, it didn't stop Calvin from attacking Theodore further, trying to buy time as it's a minute from midnight.
He wanted to keep this up until 12:01 AM, meaning he'd survive!
Doing everything he can to waste time and survive his foreseen fate while preparing to kill everyone, Calvin desperately fought against Theodore.
Growing more insane by the second and his breathing becoming hoarse from the wax collecting around his nostrils, Calvin felt the sweat melting the wax, and instead of it sloughing off like his butler's it's sticking to his skin. Wax melting near his nostrils and hardening, he can't breath, his mouth's having problems, too, and he can't move them.
Slowly, he's seeing wax around his eyes, hardening around them, preventing him from closing his eyes, and he felt the stinging wax as it rubbed against his eyes.
His ear holes sealed shut from the wax and desperate, Calvin's unable to continue fighting against Theodore as his body forced him to try and rip the wax mask off his face.
To his horror, it's hardened so much, it felt like he's clawing at his own skin, and he became so desperate to breath, he sees the dagger lying on the ground, and attempt to retrieve it.
He grabbed the hilt, but the guests tried to stop him, and he swung his free arm against them as he tried to retrieve the dagger.
Nothing can come out of his mouth. It felt like a heavy cement block on his mouth. He can move his teeth, but his lips sealed.
Seeing the clock as 11:59 PM, Calvin narrowed his eyes on Theodore as he growled, and used the little strength he had left.
Pushing the others away, he managed to free the dagger from their grasp.
Wielding it, Calvin charged at Theodore.
Theodore used his long arms to stave off Calvin's assault and fought him for the dagger.
Struggling, he tried to grab the hilt with Calvin fighting him.
Lila and the guests helped Theodore during this as they tried to pull Calvin away.
Suddenly, Theodore lost the grip of the dagger and sees Lila and the guests stumbling backwards.
Looking down at the ground, Theodore doesn't see the dagger. When he looked up, he sees where it went...
Holding his stomach with blood bleeding through his pressed shirt, Calvin's frozen look didn't show his true emotions as he realized what happened.
Stumbling backwards as he eyed the dagger sticking out of his stomach, Calvin's unable to formulate words, anguish's all that showed in his eyes as he near the window.
His mind raced with thoughts as he's unable to comprehend what'd happen. He thought he'd won, the strange man said he'd die this day, and he did everything he could've to change it.
Yet, it still happened.
Maybe, maybe he shouldn't have done this?
Would've not having this dinner party prevented his death?
Or as the strange man said, if this didn't kill him, something else would, and it'd be far worse.
"Calvin?" Theodore called out, but Calvin didn't say anything as he's stunned at the sight of the dagger in him.
Looking around, Lila felt her hair sticking up and the wool in her shirt buzzing.
She thought it's just her nerves, but she sees the same happening to the others.
"Everyone, get the hell out, now!" Lila shouted at them as she motioned with her arms.
She pulled on Theodore's arm as she forced the guests to evacuate the study.
In a flash, lighting shot through the window behind Calvin, striking him precisely, and his body energized by it.
The wax sealed on his face and the electricity coursed through his body, touching the dagger, and in an instant, he fell to the ground.
Steam wafted from his body as he dropped to the ground, on top of the dagger, further pushing it into his stomach.
The glass shattered completely, the rain water effortlessly soaked the study, and slowly Theodore opened the door with everyone peaking behind him.
They see Calvin dead, blood pooling under him, and they're shocked.
"What're the odds?" Professor Rose mused as he's surprised that lighting hit Calvin at the exact time.
Lila looked around and saw an old grandfather clock in the hallway, exactly, 12:00 AM.
"W-what, now?" Scarlet asked as she's unable to grasp what'd happened.
Theodore replied that they're able to leave, now. He checked the front door and saw that whatever Calvin used to electrify the outside, it's turned off.
Likely from the lighting strike.
The guests hesitated but Theodore willingly stepped outside and only when they saw him standing fine, they piled outside the mansion.
Lila straggled as she felt this urge to look behind and when she did, she noticed the power failing in the mansion. Not only that, just before the mansion completely enveloped in darkness, Lila noticed that the grandfather clock she saw the time's missing from the hallway.
She's pulled outside by Theodore who brought her to safety outside in the downpour.
Initially, the guests seemed happy for the night finally ending, but Theodore didn't forget easily, and he said that he needed to inform of the crimes committed.
Not just what happened tonight.
Sheepishly, the guests asked if there's any other way, but Theodore bluntly told them that while Calvin's actions aren't excused, neither theirs.
Marching in the rain, he led them to the TARDIS where he pulled open the hidden door and phoned the authorities.
They arrived shortly after and took everyone's statements in the blanket of rain, but they got enough from them that Theodore and Lila watched three cruisers and three ambulances leaving the mansion after the preliminary investigation.
"So, that's just it, then, revenge, disgust, that's not what this whole thing's about, he just didn't want to die?" Lila wondered what the whole point of Calvin's plan was, since it's turned from disgust to people with skeletons in their closets, to him afraid of fate.
Sighing, Theodore replied that he doesn't know or care, all he knows, he wants to retire for the night after a long hot bath, and Lila opted to agree with him.
She couldn't help but ask him, "Hey, you saw it too, right?"
Theodore looked at her funny as he stood near the console and replied, "What do you mean?"
Lila gestured as she described the grandfather clock, "The grandfather clock, didn't you see it?"
There's plenty of grandfather clocks within the mansion, Theodore asked which one in particular.
"The hallway," Lila told him.
Shaking his head, Theodore said that he didn't see it.
Blinking, Lila recalled, "But, I swear I saw it with my own two eyes!"
Theodore comforted her as he said to her, "Lee, we had a long night, your mind's playing tricks on you."
Sighing, Lila conceded that this night's insane and all she wanted to do's lounge in her bed after a long hot bath.
Theodore took them home and they bid each other a goodnight as they returned to their respected homes.
"Tick... tock..." a voice echoed.
THE END
