I don't completely understand how the Misaka network works, so there might be something inaccurate according to what is canon in the original series. If that is the case, let me know, and I'll try to make a sharp turn into the right path.
Also, about the timeline this takes place in, I have no idea. I haven't really planned as much for this, and I haven't read the light novels yet. (You can totally spoil the light novels in the reviews, I do not care.)
Also also, minor spoilers for "Steins;Gate"
Mugino Shizuri sat comfortably in her beach chair. On her side was a cocktail of sorts, and in front of her was a pool. She was there along with her comrades in ITEM, who would usually have fun swimming in the pool. What was strange though, was that one of her teammates wasn't acting like themselves. She observed Frenda and Takitsubo playing in the water as usual. Takitsubo would blankly sumerge herself in the water at random intervals, and Frenda would be splashing water all over the place, much to Mugino's annoyance.
However, Kinuhata Saiai was on one of the beach chairs, intently reading a book as if she were trying to study something. Mugino didn't want to show interest or pry into what she's doing, but her curiosity still didn't show any limits.
"Oh, Violet Evergarden huh?" A male voice asked, staring at Kinuhata's book. It was their gofer, Hamazura Shiage. "Though I hate to admit it, the book made me shed tears."
What is he, a toddler? Looking at the cover, it looks like a kids book. He is basically asking for Saiai to make fun of him.
Kinuhata turned around quickly, revealing her tear-filled face to Mugino and everyone else. Mugino choked on her drink, and began to cough intensely, spitting out the cocktail.
"I know right, RIGHT? This book is super sad and super good. I can't stop reading this super book!"
(Does Kinuhata say 'Super' or 'Ultra'? I don't know, but I'll use 'Super' for the time being. Let me know if it's the latter!)
Mugino couldn't believe what she was witnessing. She sneaked a glance at Frenda and noticed that she too, was shocked by Kinuhata's unexpected side.
"I'll buy the next few volumes ahead of time because I'll know you'll be wanting more." Hamazura said with a laugh. Mugino wanted to punch him.
"T-this is just a quick read, okay? I don't need to see what's gonna happen next!"
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever you say." Hamazura skeptically left to buy the volumes anyway.
Mugino clicked her tongue. Great, now our gofer is unavailable for a moment. Would it kill you to have more faith? Sure, Kinuhata may be soft on this sort of thing but there is no way she is going to grow a dependency on something this foolish-
"I SUPER NEED MORE!" Kinuhata screamed as she tightly hugged the novel, shaking her limbs like a crying baby.
There's no hope for her. Mugino thought, as she stood up from her chair. "Cease this or that piece of scrap paper is going to evaporate." She spoke coldly. Kinuhata instantly stopped.
Mugino snatched the book quickly and looked at it. She heard Frenda and Takitsubo jump out of the water. She opened the book from the beginning.
Kinuhata suddenly activated her offensive armour around her fist. "HEY! You can't read that masterpiece when you're all wet! Go get yourself dried if you want to see too!" Mugino turned to see what was happening, but she diverted her attention since it wasn't to her.
"What's so good about this anyway?" She muttered, flipping the next page.
As soon as I heard my mention, I unmute the mic to start speaking.
"Hello?" I asked to test my voice. I hear the echo come back through the second monitor. "It's very nice to be featured in this show!" I said once more enthusiastically.
A loud range of applause was heard through the speakers. I wondered to myself if the sound was an artificial sound effect, or possible because there was a live audience in the place. It reminded me of all those talks and shows where there would be a host, a guest, and the large audience behind the live camera.
I suppose in this case, I'm the guest.
"We are very honoured to have you here, Hiiragi-chan." The host said. "W-wait, what should I be calling you, actually?"
"Oh, just "Ayaka is fine." I said, bringing up my modest tone. "I actually made up this pen name on the spot without thinking," I said with a laugh.
Of course, as I expected, there was a small laughter roaring across their place. It felt weirdly nice to have my voice be recognized and listened to by many people.
Then again, it reminded me of how extremely careful I should be when saying something.
"You're pretty funny, you know that? Let's start with the common questions, y'know?"
"When did you start thinking of the genius concept of your book, Sincerely?" The host asked.
I thought for a brief moment. I could say the "truth" where I thought of it pretty instantly. I knew that something like that would only appear in shows, so I decided for a reasonable answer.
"A very long time ago, actually. I think of these small 'what if?' questions and it's my hobby to start building up on them, adding more ideas, plot lines, and a conflict." I said. "More specifically, I've been thinking of Sincerely since I was about 10."
"That's certainly something; that means you've been thinking of this series for several years, correct?" The host asked.
"That's right!"
"Now, a lot of people in your new fan base have come to recognize that you don't have a credited Illustrator. Is it true that you do the pictures yourself?" The host shot the next question.
"Yes, I actually do them myself." The audience 'oohhed' in awe.
"Then, are you thinking of hiring an illustrator?"
"Not really, I love illustrating just as much as writing. If anything, I'd probably want an editor to help out on my sloppy habits in writing."
"Hah! That should open a big gateway to a lot of interested editors willing to work with you! Are you thinking of another book series you are going to write?" As he spoke, the word 'gateway' stood out to me. It kept on repeating in my head.
"Book… series?" I echoed in a daze. My mind raced, as the word "Gateway" turned into "Gate". It gave me a great, fantastic idea.
"Sorry about that, I actually am writing another series called Steins;Gate, with a semicolon. It's a bit of a unique name, but I hope you can stay tuned for it!" The audience roared with excitement.
"Wow, now that is news! This is probably going to spread like wildfire, am I right?"
"I suppose it would." I replied.
"Now, let's diverge from the topic of yourself, and talk about your books. When is the next book being released?"
"Well, I made 6 Volumes at the moment. Of course, some books haven't been published just yet. I simply left the release schedule to the publishers."
"Are you planning to write any more for this series?"
"Right now, the story has a nice firm conclusion that I wouldn't want to touch. Maybe I'll make a bonus Volume if people don't feel as satisfied."
"We all know how that ends, right?" The host joked.
"I wouldn't get too cocky." I said with a laugh.
"That's all the questions we have for the moment, and once again, I'd like to thank Ayaka Hiiragi for joining us today! Real honor to meet you by the way."
"Ahaha, thank you. I'd shake your hand if I were there in person."
"Well, we can do a virtual handshake. Here!" I smiled as I saw the host put out his hand, and shake it up and down. The audience seemed to like his silly personality.
That's a real normie for you.
I left the virtual meeting room and sighed. That was a big toll onto my heart.
I stood up, and stretched a bit. As I opened the door, Last Order turned out to be waiting behind the door, just to embrace me as I came out. I couldn't say that I was surprised.
"Hey, pipe down brat." A frighteningly familiar voice said.
Out came the albino I met before. I remember the almost thousands of times I've been brutally murdered by this man. I haven't really stopped to think about it first, but the more I recall, the scarier it feels.
Do any of the clones feel fear?
Though I didn't know the answer to this question, I certainly knew that I was.
"You." He spoke.
"Eeek!" I unintentionally screeched, my spine straightened up. I faced the albino, perhaps I sweatdropped a little.
"What's your number?" He asked, ignoring my reactions.
My phone number…? NO! He means my serial number.
"M-Misaka's serial number is 15712, says Misaka…"
Crap, my habit flew out!
Accelerator frowned, then he gave me an eye as if I was nothing but a scrap of metal. Will I ever get used to this fear?
"Can't you speak normally?"
"I-uh, Yes! Yes I can!"
"Alright." He took a deep breath and was about to say something. However, he halted instead. "Tch, damn it I can't do this yet." He turned around to leave, he had his usual figure with his hands in his pockets.
"Just you wait!" He said as he left. "I'll talk to you later." His voice reminded me of Katsuki Bakugou From MHA.
My heart began to slow down, and I sighed in relief. What was he going to try to say, I wonder?
That aside, I confidently clenched my fist. I now knew what I was going to write for my next series. I probably wouldn't have to change the title because many people would be aware of my works now.
As I said my goodbyes and thank yous, I reached my hand towards the doorknob of the front entrance.
However, I felt something like my back. I turned around to see who it was, and it was Last Order.
"You forgot your goggles, MISAKA MISAKA says, handing your goggles!"
"Ah, thanks." I said, realizing that I really did forget those. I took them off during the interview.
As I took them back from Last Order, she suddenly whispered something to me.
"Try actually using those goggles if you ever need help with writing your next series. We might be able to help!"
I expected a third person manner of speech, but she was pretty straightforward. "Okay." I responded, without much hesitation or thought.
"Awaa!" I unintentionally squeaked while stretching. That was eventful. I suppose I'll go home.
Yoshikawa gave me the card that had the rest of the revenue that Sincerely has gotten me. I didn't want to brag much, but I was pretty filthy rich. I could finally buy the remainder of the equipment that I couldn't afford back when I got started. I probably didn't even need my part-time job anymore. (Though I still pity their short-staffness, so not just yet I suppose.)
I rubbed my stomach, I was feeling pretty hungry. I figured I was going to a normal restaurant for the time being. I could splurge a bit, right?
I walked to a nearby family restaurant.
"Welcome!"
I sat down and read the menu. I ordered the 'Izuku Midoriya' of japanese food, Katsudon. My seat was right next to a large window, so I was able to see the street from there. Across the street, was another poster featuring the cover to Sincerely. Everywhere I went, I saw her face; Violet Evergarden, not Iron man.
"Here you go! Thank you very much!" The waitress said with a smile, handing me my simple bowl of Katsudon. As I was about to take a bite, I suddenly heard a 'bonk' onto the window.
On the window was a short nun. She has thigh length, silver hair, and large green eyes. She shamelessly showed a kissy face as her cheek slid against the glass.
"..."
"..."
We both made eye contact.
The next thing I knew, the nun was sitting across from me. I figured that this girl was none other than Index.
"So we meet again Short-Hair! Or… are you Long-Hair now?" She tilted her head, inspecting me. She must think that I'm Mikoto.
"You can call me Miyano, I'm the sister of the person you're thinking of."
"Nope! You'll be 'Long-Hair' from now on!" Index said, which agitated me a little. Her stomach suddenly growled loudly. She clenched her stomach, pained.
Aww, jeez. There's no helping it, huh?
I felt like I had just witnessed a large-scale scientific experiment. I stared at my card, trying to make out on what had just happened. When I arrived home, the events that had happened in the restaurant were still in my head.
I only ordered her a Katsudon… and another… and another…
My head only spun thinking about it; How can one petite girl fit so much food in her little stomach!? I vividly remember that Index was supposed to have a large appetite for comedic purposes, but I think I really pushed it too far.
Like pumping a balloon, I wanted to see how far she can go with her 'black hole' of a stomach.
It just didn't seem to stop, until the chef came to apologize that they had run out of ingredients. I don't know if they lied, but if they did, it was the right decision.
My card definitely took a toll from that; I'll have to finish this new novel ASAP!
I rushed over to my setup. Laptop and drawing tablet booted up. I was ready to begin. First, I had to brainstorm the events of Steins;Gate.
The story took place in modern Japan. It was about a delusional mad-scientist named Hououin Kyouma. (His real name is Okarin, but who cares?) He suddenly stumbled upon making a time-machine.
But I wanted to change the setting of this place to Academy City, where esper abilities really do exist. It was to help the readers feel a sense of realism behind the story. In order to do that, I had to adapt to the enviroment.
Okarin's "Reading Steiner" could be one 'ability'. Of course, it wouldn't make sense for some characters to have abilities.
Quickly, I jot down the list of characters and the abilities I'm going to give them. This is going to up the intensity of the novel, yet still retaining the novel's structure and logic.
!SPOILERS-START!
My list is as follows:
Okabe Rintarou - Reading Steiner, Level ?
Mayuri Shiina - Level 0
Hashida Itaru - Level 0
Makise Kurisu - Also Reading Steiner, Level ?
Kiryu Moeka - Some offensive ability, Level 4.
Urushibara Luka - Thermal hand, Level 1
Feiris - Light manipulation, Level 3
Amane Suzuha - Teleportation, Level 4
I figured that both Suzuha and Moeka needed to have strong abilities, to up the stakes for both sides. The scene where Okabe needs to take away Moeka's phone would be a bit troublesome, so I'll have to change it so Okabe actually narrowly makes it alive.
Suzuha's teleportation ability is also a perfect fit, seeing how she fights the armed man quickly almost exactly the way Kuroko does.
Feiris probably needed some flashy ability to stand out more.
!SPOILERS-END!
However, I came across a HUGE roadblock.
"How am I going to make the time machine make sense in the first place?"
In my world, we all just kind of skipped through the logic of how the concept of time travel worked. However, in Academy City, there's bound to be some people nitpicking about how the science and logic behind the D-mails and time travelling is very flawed. At least our lead's "Reading Steiner" makes sense, as it is a completely new ability to begin with.
I wanted my story to at least be plausible; a lot like the concept The Matrix uses to stand out. The Matrix made us think that the concept of the movie could very well be true, instead of us immediately concluding that the story is a work of fiction.
I was terrible at this kind of scientific research to begin with, and this felt bone-chillingly similar to the Chemistry Research paper I had to turn in within a few days, all while Genshin Impact had their limited-time event with tons of rewards.
"I need help…" I muttered, supporting my head, elbow on the desk.
"Try actually using those goggles if you ever need help with writing your next series. We might be able to help!" Last Order's voice rings in my head.
"I suppose I'll give it a try…" I put on my goggles, all the way down this time. The green light on the goggles flashed on, and my head was filled with all kinds of thoughts, feelings, and memories.
"Gh!" I grunted, remembering the time Accelerator painstakingly ripped my foot off.
I didn't feel anything at the time, but I still knew that the emotion I should have experienced was terror.
It continued. As if it were a virus that eats up anything joyful in my head, despair almost overwhelmed me with force. Why did I shoot him? I should have known that shooting the bullet only leads to that bullet being redirected at me.
But all that was interrupted by a voice. No, several voices.
"Welcome back to the Misaka Network, MISAKA MISAKA greets 15712 once again!"
"I really appreciate the novel you wrote, says Misaka 10032."
"I'm amazed that our sister managed to write such a masterpiece, says Misaka 14924."
"H-huh?" I thought blankly with my goggles on.
Hamazura brought the novels to the building. He entered the elevator, and pressed the button. He made sure to bring all the books that are up to date, so Kinuhata could be satisfied.
He smiled. Kinuhata is going to regret what she's said. Good thing I know what's going to be best for her.
As the elevator was almost on the right floor, he neatly stacked the books and prepared to give the books as swiftly and quickly as possible. Just so he can keep his bones safe.
The elevator door opened, and Hamazura spoke up.
"I got the next volume!"
Dead silence. Hamazura didn't think anyone could feel this vulnerable. He couldn't look any of the girls in the eyes, and their silence said it all. I guess they don't care about these series as much as I thought they would.
"Well… I'll just set it down here…" Hamazura nervously set down the books, far away from the pool so they wouldn't get soaked.
"..."
"..."
"Hey…" Kinuhata's voice suddenly spoke up.
Hamazura went into the other room, so he couldn't see what's happening. Nonetheless, he could still hear the girl's voices.
"I read the book first right? I super should get the rights to read the next one first." (Kinuhata)
"Oh? You always tend to get cocky when you have a close distance with your opponents. You oughta know your place." (Mugino)
"Hey! I want a peek too! That book series is the best I've ever read!" (Frenda)
"Um, can't we all just read it together-" (Takitsubo)
"""SHUT UP, OKAY!?""" (Everyone but Takitsubo)
"Well, how about if Hamazura gets to decide who reads the next ones!?" (Frenda)
"I super agree!" (Kinuhata)
Wait, how did they resort to me!?
"Where the fuck is he!?" (Mugino)
I have to get out of here! Hamazura thought, almost pissing his pants.
