As it turned out, Rupert Malone didn't let anything slip out of Sanctuary, he held it in a grip, didn't let anyone sneak out anything without him knowing, this included maps. He didn't even have human workers help in the construction, Al found out that Rupert commissioned tonnes of construction supplies, but never disclosed what he did with them after that fact.
He never disclosed anything and any attempts met with him shutting down any conversations. Detectives couldn't breach that fortress, even the decorated ones couldn't make a dent. Everything he did was legal, his money clean, and nobody really gave much thought, except for, well, the ones closest to him.
"Who was he, Walt Disney?" Lila drew parallels as both men kept their projects close to their chests, with a distinction that character actors didn't kill guests with their padded costumes.
It's assumed that Rupert Malone used the servants in constructing the underwater city, because he didn't have to worry about labour laws or leaks, that'd explain why he gave Richard Simms the amount of power he had over them.
Of course, until Theodore and Lila heard things, they didn't like about the servants that made the pits in their stomachs grow, it's going to be fun when they caught up to the servants.
Why them of all things were used as servants?
Guess once they find Richard Simms somehow surviving among Sanctuary or the servants, they'll have their answers.
It's a stretch that maybe they're overthinking it and it wasn't what they're dreading, but the more they're trying to convince themselves otherwise, nobody describes one of their most ill-tempered nemesis without skipping a beat like that.
On their minds, they wondered how Richard Simms managed to capture and utilize Daleks, of all things, they didn't see anything suggesting that there's aliens other than the Daleks.
Stranger and stranger, this adventure.
Finding Rupert Malone's office's their top priority, since he'll likely have a detailed map of Sanctuary tucked away, and find anything they needed helping them understand just what was he thinking in allowing Daleks into his supposed underwater utopia.
Getting to his office's a different story with the barnacles growing like weed, the collapsing floors, everything else, but Theodore wasn't deterred as he marched forward with Lila trailing behind him.
There's more than one way getting somewhere, as his late father taught him, both conventional and unconventional.
If there's no way in or around someplace, make one, and if you can't make one, you force one into creation with whatever's on hand.
"I'd suggest using your thingy and getting us into Rupert Malone's office, but I'm guessing no-go, since apparently some idiot thought Daleks was a good idea, right?" Lila looked towards Theodore as she haphazardly asked if he's able to create or use a tear for them getting into the office without spending too much time wandering around Sanctuary.
Pondering the question, Theodore murmured that he could, the Daleks might've not known he came here, in fact, he can gauge where they are by how they respond to the sudden presence of a tear.
"Hm, bit drab here, but I can make one, yes," Theodore noted that he's capable of making a tear for both of them, he wouldn't guarantee it'll take them inside the office, but it'll at least get them a direct path.
If the Daleks pick up where he's at, they'll see how they respond, and go from there.
Cracking his knuckles, Theodore mentally prepared for the creation of the tear, utilizing his late father's teachings, taking slow breaths before he felt the energy creating a tear in front of him.
Slowly, it formed, until it's strong enough that it'll take them both without collapsing suddenly, and he carefully held onto Lila as they approached the unseen tear.
Holding onto Theodore's stitched long coat as he held her waist, Lila felt the cold air coming from the unseen tear as Theodore held their arms up while they walked, like before, Lila saw hers and Theodore's hands disappearing into the tear, then their arms, their shoulders, and their bodies enveloped through the tear.
It wasn't like Stargate, per se, but there was pulsating energy of different colors, a storm within the pulsating energy, the swirls, the strangeness of it all. Lila felt the surge of electricity passing by those storms, her feet dangling over them, that it felt like she was in a science fiction novel.
At the end, she sees the bright light, almost blinding, but when they went through it, she felt her feet on the solid ground, and her eyes adjusting to the different lighting, her breath temporary shallow as it felt like she flew into the skies.
When they left the tear, Lila felt like she walked through a freezer, Theodore held her close, and she felt warmth returning to her body as she felt the changes in the surroundings.
She eventually recovered and they glanced around where the tear took them as it slowly collapsed behind them.
It wasn't the office like Theodore warned, but they're not on the first floor, anymore, that much apparent.
Her chestnut eyes moving slowly, Lila sees that the second floor's open in areas, with railings, but debris blocked the staircases leading down into the first floor, and there's a massive water fountain that collapsed under the weight of the barnacles that there's a massive hole where they carefully maneuvered around, trying to get across to the other side, where there's another map of Sanctuary.
It's like the first one, but of the second story.
There's Rupert Malone's office, they're not far from it, and there was a private club that Rupert Malone only allowed certain people on his list access. Nobody else went there and nobody wanted to risk their place in Sanctuary for it, that it appeared.
Following the map, the two focused not falling to their deaths as there's holes that'd make potholes on the interstates pale in comparison.
While they're avoiding death, they're looking out for any signs of the Daleks, but they didn't show up, not yet, at least, and Theodore shrugged as he suggested they probably have difficulties getting around with the cave-ins. He hoped, at least.
Well, Daleks didn't suddenly arrive and try to shoot them, and Theodore found out why as they arrived at the only other area of the second floor, Rupert Malone prohibited the servants from coming up to the second floor, by the way of Richard Simms.
There's a warning sign stating that servants weren't allowed on the second floor, there's writing underneath the bold lettering, etched into the porous wood, stating servants can't see the second floor. They don't have the full-map of Sanctuary and have restrictions placed in their programming.
If guests needed anything, they'd have to go back to the first floor.
Of course, when it came to Daleks and restrictions, it didn't stop them one bit, hamper may be, but they're not deterred by programming.
Chewing on his inner lip as he walks with Lila close to him, Theodore studied their surroundings, the ceiling above them held up better than the first floor, and underneath their feet, squelching nosies coming from the ruined red carpeting.
Saltwater dripped from the walls, the rotted smell made them gag more than once, as they tried hurrying along.
On their way towards the office in the centre of the second floor, Theodore sees the windows into the darkness outside, nothing there, casting a dark shadow over the barely lit second floor as they walked towards the gold painted door with Rupert Malone's name carefully etched on it with a gold plate for good measure.
His lock's different than all the others, not even an access port for the Daleks' uses, it's standardized, but heavily locked down from normal uses.
A flick of his trusty Sonic Screwdriver, they're inside without issue, and inside the office of Rupert Malone, it's frozen in time.
There's papers scattered on the walnut desk, still pristine, the chair turned slightly, as it looked like Rupert Malone stood up, a glass bottle of half-drunk whisky next to the glass, and an ashtray with a cigarette hanging on the side.
Rupert Malone smoked it briefly before putting it down and it burnt down to the stub, as cigarettes did then, and smelling the faint smell, Theodore deduces that it had undertones of different flowers.
Seems that Rupert Malone liked his cigarettes with the floral essences of lavender, clover, and mint.
Digging around his desk, Theodore sees sheets where Rupert Malone imported them by the dozens, apparently liking their tastes.
"Oh right, they had flavored cigarettes," Lila recalled that before the ban, flavored cigarettes were all the rage at one point, some with apple, some with flowers, it depended on who made it, and now, anyone who wanted them had to make their own, at best.
His large hand going through the drawers, Theodore found scattered bullets for a revolver, but there's none in the drawers, and he found documents that went between him and Richard Simms with Rupert Malone asking about the servants.
He sounded worried in his inquiries with the servants, seeing how they're showing increasing problems, and Richard Simms assured him that the servants remained in top shape.
It didn't satisfy Rupert Malone and he banned them from the second floor, demanding the blueprints for the second floor deleted at once, and Richard Simms begrudgingly agreed.
Rupert Malone kept documents of incidents with the servants, going far back before the Christmas party, with the servants starting to bark orders back at the guests, and hurting one with an unauthorized weapon.
"You told me these were safe!" Rupert Malone decried Richard Simms' designs and in the following message, Richard Simms swears that he didn't even outfit them with weapons.
The more Theodore went through the documents, it showed that Rupert Malone became increasingly concerned about the servants, but not because he had a big heart all along, only because he didn't want the guests leaving in droves in repulsion.
It ended with Rupert Malone calling into question Richard Simms' abilities creating the servants and Richard Simms ended up telling him to come down to the Ward, he'll prove to him that the servants weren't dangerous.
Well, they know what happened there, and this gave them a timeline just before the Christmas party.
The servants started showing issues, Rupert Malone started worrying that it'll affect confidence in Sanctuary, one of the servants hurt someone, and he demanded Richard Simms fix the problems in the servants. Richard Simms wanted him to come to the Ward so he could show proof of his attempts at fixing the servants and that's where it stopped.
Giving the time, this happened a little before the Christmas party, and without any sign of Rupert Malone anywhere, they'll likely find what remained of him in the Ward.
"Oh hey, look, this must be the keycard," Lila dug out the large keycard from the closet filled with designer coats and jackets.
Large like a plane ticket, with holes punched in a peculiar order at the top. Seems like anyone could've replicated if they tried, but the more Theodore studied it, he noticed intricate carvings that couldn't be seen from the naked eye, making it difficult for forging.
With the keycard for the emergency subs, that's that, and digging around, neither two found a keycard for the Ward. If there's any way to the Ward, Rupert Malone had it, but at least they dug around enough to find detailed maps allowing them a way into the Ward.
There's a hidden elevator leading from Rupert Malone's office directly to the Ward, but given the sorry state Sanctuary's in, the elevator couldn't possibly work at all, and neither wanted to try their hand.
Sorting through documents in the formerly locked filing cabinet, Lila found documents pertaining a medical procedure done on Kenna and reading it… painted what happened.
Kenna's pregnancy came to light, she was taken away, Rupert Malone ordered the procedure, and she fought against them until Rupert Malone had her tranquilized for the duration.
Interestingly, there's paperwork regarding Richard Simms showing interest and it's as bad as it started to sound with him imploring Rupert Malone to "think it through" as there's a signature missing on the paperwork for disposal.
"Oh, dear god, I wished I stayed in bed," Lila uttered as she showed Theodore the paperwork regarding Kenna's procedure.
Reading this made Theodore's famous steel stomach curdle in disgust and he turned away from the paperwork as Lila shoved it back into the filing cabinet.
"Theo, stop me if I'm talking crazy, Richard Simms… did… you know?" Lila broached an uncomfortable concept of what might've happened after the procedure, it was dated a month before the Christmas party when the servants started acting violent, and Theodore frowned as he uncomfortably muttered.
"I… I don't know," he only said.
