To consider:

-I neglected to explain earlier but in this fan-fic Emilia will be behaving dominant within her faction after briefly losing Subaru to his initiative at the watch tower where he lost his memories and then having to micromanage the plan to cross into Vollachia. She learned that dealing with excess of personal initiative and lack of proper communications in a delicate operation is usually a pain.

Chapter 2:

The party arrived at the capitol and where walking around the central marketplace in order to kill time before their audience with the Knight Commander Marcos Gildark. Subaru was interested in books about machineries and the newest inventions in the kingdom.

Subaru: "I'm impressed that the best new thing you have a new model of a printing press." Subaru had an ironic tone.

Merchant: "What do you mean? This beautiful machine can print complete books without having to separate the papers first and without the need for supervision. It's the first to ever do this, it will revolutionize the world by spreading books further and wider than ever before."

'Sound like we are about to hit the Renaissance if Nobels don't ban this.' Subaru thought.

Subaru: "It's interesting, but not what I'm looking for. Do you know the name and residence of the inventor?"

Merchant: "If you're not buying why should I tell you?"

Subaru: "I get the feeling you'll tell." He placed 2 gold coins on the counter.

Merchant: "Well I haven't met the inventor in person, but he recently moved to Priestella, his name is Ivan. If I'm not mistaken, he is kind of desperate for a patron other than the Hoshin Company." He hands Subaru a paper with the relevant data.

Subaru: "That is convenient. Very well, a pleasure."

Merchant: "A pleasure indeed."

Subaru turned to Emilia with a smile and waving the paper.

Emilia: "So what was that all about? Why do you need that inventor?"

Subaru: "What do you mean need?"

Emilia: "You want to recruit him I believe. Shouldn't you ask me first?"

Subaru: "I should, but not now I'm preparing everything in advanced for when we return to the mansion."

Emilia: "You mean the private talk you want with Roswaal and me?"

Subaru: "You've got it, as expected, anyhow now I want to search for a good blacksmith particularly one that works steel."

Emilia: "Steel you say? Maybe I´ve got you then, a merchant I knew in Elior Forest sold a lot of steel weapons and tools, Puck usually praised the quality of the tools. If we find him, we can ask him where he got the stuff."

Subaru: "And I got my answer from an unexpected place, Emilia-tan you're so smart to remember such a detail."

Emilia just tugged Subaru's arm with her to a different post.

Emilia: "Now let us go see something I want. I have spoiled you enough."

Subaru: "It makes me so happy to be spoiled by you. So, what do you want to look at now?"

Rem and Beatrice where behind them watching as the couple talked disregarding the world around them.

Rem: "Say miss Beatrice, are these two always so chummy like this?"

Beatrice: "Yes they are in fact. Why, could it be your jealous?"

Rem: "It´s not that, I think I understand why he was so sad in Vollachia now."

Beatrice: "They are trying to escape. We must follow I suppose."

Rem: "But I want to see that marketplace." She indicated a marketplace filled with drawings.

Beatrice: "Oh, never mind they just went there. Let's go take a look then."

They continued to look and wander about in the market waiting for the hour of the audience.

A few hours later:

The party was found by Roswaal outside of the Knights Garrison and after a brief talk they went inside into Marcos´s office.

Marcos: "So what is it you guys want to inform about."

Roswaal: "Its…" He cuts himself from speaking after seeing Emilia´s gesture discomfort for his initiative.

Emilia: "We wish to inform you and the counsel about the event that transpired in Vollachia after my knight got unwillingly involved in their brief civil war."

Marcos: "As far as I was told by Anastasia the nonaggression pact is saved. What else can you add?"

Emilia: "My knight is concerned by a word the Emperor Vincent Vollachia gave him before leaving."

Marcos: "I hope it is relevant to…you know my specialty, if not you should seek an audience with the counsel of wisemen."

Emilia: "Subaru." She hated being so formal but they are in front of Marcos in one of the most formal places of the kingdom.

Subaru: "Yes Emilia-sama. Sir Marcos I know this will interest you."

Marcos: "If the hero that took down the whale says so. I was hoping you were mistaken." He sighs tiredly.

Subaru: "In consideration for you I will keep this short. Me and Rem here got sent by some unknown force to Vollachia where we contacted both sides and helped the Loyalist win. After the war was essentially won by the loyalist faction Vincent confirmed that the nonaggression pact will be upheld. But do you know why the civil war started?"

Marcos: "Because a strong faction disliked some of the decisions made by the emperor and wanted to replace with a compliant puppet."

Subaru: "Yes, those are secondary reasons, the main one is him agreeing to the nonaggression pact."

Marcos: "For not going to war?"

Subaru: "Yes, you have to admit it, if an enemy nation was waiting for the opportunity to attack us this will be the best time to do so."

Marcos: "Indeed your right. But I don't see where you're going."

Subaru: "When does the pact expire."

Marcos: "When we elect a…" He fell silent and focused on his thoughts.

Roswaal: "Seems like you just hit the jackpot." Emilia was dumbstruck by the lack of formality in everyone.

Marcos: "As soon as the royal selection ends and the new monarch is learning to wield their executive powers, we will still be vulnerable."

Roswaal: "As expected from someone as cunning as you, putting two and two together"

Subaru: "Vincent stated that to his pain he will most probably have concede some peculiar demands to stop future schemes against him."

Emilia: "Sir Marcos this is the second time the emperor has had to deal with such schemes for the same reason."

Marcos: "So then we must keep in mind that war on our southern border is almost inevitable then."

Emilia: "As much as it pains me to admit it."

Marcos: "Very well thanks for informing me, I will inform the council about this as soon as I can."

Roswaal: "We will leave it to your capable hands then."

Marcos: "Yes. Now you better get going I will arrange a reunion with the council, thank you for the information."

Subaru & Emilia: "You welcome sir."

All the company made their way out after delivering the bad news.

Subaru: "He seemed tired do you know why Ros-chi?"

Roswaal: "We had a recent skirmish with a detachment of 'lost' soldiers from Gusteko."

Subaru: "That explains a lot. Oh, Rem sorry for bringing you here to end up doing nothing."

Rem: "Don´t worry I grew accustomed to it in Vollachia, and the afternoon was fun regardless."

Subaru: "I´m relieved you're not mad." He made a sigh of relief.

Rem "I didn´t say I wasn´t mad."

Subaru: *gulp*

Emilia: "Any way, let´s get moving shall we. Crusch wants to see us after regaining her memories."

Subaru was sad remembering this. He thought 'Why did she get her memories back but not rem? It's like…no if Rem doesn´t get her memories back she died.' He was left to wonder. For the last gluttony was executed while he was in Vollachia and wouldn't ever give an answer, he remembered how it felt to receive his authority.

Subaru: "Disgusting." He muttered but no one heard him.

Roswaal was already gone. He went back to his domain as per orders of Emilia.

1 Hour Later:

Subaru: "Man I was doubting we would ever make it after we got lost."

Emilia: "Don't say that Subaru we just took a detour."

Rem: "Yeah and we took 30 minutes extra to get here because the princes wanted to."

Emilia: "It´s not my fault! And since when do you tease me?"

Rem: "Maby I wouldn't if you hadn't let Subaru lose us."

Subaru: "Hey, don't get mad with her Rem, I was my fault!"

Rem: "Yes it was, but you're under her orders, she takes the responsibility. She has to grow up if she wants to lead a nation."

Emilia: "H-hey, you can´t just treat me like that remember your…"

Rem: "My place? I don't remember ever having accepted you as my master!" Rem was angry.

Subaru: "Well let´s calm down. We are about to meet Crusch who like you Rem lost her memories but unlike you wasn't sleeping."

Rem: "And what is it with me recuperating my memories? I am happy as is. Won´t I die and get replaced by the old me if that were to happen."

Subaru: "I lost my memories to. Remember? And I assure you it now like getting overwritten, more like adding."

Rem: "You're too fond of the old Rem to believe you with that…and that's why I am here."

Emilia: "Now that we have calmed down, we can enter."

Felix now decided to reveal himself he just happened to stumble upon the group and found them facing their backs at him.

Felix: "Yes it would be a good time to do so."

Emilia: "Wha…? How?"

Subaru: "How much did you here."

Felix: "Does it matter? You guys are here to talk about this after all."

Beatrice was coming out of the building.

Beatrice: "Will you come in? I suppose."

Subaru: "When did you enter? I didn´t see you."

Beatrice: "I was too tired of dragging my luggage, so I went straight to drop it inside while you fought out here in fact."

Emilia: "Let's move to, we must be tired to." She turned to face Felix. "When will we see Crusch?"

Felix: "You will see her today, but maybe it's too late to talk about that…" He pointed to Rem who was moving inside. "Regardless, if need be, you guys can talk about it tomorrow morning."

Emilia: "Thanks for the information."

Felix: "I´m now needed in another building so I won't accompany you now."

Subaru: "Then we will talk tomorrow I don't wish to leave you out besides, I'm worn out."

They went to greet Crusch and then got installed in their guest rooms, one for Subaru and Beatrice, another for Rem and the last one for Emilia. Rem and Beatrice fell asleep quite fast, but both Subaru and Emilia where worried enough to not fall asleep as fast.

Subaru was worried by the dreadful reality that he may had failed to save Rem as her hero. The old Rem the one he grew to love was dead and in her place was a completely different person. He continued to fight the negative thought.

As for Emilia she was worried about Subaru, she remembered how sad he was when they found Rem sleeping and she knew that Subaru was conflicted by the loss of the old Rem, she too was but not as much as Subaru and Ram. They all fell asleep a while after.

The next day after breakfast in Crusch´s office:

Emilia: "Thank you for accepting us Crusch."

Crusch: "I should be thankful that you didn´t just drop me when I lost my memories."

Beatrice: "What do you think our faction is I suppose?"

Emilia: "We couldn´t do something like that, we are friend after all."

Crusch: "Then what is it that you wish to talk about?"

Subaru: "Oh, it's about…"

Rem: "Me. I want to talk about how you regained your memories in detail and more importantly where the you that forgot her past went."

Rem and Crusch where the only ones talking while the rest just drank tea and heard occasionally commenting only to be ignored.

Half an hour into the talk Felix arrived, Felix, Emilia, Beatrice and Subaru went out to talk while Rem was speaking with Crusch.

A few hours later the two finished to talk and the Emilia camp started to head back to the Mathers Domain.
