The Surprise
Seven Weeks Later...
Tails walked next to Sonic as they walked together towards Amy's house.
"You've seriously got my curiosity piqued, Sonic. It's not every day that a surprise birthday present requires me to clear my schedule for a week." Tails said, smiling over at his best friend.
Sonic smiled back.
"Well, here's hoping it's worth it. We're really hoping you love it, buddy."
Underneath that layer of confidence, Sonic was, in actuality, quite nervous. He and Amy had been planning this for weeks, all without a whisper of a hint to the fox that they were surprising for his thirteenth birthday. He was hoping it was going to go off without a hitch, but he wouldn't really know until the surprise itself had been revealed.
As they came up Amy's front walk, Amy, who had been watching and waiting for them, opened the front door and stepped out onto the front mat.
"Happy birthday, Tails." She greeted, coming in for a hug, which he immediately returned. "We've got your birthday present waiting inside, but for maximum effect, we're going to have to take you inside wearing this." Amy told him, holding up a simple black blindfold.
Tails nodded with a smile, letting her know she had permission. She passed it to Sonic, who wrapped it over his eyes, and gently tied it in a knot in the back.
His vision now effectively encased in darkness, Sonic took his hand and guided him through the front door. He was immediately pulled to the left.
"Alright, stairs here, be careful." Sonic said.
That was odd, Tails thought. His present was upstairs, and couldn't be brought downstairs? Step by step, he and Sonic slowly ascended to the second floor, with Amy right behind them. At the top, they made a left. The fox had been in Amy's house plenty of times, so he was pretty sure that they were taking him to... The spare bedroom? To his knowledge, there was nothing in there but a few cardboard boxes; they hadn't had any use for that room yet.
Sure enough, after ten more steps, he heard a door open directly in front of him, and he was once again guided forward through the doorway into the room. It was six more steps to what he assumed was the center, where he was stopped, and Sonic slowly released his hand. He heard both of them take a slow breath.
"Alright, buddy. We both are really hoping you love it. So here you go..." Sonic said, and Tails felt the knot holding the blindfold on begin to loosen.
"Happy birthday."
The blindfold fell away, and Tails' vision returned, and he indeed found himself in Amy's spare bedroom, and his heart nearly stopped at what he saw, and his next breath was immensely hard to come by, as he couldn't believe his eyes.
In front of him against the far wall, was a crib, and it was immediately apparent that it was intended for someone considerably bigger than an infant. The white sheets were tightly tucked in, with a baby blue blanket neatly folded in the center, patterned with white clouds.
Next to the crib, in the corner, was what could only be a changing table, again, far bigger and longer than what would be needed for a baby. On the shelves built into the table were stacks of disposable diapers, along with a few bottles of baby powder, mineral oil, and packs of wipes. At the foot of that, was a diaper pail.
In the opposite corner was a playpen, with a rocking chair right next to that. On the floor, taking up the majority of space in the room, was a large foam playmat, with roads and buildings printed all over like a top down view of a town.
"Tails?" He heard Sonic softly call out right behind him.
The fox silently turned back to his best friend, still unable to wipe the stunned look off of his face.
"I want you to know that I didn't run right home and blab to Amy that night. Awhile ago, we had been talking about how nice it would be to practice taking care of a baby before actually having one of our own. So... When I saw you in your bedroom that evening, when you told me that you do what you can on your own, that's one of the first things that I thought of." Sonic told him.
Amy stepped up to Sonic's side.
"We were really nervous about how you would possibly take this, but we were really looking forward to surprising you today. So if you want, you can be our baby for the next week. If not, just say so, and we won't say another peep about it. You have our word." She told him with a reassuring tone.
Tails turned back to the infantile furniture on the other side of the bedroom.
"Don't feel like you need to stand still, look around all you like." Amy encouraged him.
The fox took slow steps towards the crib. The first thing he noted was how high the bars were; if he was placed inside, it would take considerable effort on his part to climb out without aid from his tails. The only thing that wasn't true to what you would find in an actual baby's crib was the presence of a pillow, which looked brand new and super comfortable. Hanging above the crib was a mobile with clouds, planes, and even miniature Chaos Emerald decals.
He took a breath, then stepped over to the playpen and rocking chair. Scattered about the back wall of the playpen were a stack of wooden alphabet blocks, a shape puzzle, a couple plastic toy planes, and in the corner, a small Sonic plush.
Then, he turned to the right corner of the room, walked past the crib, and stepped up to the changing table. It was topped with a soft plastic pad, but his eyes didn't linger on the top for very long at all before his gaze fell to the three shelves. On the top shelf sat packs of wipes, a bottle of baby powder, and a couple bottles of baby oil. Then, on the bottom two shelves, were 30 white disposable diapers. His hands quivering, he reached out, and pulled one out from the top of the stacks. His eyes widened as he gave it a soft squeeze in his hands, immediately realizing that it was nearly twice as thick as the ones he had been ordering through the mail at his workshop. Lastly, he noticed at the top, the landing zone was a blue sky filled with clouds and biplanes.
He felt a shiver run down his spine and slowly ebb across his entire body, as he wasn't entirely sure if he was dreaming.
"Tails? You okay, buddy?" Sonic asked softly.
The fox took a quiet breath as he turned back to them, still holding the folded diaper.
"W-Wow. I mean... Wow. You guys clearly put a lot of thought and work into this. How could I say no?" Tails asked, still a bit nervous.
"Don't think about it like that, pal," Sonic began. "We put all this work into this room because we wanted it to feel authentic. If you really don't want to, everything here is well within the return windows, and either at the end of the week or right now, you can take whatever you like back to the workshop with you. We'll even help you set it up over there, if you like."
Tails' eyes passed back and forth between Sonic and Amy.
"Now," Amy started, getting his attention. "Before you say yes or no, I want to point out that if you agree, there are several rules you'll have to follow. As Sonic said, we want this to be as authentic as possible for all three of us."
"Alright." Tails said, ready to listen as Amy opened up a notebook.
"First and foremost, the bathroom will be off limits to you. Your diapers are your bathroom; you have to use them for their intended purpose at all times. Do you think you can do that?" Amy asked.
"Well, I've only wet in them. I... I haven't had time to, you know, poop in them." Tails admitted, blushing.
"Well, you'll have the time this week. No holding it. If you have trouble with that, we'll figure out ways of helping out."
Tails nodded.
"Secondly, you're not allowed to ask for diaper changes. We'll be checking your diapers throughout the day, and will decide when to change you. Next, just to be very broad, no caring for yourself. The whole point of this is to be under our care. You'll be checked, changed, fed, bathed, cleaned, and put to bed by either Sonic or me for the entire time."
The fox nodded, signifying that he was listening and taking in the rules Amy was laying out.
"Bedtime every night begins at 9pm. You'll be bathed, changed, given a bottle, and then in bed by 9:30, and that's where you'll stay until morning."
Tails glanced back at the crib, then back to Amy, and nodded.
"Lastly, Big Time and Little Time. Every now and then, we'll change things up, both to further enhance your second babyhood, and to let you get small helpings of your adulthood too. During Big Time, you can go to your workshop with one of us to work on your machines or whatever you like, as long as you're in diapers and using them. Then for Little Time, you have to crawl everywhere, and don't use any words that a toddler wouldn't use. And if we put a pacifier in your mouth, it has to stay there until we take it out."
Amy lowered the notebook, and looked Tails in the eyes.
"Well, that's all I could think of. I didn't want to make it too convoluted. We want to enjoy this just as much as we hope you will. So what do you say, birthday boy?"
Both pairs of eyes were on Tails as he swallowed, and looked down at the diaper he still held in his hands.
"I am going to have to think very long, and very hard... About how to properly convey my gratitude for the fact that I have two of the most absolutely amazing friends who would actually do something like this for me."
Tails raised his head to look at Amy and Sonic as he fought back tears of joy with a smile.
"Yes. Absolutely, and thank you so much."
