A/N: SO I didn'T want to leave you guys hanging too long between updates...although sometimes I like too. This one starts where I neft the last one so enjoy.
"Ruzek, you okay?" Kim yelled over the gun fire.
"Yeah, I'm good." When the last shot resounded, he nodded and when he locked eyes with her, he crouched down and Kim followed behind, a hand on his shoulder. He pushed through the front door and they cleared the house.
"Damn it." He cursed when he was sure they were alone.
"At least we know what's going on." She re-holstered her gun.
"We're no longer looking at blackmail. They've taken the Marshall's and we're back to square one." He growled, placing his gun back at his hip, walking out of the house and towards the car. This setback was not helping him get back to his daughter and they were looking at another long day.
"They're getting sloppy Adam, they're bound to make a mistake. Let's just get back to the district and see what the others found." She took her place in the front seat and drove back to the Twenty First. "We'll catch them Adam, I promise." She watched as his left leg bounced up and down. She could see the frustration rolling off of him, shoulders tight and jaw set. She knew that anything she would say wouldn't be received well so instead, she let him temper himself down on the way to the district. They went up the stairs together but Platt flagged him.
"Two seconds Ruzek."
"Go on up, I'll be right there." She nodded and he gave his attention to his desk Sargent. "Everything okay Sarge?"
"Little miss sunshine brought this over for you." She handed him a paper bag. He hated that he had missed her but couldn't believe how lucky he was that that little girl was all his.
"Thanks Trudy." He took the bag with a smile and went up to join the rest of the team.
"Everything okay Ruzek?" Barnes was the first to ask.
"Can't get better than this." He raised the bag and smiled, placing it on the corner of the desk. "Tell me we have something that we can use." He slumped in his chair, leaning back.
"We pulled the Marshall's financials and there were several large sums of money that were taken out of their account." Atwater gave the file to Kim.
"Which means that we can't rule out the blackmail theory like we first thought." Adam looked at Kim expectantly.
"What else do we really know about the Marshalls?" Jay questioned.
"High profile couple. He's an attorney and she's a psychiatrist." Barnes looked through the file. "Nothing jumps out. Twenty-year career for him, twenty-two for her and she's head of the psych department au Lakeshore for the past year. Their daughter Lindsay is top of her class in her senior year."
"Nobody that clean gets their daughter abducted." Al remarked. "Any high profile cases that went sideways or malpractice cover-up?"
"Halstead, Atwater. Look into the law firm, see if you can't find anything. Barnes, Al head to Lakeshore and see what you can find there." Voight gave them their assignments.
"We'll keep digging from our end here." Adam said. Everyone left to pursue possible leads and Adam delved into the file once again.
"So blackmail is still on the table, the Marshalls have been taken, you think they were ready to talk? Tell the truth?"
"It makes sense." Adam shrugged. "They tell me that she's missing, but proof of life keeps them quiet until they can't take the pressure that became too much and they threaten to talk when you started digging."
"Fear makes people do strange things." She looked through the other family files and still she couldn't find any connections and that irritated her. "I still can't find the nexus to link all of these families together." She slammed a file on the desk.
"Hey." Adam slammed his hand against his desk, an idea suddenly popping in his head. "I know what my answer is but did you ever cross reference Danny Marshall and Sophie Marshall?"
"That never even crossed my mind." Adam's fingers started typing furiously as Kim came to lean over his shoulder. They both shared a silent hope that this oversight from them would pay off.
"Got it." Several articles popped up on his screen.
"Shit." Kim cursed and returned to the family files. "Walk me through it."
"Hazing gone wrong leads to death of Jessica Norris." Adam read the headline. He scanned the article, getting to the sentence where both Marshalls were mentioned by name. "Mrs. Marshal was the Psychiatrist that worked the case with her husband."
"Wouldn't that have been a conflict of interest?"
"Absolutely. And I don't even get how an ethics comity would let that happen to start with."
"It's easy to pay off the people who are supposed to make the right decisions." She reasoned, Adam having to agree to that.
"Who are the girls that are involved?" Kim wanted a confirmation of her suspicions.
Adam eyed the rest of the article to find the names. "Kassandra Johnson, Jenny and Jessie Carter, Lindsay Marshall, Sarah Roberts and Nathalie Robertson."
"They're all there." They finally got the break that they needed. "That's why we couldn't find the nexus. They all went to Lake Forest Academy but they were all transferred to different schools after the scandal broke."
"What is it?" Voight came out of his office.
"We found it boss. It's all related."
"Let's get the rest of the team back here."
"We're here. What do you got?" Kevin asked. Adam and Kim proceeded in telling the whole team their findings and
"So where is Arruzo now? Kevin asked.
"We need to get eyes on him." Adam confirmed.
"I also want you to grab his financials and find out what he's been up to as of late." Kim added. "If we pull this off, all these girls get to go home to their parents, and we put him away for a long time."
"I'll cross reference Arruzo with the Norris's, see if there's a connection." Barnes offered and Adam gave him the nod before everyone started piecing it all together.
Adam looked at the bag on the corner of his desk and pulled it closer, looking through it. There was a sandwich in there with a Gatorade along with a twinkie and a note.
I made lunch for you to make sure you wouldn't go hungry while you work with grandpa Hank. Be careful running after the bad guys and I hope you catch the mean person that is making people sad.
Love you to the moon and back
Kenzie xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Her scrawny handwriting looked a lot like Rebecca's and that small gesture made him miss her even more. She would make his lunch each morning and leave him a note just like that, Mackenzie slipping an I love you in there too.
"You okay there brother?" Adam looked up with watery eyes at Kevin.
"Yeah, all good." He smiled at his best friend and showing him the note.
"That's my girl, looking after her daddy."
"I wish she could be six again."
"You guys will get there but, in the meantime, you're doing great."
"Thanks Kev."
"Just looking out." They all returned to their task at hand and it was only when night fell that they were ready to make their move. Arruzo was the Norris's driver when Jessica was born but went into the private investigating business only a couple of years later. They had never been mentioned in the sentence ever since so the connection had taken some digging to find out.
"So, we're all clear." Kim strapped her vest on the shoulder. "We do this clean and close this case after we bring these girls back home."
"Copy that." They all said as they finished getting ready. Adam rode with Kim while Halstead was with Atwater and Al with Barnes, leaving Voight riding solo until Antonio returned.
"You ready to get these guys?"
"It's been a long time coming." If they did this right, everyone would be back with their families before the end of the night and all their hard work would finally have paid off. Arruzo had a house just outside of the city that he had purchased cash weeks before the first abduction and that was their best lead. The rest of the ride was spent in silence and everyone took their positions. "Alright everyone, look sharp." Adam called into his two way. Adam made eye contact with Atwater and both teams moved in together.
Kevin picked the lock, stealth had to be their top priority and they moved together inside until they parted ways. Kim stood close to Adam as they cleared the whole house, Kevin and Halstead clearing the top floor. Surely the people that had their trucks parked in the front lawn were with the girls because Atwater and Halstead returned to the main floor empty handed.
Al and Barnes circled out back to make sure the exists were cleared and Voight had the front in case they had unwanted visitors. Silence filled the room as they moved towards the center of the house, the only communicating coming from eye contact and hand movements. Kim was the first down, Adam following behind, Kevin holding the rear and Halstead making sure they weren't bothered. Adam made eye contact with one of the girls and pressed his fingers to his lips to make sure she didn't talk, and Kim gestured to him that she had eyes on Arruzo and Michael Norris.
"Chicago PD. It's over you son of a bitch." Adam growled as he put the barrel of his gun against Arruzo's head. Commotion started around him, but his focus was on Arruzo. He pulled cuffs from his belt and twisted his hand violently against his back, pressing his chest to the ground. "You really thought that we wouldn't catch up to you."
"Took you long enough." He chuckled as Adam pulled him roughly to his feet.
"Trust me, you won't be a problem going forward." He pushed him forward as he called ambos for the girls. He pushed Arruzo up the stairs as the Marshalls reunited with their daughter. Adam took insane pleasure as he put Arruzo in the back of a cruiser, Norris having been put in a second and he could finally see the girls that they had rescued. Most of them were worst for wear but they looked healthy enough that a few days at Med wouldn't fix. He knew they had to go take statements and such but that was pocket change over the fact that it was finally over.
The whole team was in the roll-up hours later, removing their vest as they came back from Med where the girls were reunited with their parents.
"We make a good team." Kim told Adam as they both removed their vests; the rest of the team already having left to return to the bullpen to close up the case.
"Yeah, it's been a pleasure." He agreed.
"So, what happens now?"
"I go back to the beat, back to my daughter." There was no other way that went.
"Intelligence lost a valuable asset in you Adam."
"I do miss it, but my daughter is my priority." He put his gear away. "She's the reason why I do this job day in and day out."
"She's one lucky little girl." She smiled at him.
"I'm the real lucky one." He put his star around his neck. "I'll see you upstairs." Kim smiled at him and nodded as she watched him go back up.
The team was out of the bullpen quickly, leaving Adam, Kim and Hank alone in his office.
"Thank you for your help on the case Sargent." Kim extended her hand to Voight.
"Pleasure was all ours Detective Burgess. We can finally close the lid on this and move on."
"I hope one day that we'll get to work together again." She turned to Adam.
"Sargent Voight knows where to find me." He shook the hand that she extended his way. "Good luck Detective." He said to her, referencing the talk they had in the very beginning in the breakroom.
"Same to you." She thanked them again and left them alone.
"Thanks for helping us and I'm sorry I put you in such a tight situation."
"It's okay Sarge, I'm glad I could help put an end to this case. It was tough not to be able to give these families some closure before."
"Rebecca would be proud of you."
"Thanks, Sarge."
"Come on, get out of here, go see your daughter."
"Night Sarge." He tapped the frame and left Voight's office. He looked around the bullpen and sighed, heading back down and to his parents to pick Mackenzie up. It was late but he was off the following morning as per Platt's request, so he was going to spend the day with Mackenzie and just give her his full attention.
He drove to his parents place lighter and he couldn't wait to tell his baby girl that it was back to their one on one. His mother was waiting for him, his father having gone to bed already.
"How'd the case go?" She asked him after they shared a hug.
"It done and the girls are back home with their parents." He took a seat at the kitchen table and his mom gave him a cup of coffee.
"That's wonderful honey." She sat next to him. "I'm proud of you."
"Thanks Ma. How was she tonight?"
"She misses her daddy, but she's been good, as always."
"Thanks for looking out for her, for helping me out."
"We're always there for you Adam." They stayed in silence like that a little bit as Adam drank his coffee. They had spent several evenings like that since Rebecca's death and it always soothed him to be able to count on his mother's calming presence. "How about you go pick her up and enjoy your day off with her tomorrow? It'll be good for you both."
"That's the plan, thanks mom. He stood and kissed her cheek before placing his cup in the sink. He leaned against the doorframe of Mackenzie's bedroom. He watched her chest as it rose and fell slowly. She looked peaceful and happy and that was enough to sooth his own aching heart. He walked in and leaned down gently on the side of her bed. "Hey baby, are you ready to go home?" She stirred and turned on her side.
"Did you catch the bad guys?"
"We did baby." He kissed her forehead.
"I knew that you would."
"We usually do yeah." He chuckled softly. "Come on; I'll carry you." He let her sit on the side of the bed and loop her arms around his neck before he pulled himself up and hoisted her against his hip. She put her head against his shoulder and closed her eyes again. His mom met him by the door with Mackenzie's bag and she slipped her shoes while she slept against Adam.
"Goodnight sweet girl." His mother kissed Mackenzie's temple.
"Good night Ma." She kissed his cheek and gave the hand that was holding Mackenzie a pat.
"Good night." She waited for him to have settled Mackenzie in her seat and sitting in the driver's seat before closing the door. She kept doing that no matter how old he was, and it was something that had stayed with him since he was a kid. He kept stealing glances in the back seat at his sleeping daughter and he was simply thankful to be able to be her daddy and couldn't wait to spend his day off with her.
A/N: SO the team finally put Arruzo and Norris away for what they did and that's how Adam and Kim part ways...but will it be the last time their paths cross? Please take a few seconds to leave a review before you go, I always love to read your thoughts. - Sarra
