Chapter 4:Contradictions
Gon has never been this nervous before. Passing through dreary hallways, with a dangerous individual at his side, and the stench of blood getting stronger and stronger... it all makes Gon cringe.
How the hell can they do this and still feel nothing!
A few minutes of walking and the man stops in front of a door. Gon takes a deep breath. The stench seems to be coming from inside... inside where Killua must be...
The doorknob turns. His heart hammers against his chest.
Killua... please be okay! Please hold on! I promise I'll get you out of this hell!
The door opens and Gon feels his knees weakening.
Killua is... fine?
Sure, his head hangs making his fringe cover most of his face. Sure, dry blood is caked all over him. Sure, his clothes are soaked in blood... okay maybe he's not soo fine...
But he's a lot better than Gon expected him to be. For once, his fingers are intact while Gon's still feel strange and heavy.
"You lied." Is the only thing Gon manages to sputter out of his mouth.
They spared him.
Gon shakes his head. No. They didn't do him a favor with this. Killua is still hurt.
A scoff from the man beside him. "I tried to convince Danchou."
Gon shoots him a glare before rushing to examine Killua.
"Killua... please tell me you're there!" Gon falls on his knees to clasp his cheek, tears threatening to cloud his vision. Closer up, he looks worse.
Killua's mouth twists into a weak smile. "G-gon?" He croaks out.
"Killua! Killua, don't worry, I'm here!" Gon perks up.
"G-Gon?"
"Yes Killua?"
"You didn't... join the Spiders, did you?"
A heavy weight crushes Gon's chest. Every hint of hopefulness is wiped away from his face. A snicker comes from behind. Gon ignores it.
"You didn't join the Spiders, right?" He reiterates.
"Killua," Gon begins, slowly, unsure of what to say, "I'm sorry."
After a moment of silence, Gon panicks. "Killua?"
No reply.
"Killua?" He shakes his friend.
No reply.
"KILLUA!" Tears stream down his face. Killua... he can't be dead, right? No no no! That's impossible! But then... what did happen? Why did Killua just suddenly leave him like that. Did he--
"He's unconscious." His unpleasant companion answers.
"But--"
"And your two minutes are over." He narrows his eyes.
Gon falls into a rage. "No! We did not decide on a time limit. You LIAR! I'm staying here until Killua wakes up. I don't give a damn. I'm not letting you touch him anymore. You bastard. I don't care--"
A shiny golden coin is flipped into the air. "Heads or tails?"
Gon growls. "I don't wanna play your stupid games."
A shudder crawls up his spine. Dark shadows start filling in the room. His breath hitches, hand twitching, reaching out for Killua. He can't let him get hurt...
"You're forgetting your position here, you ungrateful brat." The man spits out.
A whimper escapes his mouth. This aura. His bloodlust. It's worse than Hisoka's at heaven's arena when he didn't even know how to protect himself. It's worse than anything and everything. Even worse than when he first experienced it.
A crack echoes in his mind.
No... please no...
The man's eyes crinkle, hinting at a thankfully hidden sinister smirk. "Follow."
The bloodlust is retracted, leaving only an eerie residue behind. Gon is forced to relent. He reluctantly stands up and trudges behind him, stealing one last look at his friend before the door is unceremoniously closed.
Gon paces his room back and forth. He's been doing this for what seems like hours now. He can't rest, not when Killua is--
A soft knock at his door.
"C-come in."
It's Chrollo.
"Are you settling in well?" He asks with a polite smile. "I hope the simplicity of the room doesn't bother you."
Simplicity? The room is more comparable to a prison cell than a bedroom. Four nen protected walls, a nen protected door, a bed in a corner, a table in another, and a door leading to the washroom.
Chrollo notices his blatant disgust. "I'm sorry that you have to stay like this. It's only temporary until we're sure that you'll be obedient." He runs a hand on one of the walls. "Kortopi's work." He adds.
"I won't run away and you know it." Gon fires back.
"Oh? Your little speech when we first met wasn't very convincing. Gon," He manages to creep him out just by saying his name. "if I don't restrict you, you'll try to free Killua and escape with him. Let me, however, reassure you-- we are not going to mistreat your friend."
"Bold words coming from a murderer. If you expect me to trust you then you are an idiot." Gon scowls.
Chrollo leans against the back wall, the hint of a smirk evident on his lips. "Isn't your friend a murderer too? He's killed a lot for someone his age. You're quite the hypocrite, aren't you?"
"Hypocrite? You are the ones that mercilessly kill others and then mourn your own. You're the hypocrite!"
"That's a different matter." He calmly replies. "Besides, killing and mourning are two seperate things. We freely kill anyone who's not a spider and we don't mourn them. However, if it is Spider, then we don't kill them, and if they die, we mourn them. Our rules are as straightforward as that. Can you say the same thing as that?"
"You're selfish! Every human life should be valued the same-- except... except one like yours!"
"Hm... let's see, why do you value your friend's life over your own then?"
"That's a different matter!"
"You're contradicting yourself now, Gon."
"Shut up!" He snarls, still not deterred by his comments. "If you came here only to criticise me, you can leave already. I'll never agree with your stupid beliefs!"
"Actually, I was here to tell you that from tomorrow onwards, you'll be training with Nobunaga. He'll come fetch you in the morning. Be ready then, and co-operate with him well. Good bye."
"Training?" Gon echoes, long after Chrollo's gone.
He can't tell whether that's good for him or bad. He could get strong enough to beat them through it but he despises the idea of him working for the Spiders.
He needs to escape as soon as possible. Right now would be the best time. He remembers the way to Killua's room. The real problem, however, is his own room.
Drawing back his right arm annd gathering as much aura as he can in under a minute, he tries to focus it all in his fist. Bracing himself, he charges towards the door, smashing his fist into it.
Waves of pain overtake his already brittle fingers. He steps back to admire his work, yet... nothing. He wasn't able to put a dent on the damn wooden door!
Next, he performs Ten. It takes almost another minute but be gathers enough aura to charge one more time. This time, he throws his entire body into the door. But again... to no avail.
Not even a damn scratch on it.
The next hours are spent experimenting. He attacks the walls, floor and the ceiling. He even tries throwing things at it, betting on the fact that maybe it only repels his aura. His theory, however, is proved wrong when the only thing he manages to do is shatter the table and chair.
Grumbling under his breath, he finally falls onto his bed. Bloody and bruised, he wants nothing more than to do... well, nothing.
He doesn't even bother to clean the blood off of him as he snuggles into the blanket and closes his eyes.
An hour passes by.
Probably another.
Gon can't sleep.
He turns to his left side, hoping for some comfort. None. He's more restless than he has ever been. Even more so than when he was supposed to be getting the badge from Hisoka. The adrenaline rush back then had improved his nerves a lot. This time, however, nothing of that sort comes to help.
He thinks back to his conversation with Chrollo. A hypocrite? Technically he is siding with a murderer. But he's sure Killua has changed. Besides, he was forced to do it. They do it out of free will.
Rewinding a little back, he's hit in the face with the memory of Killua sitting bruised and battered in that stuffy room. Thinking back, Killua was still in a horrible condition. He shudders to think what his condition could have been if--
Another thing bothers him. Why did Chrollo not let that guy-- what's his name again? Doesn't matter-- hurt Killua. It's not like he was siding with him? Gon would have had to join nonetheless.
A crack echoes throughout the room. Gon can tell that it's just the wooden chair or table finally collapsing on itself. Besides, the sound made is different. Even so... his heartbeat screams in his ears. He wants to run away. He doesn't want to stay here a single moment more.
Please. Kurapika. Save us!
[A/N: Alright, Science exam tomorrow and I'm done! Since I've already studied enough I decided to take another break to write this!
Lilphantomtroupelady: Good ideas! I was planning for him to grow some sort of bond with the Spiders coz he's such a cinnamon roll! Although, I will try to make it as natural as possible. About Hisoka, yeah, I think he can be quite useful. I will try to make use of him too.
Guest: thank you very much. :D
Neodigital: thank you for still following through. I hope I can meet your expectations.
Thank you so much to everyone who reviewed or followed/liked, and to those too who only read it.
I think I'll do some Kurapika's POV next. Altho I'm not sure. Any ideas?
