Addison slipped of the gurney she had been sitting on and walked towards the elevator.
She half expected it to be swamped with a bomb squad or hospital guards of some kind. To her surprise there weren't any. The entire bomb squad must already be up at the surgical floor. On the other hand.. no one in their right mind would voluntarily go towards the bomb, she knew that.
She entered the elevator with clammy hands. Was this actually rational or was this decision swayed by the feeling she had this morning.
She was pulled out of her thoughts when the ping of the elevator announced she was at the correct floor. No turning back now, she cursed to herself.
The entire hallway was empty. She started walking, slowly but determined. There they were, Grey and Yang. Just a little further down the hall and she would reach her destination.
''Addison?'' Meredith asked surprised.
''Yes, Dr. Grey?'' Addison tried to stay professional.
''Wha- what are you doing here?''
''Shouldn't I be asking you this, Dr. Grey. Last time I checked I'm the attending and you're the intern.'' Professionalism is the way to go with this. Interns always backed away in New York when she threw in the system of hierarchy. She didn't like it, but sometimes it needed to be put to good use.
''I had a discussion with Dr. Burke. He agreed to let me stay here, as long as I stayed away from the OR. Christina agreed to stay with Dr. Shepherd's team. The bomb squad just wants us as far away as possible'' She said ''I meant the other Dr. Shepherd.'' she added quickly.
''Well alright'' Addison said.
Addison could see Dr. Burke and what she assumed the head of the bomb squad in the examination room looking at x-rays. She came back to reality when Meredith added ''That's Dylan, he's head of the bomb squad who are leading this.''
''I see''
''Addison- I mean, Dr. Shepherd. Is there a message from the chief? Is there something wrong?'' This was the first thing that popped up in Meredith's mind.
However when Addison stayed silent and looked towards OR2 something in Meredith's brain connected. ''Addison, I know this isn't my place, but I'm sure Derek would want you to stay downstairs.'' She guessed ''Whatever you want or need to tell him, I'm sure he knows and would want you to be safe.''
''You're right Dr. Grey. This isn't your place. I'm not here for a personal matter, I'm here for Dr. Bailey.'' She stated emphasizing the words Dr. Grey. All the while Christina was silently witnessing the scene before her. Addison turned back around and continued walking towards OR2. She walked past Burke's OR and automatically looked through the door window. She stopped dead in her tracks. Christina and Meredith noticed it immediately.
''Dr. Shepherd?'' Christina asked.
''That must be the girl who's holding the bomb.'' Addison said to no one in particular.
Christina and Meredith walked towards the door where Addison was standing. ''Yes, that's Hannah. The young paramedic.'' Meredith elaborated.
Addison looked through the glass and examined the room more. The girl was all alone. ''Dr. Grey, Dr. Yang. Would you be able to explain to me why this young girl is standing there alone?''
Christina and Meredith looked at each other puzzled. Christina was the first to speak ''She's not alone, she's with-'' she stopped midway when she was also looking through the glass and didn't see Dr. Milton anywhere.
Meredith looked through the glass the first time since she had been there and was immediately confused ''Is she squeezing that ambu bag?''
''Where is Dr. Milton?'' Christina finally asked.
Addison didn't wait for a response. The girl was shaking, on both ends. She was probably exerted by pumping that ambu bag for god knows how long. She opened the door so slowly, it creaked. ''Hannah, right?''
Hannah looked up towards Addison. Her face was pale, mascara under her eyes as if she'd been crying, not to mention the excessive shaking. ''I'm Dr. Montgomery-Shepherd. But just call me Addison. Where is the anesthesiologist?''
''He-uhm.'' She took a shaky breath. ''He left.''
Her breath kept shaking and looked down while she mumbled ''He didn't want to die''.
''Hannah'' Addison repeated to get her attention again.
''I think I'm gonna take my hand out now?''
..
There she was, trying to mediate with a nervous 20 year old about how she shouldn't let go of a bomb. This is not something they teach you in medical school. She was trying her best to stay calm and understanding, give the girl some comfort. But how comfortable can you make one feel when they're holding a device that may or may not explode. How can you make someone feel comfortable, when you yourself aren't either.
Addison was now almost as close to the bomb as Hannah and Meredith was right on the other side holding the ambu bag. Christina had screamed for help in the doorway and not short after Preston and Dylan came rushing into the OR. Preston was confused to see Addison there but there was no time to wonder with what Hannah said next.
''I'm just going to take it out now. OK?'' she repeated for the fourth time. This girl was definitely panicking, understandably so.
''You made it almost to the finish line'' Meredith said
''You can do this Hannah.'' Addison added.
''No, no. No, I just want to take it out and be done with it'' She looked at all of them.
Preston tried to do damage control ''Hannah. It won't be much longer. Remember, you're keeping him from bleeding out.''
''No! I am 22 yeards old! I should not even be in here. This is some kind of mistake.'' She cried out.
''She's panicking. We need to clear the room.''
''I'm not leaving.'' Addison and Meredith said simultaneously.
''Grey, Yang. Let's move.''
''I'm not leaving her'' Meredith repeated.
''Meredith, the fewer people in here, the better.'' Addison said.
''Get everyone out now, Dr. Burke'' Dylan said again more sternly now.
''She's an attending but they're my interns. I am responsible for them.''
..
Everyone was talking past and through each other now. Burke was trying to get Christina out of the OR while also complying with what Dylan was expecting of him. Meredith was trying to convince Burke while also keeping an eye on Addison and Hannah. Christina was focused on Meredith and Hannah while also mouthing off to Burke. All the while, Addison kept repeating understanding words towards Hannah.
''Hannah, just stay still for a little longer'' Addison said.
''No, no, no.''
''Hannah, just at me.'' Addison tried again.
''No, it's got to come out. No, no.''
''Hannah, calm down. You need to relax and everything's gonna be fine'' Dylan tried to help. He's the one who is trained for this, right? Not her.
Hannah was to the point of screaming now. All Addison could hear was her screaming no while Burke and Dylan kept trying to encourage her to keep her hand in.
''You keep it there just a little while longer, just until-'' was the last thing Addison heard before she saw Hannah take her hand out of the body.
Everyone ducked.
Expect for Addison and Meredith.
And on whatever stupid instinct Addison reacted on, in that milli-second that went by, she put her own hand in the gaping wound.
Hannah was long gone and Meredith kept staring at Addison ''Dr. Montgomery-Shepherd?''
''What did I do? Oh god.'' Addison said.
Christina was about to move towards Addison and Meredith when Dylan stopped her. Everyone stood dead still.
''Dr. Montgomery-Shepherd.'' Meredith repeated.
''Addison?'' Burke now said.
Addison was nowhere near responding.
