Another week goes by and the school is reopened. All students and faculty are made aware that the basement has yet to be cleaned up. Authorities are still going through the investigation. Because of this, the basement would be blocked off and guarded by security while students still continued their seemingly normal routines. As for Mifuyu, this only threw a wrench in her plan. Whenever she arrives at the school, all of the students surrounding whisper to one another clearly worried for the future, what could be in the basement, and if it's safe to be here. Even the fangirl club that would always greet Kou Mukami at the entrance, wasn't there today. It was off-putting, to say the least.
Her plans were to get into the basement by any means when no one would be around. Even staring down at the hallway to see two police officials stand there guarding it sent slight shivers down her spine. She closes her eyes and looks away, going up the stairs to her homeroom. They must have breaks of some kind so she'd have to keep a close eye on them. Aside from breaking into a crime scene, Mifuyu also needed to find Yui about the tutoring sessions. She wasn't sure why she even agreed to be her tutor instead of literally anybody else that might be slightly better at law than she was...but Mifuyu was grateful for the opportunity. However, there was simply no time. She would think this girl would have a social media of some kind but she was nowhere. At all. The most she found through a quick search was that she was involved with some charity events several years ago when she was very young. Some church and a priest, who she presumed to be her father. A younger Yui greeted Mifuyu when she was trying to find her, smiling gleefully into the camera. Even though just looking at the church in the background made Mifuyu grit her teeth.
She then shook it off and gave up the search for her online now, figuring that she could just tell her in person at school. But to her surprise, she was nowhere to be found. It had only been three weeks since the incident and now she isn't here?
"It could just be a fever. Or somethin' came up. Not everything has to be downright awful, Fuyu.." She mutters to herself and opens her classroom door, eyeing her classmates. Reiji Sakamaki being at the front of the room and students finding their seats. Mifuyu sits down in the back, close to the window, and the bell tolls. When she stands and bows, the adolescent takes her seat and watches Reiji leave the podium and go to his seat. But as soon as she thought to look away as if he knew she was looking at him, his glide over to his right- honing in on the girl.
Mifuyu looks away and opens up her textbook. Reiji blinks tiredly and sits at his desk, doing the same.
'Tch...'
Class rolls along extremely slowly, to the point Mifuyu writes down some plans of action she could do for her own investigation of the basement. She knows she has to get a better grip when going down there. Not to freak out. The first rule of thumb as always with these types of things. All she could really focus on right now was on her notebook, almost completely blocking out whatever chatter was made outside her bubble.
It went from having a plan to her subconsciously doodling the moon that shone in the window. Another clear night with little to no clouds. As per usual. Even the bad dreams she has had something to do with the moon. It would always be red or it wouldn't be there at all. Mifuyu had never dreamt of these sorts of things before. Her dreams would almost always focus on her past. But this time, they were a lot more abstract and less unclear. Her therapist always said that nightmares and dreams would be, at times, difficult to understand and to always write it down if it were to trouble her. Every time she does take this advice, the nightmare is always the same. Her past always seemed to correlate to the moon of some kind. Especially that orphanage. And that girl…
The girl with short hair. Always blending in with the shine of the red moon.
But whenever the moon didn't show up at all, she wasn't there. It would be...someone else. Mifuyu starts to softly drag her pencil up and down her paper, losing her concentration.
"...mi...tomi.."
"Satomi-san."
The pencils broke mid scribble when she slightly jumped at her last name being called from behind, subtle warmth leaving her back. She looks up to see multiple students look at her, teacher included. He then gestures to look back and the ravenette does, to see a student with blonde hair now retracting his finger from her back.
"...Page 246…" Shu says lazily.
Mifuyu raised an eyebrow and quickly caught on, grabbing her book and opening it- to the page he had said. She then stands up and reads the passage, face burning with embarrassment.
…
After a long night of awkward silences and students struggling to strike up a conversation even with fellow friends, school ends as normal around two in the morning. Mifuyu stretches and leans up against her chair, popping her back a bit. All of the students file out of her last class of the day and she is the last one to leave, heading towards the bathroom.
Mifuyu puts her school-bag down and grabs a notebook and pencil out, then puts the school bag in a nearby stall. Everyone was pretty much leaving and she would only be gone for only a few minutes so what was the harm in it? She trots down the second flight of stairs and peers behind a wall. After all, the students had filed out of the building and the sound of limos was long gone, which took a bit too long for Mifuyu's liking, the guards muttered some words that weren't audible and left the entrance of the basement-dwelling. Prolonging her wait of the initiative, the guards walk out of the school building- saying something about taking a quick smoke. Now her chance, Mifuyu carefully leaves the corner of the stairwell and does a small jog toward the basement door. So close, and she can finally-!
"YOU DAMN BRAT!"
It startles Mifuyu so much so it makes her whip around to where she just came from. A shriek shortly followed after that shout. She looks at the basement door and then the stair case she just came from. She shakes her head and stomps her foot in anger.
"God-dammit!"
Mifuyu runs back up the staircase and follows the sound where the shrieking came from until she hears the sound of running footsteps. She thought everyone had left for the night so why-?
All of a sudden someone runs past Mifuyu and hides in the corner by some lockers. She gets on top of the staircase and follows the girl, to find her sitting on the ground- crouching. She had long dark red hair and ocean blue eyes. White glasses framing her face also. She looked frazzled, shocked even.
"Are you okay?" Mifuyu asks, bending down to the student's height. The girl doesn't say anything and suddenly, the sound of a desk being noisily knocked over makes Mifuyu look over her shoulder. The student then grabbed onto her arm to which Mifuyu looked back at the girl.
"Whatever you do, don't leave me alone with him." The stranger hastily whispers and as if on cue, Mifuyu felt a shadow behind her.
"H-Hey...I'm sorry to bother ya, but I got in a little accident with my leg. Could you get a nurse..please?" A boy's voice infiltrates Mifuyu's ears, sickeningly trying to sound innocent and charming.
As the stranger requests for help, her voice hardens. " If you need help that fucking bad, go and find it yourself you— " Mifuyu turns around to stand and is caught off guard.
Ayato Sakamaki.
Standing her ground, she stands over the girl." Move. Or I'll gladly make you move along myself. " Mifuyu growls, crossing both of her arms across her chest. It was just like how it was...where she used to be. Deja vu.
Ayato's smile fades as soon as the human speaks, having heard the red-headed woman's voice from behind the lockers. Surely the human has already been warned in one way or another. She also looks like a stubborn human, and a rather insolent one at that. It will be hard to force her to leave. Oh well, if he's already killing that girl, why not get rid of her human friend too? As long as he doesn't make it messy, there's hardly a chance anyone will find out what happened here. After all, these two would have been the only witnesses.
Ayato straightens up, rearranging his jacket and giving the human a glare, slowly taking a step closer. "You move. This has nothing to do with you, so get away from here and I might forget you got in Your Majesty's way. Otherwise - "
"Your Majesty? Hah! Don't make me laugh. I'm not moving an inch until you leave." Mifuyu interrupts, straightening her posture. Ayato snarls and looks at her in the eye, green clashing with silver. Fighting in a stare-off.
"Excuse me? You should be honored that you're even in my presence, freckles. Once in a lifetime chance! Now get out of my way. That bitch-"
"Freckles?!" Mifuyu exclaims, gritting her teeth. "Oh, that's it. You're gonna get it now, you egotastic freak!"
Ayato was steps closer to Mifuyu, a cold lingering feeling troubles the teenager but she still doesn't step down. The dangerous look in both of their eyes was about to reach a climax once Ayato started to raise his hand to grab the ravenette until-
"That is enough."
A stern voice wafts in the hallway. Mifuyu looks to her side and Ayato looks behind to see his older brother, Reiji with a distasteful look in his eyes. He pushes up his glasses and steps forward to the students, raising his eyebrow.
"What is it do you think you're doing, Ayato?"
"What does it look like?! That girl right there- attacked me!" The vampire sneered, gesturing towards his leg and the student behind Mifuyu. Reiji sighs, shaking his head.
"You can stop with your false allegations. It will only lead you into more trouble."
"Reiji-"
"Enough. Return home at once." His chilling voice silences the third eldest. Ayato purses his lips and turns around, walking past his brother- acting as if his 'injured' leg wasn't even a concern in the first place. Reiji watches him go and then looks down at Mifuyu. While Ayato and her matched similar heights, it wasn't the same here with second-oldest. Having a slightly taller edge to her. Mifuyu raises her head up at him, biting the inside of her lip.
"...Where is the girl that he was talking about?"
"Huh? She's right..." Mifuyu goes to turn around to find that the girl is gone. Did she run away without anybody noticing? How can someone run that quietly-?
"How troublesome. No matter. I will see to it that she gets an apology from my brother. For you as well." Reiji says briskly, folding his arms across his chest. Mifuyu lets her arms drop to her side and then looks at him.
There's a brief pause in exchanging glances. Just as it was in the classroom.
"If there is nothing else to be said, I will take my leave." He says, turning around. When he does, he spots Mifuyu's notebook and pencil on the ground. Raising another eyebrow, he picks them up to which Mifuyu immediately gets in front of him to take it out of his hands.
"It's mine. I dropped it while helping that girl."
He doesn't say anything.
Silence. Again.
"I'm gonna...head home now then. Thanks, I guess." Mifuyu then goes to walk down the hall.
"Satomi-san." He says suddenly and she freezes for a moment, turning around. "I received your letter as thanks for that explosion. I had been meaning to tell you but I could not find the time to do so until now." Mifuyu squints at his statement until she remembers that she did, indeed, leave a letter in his locker since she didn't want to actually conversate with him.
"...Oh, yeah. That's good. I figured it was easier since I'm not good with talking." Mifuyu says albeit always awkwardly. Another stiff silence greets the two as the moon shines in the windows, illuminating their shadows. "I have to get going. I'm sure my aunts are gonna be worried sick." She says quickly and goes to turn away.
"One more thing, may I add?" Reiji speaks once more and Mifuyu looks over her shoulder. The entire atmosphere changed. His eyes said it all. Something about the way he presented himself in the full-moon's gaze. It could be attractive to some. But to Mifuyu? She felt...anxious.
"Do not concern yourself with matters that are not yours."
Her silver eyes fight once again with his shiny yet piercing ruby irises. His chilling yet calm sounding voice almost shatters the very ground underneath Mifuyu's feet. "Thanks for the warning. But I can handle myself. Just. Fine." The confidence was there, but not as strong as it usually was. They stand there, six feet apart from each other until Mifuyu finally turns away, walking down the first flight of stairs. Once she got to the second staircase, she booked it. Running.
'Why am I running? Why is my heart beating so fast? Is this...fear?'
Reiji stood on top of the staircase after she disappeared from his line of sight.
"Impudent, stubborn woman." He growls and turns to face the moon, disappearing in the night.
Mifuyu runs outside of the school grounds and keeps running, completely forgetting about her schoolbag in the bathroom stall. Once she is a good distance away from the school, she stops and places two hands on her knees, trying to catch her breath. His eyes were so cold, no emotion whatsoever. But the aura around him was heavy. Everything felt dense.
She looks up at the starlit sky and continues to walk, holding the notebook and pencil close to her chest.
"...That's just not going to happen, Reiji."
