In the Forbes-Montgomery household certain topics were unspoken of, however medicine was not one of them. The captain used to share cases with his kids, the neurological side of it of course but even the more social aspect of it. So much so, that even when they were doing their residency, Addison was able to keep up with what Derek was telling her most of time and show interest by asking more detailed questions.
Apparently, not only the captain but also Derek noticed that his patients knew when they were going to die. The captain used to say there is some kind of sixth sense, Archer used to always shoot that down because it was too spiritual for his liking and that he was sure there was a scent in the patients room you could recognize. Which in her opinion was also a little spiritual for Archer's taste.
However Derek used to say there was a look in the patients eyes. Derek had always been someone who looks at people. And I mean really looks at them, not just the dreamy eyes kind of way. So his observation didn't surprise her. Either way, you would feel it coming, look or smell and that thought creeped her out. Not in a gruesome kind of way, but because if you knew it was coming, what do you do about it?
Addison had always been someone who liked to plan and organize things, it was one of the few things Bizzy actually passed on to her. Her first day to school, outfits for work, their insurances, itinerary's for travel, divorce papers.. that way she wouldn't face any unnecessary surprises.
But some things you can't plan. Like meeting a blue eyed boy over the cadaver on your first day of the gross anatomy course over the summer or getting pregnant by his best friend while he's of sleeping with other women.
And when she was surprised by two blue lines she was silently reminded, in the same bathroom where she decided to bleach her hair blonde and it didn't react well to red hair dye left in her hair from her last hair appointment, why she hates surprises.
So all in all, it would be better to know death was coming for you, so you can spend your time wisely. Forget about the fact that you're scared out of your mind.
If you knew this was your last day on earth.. how would you want to spend it?
..
Everyone was aware something happened in OR 3, something bad. Word was out that Hannah had left but that had been the end of it. No one else knew what was going on except the chief. The only other people who were painfully aware of the current situation were the people in OR3 itself. However, one place were word hadn't reached yet was OR2.
Dr. Derek Shepherd was still busy with his craniotomy on Dr. Bailey's husband when Dr. Burke came in. He was smart enough not to give any crucial information about what happened in OR3 when Dr. Shepherd asked if Dr. Burke would be able to remove the device from the man's body. He did not answer any questions that Dr. Shepherd did not ask. He hadn't asked where his ex-girlfriend was, he hadn't asked how the paramedic Hannah was holding up and most importantly, he hadn't asked how or where his wife was.
''Gotta say, don't want to be the guy that kills Bailey's husband.'' Derek said.
''Well, I don't want to be the guy that kills us all'' Preston answered back.
In any other situation Derek would've thought Burke was trying to trump him again. However, this time when he looked up, all that he was met with was fear and honesty.
''Dr. Shepherd'' Preston greeted with a nod before leaving.
''Dr. Burke'' Derek barely got out without his voice breaking.
..
''You realize how stupid that was?'' Not something you'd expect from the leader of the bomb squad but are there really lines to be crossed when you're in a room together with someone waiting on bomb that might or might not explode and that same person is velcroing a flak jacket to your boobs.
''It was.'' Meredith agreed.
''incredibly stupid'' Christina.
Addison glared at both of them.
''Ladies, important lesson from an attending to an intern. You know when the timing is off to make fun of someone? When that someone's hand is inside a body that's got a bomb in it.''
''I see you've got a sense of irony'' Dylan said
''Only when things are really ironic'' Addison replied
There was a silence while Dylan finished putting on the flak jacket. Addison kept staring forward.
''I had a feeling'' Addison mumbled.
Meredith was beside her but even she couldn't quite understand what she said. ''What was that?''
''I had a feeling'' Addison repeated.
''huh?'' Dylan said
''Nothing. I just said- I just hate surprises that's all''
''Should've thought about that before you put your hand in there'' Dylan said.
..
Addison kept looking straight forward again until Burke came barging in.
Meredith was already trying to take the ambo bag from Christina when Burke spoke
''Time for you to go''
''There's nothing more you can do here. We've got it covered.'' This is not Dr. Burke stepping in, this is Christina's boyfriend stepping in. He's choosing for her now, because he's more rational then her now. He cares for her, she thought. Derek would've done the same. In New York she thought.
Christina didn't want to stay here because of some cool surgery, like she would get a kick out of this. She wanted to stay here for Meredith. Or better yet, she didn't want Meredith to stay.
''Christina, I cannot do this with you in here. I cannot think'' Addison heard Burke whisper to Christina when she was focused on them again. He's not just choosing for her safety. Her safety being at danger makes him less focused, which in turn will affect them all. Christina had to get out of there.
''We'll be fine'' Meredith said, while taking over the ambo bag. ''It's okay''
''wait'' Everyone looked up at Addison.
''you too Grey'' Addison said.
''What? I- I don't have to go, I can stay.'' Meredith tried to argue
''I know you can Grey, but you shouldn't. There are enough people here for the job''
''Addison is right, Dr. Grey. I'm going to stay here anyway, there is no need for two people holding an ambo bag'' Burke said while stepping beside Meredith to take over.
Hesitantly Meredith transferred it to Burke and stepped aside. Meredith made her way over to the door while Christina whispered to Preston ''You know in the movies how there's always the hero and then there's the other guy. The guy who sees danger and then runs in the opposite direction?''
''Yes.''
''Be the other guy''
Addison kept looking at the strong eye contact between Yang and Burke in awe. She had to try to get rid of the tears by turning her face away from the scene. All the while Christina and Meredith were walking towards the exit. When both Christina and Meredith turned around one last time before leaving Addison blinked her tears away and looked at Meredith.
''Grey'' Addison said.
''I mean, Meredith. Can you-'' Addison tried to sentence together ''I-''
Meredith recognized the look Addison gave her and answered
''You can tell him yourself''
A/N: Due to popular demand I'm back with another chapter. I know I've been awol for a good minute but I just had a lot on my plate lately. I wanted to thank you guys so much for following, liking and commenting (!) on this fic. It really does motivate me more to keep going. I think I have gotten my groove back now. Just had to get into that emotional hole again you know. Cause there are going to be some emotional Addek moments in the next few chapters. Also, I'm thinking of incorporating smut into this but I'm not sure how people feel about it? Obviously I will fit it into the storyline but if people are not keen on the idea, I won't do it and I can keep the rating down I guess. Anyway, sorry for the short chapter but I wanted to end it on a small cliff hanger. Also, let me know what you guys think.. what you're expecting.. I love to hear your thoughts :) p.s. I promise I will update sooner next time.
