"We didn't...know them too well." A girl with long brown hair said, her green eyes flickering back and forth in nervousness. Her sister remained silent most of the time. Looking down at her legs and twiddling her thumbs.
Mifuyu writes this down in her notebook. "So you just went down in the basement for shits and giggles?"
"N-No! It was for a reason but...but we don't remember..." She whimpers and holds her head. "Why are you asking us this? I don't want to-"
"You don't have to. I've gotten all I need." Mifuyu says and snaps her little book shut, sliding the pencil in the spine. "I'll just have to come back and talk to you after this week is over. That's all." She turns around and goes to walk out of the classroom and out of the building before she is caught by any of the security guards.
It was eleven o'clock at night and the moon this time was not in sight. It was one of those new moons, she tried to recall. Only the stars had lit up the sky this time. But a lot more light was shining toward the ground outside where several booths were being set up, preparing for the public to come in soon.
Mifuyu walks towards the booth she was assigned to by the headmaster. There, she spots Yui organizing everything. A small smile stretches across her face.
"Yo, Yui-san. What are you doing?"
Yui yelps and looks up to then sigh in relief, shaking her head. "You startled me, Satomi-san."
"I can see that. You're easy to scare." Mifuyu walks behind the booth and crouches down to her height. "What are you looking for?"
"Y-Your notebook! You had left it after you said you needed to leave. Oh gosh, it has to be here somewhere-"
"You mean this?" Mifuyu tosses up the notebook and catches it. Yui nods and wipes her head with ease.
"That notebook means a lot to you. I thought I lost it..!"
"Nah, that'll always be on me. So don't you worry about it." Mifuyu says and goes to stand, then sits on her chair while Yui finishes up putting away the extra decorations. She then again reaches down and pulls back up a baking pan wrapped in tin foil.
"Y-You made extra? Did mine get sold already?" Mifuyu asks, blinking in surprise.
"Oh, no! Hehe, I had to make extra. Because I know a certain someone would want extra takoyaki." Yui smiles softly which only extends Mifuyu's. After that exchange, the public was now allowed to enter the festival grounds and it quickly became busy. The two girls were selling the aforementioned takoyaki and although Yui's sold a little bit more than Mifuyu's, she wasn't complaining as cooking wasn't exactly her strongest suit. But she had to try. She didn't want to leave Yui with all the hard work. As guests strolled by and out of their booth, they were making quite a bit of money from it.
The night was going a little slow but a lot of other students seemed to be having fun running their own concessions stand and some were even on break, enjoying the festival as the night went along. The air was cool but not entirely freezing. It was adamantly a perfect night.
PLOP!
Both heads whip to their right to see Yuma setting down huge pumpkins. He then harks out a laugh, slapping it a few times. Mifuyu crosses her arms. "You're a couple of hours late, Mukami."
Yuma does a glare. "Hah? These pumpkins had so much trouble getting up from the ground! I already told the Headmaster." The glare then softens and he grins looking back at his creation.
"Homegrown and ready to sell jack-o lanterns! Haha!"
Another boy was beside him. He was the smallest one out of the Mukami's and he actually looked like he was shivering. Yui notices and tilts her head.
"Azusa-kun, do you need a jacket? You look like you're freezing...!"
"Eve...it's okay...I am just nervous...that's all..." Azusa sighs, taking a seat at their own concession stand while Yuma prepares to plop more pumpkins on the counter.
Mifuyu quirks up an eyebrow and moves her arms to place her hands on her hips. "Eve? Why that name?" She looks at Yui and she blushes.
"Oh, a nickname! He thought the name sounded very...erm...what's the word?"
"Angelic?" Mifuyu snorts, joking.
"Yes, actually!" Yui responds, smiling warmly at the raven-haired student to which she blinks a couple of times. Mifuyu shrugs and walks over to Yuma as works. "How is it so convenient that your stand is next to ours? That intentional or can you not stand to be around me?~"
Yuma rolls his eyes. "Awh shaadup. I'm sure you wanna puke after you just said that."
"Heh, yeah. I can already feel the bile coming up."
"It's so the Headmaster can keep an eye on us. To make sure we ain't causin' any trouble. It's so frustrating." Mifuyu then returns to her booth.
"Well might as well listen to the old man. After all, we are here to celebrate aren't we?"
It was a farce statement coming from someone like her but she had to keep up the act so Yui wouldn't worry or Yuma would pry. Even though she had said she had gotten everything she could for now from those sisters, it was a lie. They must have known that and Mifuyu knew that. Regardless of what happened tonight, it'll remain on her mind until she can talk to them again.
Just thinking about it makes her head hurts. She sits down for a second.
Why couldn't they remember? Did they hit their head while getting away from the crime scene? Were they even at the crime scene? They were one of the first witnesses to see the dead corpses down there so they had to have been. In fact, they were the most prominent suspects. They could have been the ones to murder the students but she shakes her head. It was way too obvious. A lot of questions continued to run through her head as the night dragged on.
What would you do, Dad? I feel like I'm stuck...
"Satomi-san...?"
Mifuyu realizes she had been looking down when she goes to look at Yui. She was right in front of her placing a hand on her shoulder. "Are you okay? Are you dehydrated?"
Without really thinking about it she brushes off her hand from her shoulder and goes to stand, almost forgetting she was rather tall compared to her. At least she wasn't in heels. "I just need water. I'll go get some for both of us." She doesn't smile this time and walks past the blonde, not waiting for a response.
"Oi, where are ya goin..?!" Yuma shouts out but Mifuyu ignores him. Yui cradles her hands across her chest and sighs. "I hope I didn't upset her..."
Her feet stomp across the dirt with hands geared up into fists. At least she got away before she could snap at her. She knew she was going to get angry and it was better for her to go somewhere else to cool off instead of just snapping at her. Her head was hurting like crazy as she continued to walk to the nearest booth giving out water bottles.
"Hey-! Watch it!"
"Ow..!"
Mifuyu was running into people by accident but decided not to apologize in fear she might also get angry at complete strangers. Her sneakers smacking against the earth's ground felt louder and louder in her ears. Mild anxiety attacks were a thing she had experienced before. But combined with her anger? She was a bomb waiting to go off.
Finally, she reaches a concession stand giving out the free bottles of water. Mifuyu snatches one without care and opens it quickly, drinking it greedily. She chokes a little and slows down but still drinks the water. Some of the students gave her weird glances but continued on with what they were doing. The ravenette sighs in relief as the water calms her down a little, holding her forehead once again.
Is the stress getting to me? Why do I feel so tired?
"...Mifuyu Satomi?"
She glances her eyes to the left to see the two sisters from before. Mifuyu clears her throat and puts the cap back on the water bottle. Taking a deep breath, she stands up straight. "That's my name. What is it?" Her voice sounded snappy. Irritable.
"We wanted to talk to you in private about what you were looking for..." The youngest sister said. Where was the shyness in their voices? Must have been nervous talking to her alone. Mifuyu grits her teeth and takes both of their hands, yanking them out of earshot of other people.
"What do you mean? I told you I have what I-"
"We have more things to talk to you about." The eldest said, folding her hands behind her back. The youngest perked up. "We were scared before but...we feel confident telling you now!"
Mifuyu sighs and rubs the bridge of her nose. "I guess? I'll listen? I'm sorta pissed off right now so make it quick."
"Follow us." Both of them said and started to walk towards the school building near the back. Her eyes followed them and her head looked side to side. "W-What?! Why do you need to go in there?"
"Please..just follow us." The youngest said, her eyes starting to water. Mifuyu rolls her eyes and begins to follow the siblings to sneak into the building.
Meanwhile, Yuma's drum across the wooden counter as he stares at his pumpkins. Eye twitching in annoyance. "Where did that damn girl go...?" He mumbled to himself. Azusa looks at his older brother.
"Are you...talking about...the girl...with silver eyes...?"
"Yes! She hasn't come back and it's been like...I don't know! Twenty minutes?" Yuma shouts and kicks his concession stand and Azusa does a startling noise. Yui gives the second to last takoyaki stick to a customer and turns to Yuma.
"I'm worried about her too. She seemed really stressed. I wonder what's going on..."
Yuma glares down at his feet. Of course, she couldn't handle this on her own. He already knew he was a hypocrite for lying to Mifuyu about his past. Getting to know him more and all that. But even he was growing impatient with this woman's sense of reason. He wondered if he was worried about a girl he barely knows.
"Yo, chichinashi! Did ya save me some delicious takoyaki?" Ayato suddenly appears, grinning happily down at the smaller female. Yui nods and gives him the last of it, preparing to close down her concession stand. He takes a big bite of one and jumps in glee.
"So good!" Ayato hums happily while taking another bite.
"Ah...actually, Ayato-kun. That's Satomi-san's share. I can't take all the credit." Yui smiles. Ayato's once happy face immediately turned sour as he stared at his favorite food again.
"...Her, huh?" He lowers his voice, gripping the stick tighter in his hand. Ayato does continue to eat it but he isn't as happy as he was, which Yui makes a confused expression.
"Ahh, fuck this! I'm gonna go look for her. Azusa, watch my stand. If the Headmaster comes looking for me, tell him I went to go take a piss!" Yuma then jogs away, leaving Azusa in the middle of his sentence in his head. Ayato stares at him as he runs away.
"What's his problem?"
Mifuyu rounds the corner as the sisters walk in front of her. The school really was creepy with no one there. Some lights were left on as they illuminated the hallways albeit rather dimly as not all of them were on. They had gone upstairs to one of the many floors the school offered. She wasn't sure why they were not going to the basement but she was too agitated to ask.
Then all of a sudden, they stop.
"This should be good. No one should be able to hear us talk..." The eldest spoke softly.
"Alright, this better be good then. What other information do ya have that I need to know?" Mifuyu asks. They turned to face her and just stare. Not saying a word. She doesn't let this go on any longer than it needs to as Mifuyu stomps her foot.
"Speak up! I don't have time to-"
Suddenly, the lights went out. It wasn't complete darkness as there were four beautifully crafted bay windows aligning each other on the left side of the wall. The night sky gives some light in the hallway. Mifuyu steps back and looks up at the ceiling.
"What the fuck..?! Hey, this isn't funny. Let's-"
The wind is knocked right out of her once she's taken to the ground, slamming hard into the tile floor. Mifuyu struggles underneath but her eyes widen once she can't move her arms as easily. Almost being pinned down like an animal. She couldn't move.
"Hey! Let me go!"
"You're in the way..." The youngest was on top of her, keeping a firm grip on her wrists while she feels her lower half being guarded by the other sibling. The student keeps struggling, fighting with every ounce she has.
"And we're hungry..." She heard the eldest say.
"Look if this some kind of fucking prank this isn't funny! Let me go right now or you'll really be sorry!" Mifuyu yells at the two younger girls and they both start to laugh. The youngest leans her head toward the ravenettes, touching foreheads. Mifuyu didn't have enough room to lean back and headbutt her.
"We're so hungry. So please feed us. Won't you, big sister?"
Her head leaves Mifuyu's and she goes toward the nape of her neck. Struggles continue to ensue as she grunts, her breathing starting to quicken. "I said get the fuck off of me!" Mifuyu screams out and immediately hears a hiss come from the youngest sister.
SPLAT!
The weight that was on her entire body had been lifted and she recoiled, scooting back as far as she could. Mifuyu breathes heavily, her face already getting hot with anger. She punches the tile floor and squints into the darkness.
"That wasn't fucking funny. I'm gonna make you regret ever doing that to me you-!"
"Please, sir! We were hungry!"
"So very hungry!"
"Please let us feed!
"We beg of you...please!"
Mifuyu couldn't really see what was happening. It was starting to get darker as time ticked along. She didn't have her phone on her to flash whoever the hell attacked her. It couldn't have been those girls right? Must have been some guy.
"She will not forgive you." A man's voice spoke suddenly which made Mifuyu jerk up in response.
"As I will not."
A crack was heard. Then screaming. Bloody screams of murder echoed through the hallway. Both of them coming from the siblings. Mifuyu stands without a thought in her mind and steps toward the noises. Choking, pleading for air sounding like before their screams disappeared.
Mifuyu just stands there. Frozen in place. "W-What the fuck is going on..!? I can't fucking see..! Whoever planned this whole prank is gonna die!"
"Die? Now that's not how an investigative reporter should talk, right?" The man spoke, suddenly behind her. Mifuyu spins around and jumps backward, tripping over herself and falling to the ground.
"What...?" Mifuyu glares, her heart racing. Adrenaline pumping. Her mind was saying to run. To run as fast as she could but she refused. But...she couldn't stand either. Like a deer in headlights.
A light started to shine but through outside. Mifuyu looks to see the full moon on display, blue and as beautiful as it has been but...the moon was never there in the first place. The sky was clear and the new moon was tonight right? But why-?
"I am really happy to see you, Fuyu-chan."
A strong shiver. A cold chill washes over her entire body. Her heart falling from her chest to her stomach. Mifuyu slowly looks back and sees the face of the person causing all of this. He was wearing all black and propped himself up with a cane that had a golden upside-down cross on the top of it. His eyes glistening with darkened gold and wore no emotion on his face. She then looked behind her to see dried-out corpses of the two siblings before they crumbled to dust.
They were dead. What...?
"Fuyu-chan, do you not remember me?" His soft voice whispers in her ears. "My very best friend."
Mifuyu looks up at him, utter terror in her eyes.
"...Ryouichi?"
He cracks one smile, showing his shining fangs.
