Chapter 23: Myth X Legend X History
The lecture given by Iruka was interesting, but now, they were in the most boring class, History.
Personally, for Izuku, he didn't understand why his classmates were so annoyed. If you just looked past the dates, History was fun! The teacher obviously seemed to know this as well as she mixed it up.
She started with an introduction, "Hello, I'm Nico Robin, your history teacher," she said warmly, but received exasperated Hellos in response.
Robin chuckled, "There's no need to be so irritated. I promise I'll make it fun," Robin assured.
"Yeah right," Shisui muttered beside Izuku, "It's those teachers that turn out to be the worst,"
Izuku was sure Robin had heard Shisui considering the way her ears twitched but there were no repercussions, "Now, today you won't need any books. We'll start with something interesting, quirks!' Robin announced.
"But isn't this history class?" A confused student asked.
"There is such a thing called quirk History. People didn't always have quirks, you know?" Robin asked.
The class nodded and someone asked, "But why do we need to do it again? Our parents already told us the history of how quirks emerged,"
"Yes. I was just using it as an example," Robin replied, "You see, most people thought that story is a myth. A couple of decades back, a group of propagandists refuted that people were once quirkless,"
"Why?"
"To maintain the belief that quirks were all-powerful," Robin replied.
"Who'd do something like that?" Izuku interrupted.
"A group called the Meta Liberation Army, but we'll discuss them later in class," Robin responded, "Anyway, these myths were only quelled after archaeological sites proved it,"
"What does this have to do with us?" Someone asked, losing their patience.
Robin smiled, "Myth and History are often related. It's just the requirement of evidence that separates the two. As an archaeologist, I have researched into the origin of several myths and have even managed to correlate them with actual incidents. And that is why we will be discussing a widely debated quirk Legend today,"
"Wait, you aren't a police officer like the other teachers?" Izuku asked.
"No, I agreed to teach upon a special request from one Hisashi Midoriya, your father," Robin stared at Izuku.
"Dad requested you?" Izuku asked. It was nothing to be surprised of, it was just that he hand never mentioned her.
Robin nodded, "I was once kidnapped by a criminal gang because I was the only one who could read a certain ancient text. Your father is the one who saved me, so I'm returning the favor," Robin told Izuku who looked to be in awe. He knew his father was badass, but he couldn't help but feel amazed every time he learned of something else he did.
"Whoa Izuku, what exactly does your father do in the police?" Shisui asked.
"That can be discussed later," Robin cut off the discussion, knowing it would be harmful if Hisashi's undercover persona was somehow leaked,
"Now let's talk about this myth," Robin clapped her hands to bring attention back to her, "This quirk doesn't have a name, but its power is said to be capable of stealing other people's quirks and transferring them to someone else. A quirk that can steal quirks and give them to others as well," Robin's tone turned darker as she grew more serious, "It was said to be the quirk that led the world into the post-quirk apocalypse,"
This got everyone's attention. The subject of the post-quirk apocalypse was never very well documented and the kids always wanted to study that part because it was mysterious.
Robin chuckled seeing their enthusiasm, "As you know the post-quirk apocalypse lasted well over centuries. There are some bits of recorded history but when you put them together, it's evident there has been an attempt to tamper with the history. Most historians call it the void century. It's also my primary field of work and my dream to find out what actually happened."
"Tell us about the quirk!" a student yelled impatiently.
"Yes of course," Robin replied, "This quirk could steal other quirks. This could make the user strong enough to wage war against all the nations of the world. By gifting quirks to others, he could build an army that could lay waste to everything. It would be the perfect quirk to start the apocalypse,"
Shisui shivered, "That's an overpowered quirk,"
"It is. That's why people were scared of him. Those who were good opposed him but were killed shortly after. A civil war of sorts broke out and that's all I know. The later part of the history uncovered introduces the Yakuza and the Meta Liberation Army. All traces of this quirk vanished except one," Robin stopped for dramatic effect.
"What trace?" Izuku gulped as he asked.
"The user was said to have a brother. Not much is known about him, but he was the only one who could oppose him without getting killed. Whether this was out of brotherly love or because he had a strong opposing quirk remains to be seen,"
"I doubt brotherly love stays after you massacre so many people," Tenten said darkly.
Izuku was deep in thought. He felt some of the stuff had major discrepancies, "Sensei, is it possible that this quirk user died during the void century? And that's how the Liberation army and Yakuza came into play?"
"It could be, but such a powerful figure does not just disappear. There's also the possibility that he stole a quirk for longevity which could make your statement false," Robin explained.
"So that person might still be alive!?" Shisui asked, panicking.
Robin didn't ease his tensions and nodded. Shisui turned pale.
"Wait, but it doesn't make sense. How could someone steal quirks and give them? They are opposing powers!" Izuku exclaimed.
"Go on," Robin told him, interested in what he had to say.
"What if the reason he put up with the brother is that he had the other quirk. Maybe this guy could steal the quirks and he needed his brother to transfer them. Maybe the brother was a medium between the OP quirk guy and the guy who'd receive the quirk?"" Izuku asked.
Robin was speechless. She had never thought of it that way. It fixed some of the discrepancies in the story, even if not all. Of course, it could be that the man had also stolen a quirk that lets him give quirks but it seems unlikely someone would have a quirk that only gives quirks when they would have no separate power to give.
However, while Robin was thinking deeply about what Izuku said, the rest of the class were confused, "My brain hurts!" Shisui groaned, "You went too many this quirk, that quirk, don't they have a name?"
"No, they don't," Robin answered.
"Then let's name them. I'm getting a headache keeping track of this conversation," Shisui fumed.
"You could if you want," Robin admitted after some thinking.
Izuku hummed, "Well it's a quirk that takes other people's quirk, right?"
"Right,"
"A quirk that lets one person take eveything. So lets call it everything for one!" Shisui hummed.
"I was thinking of All for One," Izuku rectified.
"That's pretty catchy," Izuku's classmates agreed, "Yeah, lets go with All for One,"
"Fine! But what about the other one. The one that gives quirks?" Shisui asked.
"All for All!" Izuku replied enthusiastically.
Shisui nodded enthusiastically too, clearly liking the name but many grunted, "All for All? That sounds weird," Tenten said.
"Yeah. It sounds like everyone has the quirk to take other quirks," Someone else mentioned.
"What do you propose then?" Izuku asked his classmates.
"It does the opposite of All for one right? So, let's just switch the words, One for All," Itachi proposed.
"That doesn't sound anything like what the quirk does," Izuku protested, "It makes it sound like only one quirk is being given. Any quirk can be given, remember!?"
"I like it though. It's catchier," Shisui ignored Izuku, "Let's go with One for All,"
"Yeah," the class shouted in agreement.
"Fine," Izuku sulked.
"So, One for All is All for One's brother and the two of them are working together?" Tenten asked for clarification. Izuku nodded in response.
"Oh, so we're calling them by their quirks?" Shisui asked.
"We don't know their names, idiot," Itachi said quietly.
"All for One, and One for All… I like the names," Robin eye-smiled.
Izuku smiled in embarrassment at the praise. He was about to ask something when he stopped dead in his tracks. His smile vanished and he looked up at Robin, "Sensei…"
"Yes?" Robin asked slowly, confused at Izuku's certain change in tone.
"Why are you agreeing with us? Didn't you say it's a myth? Not history?" Izuku asked.
Robin blinked a few times before laughing, "You really are like your father, not missing a thing," she praised. Izuku went red at the praise but continued his questioning, "Well?"
"Remember how I told you that I was kidnapped by an organization for reading the ancient text?"
"Yeah,"
"It was there where I found the legend of this quirk… All for One as you have named it. It was a breakthrough into the history of the void century but when Hisashi came with Interpol to rescue me, they were confiscated. The artifacts were to be transported to Japan for digital investigation but the convoy was attacked and the artifacts are lost. I didn't have evidence to support my claims, so not many people took me seriously. But, before my disappearance, I was a renowned Historian, so few believe me," Robin explained.
She clenched her fists tightly in anger, "I'm positive the texts still exist. If only I could find them…"
The class became quiet at the revelation. Izuku hesitantly asked, "So, this legend is actually true? We just need to find the evidence?"
Robin nodded slowly, "It will be hard. Especially because some parties are trying their best to keep it hidden,"
"We'll still find it!" Shisui said with confidence. The class roared in approval.
As the bell rang, Robin nodded, "I hope you do. Goodbye for today," she dismissed the class.
As the rest of the students exited, Izuku thought, "Who else would know about this legend? Who would be so knowledgeable?"
Izuku's eyes shot wide, "Nedzu! He is super smart. He'll probably have heard about the legend!"
Izuku resolved to ask Nedzu and Aizawa in their next class, the legend of All for One and One for All!
A/N: IMPORTANT NOTE
This fanfic will be going on a HIATUS until FEBRUARY 2022 due to my upcoming exams in January. I know my update schedule before this wasn't exactly good, but I promise to make it up later. The chapters earlier were short before, because I didn't have enough time to write but wanted the story to progress as well. After the hiatus, you will be seeing more of Izuku as an actual police officer and the lessons will be more scattered and conjoined into one chapter instead of separate chapters.
So, yeah, I'll see you guys after my exams. Best of luck to you guys too. :)
