Reunited with the Sonic Screwdriver outfitted with the tracker, Theodore's on his way, tracking Annika through the city, to the tune of sirens from police vehicles and ambulances due to their incident with the tyrants.
Having faith in Lila and Al, Theodore pushed on with the light shining on the Sonic Screwdriver, showing him where he needed to go, and it led him towards a building, look no different than any of the buildings he passed, but Theodore followed the directions as he went.
With the use of the psychic paper, Theodore escaped detection, and followed the Sonic Screwdriver up to the rooftop via the winding staircases.
On his mind, he went over how he wanted to deal with Annika, while he wanted to know how she escape death at his hands, he's more interested on how to quietly deal with her without someone noticing she hadn't come down the rooftop.
Wouldn't be surprised if she has a few traps, being at the rooftop, though her on the rooftop's suspicious, considering everyone and their mother knows how dangerous it is being up there.
Arriving at the rooftop, Theodore exhaled sharply, looking ahead as he sees someone on the rooftop.
Closing the door behind him, Theodore started walking towards the person, as he gotten closer, he sees it wasn't who he thought it was.
Seeing the man with his back turned ahead of him, Theodore's eyes narrowed as he stared, as he heard the man say, "I once told you, I'd kill you if I ever see you, again."
Scoffing, Theodore retorts with a dry, "Do you know how little that narrows it down?"
The man sharply turned around to face him and immediately, Theodore recognized who it was, it took time for his brain to react, but he uttered, "You!"
It's Jimmy Crane!
No mistaking it from the gaunt face.
Gaunt!
Like a skeleton!
Seeing him again after all this time, Theodore's amazed, amazed how a man who spent much of his time drunk or in a drug fueled daze somehow survived long enough to his hundreds, yet look no older than when Theodore and Lila saw him last.
Not saying much considering what else Jimmy did during his time as the crime boss, yet here he was, still raspy voiced and all, a miracle, really.
"How on earth could you have survived much less not rotting in a prison cell?" Theodore showed no courtesy for a man who deserved every karma thrown at him for his actions.
Coming towards him, Theodore sees the ire in Jimmy's blue eyes as he informed him, "You can thank the bitch for that!"
Theodore thought he meant Annika, but as it turned out, Annika wasn't responsible for this walking tragedy, someone unexpected.
Kira!
"What did she do?" Theodore's curious what transpired since he and Lila departed from the time and Jimmy told him, within a few weeks, things were fine, fine a loose term for someone like Jimmy, but he said things started changing with Kira.
Jimmy didn't notice or cared to notice and he's aware it bit him on the arse, but the point stands, something changed with Kira, and she kidnapped him.
Hid him in a basement somewhere, started injecting him with unknown liquids that she concocted, the only reason he survived's a miracle unto itself, and he only escaped because of events that followed afterwards.
"She experimented on you?" Theodore's shocked that Kira suddenly went from the seemingly noble giant to as similar as Annika and Jimmy replied bitterly that he should've saw it coming, but Kira used everything against him that he didn't see it coming.
Baffled, Theodore responded with, "Why would she experiment on you?"
He saw the scowl coming from Jimmy as he stopped in his spot, eyes focused on him, before he heard, "Fuck if I know! She experimented on me, jabbed me with every syringe under the sun. It's a miracle she didn't kill me!"
Not that the world would weep if Jimmy didn't survive these experiments, but that's just Theodore's private thoughts.
Something changed in Kira and she gotten the desire to experiment, just like Annika, and it concerned Theodore as he tried to keep Jimmy focused on his tale, hoping to buy time for Lila and Al.
Jimmy deserved everything, including the kitchen sink, but the fact that Kira did this, it's bothersome, despite Theodore's opinions on Jimmy.
"What happened to Kira?" Theodore wanted to know what happened to her, causing Jimmy to snarl as he recalled what happened to her with disdain in his blue eyes as he tells Theodore.
When he was in the basement, tied down, Kira injecting him with the last of the concoctions, he heard a man somewhere in the shadows, didn't know how he got down here, and he wasn't anyone on the list of associates.
Kira noticed him immediately and only stopped in her spot when the man said something to her, don't know what, Jimmy was out of his gourd when Kira experimented on him, it was a miracle he remembered anything, at all.
Groggily, Jimmy sees the silhouette of a tall man, about as tall as him and Theodore, slender, a perfectly trimmed beard, with eyes that stared into Jimmy's eyes.
"Just as she taught you," said the strange man, his voice, Jimmy didn't know anyone with that accent, he'd remember it. "You improved where she failed."
However, the fact of the matter's that the man's responsible for what Annika did to Kira and Kira did to him and believe Jimmy, once he got out of the restraints, he had everyone on his payroll look for the damned man, to get revenge on him, but he never turned up after that.
Anyway, the man's talking to Kira, Kira's listening to him, and the man wanted something from Kira, some book that Jimmy didn't know she had, and Kira grabbed it for him.
Still couldn't see the man, but he's ruffling through the book, impressed at Annika's handiwork, before telling Kira, "It was fun, seeing how my work brought back an extinct species, but I believe, you were doomed, from the start."
Don't know what happened afterwards, Jimmy blacked out, when he came to, he found Kira dead on the ground, the man and the book gone, the lab of hers ransacked, picked clean, from even the used syringes.
No lingering traces of what transpired and with Kira dead, everything she knew went with her.
Broke free from the restraints with enough tries and Jimmy went on to scour for that man, but he never turned up, Kira's buried somewhere or another, Jimmy didn't care because of what she done to him, but Theodore retorted that Jimmy wasn't any better, only for him to scowl at him.
"What did she do to me?" Jimmy wanted answers from Theodore, expecting him to tell every known thing that came to mind what happened while Jimmy was restrained, and Theodore said simply, "Noticed anything off since then?"
Scoffing at him, Jimmy says that he became stronger, which isn't a bad thing with Jimmy, but something changed within him, and he hated it, so much, he did all this just to get Theodore back here to force his help.
"Would it be in relation to Thing One and Thing Two?" Theodore inquired if the reasoning for this's because of the man and woman that've attempted him and Lila harm more than once and Jimmy confirmed that his urges gotten unbearable to the point he had people in his gang bring him strangers off the streets.
Wouldn't know the first thing about science, but for some strange reason, Jimmy had the drive to experiment himself on these strangers, injecting them with concoctions made with his own blood!
For no discernible reason, but problems arose when every subject brought to him died from the experiments, to the point that it brought undue heat from the authorities, and everyone in his gang turned on him, having enough of his depravity.
"I just… I just couldn't stop," Jimmy bitterly described the sensation, the panic attacks, from being unable to experiment, but every time he tried, none of the people he had kidnapped survived.
Gotten to the point he had to go underground, change his name, become a myth, but continued his insatiable desire, until a strange event occurred.
That man, the man he saw before when Kira had him strapped to the table, he'd return, seemed pleased for some reason, and although Jimmy wanted to kill him, something in him prevented it.
He handed over sparse papers from Kira's book, ordering Jimmy to follow her notes on the next set of experiments, and see what happens, then.
Gone as quickly as he arrived, Jimmy didn't have enough to process it, much less what the man looked like, but he had the papers in his hand, and his drive forced him to kidnap another set of people, as the man said he would.
Following Kira's notes, Jimmy suffered setbacks, with much of the people dying from horrifying reactions, until finally, the last two of the batch miraculously survived, despite everything done to them.
The man and woman.
They survived and since, it gave him satisfaction, but something's different with them, something he couldn't understand.
He instinctively knew they were like him, but they weren't.
Worse's that no matter how much he loathed them, if they so much as gotten hurt when he sent them on missions, it just made him irate, not because of their injuries, because they were injured!
He didn't even know why the man came back to give him notes, but he did, and when Jimmy went looking for them, they went missing from his desk, now he didn't have proof of the notes, except the man and woman.
"Why stop at two?" Theodore inquired why Jimmy didn't continue his experiments and he was told that Jimmy saw no point continuing with his experiments, he'd experimented enough that if he tried again, someone would've found out.
This world's digital, now, not as the analogues of yore, anything Jimmy does's easily seen on cameras and cellphones.
Couldn't trust anyone to be his assistant, either, schmuck that was, letting their conversations be overheard by some stooge mopping for a living.
"This man, do you remember anything about him, something that stuck out with you?" Theodore tried to keep Jimmy on his rants and Jimmy delivered with him describing the man in the darkened corners of his office, but he remembered those eyes.
Hearing this, Theodore wanted to know how Jimmy knew about his TARDIS and how to disable it, which Jimmy dryly told him that the man he encountered had scribbles on the notes, and he followed them.
The man he spoken with's familiar with the TARDIS, didn't care to ask him how, and Theodore demanded more answers from Jimmy.
Jimmy's unable to tell him more, because they're interrupted by the appearance of Lila, rushing up from staircase leading up to the rooftop, exhausted.
Sweat dripped from her matted chestnut hair as she's coughing, "This is what I get for eating those fries!"
Curse those saturated deliciousness that make weight watchers weep!
She briefly recovered from running for an extended period, before seeing Theodore, and once her chestnut eyes moved towards Jimmy, her mouth dropped.
Internally, she screamed, "Not that Irish prick!"
Externally, she instead sputtered, "Oh, crap, you?"
Jimmy instantly remembered her, pointing at her, hate dripped from his words as he hissed at her, "You!"
Theodore quickly pulled Lila behind him as he kept her away from Jimmy, who reached his tipping point by reaching for his revolver that he hid in his coat.
"Where are they?" Jimmy demanded answers on what became of the man and woman that were meant to bring Theodore to him, Lila struggled but she managed to answer his question with, "I don't know, last I saw, one had a fall and the other's making friends with the power lines!"
Wasn't the answer he wanted, but it was the truth, and he grew irate with the two as he gnashed teeth at them, demanding Theodore cure him.
Which, while the role of the Doctor had them help others in their time of need, some didn't deserve no more than a hand wave, but in this time, they're looking down at the barrel of an angry former Irish crime boss that's been experimented on by his former subordinate.
The gun pointed at them, Jimmy started panicking, something unusual coming from him, that it caught Lila off-guard before Theodore summed what he deduced.
Jimmy was turned into a tyrant by Kira, having become influenced by the experiments done by the late Annika, continuing her work from beyond the grave, and without Kira to speak for herself, they only have Jimmy's words.
"But I thought…" Lila's disheartened by the thought that despite her attempts, Kira fell into the same rabbit hole as Annika, doing the same things she done, it couldn't happen to a better man than Jimmy, but it didn't ease the tension she felt as Jimmy kept them where he wanted with his revolver.
Theodore tells Jimmy that he couldn't cure him without the notes, which without, he can't think of anything that might've helped the bedeviled man, not that he wanted to, anyway.
Even if he had the notes, he wasn't sure if he'd be able to cure Jimmy of his mutations without risking killing him, purposely or not.
The panic worsened, Jimmy's uncontrollable eyes darted around as he moved jaggedly, looking for the man and the woman, a strange spell come over him, fear, fear for them, people he wouldn't know from a hole in the ground, and here he was, panicked.
"What did you do?" Jimmy demanded to know what became of them before Lila finally spelled it out to him.
The man was crushed inside a garbage truck that he accidentally flew into when Lila drove into the back of another truck trying to dislodge him from the roof of the stolen car and the woman hung by the live wires that hung low on a side street, wrapped around her neck tightly, and electrocuted to the point smoke rose from her burnt skin.
They were deader than Dillinger at that point, Al said it as much, analyzing their vitals to be sure that they weren't coming back to cause more problems.
Hearing this, made things worse as Jimmy grew distressed at the news that the man and woman were dead, his work undone, and the pain inside him worsened with every breath he took, as he's unable to shake it off.
Pointing his gun at him, Jimmy held his finger around the trigger as he's prepared to shoot Theodore, scowling as he uttered, "I should've killed you when I had the chance!"
Prepared to fire, Jimmy's stopped when a crane from a nearby construction site close to the building suddenly slammed into his side, enough force to send him flying, dropped his gun instantly, as he disappeared.
Recovering from the shock, Theodore ran ahead, looking to the side of the building where Jimmy would've fallen, and when he looked down, he found Jimmy lying dead at the bottom of the building, to the shock of people in the area, head slammed against a decorative stone, gravity and force did the rest.
Theodore didn't need Al to tell him, Jimmy's dead. From where he stood, Theodore can see the crushed head, like an egg, and the 'yolk' running out.
The screams of terror as onlookers see the body, Theodore turned away, and rejoined the shocked Lila.
"I thought… I thought…" Lila's in disbelief, hoping that Kira followed through with her advice, and left Jimmy, going her own way, living a happier life than working with someone like Jimmy.
Theodore comforted her, before he escaped with her through a rift made, avoiding contact as police cruisers started making their way to the scene.
Upon arriving back at the TARDIS waiting for them where they originally arrived the day before, Al's waiting for them, and when they talked to him, they learnt it wasn't his doing.
"I stayed back because I thought I picked up another one of those disablers," Al informed Theodore of his reasoning.
Popped up when he searched for Theodore, didn't want to risk it, so he sent Lila ahead on his behalf, prepared to risk himself if needed.
"It's gone now, but it was there," Al swore that the disabler was on his scanner, but as it showed up, it disappeared, now he isn't sure where it went.
Sighing, Theodore says for Al to work on subverting it with the samples for the next time and Al agreed, disappearing, leaving Theodore and Lila to talk.
"Are you okay?" Theodore held her shoulders as she barely moved her stiff chestnut hair from her face as she gestured as she told him, "Could use a shower and some heating pads."
Nodding, Theodore brought her close, hugging her tightly, and she hugged him back.
"Why?" Lila bitterly wondered why Kira would do the things she did.
Jimmy deserved it, but Kira deserved better than that, and Theodore couldn't answer her question, so instead he comforts her, saying that she did her best, it was Kira's decision at the end of it, and she chose this.
"We can't change everything we don't like," Theodore gently touched her nose, causing her to utter, "You sound like Hamon!"
Releasing her, Theodore tells her that they'll have a layover, so Lila can relax, and when she recovers, the first thing before they return home's getting something to eat.
Theodore thinks they earnt it and Lila agreed with him.
"If it wasn't Al, then, how'd that crane hit him?" Lila shifted topics as Theodore opened the door into the TARDIS.
Turning his head briefly, Theodore answers that he isn't sure, for now, they needed rest and food.
Questions can be had when they recovered.
Slowly nodding, Lila joined him inside the TARDIS and it slowly disappeared.
Poking his head around the corner, a curious man tilts his head, his dull expression, it's the janitor from the B&B building.
His cellphone started ringing and when he answered, he heard someone on the other end of the phone, before he answered with a dull, "As you said, the machine wouldn't let the protos survive. It's aware of the tricks, now. And, I dealt with him as you commanded. His and their remains are being disposed of as you wished. No, never suspected. I don't think the general told him a thing. What are my orders, now?"
THE END
