Stuck in the cells with no phone call, no representation, or any means of pleading their cases, Lila and Catherine spent much of the time discussing things that they're able to reasonably discuss, since they couldn't convince a soldier to lend them a packet of playing cards to stave off the boredom of being in the cells.
Since they didn't pose much of a risk, they had some leeway being able to speak freely, since the soldiers don't bother hanging around them much, guess two hens clucking at each other were better than two women arguing about something that came to mind.
"I'm sure they already know, by now," Lila summed that it shouldn't take long for Ianto to inform Torchwood about the familial connection, but Catherine had a different take on the whole thing, telling Lila that if Ianto had gone straight to the director, why haven't they come for her, yet?
If the director sees this as a chance of coming back on them in some way, she'd have to cut Lila's father from Torchwood and have Lila escorted off the premises, wouldn't make sense keeping her otherwise.
"I know Teddi, they're probably going to grill my ass until they get grilled cheese, at this point," Lila summed that she's expecting them to drag her out of the cell and into an interrogation room, hoping to get everything they can from her, and then some.
Worse's that because of her father being part of Torchwood, she'll have that to contend with, too.
Shrugging her shoulders, Catherine pointed out that they haven't come for her, yet, and she knows David.
"With your legendary temper, I don't think they want to take that chance," Lila quipped much to Catherine's chagrin, before they're left to contemplate their navels, there's nothing else for them to do.
Catherine found it a strange idiom, contemplating her navel, who thought that was a good idiom?
Lila had no comment.
When the soldiers weren't guarding them, Catherine asked what Theodore and in extension, David, planned on doing to get them out of this, since Lila had an easier time communicating with Theodore, and she responded that he hadn't gotten back to her.
"Oh! I hate this!" Catherine grew irritated waiting for something to happen, if not for the fact that the soldiers confiscated her things, she would've gotten out of the cell, and well, she wouldn't know what to do, but it's better waiting around!
Sitting on the end of the bed in her cell, which stopped feeling like a bed after a while, now that she felt the grated metal bottom as the mattress pad wasn't as comfortable, Lila sighed, "Judoon don't give us lunch and let us take bathroom breaks."
Her vibrant reddish hair bobbing as she nods, Catherine admitted that Lila had a point, but the Judoon wouldn't waste time with them here, they'd be on them for every nougat of information under the sun whist threatening to kill them.
"Pip-pip! Cheerio!" Catherine heard a man cheerfully say as he entered the holding cell pushing a cart through the doorway.
Immediately, Lila recognized him, "Mr. Pratchett?"
Catching up to her, Catherine's shocked at the sight of the man as he pulled down his sunglasses looking between the women with a curvy smile as he greeted the women.
Shocked, Catherine goes, "Why're you here?"
Lila added, "And how are you here, Mr. Petty?"
Smiling as he caught that, Pete tells her how she had a point, that while he didn't miss everything, he did miss his time as the Doctor, and the situation was a good way of him making a temporary comeback.
"They have a lot to learn," Pete commented on Theodore and David, they have potential, but they have much to learn being the Doctor, as he folded up his sunglasses, looking between the women.
Like he told the boys, er, Theodore and David, he simply got through the doors without anyone looking at him twice.
"Smooth!" Lila complimented Pete's ability to get through security without anyone from Torchwood catching on that he's one of the Doctors, but Pete's answer why that is, dampened the mood.
A frown appeared on his face, Pete tells her and Catherine that he has reasons to believe that there's Cybermen present, that's how he's able to circumvent much of the security, that they weren't focused on dealing with humans, at least not yet, anyway.
Showing them his sunglasses, Pete tells them that he's been looking for people being used as human drones for the Cybermen.
Looks like a standard pair of aviator sunglasses, hell, Lila's father has a pair like them, but they looked innocent enough that nobody's the wiser if they were to see them, Pete had them made by a nice woman during his old adventuring days.
He never bothered to get rid of it when he retired to raise Jenny, figured that a time like this was bound to happen, Cybermen don't have schedules when they invade a universe, but it didn't mean he couldn't be prepared, perhaps a part of him wanted to relieve the glory days.
All he needed to do's wear the sunglasses and he'll instantly see which person he's speaking with's become a brain-dead drone to the Cybermen, they've been getting more sophisticated when they apprehend victims as of late, not surprising, but difficult all the same.
"What's your findings?" Lila asked him and Pete said that he already cleared several people in Torchwood already, the Cybermen are craftier than they were when he fought against them, it's almost amazing as it's scary.
Still, despite Cybermen advancing in their upgrades since then, Pete knows they're prone to carrying over some flaws of theirs they haven't upgraded away.
So far, Pete's managed to narrow now one individual affected by the Cybermen, they wouldn't want people to get suspicious had they taken more people, and Pete thinks it's the reason why they haven't done anything with the lot, yet.
If they make it known, their operations are doomed, and only the Doctor would see through it, if he knew what he was looking for.
And.
Again, they're Cybermen, not clever spies.
"It could be anyone!" Catherine noted that unless Pete's capable of sneaking around the entire building, speaking with every person, he won't know who was the one that'd been converted by the Cybermen, causing Pete to tell her that he's accounted for everything, the only personnel that might've been used by the Cybermen would be wearing something innocuous.
Something that nobody would think twice about when interacting with the individual whose already brain dead and used as means to an end.
When questioned, Pete described his tenure, and how it correlated to what he knows, now, that the Cybermen knew better drawing attention to themselves.
With the Daleks, they'll be careful in their choices, making less obvious of their presence, hence why Pete's been carefully looking for people wearing earpieces.
"Earpieces?" Lila raised her brow at this before Pete tells her that it's the most mundane innocuous thing a Cyberman could hope for when plotting an invasion.
Rising usage of earpieces throughout the years's a dream for the Cybermen, like a gift that landed on their metal laps, that they incorporated the design for their uses.
It's quite the perfect design to hide the tubular going from the device to the brain, feeding the drone information the Cybermen sends over the air.
Harkening back to what her father said during their argument earlier, Lila goes, "You think they might be somewhere in Torchwood?"
Like Pete said, they'd want to hide themselves somewhere that nobody thinks to check, and they can retrofit whatever Torchwood has to further upgrade, mask themselves better. The
As he nods, his blond hair stiffly moving, Pete tells her, "It's a good way to hide, my dear."
Knowing that they'll be searched for by both Daleks and Torchwood, it's a good idea by the Cybermen to hide under their noses, until they're ready to make their move.
Leading Lila to say, "How about a director, would that work?"
Thinking it over, Pete nods as he says he hadn't been able to get close to her, if he tried, he'll be found out, but if the Cybermen wanted control over Torchwood, taking the director's a good way doing just that.
How they managed to convert Director Harriet without Torchwood noticing, well, if they're clever, giving Torchwood details on Cybermen, and gleaming what they made to counter them's a good way of staying off their radar.
Frantically gesturing, Catherine quickly says, "Well, what the hell are we doing here, get us out, Pops!"
Quickly, Pete put on his sunglasses before reaching into the cart, bringing out a…
Well, duh, of course he would have one, himself!
Holding it close to the cell door into Lila's cell, Pete opened it with ease, the green hue of his Sonic Screwdriver wavering like waves as he then proceeded to open Catherine's.
Another thing he kept from his old life, Pete wanted a memento, and decided on keeping the tool that saved his life over the years he adventured.
Shining under the light, the eggshell white metal tubular shell, no wider than a thick marker, no longer than a pencil, with three thin silver rings accenting towards the top, with a red attachment that glows green when in use, the Sonic Screwdriver stayed with Pete from the day he found it to the day he retired, and it still worked despite him haven't kept it hidden away after all these years.
In addition, it's been modified, so, even though it's not as bright or as flashy, it will do just fine.
Freed from their confinements, Catherine and Lila watched as Pete went through the cart he pushed, retrieving the things he took from storage after speaking with Theodore and David.
No reason pushing the cart around, anymore.
Handing the respected Sonic Screwdriver to Catherine and Lila, Pete sighed, "It's just too easy!"
Amazed that he stole back the Sonic Screwdrivers, Lila asked how he did it, and Pete tells her that he simply waited for the clerk to go on lunch, the aroma of a tasty roast got to him.
Anyway, off they go!
Confident, Pete moved effortlessly, with Catherine and Lila following him closely, despite him being out of practice, Pete's falling back into the swing of things, and reliving his younger years, all over, again.
His body moves swiftly as his eyes scanned the area, searching for any sign of the Cybermen or any sort of threat.
After a short while of sneaking, Pete stopped in front of one of the containment cell blocks that held Theodore and David.
Before he forgets, Pete opted to tell Lila that Theodore won't be in the containment cell block with David, when asked why, he told her.
"Theodore's with your father," Pete informed Lila, much to her surprise, before Pete explained that Al got in touch with him, and he helped the AI work the angle that Lila's father was the only person that could fix the TARDIS.
A gamble, to be sure, shame to waste all that detergent, but it worked out, and if his intuition meant anything, Pete's sure that Theodore and Lila's father are working together with Al to break the lock on both versions of the TARDIS.
It came as a surprise to Lila hearing how her father's working with Theodore, despite his reservations with him, but Pete tells her that he sowed some seeds of doubt that her father had already, enough to where he's willing to trust Theodore to some degree, but cautioned it won't mean that he'll come to trust Theodore, there's some things that even Pete couldn't do, and that's one of them.
Entering the containment cell block, the three see David, sitting Indian style on the bed, his eyes intensely staring at the lock of his electrified cell.
He broke concentration upon seeing the three walking towards his cell, Lila asking him in a joking matter if he's trying to use his telepathic mind to break the electrified cell lock, and to her surprise, David insisted that he can do it if he had enough time.
"It doesn't work like that," Pete nixed the thought of David developing the ability to concentrate on locks and destroying them with his mind, causing David to question how Pete knew, but the sharp look on Pete's face caused him to settle.
Using his Sonic Screwdriver and disabling the electrified cage, Pete watched as David jumped up from the uncomfortable bed, going towards the disabled cell door, and opened it with ease.
Freed from his imprisonment, David remarked, "It's been too long since I've been free!"
Jabbing him with her finger, Catherine hissed at him, "You big idiot, it's only been three hours!"
Recoiling, David balked how Catherine knew how long they've been stuck, before she showed him her wristwatch.
Ever since she's been traveling with him, Catherine's kept an eye on the time, never know when they get trapped in another temporal disturbance, again.
Chuckling at this, Pete mused, "See, much to learn!"
With David freed from his confinements, Catherine handed back his Sonic Screwdriver, which he held as he marveled the sight of it, like he hadn't seen it in years, much to Catherine's annoyance.
Pete couldn't help the smile that graces his lips, as David takes hold of his version of the Sonic Screwdriver, and with his other hand, pats Pete's shoulder, thanking him in earnest for retrieving it for him, oh, and rescuing them.
"I couldn't let you have all the fun, hm?" Pete smirked as he remembered his and David's conversation during the awards show.
About to leave and continue onward on their path stopping the Cybermen and Daleks, they're abruptly stopped by a sudden appearance of someone standing in the doorway, his arms crossed, as his dark eyed stared at the four.
"Uh, you got a nougat of wisdom for this?" David asks Pete as the men stared at Ianto who'd gotten the urge to do an unscheduled checkup on the prisoners.
Staring at him with his sunglasses, Pete sees he isn't being used by the Cybermen, so he said, "You don't trust her, either, do you?"
Shaking his head, Ianto replied, "I do not."
Ah, perfect, sowing distrust in authority!
Blinking, Lila pointed at Ianto as she says, "When did you get suspicious?"
Sighing, Ianto responded that while others weren't observant, he grew suspicious of Director Harriet sometime ago never had any evidence to back up his claims, so he had to begrudgingly continue working as normal.
He suspected that it happened when Director Harriet went to an assembly a few months ago, they could've easily switched her earpiece when she was forced to take it off for security purposes, and used her enough to get far in their plan.
"Would anyone else believe that?" Pete inquired if the people Ianto worked with were willing to believe that their director's been taken by the Cybermen and as he nodded, Ianto affirmed that they always wanted a reason to boot the old bat, as he called the director.
Her being the mouthpiece for the Cybermen's a good way to do it, he thinks.
Gesturing, Catherine pointed out, "If you knew, did you notice anything out of the ordinary?"
Namely, strange shipments, that sort, and Ianto confirmed that he's been watching the director's movements like a hawk.
"Oh, by the way, it wasn't your charm that got you through, sir," Ianto then tells Pete that it wasn't his experiences that got him through security, Ianto just had them wave him through.
Oh, he knew who Pete was from the word 'go.'
Don't worry, he never shared this with the others, they're only concerned with the other men, that's it.
Let's say Ianto's been prepping and using his position to get everything together for this day, hell, he's the reason they were here, at all.
"So, it was you who was looking for me?" David's mouth gape as he concluded as Ianto confirmed that he needed to find the men and get them before the Cybermen, did.
Sorry about that.
But!
Pete did get ahead of Ianto, so there's that.
Ianto couldn't take the Sonic Screwdrivers, he would've been found out sooner if he tried, when told how Pete managed to sneak in, Ianto mused, "Why didn't I think of that?"
Prodding from Catherine, the group went on to move forward with their plan on reuniting with Theodore and Lila's father, instantly Ianto noticed something wrong, that the soldiers weren't where they should've, and he couldn't rez Gwen, Owen, either of the people on his team, the comm-link's gone offline.
Hurrying, Ianto guided them, and they didn't have to go far when they saw two men running towards them, one struggling as the other kept pace with ease.
They stopped when they saw the group and Lila hugged her father without a word as he's shocked to see her out of the cell.
"I got parole, dad," Lila joked with him and he then added, "Oh good, I thought you'd have to wait another ten years, again!"
Releasing him, Lila looked towards Theodore as he tells her that both versions of the TARDIS are now fully operational, before she hugged him, too.
A gentle squeeze as he held her close, Theodore received his handy Sonic Screwdriver from Lila as he released her, before the group started hearing the all-too-familiar thudding noises.
"Come on!" Ianto urged as the group followed him to safety while the thudding noises gotten closer.
