So I decided to start using Caleb's POV because I got bored purely writing from Annie's perspective. If you go back, you'll see I added another chapter that replaced the previous chapter 4.

Update: I realized my mistake and fixed the name thing. I'm sorry for any confusion.

Happy reading everyone!

I remember dinner being really pleasant but according to Caleb and Conner, it was a struggle.

Caleb's POV

I remember Conner. On the occasion he came over to events held at Annie's home, he mostly kept to himself. Annie would try to engage him, and he seemed to respond to her. There was something about the way he acted and seem to hover around Annie that made me uneasy that night and throughout our vacation.

At dinner, we have set places that we have kept since the beginning. Annie sits in between her brother and myself. This way, she can care for her brother and we can interact as normal. But that night, we struggled. As Annie led her brother to their seats I followed her and out of the corner of my eye I notice Conner coming in from the other side heading for my seat. I found this odd. He's always sat across from Annie, I grabbed onto my seat and I looked at him. I was trying to read to him. Why would he go against protocol?

He seemed confused and possibly upset. Annie bumped into him trying to sit down.

"Oh, sorry."

"No, you're fine. I'll just head that way." He gestured to the seat across from Annie. I wasn't sure if he was nervous or just awkward. Either way, this was incredibly odd.

Dinner went on as normal afterwards.

The strangest of his behavior was when we sat around the bonfire making smores. I never saw him interact with Princeton the way he did that night.

"Don't get so close to the fire Princeton!" Annie told her brother.

He shrugged her warning off. When he pulled his marshmallow out, it was burning.

He exclaimed, "Ah. It's burnt."

"Blow on it!" Annie exclaimed as she got up to help her brother who had started to cry a little. I walked up to assist Annie but Conner had beat me there.

"Hey, you want to switch?" Conner asked him as he held out his marshmallow for Princeton to see. I'll admit, he had a nice golden brown on that marshmallow. I was impressed. However, it struck me as odd. He never approached Princeton. Often times, Princeton made it a game to mess with him. Princeton would surprise him by running up to him and tapping him. Had Conner gained confidence since I last saw him? It had been a year so it was possible.

But then I noticed the way he looked at Annie when she thanked him.

His eyes lit up and he smiled oddly. He was content but nervous. Annie was perfectly happy and grateful to him. And then I heard this exchange.

"It's gonna fall, come on." Annie said as they ran towards the table with the rest of the supplies. I followed them.

"Made it." I saw Conner place the marshmallow on a plate while Annie prepared the crackers and the chocolate.

"But it takes forever to get a marshmallow that golden brown."

"Oh, I can eat both. I don't really have a preference. Sometimes I just want one over the other."

"Well here, I can make one for you."

"You don't have to."

"I want to. I know I like mine burnt but I do have more patience than my brother. I can make you one to replace that one."

"Then, let me give you this one. I can make it into a smore and you can eat it while browning my marshmallow."

"You sure, you can wait that long?"

"Yeah, but I need to get to this quick, while it's still warm

His eyes lit up and he smiled oddly. He was content but nervous. Annie was perfectly happy and grateful to him. It was nothing special, she's a happy person. But seeing this, I felt a jolt in my heart. I felt upset with myself and with Conner. I felt a little angry and I didn't understand why.

"Hey Caleb?"

"Huh?" I refocused. Annie and Conner were staring at me.

"You okay?" She asked.

"I'm fine, just lost in thought."

"You sure?"

"Yes. Please excuse me."

I walked towards the table with the smores supplies and tried to act normal. I wasn't sure what I was feeling but I didn't want to ruin this vacation. Annie needs to be distracted right now. Whether I like it or not, Conner was doing an excellent job of it.

That night, Mom decided to have a talk with me.

"So, I noticed you were acting strangely with Annie and Conner today."

"Hmm." I looked at her and she looked at me with soft eyes and a soft smile. She sat down next to me on the bed I was using.

"Is everything all right?"

"I-I'm not sure Mother."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, it doesn't make any sense. I felt upset with Conner today but he didn't do anything directly to me."

"When did you feel upset?"

"He was talking to Annie about smores."

"You mean when he gave his marshmallow to Princeton."

"Yes. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary but seeing her with him made me feel bad."

"Oh Sweetheart, it sounds like you're jealous of Conner."

"What?"

She shrugged. "You were jealous honey. It's a normal feeling."

this didn't make any sense. He doesn't have anything that I want so there's got to be another explanation. But knowing my mother, she would insist that I was jealous. I decided to humor the idea so that we could get through this conversation.

"Okay Mother, then what should I do?"

"Well, whenever I got jealous, I would stop myself and remind myself of my good qualities and triumphs. It works better if you know why your jealous because then you know what to think about."

I nodded.

"It won't last forever Caleb." She rubbed my head and smiled at me. "And anyway, it might have only been for an instant. Sometimes jealousy comes and goes."

"I know Mother."

"Okay. Good night Sweetheart."

"Good night Mother."

She left and turned off the light. I stayed awake wondering about what happened that day. There's nothing that I want that he has. Maybe Mother was right, and it was just for that one instant. If that's the case, then it had something to do with Annie and those smores. I had gotten up to help her, but he beat me to it… actually he would have bested me because I couldn't have traded a marshmallow with Princeton. Is that all it could be? He beat me to the rescue…?

I hoped it was that simple because the solution was simple. I had to be quicker than him and come up with smart solutions… Or I could take my mother's advice and try not to allow it to bother me. I sighed. I need to sleep. I can't be tired while I'm trying to solve this. I decided to deal with the issue in the morning. Hopefully, a good night's rest will help.
