Sitting around the kitchen table, mulled wine in his hand, deep in thoughts as his caramel eyes fell to the wine reflecting his face, as he listened to the ambiance of the Telly, describing another incident involving the Daleks.
When they dealt with them during the Torchwood incident, they thought they were dealing with an invasion, what with Cybermen hiding in the sub-basement of the building, but it wasn't so, and he knew now why that was, that they weren't wrong.
While they destroyed the Daleks, there's something amiss, Daleks wouldn't spend unnecessary resources just to send a scout, when they weren't even close to Earth to properly invade.
Cybermen wouldn't spend their days hiding under Torchwood, they'd be out in the open, but they weren't when the incident occurred.
As he remained in deep thought, it finally hit him.
All along.
The Daleks were here.
Just couldn't see them.
Those Daleks coming here from space, a rival faction, curious to know what became of their rivals, died for it.
While their counterparts hid in the shadows, waiting, watching, and once the Cybermen left out of fear of the ticking sound, now finally identified, it left them with an opening.
"Hey daddy!" Pete heard his daughter coming through the doorway, a look in her eyes as she sees her father sitting at the kitchen table, a look in his eyes.
Looking up at her, Pete's caramel eyes softened as he sees her sitting down across from him, as she asked how long he's been sitting at the kitchen table with the cup in his hand, the wine untouched.
Swallowing his everything, Pete then told his daughter, "Jenny… tomorrow… me and David are going to end it. This man… he won't get away with his crimes, any longer. I don't know what'll happen, but if anything happens to me… know I always loved you and I wished your mother was here to see you grown."
It's unexpected coming from him, but Pete knew there's a possible chance he won't come home after tomorrow, but he promised his daughter he'll get back the necklace the Master stole from her mother.
"Your mother always wanted you to have it when you were older," Pete expressed what Matilda told him when they were in bed together one evening, how she wanted Jenny to have her necklace.
By god, he'll ensure that his daughter gets his late wife's necklace, dead or alive.
Seeing the dejected look in her face, Pete reached out to touch her hand, reminding her that she's got his stubbornness.
"There must be something I can do!" Jenny wanted to do more than hide from Daleks, help people caught in the crossfire, the fact her father won't let her come with them tomorrow, it drove her mad that she wasn't doing enough, but her father calms her.
Shaking his head as his straight blond hair stiffly moved, Pete tells her, "You're doing enough, Jenny. I don't want you near him. I've decided with David, if anything happens to me, and he's still alive, he will take care of you."
When she brought it up, a frown appeared on Pete's face as he then tells her, "Should it be the both of us, I've tasked Dom and Shale to watch over you. They can be difficult, but Dom would never let anything happen to you."
In the event he and David perished in the battle, that the Ko'gan will watch over Jenny, never to let anything or anyone bring harm to her, while it's an unusual request, Dom understood Pete's reasonings.
Tears welling up, Jenny chided her father for speaking that way, but he calmly told her that while he hasn't been the Doctor for decades now, in his heart, he's still the Doctor, and he knew when a situation grew dire.
This wasn't anyone he dealt with in his time.
Not an alien he could outwit, trick, this was someone else.
Regardless of his feelings, he won't stand back idly, desiring revenge against the man who killed his wife, robbed her body, traumatized his daughter.
Even if it meant he had to die to ensure the madman couldn't do it to someone else.
"Daddy, what if he gets away, again?" Jenny's lip pitifully wobbled as tears ran down her face.
Thinking about it, Pete assures her that he and Hamon worked it out, he won't escape the clutches of death, again.
Should the Master succeed in killing them all, he'll still feel the ramifications for his actions, and it'll be a joyous day for everyone he's ever harmed or killed.
It's not something Jenny wanted to hear, hoping that her father and David were guaranteed to come out of this alive, but Pete reminded her that life as the Doctor wasn't always easy, but it's necessary.
They overheard the front door opening and closing, footsteps coming towards the kitchen.
Poking his head in, his brown hair sticking up, David looked at them with his chocolate eyes, but instead of energy radiating in them, morose, instead.
He'd come back from talking it over with Catherine, what he wanted her to do if it's him.
"Come and sit down, son, we don't have much time left," Pete sighed as he gestured towards David, coming towards them, sitting adjacent between the two as he looked towards Jenny as she wiped her reddened eyes with a tissue.
Chewing on his bottom lip, David explains to Jenny, "I've told Catherine. If anything happens, she's going to keep you company, in between running things for me."
When the Ko'gan weren't at Jenny's side, Catherine's taking their spot, vice versa, just so Jenny wouldn't feel alone.
Jabbing him, Jenny refused to believe in the doom and gloom the men portray, that they'll come out of this alive.
"You two are some of the most stubborn men I've known, you won't let this madman pull one over you two!" Jenny sniffled as she berated the men for thinking the way they do, pointing out that they've never let anything stopped them before, it wouldn't be the time for it to start, now.
Seeing her desperation for a hopeful turnout, David reached out to touch her face, wiping away her warm tears with his finger, as he tells her that no matter what, he loved her, always.
Looking up at the clock hanging above the kitchen sink, Pete's caramel eyes looked at the hands as they slowly moved, inching closer to when he's to leave with David, a slow start to one of the most difficult battles they've ever faced in their lives.
"Neither snow or rain, will keep the Doctor away," Pete exhaled sharply as he rubbed his caramel eyes, trying to hide his tears from the two.
Truly, he doesn't know what's to come, tomorrow, but he hoped in his heart, that the peace can come, for his beloved and David's father.
THE END
